As with most new challenges I end up tackling in life, chances are people close to me spent years making the suggestion to do so, pleading with me to do so, or begging me to do so. It never works, until that magical day when on a whim I make up my mind to do it myself. Losing my pesky tummy weight was this most recent challenge.
I've watched/been disgusted by enough exercise shows like "The Biggest Loser" to know that weight loss, whether for aesthetic purposes or to prevent yourself from keeling over and dying, is not a quick fix, but a lifestyle change. Not being a big fan of personal change, I willfully ignored the chance to change, until one day I decided that I was tired of watching my waist size go up and watching my numbers of casual play partners go down; this was just not acceptable. I wasn't fat, but I did have a "middle" and a bit of a spare tire. So I looked up 5 natural appetite suppressants (ice water, almonds, apples, pickles, and lettuce) to curb my ravenous unending appetite. So far so good.
Well what's the point of suppressing my appetite if I was just going to eat the same old junk that got me to this point? Utilizing a priceless oracle of nutrition facts, healthy living tips, and personal exercise routines (my mother), I decided to give up sweets, white carbs, diet soda, cheese, 2% milk, beer, dressings, and any condiment that wasn't mustard...virtually overnight. In their place I substituted lean proteins, massive amounts of fruits and vegetables, whole wheats, iced tea, 1% milk, vodka tonics, healthy snacks, and a strict 1,750-1,900 calorie diet. I lost 15 pounds automatically.
Enter Lifetime Fitness. My old membership had either expired or was terminated when I went a total of four times in as many months years ago. My brother had a 7-day pass he gave me, so I thought I'd give it a shot and integrate exercise with my new eating habits. So I went--5 days out of 7, and power walked for two hours every morning. I've never had so much energy or felt so refreshed. As for gym atmosphere and staff friendliness, both get an A+. I was hooked.
The sign up process was fairly easy. "T" was my go-to guy who had issued the pass, and so I made sure to give him credit. And even though when he looks at me, I can tell he never remembers who I am no matter how many times he's talked to me, he's ultimately harmless. The fee is $70-something a month and you get $100 in Lifetime bucks to spend on a class or two (I got 2 personal training sessions). I also linked the credit card to a tab so I could grab lunch or a bottle of water at the cafe if so needed.
My first session was with a buff, cute white guy named Steve. He asked me what my goals were with working out. My goals? What do you think? Lose weight so I can fit into my designer clothes and sleep with the cute guys I like. What the hell kind of question is that anyway? I digress. He said with my impressive, disciplined diet and treadmill routine, I would reach my goal weight in 6 or 7 weeks. I did it in two. I heart my metabolism.
The trainers also give you a lot of good info on working out "smarter rather than harder" and I love the "Experience Life" magazine that comes with the membership. It's probably the only publication on Earth that could convince me to eat kale.
I don't make things too complicated. I work out 4-6 times a week, hook up my iPod, start the treadmill, and zone out to Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and whatever's on the TV and just go...usually for two hours. No one bothers me (although the people picking out their wedgies on the stair step machine sometimes "bothers" me), and Lifetime is the one and only place I can be sweaty and gross without feeling a shred of self-consciousness.
Joining Lifetime Fitness truly was an integral part of changing my life for the better. I know there are other gyms, but I only like the best--so this place works out perfectly.
I had a goal: fit into a Yves Saint Laurent shirt that was tight when I bought it, and a pair of slim, small waisted Theory pants. If I could fit into these, I could fit into my entire wardrobe. As of this review, I've lost 30+ pounds, I fit into both pieces, and I look fierce when I do. And even though I dislike that society (and a lot of men) are vain, superficial, and shallow enough to only see the outside of people, it doesn't concern me anymore.
Because I'm totally cute again. read more
