    Tacos!

The food has steadily improved, their queso is one of the best around, thick enough to stick to your chip and the service is always friendly. Still annoying they don't take reservations, is it really that hard? Feels like a local Excelsior hometown joint with staying power which is good considering all the turnover on Water St.

I feel like I'm on a Lago's tour. So what I learned is that each location is a bit different. The uptown one which is now closed and a newer location was put in St. Louis park - had $5 shots - but they were different mixed shots like Washington apple, Scooby snack, etc. No other locations offer them. Same with menu - they vary at each location. I really enjoy the taquitos and was super sad to not see them on the main menu but there was a specials menu and they were on that one so I was able to get them. We also got a few drinks. I got the blackberry pineapple punch and my friends got Paloma's as well as chilled shots. The drinks were amazing! We sat at the bar and the bartender was on point with everything! They had a sidewalk patio which seemed to be popular since it was nice out. I would for sure come back to this location if/when I'm in the area again.

My mom and I visited Lagos Tacos in Excelsior and had a fantastic time. Although there's outdoor seating, we decided to eat inside for the cozy indoor ambiance. Despite being a busy Friday afternoon, the service was fabulous. Our waitress was incredibly patient as we took our time looking at the menu. Once we placed our orders, the food arrived very fast and was so fresh. I ordered in the kids' quesadilla, while my mom ordered the carnitas street tacos off the happy hour menu. Both dishes were very flavorful. The kids' quesadilla also came with a fantastic cornbread cake that complemented the quesadillas brilliantly. I highly recommend Lagos Tacos and I'll definitely be back for some great food and great service.

Lago Tacos in Excelsior is a nice little Mexican restaurant a block from the lake. The food and drink menus are good sized with lots of options. The atmosphere is casual and service very friendly. Be careful or one of them will talk you into a large piece of Tres Leches cake to take home with you! Definitely worth a stop, give it a try.

My friend and I stopped in for drinks and a bite to eat while we were in downtown excelsior. There was a wait for tables but we were able to sit right away right up at the wrap around bar which we really enjoyed! The service was quick. The drinks were delicious! And the food was mouth-watering good! I got the Birria Tacos and would totally come back to get those again. Warm, savory, delectable goodness! We had a great time here!

Amazing food!! The food here is so good. I highly suggest you get the buffalo chicken tacos. The servers were attentive and stopped by to ensure we had what we needed. Nice outdoor patio seating in front of the restaurant as well.

The food was delicious! Everything came out warm and full. Usually it would take more to fill my stomach but this was full of toppings and was full. The firecrackers shrimp was sweet and savory. It was my favorite taco. I order some to go because it was delicious. The service, they were pretty busy, but the food came out quick. They got us water and drinks quickly. They were very accommodating to give us sauce, and clean up well. The ambiance was nice, people enjoying the space inside and it was kind of crowded, but enough space to walk around. The staff are welcoming to customer! Would different try again!

We had tried almost every other place in Excelsior, so naturally it came time to try out Lago Tacos. Eh...probably wouldn't go back. The space itself is really small, and when we went it was bustling, so it just feels cramped. The service was actually pretty on top of things considering how busy they were, so that's a plus. Margarita was not good, and at $14, would not recommend. The chips and queso were really good, so points back for that one! I ordered the Walleye Tacos, which were a fun spin on the fish taco. Tasted good and decent serving size! The side of rice was pretty blah, but the corncake is YUM...so go with that one! Unfortunately, my boyfriend got the firecracker shrimp bowl, and that was a MAJOR disappointment. A little shrimp, a large serving of chopped iceberg lettuce, and their bland rice. Just make it a burrito and save yourself the boredom. In my opinion, too much of an up and down experience with the food to feel comfortable coming back...especially at the Excelsior price point. Find somewhere more authentic unless you're in a quick pinch.

Hands down some of the best tacos in the twin cities. We've been wanting to check out Lagos for a long time now and finally did it! Service was exceptional - quick and polite, quick ticket times too! Everyone around us had food on their plates that looked amazing even though we were full when we finished it made us hungry again just looking at it. Coconut shrimp tacos and Birria tacos were our choices and both had so much flavor and good portions too. All fresh and all melt in your mouth. I got a Mocktail and it was fresh watermelon with mint and lime juice. My husband got a coconut margarita and said it was a 4 out of 5! We will definitely be back as we love downtown excelsior and this place is now a new favorite of ours. Prices are on the higher end but if you're getting good service and food like that some times it's worth it.

