Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon. When we first arrived there was a short line but it quickly grew out the door and stayed consistently busy. The decor was cute & ice cream themed. They have over a dozen flavors of ice cream. Some are listed on the display while others are on signs on the wall above the ice cream. I got the "Halley's Comet" single scoop in a waffle cone. It was vanilla & chocolate ice cream w/ caramel ribbons & Carmel truffles. It was good & reasonably priced. They have 3 tables inside so it's smaller, there's some benches outside too. Interesting cute/antique decor, but the staff were unfriendly/borderline rude and the quality was lacking. Both of us ordered a double scoop (which was served in a plastic cup). One of the orders was super packed in the cup and nearly overfilling, while the other order looked like two lazy half scoops stacked with lots of gaping. So one of the "double scoops" was served like 3 scoops and the other "double scoop" was served like a small 1 scoop. There was no where to sit. Indoor seating was limited and closed due to COVID safety, and there wasn't anything set up outside. The ice cream itself was okay... not great, but not awful. I think I've been to licks Unlimited for at least 10 consecutive years. I first went when I was maybe 9 or 10 and would tell my parents they have the best ice cream. Now that I'm in my 20s I can confidently say that it wasn't the sugar talking when I would say they have the best ice cream. I do know that the original owner of Licks Unlimited passed away a couple years back and I felt very sad for his family and friends. And I will not lie at the time of hearing this information I feared that the spot might be changed or the little ice cream parlor that a grew to love would disappear. I went in on 7/31/20. The rate is carried by the weight of the ice cream itself. I had the things just got serious. It was delicious. But man the young lady who served me... well I wish she did not. Super cute little ice cream shoppe in downtown Excelsior. It is a summer tradition to bring the nephews here for a tasty treat. Located just blocks away from Maynard's (please see my review) and across the street from the movie theatre, Licks is great place for all ages. They have a couple dozen flavors to choose from that all have unique names to them. You can order any flavor in a variety of cones, in a dish or as a sundae or malt. The last time I was there I chose a peanut butter cup malt and I think it was one of the best ideas I have made in a long time. It is very tiny inside so please do not be alarmed when you see that the line is out down. The staff works quick and with smiles on their faces. They have a few tables inside and out. I'm giving this rating based upon the service. I unfortunately did not get to try the iced cream. I've had it before, but it was like 5 years ago and I don't remember it, but if I wanted to go back, it must have been good. I waited in line, which was out of the door and on to the sidewalk for ice cream and once it was my turn, I ordered Salted Caramel. I wasn't aware of how the menu worked and didn't realize that what i saw was part of a creation they have of another ice cream selection that HAD the salted caramel in it. So I placed my order and got a sugar cone and when I received it, it had chocolate in it. I hate chocolate. Once it was confirmed that this was chocolate (I had already paid) I handed it back to the guy and told him I wasn't aware it had chocolate and didn't want it and asked if he could thrwo it away. He obliged and I was getting ready to leave with no issue of payment. It was my fault I didn't ask more questions and I was okay with paying and leaving. This summer my quest has been to find and compare all the best spots for frozen treats. The Twin Cities area has been blessed by numerous new frozen yogurt spots and delicious local ice cream shops. Given the fact that we have such short (and hot) summers, people flock to places like this to get a fresh scoop of a unique flavor with local ingredients and that freshly made taste. Licks Unlimited is another shop in the same category as Sebastian Joe's and Grand Ole Creamery. If you are a fan of either, youll probably enjoy it. Licks Unlimited is a bit out of the way if you live in the Metro, but definitely worth a stop if you are having a relaxing Sunday or weeknight outing. It is located in the beautiful little town of Excelsior not far from highway 7 and Minnetonka Country Club. Excelsior's main drag is Water Street, which leads right up to the port where you can walk along Lake Minnetonka or take a boat ride. It's really quite a gorgeous place to spend an afternoon on a nice day--especially with a cone in hand. Parking isnt bad either. Although it gets busy along the Water Street, there are several spots on side roads and even metered parking at the park. The shop is really small and the line tends to go out the door, but it moves pretty quick. The flavors are similar to what you might find at other local ice cream shops, and tastes like it is equally high quality. There is actually a little trolley-looking shop by the lake that sells Sebastian Joe's ice cream if you want to compare. I, personally, like the Zoreo which is a chocolate ice cream with marshmallow and Oreo pieces. For something more refreshing and light, they have a peach yogurt with raspberry and peach pieces in it. Overall, plenty of options (see photo for menu). Overall, the local ice creams here in Minnesota are amazing. It's hard to rank them because they are all good... But here is how I think they stack up--with Izzy's beingmy un-disputed champ: 1. Izzy's 2. Grand Ole Creamery 3. Licks Unlimited 4. Licks is a natural compliment to the charming local scene in downtown Excelsior. I visited with my brother-in-law and family while on vacation. It's a classic, throw-back ice cream shoppe with 30 or so flavors. I believe these are all hand made. The flavors rang from your tried and true favorites, like cookie dough and mountain mint chip, to the more exotic and creative, like Blue Moon (which tastes like Froot Loops). They also make sundaes and fun things like root beer floats. The staff seems to be stocked with local high school or college kids trying to earn some bucks on Summer break.
