Yummy food for Taco Tuesday (that's not tacos!). Today the Chop Salad - romaine, roasted corn black bean salsa, queso fresco, tortilla strips with an avocado vinaigrette - was calling my name and turned out to be delicious. The accompanying spicy mayo was not for me., but the avo vinaigrette was crazy good. Everything was fresh and the layers of flavor were remarkable for a humble salad. The chips and queso, holy cow! The queso was thick and yummy and the GIANT BAG of chips would feed a lot of people. The chips are thin and crisp and perfect with the queso. I'll definitely return to try more! read more

Since my last review, I've been back to Lago Taco a couple of times, and I'm happy to say things have improved. The food quality has been noticeably better, and they've added more value with 10-20% off coupons. Given these changes--and how friendly the staff has been--I felt it was only fair to update my review and add a star. I feel like I'm on a Lago's tour. So what I learned is that each location is a bit different. The uptown one which is now closed and a newer location was put in St. Louis park - had $5 shots - but they were different mixed shots like Washington apple, Scooby snack, etc. No other locations offer them. Same with menu - they vary at each location. I really enjoy the taquitos and was super sad to not see them on the main menu but there was a specials menu and they were on that one so I was able to get them. We also got a few drinks. I got the blackberry pineapple punch and my friends got Paloma's as well as chilled shots. The drinks were amazing! We sat at the bar and the bartender was on point with everything! They had a sidewalk patio which seemed to be popular since it was nice out. I would for sure come back to this location if/when I'm in the area again. read more

My mom and I visited Lagos Tacos in Excelsior and had a fantastic time. Although there's outdoor seating, we decided to eat inside for the cozy indoor ambiance. Despite being a busy Friday afternoon, the service was fabulous. Our waitress was incredibly patient as we took our time looking at the menu. Once we placed our orders, the food arrived very fast and was so fresh. I ordered in the kids' quesadilla, while my mom ordered the carnitas street tacos off the happy hour menu. Both dishes were very flavorful. The kids' quesadilla also came with a fantastic cornbread cake that complemented the quesadillas brilliantly. Lago Tacos in Excelsior is a nice little Mexican restaurant a block from the lake. The food and drink menus are good sized with lots of options. The atmosphere is casual and service very friendly. Our meal was so good I took a picture of our appetizer and started eating my main dish so quickly it was gone before I remembered I wanted a photo! Staff here are always so friendly, great service. The Mexican bootlegger cocktail is excellent. I'm a sucker for a bootleg cocktail and this was a fun spin. The chicken tinga quesadilla was so flavorful and unique. The food was delicious! Everything came out warm and full. Usually it would take more to fill my stomach but this was full of toppings and was full. The firecrackers shrimp was sweet and savory. It was my favorite taco. I order some to go because it was delicious. The service, they were pretty busy, but the food came out quick. They got us water and drinks quickly. We had tried almost every other place in Excelsior, so naturally it came time to try out Lago Tacos. Eh...probably wouldn't go back. The space itself is really small, and when we went it was bustling, so it just feels cramped. The service was actually pretty on top of things considering how busy they were, so that's a plus. Margarita was not good, and at $14, would not recommend. The chips and queso were really good, so points back for that one! I ordered the Walleye Tacos, which were a fun spin on the fish taco. Tasted good and decent serving size! The side of rice was pretty blah, but the corncake is YUM...so go with that one! Unfortunately, my boyfriend got the firecracker shrimp bowl, and that was a MAJOR disappointment. A little shrimp, a large serving of chopped iceberg lettuce, and their bland rice. Just make it a burrito and save yourself the boredom. In my opinion, too much of an up and down experience with the food to feel comfortable coming back...especially at the Excelsior price point. Find somewhere more authentic unless you're in a quick pinch. read more

Hands down some of the best tacos in the twin cities. We've been wanting to check out Lagos for a long time now and finally did it! Service was exceptional - quick and polite, quick ticket times too! Everyone around us had food on their plates that looked amazing even though we were full when we finished it made us hungry again just looking at it. Coconut shrimp tacos and Birria tacos were our choices and both had so much flavor and good portions too. All fresh and all melt in your mouth. I got a Mocktail and it was fresh watermelon with mint and lime juice. My husband got a coconut margarita and said it was a 4 out of 5! We will definitely be back as we love downtown excelsior and this place is now a new favorite of ours. Prices are on the higher end but if you're getting good service and food like that some times it's worth it. read more

