Between this, Patisserie Madeleine and the newly opened Coco... I might as well go buy bigger trousers in anticipation: Stockbridge has officially become the sugar capital of Edinburgh!
This is the second Liggy's Cakes in the city and opened just five weeks ago. I hadn't been to their first location, so I visited without any real expectations and was pleasantly surprised. The shop is simple but beautifully done, clean, bright and welcoming. The cakes are SPECTACULAR! I honestly haven't seen many that rival these cakes in look. But let me tell you, you WILL pay for that look - some of the cakes on display coast around the £148 range and their big, splashy wedding fare looks to be quite the dent on the wallet. If you're seeking for something for a birthday but still bespoke, you're looking at the £60-£80 range. They do have some cute wee ones that can feed up to 15 for £30ish - still pricey, but worth it for the oophm factor (if the taste matches the look that is!). I don't think this would make my regular cake rotation but for special events/occasions, I might be tempted to get something done.
What I came seeking were the cupcakes. The pretty little things cost about £1.90 a piece (a bit more for the rose ones I believe) and there's a little discount if you buy 6 or more. They're pretty things and make for a nice present/surprise. Though I can't speak to the cake, I CAN tell you that the cupcakes are quite tasty. My socks weren't knocked off but that's ok by me - especially as someone who hosts so many events, the fact that I can get cupcakes done to match my event, add a little "wow", that also taste pretty darn good is enough.
I'm interested to see how this place develops as it gets settled, but for now, i'm pretty happy to see it in the 'hood. read more
