My dad & I stopped here while on our bike ride on the dirt trail that runs through most of the west metro cities. We were both starving and nothing sounded better than a marg after biking 30+ miles. We ordered the mango margaritas, and they were alright. I didn't love whatever tequila they used, and usually I have 0 preference about tequila hahaha. It also didn't have a ton of flavor, which was disappointing considering the price. We also ordered chips and salsa as an app, and those were really good! The chips were hot and the salsa had a good kick to it (and tasted fresh). I ordered the veggie tacos, and my dad got the pulled pork ones. We both agreed that the tacos tasted pretty dry, and could use more sauce or something. We both like our tacos to be dripping with flavor, and these were not. I liked his pork tacos more than my veggie ones. Considering the price, I was expecting a bit more. Not a terrible taco place, but I've had better. If I came back, I'd probably just get apps and try again on the margs...maybe get one on the rocks instead of frozen. read more

First time at Lagos Tacos in Excelsior. Got some coconut shrimp tacos and some happy hour margs and chips with three dips (queso, salsa, guac). The $5 happy hour Margs were just the right strength for me (I am a very lightweight person, though), and the tacos were a very good fusion item. Not as coconutty as I expected though: the shrimp had a sweet chile sauce on it and it seemed to overpower the coconut, but it was delicious nevertheless. I liked adding the habanero sauce on them. The queso was probably the star of the meal, but guac was also delicious. There is free street parking available and a free 3 hour parking lot down the street. Being that it was winter, it was easy to find spots, but I can imagine it being hard to find some once summer hits being that Lake Minnetonka is down the street. read more

Limited parking. Greeted immediately. We chose to dine on the sidewalk patio. The first Mexican restaurant that, I have dined at that does not offer complimentary chips. We ordered chips with salsa, guacamole and cheese queso. We did share Veggie Quesadilla and veggie tacos. The quesadilla was delicious with plenty of flavor. The tacos were dry and did not have much flavor. Server did a great job. A 5 star If Lago Tacos offered comp chips as all Mexican restaurants do and revisited the lack of flavor in the veggie tacos. read more

Today I was just having a tough work at home day of endless zoom calls and decided I deserved a treat for lunch. Using doordash, I ordered the always phenomenal walleye tacos from Tacos Lagos rather than my typical make at home pbnj. It was a great break. Took a 30 minute break. Server was excellent. Food ok. My friend ordered draft beer and was shocked as to the cost of a glass. She spoke to a manager who looked like she just woke up and did not even bother to brush her hair. Her name was Bri. She explained as to why the cost was $8.50, and shrugged off and walked away. Did not give my friend a chance to talk, and mind you she was very nice and was paying for her beers. But just wanted an explanation. The server was embarrassed, but kind and gave us great service. I have eaten here before and have always had great food and good service . This manager Bri ruined it for me. I went there with three of my female friends. The food was a good value but we were all turned off by the amount of TVs through the whole restaurant. That is one of her pet peeves. I don't know why it's necessary nobody was eating by themselves, what's wrong with the conversation? Not sure that any of us would go back to chew the TVs ruining the atmosphere. read more

As far as Mexican restaurants go this one is pretty damn good. Their portion sizes are on point. The atmosphere is amazing.

I took my friend from Texas to Lago Tacos in Excelsior and we were equally impressed with the menu and service. Their Margarita and Cerveza menu is impressive and we enjoyed their Grapefruit Margarita and jalapeno cucumber margaritas. Not too sweet and the perfect amount of alcohol. I ordered the Ahi Tuna Salad with a Honey Lime Vinagrette and I was impressed with the freshness of the salad as well as the quality and quanitity. My friend ordered the carne asado tacos without salsa and they came as requested. When she asked the server for a ranch he happily brought the regular and jalapeño ranch (delicious). Staff were friendly and our server Nick was a great server, not overbearing but consistently checking on us. Food came timely. Great experience, great food, I will be back! read more

Lago Tacos - Ahi Tuna salad and Grapefruit Margarita - Mexican Near Me - Excelsior, Minnesota