My favorite spot on water street in Excelsior debatably one of my favorite Mexican spots in the South West Metro. It's a tiny spot. Really squeezed in but still comfortable. There's 3 seating options high top tables, booths and low top tables, and bar seating. Snag bar seats when it's busy you can get your drinks fast and the full menu. I love the energy here. Great spot to catch a game without it being a sports-obsessed bar. The waitstaff was helpful and efficient. The bartenders are always kind and make sure you get exactly what you need. We started with chips and salsa they were great slightly spicy but I also am sensitive to spice so low spice for normal people. I ordered the Chicken Tinga with the queso on the side. I have to split the burrito!! I have eaten it all in one sitting because it is delicious but I am not comfortable after. I typically cut it in half and don't touch one side and put it in a to go box. The leftovers if that's your thing are sooooooo good reheated. I feel like I don't miss out because I am getting two large meals. read more

A great spot to get lunch or dinner with plenty of shops near by! We enjoyed the bang bang shrimp tacos, chicken quesadilla, the special of the day which was shredded beef, and the chips & dips! I highly recommend the bang bang shrimp tacos if you are a fan of spicy food and the chips &dip were really enjoyable. If you are interested in watching professional sports games there is a bar area inside with plenty of tvs. It's a family feel type of restaurant and there is a large menu to select options from. The only thing that we experienced that kept me from giving our experience five stars is that once we received our food the waiter didn't check back on us for a long time and we had needed water refills. All were pretty straight forward and good way to start our meal. The tacos were sustainable- pretty large. I really enjoyed my fish taco, I think I would order all three fish next time! Our group of five was lucky to snag a table on the Sunday of the July 4th weekend since everything in town was packed as was this place. Miraculously we were seated immediately for dinner. Our waitress did an awesome job considering how crazy (and loud) this restaurant was on this night. She was efficient and served us with a smile and good humor. Everyone enjoyed their meals. We started with some fried avocado which was very good. I got the three taco plate: one Firecracker Shrimp (the best by far), one Szechuan Shrimp( just Ok), and the Guava BBQ Pork (pretty good). We have been a fan of Lago's since the day they opened but they have greatly raised prices. I just paid $8.50 for a Coors Light at the bar in a plastic cup. That should be $6. Max. All drinks are way over priced. On our recent visit I had a watered down over priced bad margarita. The Queso was runny and below usual,quality as well as the meal. Was looking forward to finally having the opportunity to dine at Lago when an old friend suggested we try some tacos over a networking meeting. The price was right for their trio of tacos so I ordered one tinga and two carnitas. A small corn cake came with the dish and I also added refried pinto beans. The beans and corn cake were fabulous however the chicken and pork tacos were dry and void of any flavor. In addition the tortillas fell apart after eating my first taco. There are many places to enjoy a nice authentic taco but this is not one of them. The tinga was indistinguishable from the carnita, tasteless and very disappointing. I'll add the wait staff was pleasant and attentive. LT needs to get their food right or they'll be closed like the other establishments in Excelsior. I won't be back. read more

Tucked away with almost no parking in downtown Excelsior, you'll find a lengthy list of taco options and one of the best kid-friendly restaurants around. This is because they give each child an Etch-a-Sketch! The taco list is very extensive, which can make ordering a challenge. However, they seem to do most well including the surprising gyro taco! It tastes like a good gyro. The short rib and al pastor are two of my favorites. Both corn and flour tortillas are available depending on preference, as well. Not too expensive, lots of options, and a great place for the kiddos. Just expect a challenge finding a parking spot. read more

I am going to do by best to not taco bout this place for too long... :) We had the Spicy Chicken Onion & Poblano Taco Bowl, Taquitos, and a signature Sweet Corn Cake Lago is a hidden gem with a menu more expansive than Lake Minnetonka. Not expensive, mind you, as the prices are very reasonable. Everything was fresh and memorable, and I don't know how they got such a good cook on the vegetables.