FOOD: Can I make this review a "sesame chicken taco fanclub" post?? Because they were the BEST tacos I have had!! I'm a major sesame chicken fan, so when I saw they had them in taco form... it was a no brainer. 1000% recommend!! The ingredients were also very fresh!! SERVICE: The staff was very nice and our tacos came out very quick! AMBIANCE: Not exactly a 'date night' vibe, but I liked that there was both a bar and seating area. Kind of a casual vibe! LOCATION/PARKING: The location is amazing, as it is adorable in downtown Excelsior!! Parking was super easy to find!

My favorite spot on water street in Excelsior debatably one of my favorite Mexican spots in the South West Metro. It's a tiny spot. Really squeezed in but still comfortable. There's 3 seating options high top tables, booths and low top tables, and bar seating. Snag bar seats when it's busy you can get your drinks fast and the full menu. I love the energy here. Great spot to catch a game without it being a sports-obsessed bar. The waitstaff was helpful and efficient. The bartenders are always kind and make sure you get exactly what you need. We started with chips and salsa they were great slightly spicy but I also am sensitive to spice so low spice for normal people. I ordered the Chicken Tinga with the queso on the side. I have to split the burrito!! I have eaten it all in one sitting because it is delicious but I am not comfortable after. I typically cut it in half and don't touch one side and put it in a to go box. The leftovers if that's your thing are sooooooo good reheated. I feel like I don't miss out because I am getting two large meals.

It was not great. The problem? I think it was because owner/chef Rene Ruiz Olivar was acting as waiter, not chef. We gave Sr. Ruiz the freedom to choose our tapas, with one exception, the black ink pasta with scallops and shrimp (Tinta Negra) that reviewers have raved about. He said, no problema--he would serve it. Then he must have forgotten because we never got it. The first tapa served, almond-crusted manchego (Almendrado), was plated prettily and was delicious but oh-so-sweet. It was an odd choice for a starter, would have been better as the finale in case nobody ordered dessert. Soon came a lamb tapa (Cordero). The lamb chops' quality was uncertain as the meat was severely overcooked. El Bodegon's langoustines (Gambas al Ajillo) had given every bit of their sea flavor to the sauce, which was magnificent, we all agreed. But where were the dish's promised mussels, the rice? One shared plate, a beef tenderloin tapa (Carne Brava), had apparently lingered too long in the kitchen--the meat was nearly cold. I adore papas bravas (Patatas Bravas). I must have had the dish a dozen times or more during my last trip to Spain, in 2017, when I visited friends who live in Ronda. During my six-week stay, we toured Andalucia, staying at hotels in large cities and visiting small towns. I also spent time sola in Madrid and Barcelona. Unlike in Spain, El Bodegon's potatoes were diced to death. Never in Spain have I ever had patatas bravas that were not substantial in size. All in all, I found the vegetables accompanying the tapas unrecognizable except for the tiny Brussels sprouts. The rest seemed chopped up or stirred to pieces in the pan. Some of my friends had churros for their dessert. They deemed them appropriately hot and tasty. My dessert was cheesecake torte, decked out with a candle as it was my 90th birthday. The torte was a gold-star winner. It was absolutely delicious, its plating the most successful of the evening. It was so perfect it almost made up for the sub-par tapas that preceded it. One of us had a view of the kitchen from his seat at the table. He saw a man other than the chef/owner doing the cooking. Was he a trainee? Did Sr. Ruiz help with the plating? God knows he didn't have a lot patrons to contend with in his role as waiter. It was a slow weeknight, and there were never more than four tables occupied. I sincerely regret that our time at El Bodegon differs from so many reviewers. Like them, I want to see Sr. Ruiz's little restaurant succeed. He has a hard row to hoe, and I hope a disappointing dinner like ours does not befall anyone else going forward.

Love the murals on the walls celebrating the Minnesotan culture and icons. The service is always great, and the servers always have a good menu recommendation if you're unsure what to get. The bar has delicious drinks and their Jamaica juice is so refreshing on a hot summer day. Happy hour is a nice discount on some favorite items. I will say anything with shredded chicken isn't my favorite (not enough seasoning on the chicken for my taste) but everything else we've tried is a hit! We always start off with the chips and salsa flight and add cheese sauce - it's NOT a queso, there's no peppers or spice. The creamy green sauce is our favorite salsa they make, it's delicious on everything. The torta is a great choice if you're unsure what to get, the pineapple bowl is awesome if you're trying to share with others. Tacos and burritos are always a hit - I love the crunch of the pork belly and the flavor of the al pastor, taco toppings are onion and cilantro unless you get the loaded taco with slaw. The burrito could probably feed two people with an appetizer. It's a little higher priced than your typical plate of tacos but the quality of the food is always top notch, the kitchen is open and clean, and I've never left hungry or without leftovers. I will note - if you're looking for "traditional" Mexican food this probably isn't the spot you're looking for. It's still delicious just slightly different than what you'd get at your typical taqueria.