I have been a regular at Lago since it opened, and my wife goes far more often. However, as a kid who grew up in Los Angeles eating authentic Hispanic food, this place just is not it. It is more Americanized or scrubbed Central-South American fare, just a wee off. I would never go here if I craved Mexican. My Minnesotan-born and raised kids with their bland palates, and my Hawaiian wife, however, do not know any better and love this place. One red flag is the lack of multiple hot sauces on the tables. Yeah, you can ask for spicy and hot sauce, and this time I asked for their hottest... it was just meh. It came in a bowl on my plate. Some burn, a worthy Minnesota try, but again, just not that authentic. Taste was great ... for 99.999% of guests, it would be a home run. Their sweet bread and refried beans are the BEST on the planet. This last time, I was torn between a side of sweet bread, which comes as a kit, assembly required, or refried beans. I got the refried beans this time, but honestly looked at my wife's sweet bread with jealousy. You must also get the nacho with beans, guacamole, queso and salsa ... that has the refried beans that are superb. No other place makes them like this. Go here just for that. Do not fret about the smallish size of chips, because they promptly refill. Also, the chips are light and healthy. My three ahi corn tacos were awesome as usual. Big chunks of avocado and raw ahi. Yeah, you can get flour instead. $14. Very good. My daughter got a burrito which was HUGE. Reckless. This is why America is obese. That is unnecessary. They need to post calories if they are serving these huge portions. The most impressive thing is their local beer menu, including two from my favorite brewery, Unmapped. They have the No Trace IPA, but also an Octoberfest I had not had before. They also have 25oz large beer mugs for a reasonable $7.50. 5 stars for that. The place is always packed and expect a wait. The bar is always surrounded, TVs showing sports. It is cozy. We see people we know every time. It is definitely a local fav. Service is great. Parking in Excelsior is not great in general. There are few spaces behind Lago, and do not park in the theater spaces. The big public lots are your best bet ... or in the summer, they will bring food down to the dock. I have seen their food delivered to other boaters every time I have tied up, in fact. Overall, it is five stars. It is just that the name and food are somewhat misleading if you expect authentic food. I do love their ahi tacos. read more

My buddies and I were in Excelsior for a brewpub trip to Excelsior Brewing, so we hit Lago Tacos for some brunch. The staff was super cool and I ordered an Enki IPA, a new brewery near Lake Minnetonka. Good stuff. I ordered the tinga chicken burrito breakfast, but in bowl form. Tons of eggs and fresh and flavorful pulled chicken with tons of grilled peppers on the side. Amazing! Everything was super juicy and flavorful. The eggs were full and fluffy. Great breakfast plate. They also had some great breakfast potatoes with slick salsa that accompanied it. My friends got bloody Mary's, which they said had great tomato flavor. They also came with a flash fried pickle. Beautiful! I have had fried pickles, and this was by far the best ever. Super great waitresses too. Good times! read more

We've been here before for lunch but this is the first time trying their weekend brunch. I had the Breakfast Burrito with chorizo and potato. It had scrambled eggs, grilled onions and peppers, and came with a side of smoked Gouda Hash-browns and a slice of watermelon. My table-mates chose Biscuits and Chorizo Gravy, and Eggs Benedict and everyone gave their meal a thumbs up. read more

Out of the two Lagos Tacos locations (this one and the one in Uptown), this location is BY FAR the better of the two. Seriously, hands-down the better one. Come during happy hour and get a yummy house margarita. They don't skimp you on the tequila! In the mood for nachos (come on when is someone NOT in the mood for nachos ...) get the XL nachos with a friend and enjoy the best nachos ever. Also, queso. Have been here a number of times and not had a wow experience yet. First things first...it is NOT a Mexican restaurant unless you get complimentary chips and salsa. We had the short rib tacos on this trip. The meat in the taco was super tasty. This dish could have been great if the coleslaw would have been dressed. It was like they took it right out of the bag, dry and no flavor...an afterthought that could have made the taco special. Really want to like Lagos Tacos, but it keeps falling a bit short. read more

Providing feedback after receiving poor service and witnessing other potential patrons leaving upset about similar service should not allow an establishment to 1) add tip money to a charge or 2) get the customer berated by the manager when calling to discuss the service. They had a time limit, which we understood beforehand, but they made us leave 8 minutes early when our tab was still on the table--no one was scheduled for a reservation until our allotted time was up and there were 2 tables empty next to us. Eh. What can I say. The food is ok. Started with chips and guacamole. Guac was good, chips were not so good. Ordered tacos al pastor and ahi tuna tacos. Let's just say too much corn tortilla (you get 2 per taco). They tried the street taco style, but used the wrong corn tortilla to double up on. Al pastor was ok at best. Just missed the mark on a pastor style. Ahí tuna was good. Just too much tortilla. Kids chicken tenders tasted a bit fishy (could be solved with better frying oil, maybe). Now the drinks. Mojitarta was really good (says my wife). The tradicional margarita was good, just too sweet for my taste. The lago burro was good. Think Moscow mule with tequila instead of vodka. Service was good. Waitress and staff were friendly and helpful. All in all, wasn't bad for the location (Excelsior area is cool). I wouldn't say no to going again. read more

I have only been to Lago Tacos once so far but I loved it! Something that I really liked about it was the variety of tacos and the different world fusions some of the tacos had. I had the guacamole (YUM), the chicken fried tacos, the Szechuan beef, and the guava bbq pork tacos. Another thing I like is that you can mix and match your tacos--you don't have to get three of the same kind. This is important to me because I like to try all the different flavors. As far as service goes, our server was nice and friendly and I couldn't complain. Once I'm off my diet, I'll be going back! read more

When I saw a Mexican place opened up in Excelsior, I was ecstatic! Especially since growing up in Chicago, Mexican street food was a staple for my diet. (This is not a healthy admission FYI!! LOL!) Walking into Lago I was extremely impressed by the look of the place. Great bar, clean place, and the servers were really nice. The only issue I had with the staff was their lack of knowledge of the food. What kind of place does not require every staff member to try and have intimate knowledge of the food? This is the basics. Now lets talk about the food. Besides being WAY overpriced and way under seasoned for Latin street food, it was just all okay at best. My family ordered the beef and potato tacos, steak burrito, cheese quesadilla, guacamole, fried avocado, corn cakes, and rice. I am going to go through each of these one by one. Beef Tacos w/ Potato: Yes, this mixture is traditional Mexican and I really like it. What I do not like is the fact the the mixture was way under seasoned. It was just okay. It almost had the flavor of Taco Bell, which is not a compliment. The other thing that really made me upset was that there was no limes given with my tacos. You have to serve lime with these tacos, it is the acid it needs. Steak Burrito: I saw another post about this burrito reminding them of Chipotle, to which I believe that is insulting to Chipotle. The steak had no flavor at all. I was looking forward to a nicely grilled flank steak that was well seasoned or marinated, then placed in the burrito. Instead I got this nasty grey steak with way to much iceberg lettuce and again under-seasoned beans and what ever else was in there. ----I did get a side of "Hot Sauce" which again had no flavor at all. Cheese Quesadilla: These were okay, like they should be. My only problem here was that sour creme, or better yet Mexican Crema was not offered when I ordered. Also, I was told that the only was to get Cheese only Quesadilla was to get them from the kids menu, because the full size was steak only. I HATE when a place tells me no. I am a customer, I don't care if it is not on your menu, you have tortillas and cheese, go make it. Guacamole: First off it is not even on the menu by it self. Second of all, if I order it, wouldn't you think to ask if I need chips. Not here, just the guac.... My other issue is again under seasoning. I don't know if they just ran out of salt and pepper, but had no flavor. Needed more onion, jalapeño, lime, and especially cilantro!! Fried Avocado - Okay I love when places try something new, but this was a miss for me. It was just a nasty greasy mess that was just mush on mush. I think this could be successful, but the chef needs to tweak this more. Think texture, and maybe some lime zest in the batter. Just needs something that is missing. Corn Cakes: Yet again under seasoned, and so greasy! I love corn cakes, and these just need some help and could be great. Your cook is just messing you up! Rice: Having a Mexican Grandmother beans and rice are a passion of mine. My first issue was I was told you do not offer beans and rice together...Seriously!? The second issue was that your rice is not fresh. You can taste it at the first bite that the rice was cooked a few days ago, or is out of a can. This is just insulting! I am not going to give up on this place, because Excelsior really needs a great Mexican spot. But, the owner needs to kick his chefs into high gear and get them working on the food. Also, his staff needs to learn their menu and be a little more flexible with what they can do. Get it fixed guys, Excelsior needs this place to work! read more
