Fantastic meal to eat while playing trivia at the Curious Crow Company next door! We split the burritos rancheros which was perfect for the two of us, and had just the right combination of shredded beef and cheese. Would like to go back and try more of their options. read more

The food is excellent. Start with free corn chips and salsa. It is thin and crispy,very tasty snacks. Young and energetic waiter saw we are running low with the chips and grab us the second bucket of chips and a bowl of salsa. He also checked if we need another salsa bowl. The similar chips with salsa sell for 4 dollars at chipotle, but free here. I had steak fajitas quesadillas. It has lot of steak strips. At one time, I am worried if they will be able to make any money from the dish. It is very generous serving portion and tastes really good. The service is excellent. My family had another great dinner! Nice atmosphere with booth or table seating and a central bar. The staff have always been friendly and attentive. Our favorite dish tonight was the taquitos! Nice option for Mexican in the area. we usually get Don Julios which I like a little better. Ordered some take out. They have a pretty big menu to choose from. Tried the shrimp fajita nachos which were smothered in grilled bell peppers and thick white cheese and a ton of plump shrimp which was the best part. Husband had the steak burrito which didn't have much meat in it. Chips are good. May swing back to try some more and use one of the coupons in the clipppers. read more

Even on what has to be the busiest evening for this restaurant (Cinco de Mayo), this service is muy excellente! Yes, it was packed and servers were scrambling (just from sheer volume of orders); but they made our visit a pleasant one. The Chili Verde is everything that I love: nicely grilled beef & delicious tomatillo (the green part of the dish). We loved the El Loro by us in Mounds View and would order from there all the time - super sad to see that location close. Cue tonight when I'm having a major hankering for their chips and guac so we decide to order take-out from the location in Circle Pines because it was the next closest. I will preface this by saying this is a review ONLY for ordering take-out from this location. The guac was fine but my quesadilla was...not a quesadilla. For $10.25, I open my take-out container to find this greasy tortilla shell filled with a bunch of chicken and then another tortilla shell on top. Last time I checked you fold a tortilla shell with the stuff inside and then cut into triangles. Am I right? These pictures don't even do justice to how horrible this actually looked in person. Oh, also, there was no sour cream like promised. My husband's beef enchiladas had almost no beef - it was literally a few chunks of beef and a little bit of cheese. For almost $30, this was a huge waste of money and since we're generally take-out people when it comes to Mexican food, it's safe to say we will not be back! read more

Finding good Mexican in Minneapolis/st paul had been an insane challenge for us when we lived here. FINALLY we found this place! The salsa is so amazing I could drink it! So when we came back to visit four years later we were praying this place was still here and amazing.....we found it's not only here but also just as amazing and the interior is even better! Pretty. Darn. Tasty. Only after I finished half my food did I think about taking a picture of it. A plate that's been totally ravished isn't nearly as appealing than a fresh sizzling plate full of fajita goodness. The chips and salsa that came before the meal was probably my favorite part - specifically the chips. They were fresh and warm...mmm. The salsa had good flavor but zero spice. I had chicken fajitas and they were ok. Not exceptional, but acceptable. I'll probably order the steak next time I'm there. Service was excellent during our meal but as soon as the bill was paid the service ended. I sought out the water pitcher and filled our glasses myself. I'm self-sufficient that way. The restaurant has great ambiance. Looks like it could easily accommodate large groups if you're so inclined. Bottom line, it's good for a chain. There are many better options for Mexican in Minneapolis and St. Paul, but up in Mounds View, this is about as good as it gets. read more

I have a soft spot for parrots. This parrot moved into my neighborhood displacing the former Monterrey that was at this same location. My wife and I wanted to see what had changed. As expected the interior was redone and large colorful renditions of parrots adorn the space. The food is similar to their other locations. Fajitas for us tonight. The fajitas for two include carnitas, beef, chicken and shrimp. Comes with guacamole, sour cream, beans and rice. More than we could handle so we brought some home. Margaritas here come is three sizes big, bigger, and fishbowl. We both opted for big (16 oz). Not bad. I saw an initial write up about this location indicating they might reopen part of the space as a patio. I hope they do, that would be cool. read more

This is Leah S. neck of the woods. It's a beautiful drive all the way down Lexington Pkwy. We opened the door and were told they open at 11. I said in 2 minutes. So we wait, then someone very friendly is waving us in. It is our waiter, Oscar. He is great and very attentive. Our drinks were water and he added lemon. I ordered guacamole before we looked at the menu. It was a really good one. I was comparing the location to the others. The red sauce is not as chunky here and they don't serve the white sauce at all. I got my usual hard shell beef tacos. I like them better in Eagan. There's a slight sogginess to these, but not too bad. I had a bite of a casadilla, and I loved that. It's very roomy and clean in here, and I would come back. I like the bathrooms and they have individual wooden doors for maximum privacy. We had a very relaxing time and I'll come back. read more

After my third visit I thought it'd be time to write a review. For lack of a more creative summary, El Loro is fine and will fill you up, but no bells and whistles. Service is friendly; speed is to be expected. The dishes could use more creativity; the variety of choices is ample but the toppings are lacking in option and in amount. Two of the three times I've gone the margaritas have been tasty but weak on the liquor. I do like the interior; it's very festive and open (and larger than the outside would have you assume)! It's the only Mexican restaurant around (to the best of my knowledge) and you won't be unhappy. Just not thrilled. read more

The person which is also the manager took our drink order. Took my ID/permit, examined it. And said I couldn't get a drink because my ID/permit said under 21 until my birthday which was 3 months ago. We love El Loro & will cut these guys some slack because they are new. My husband & I went for dinner last night at 7:30. We waited 15 minutes to be seated even though there were several open tables. There was a group of 9 before us & apparently they needed to be sat before us regardless of the fact that there were several booths open for 2 but not for 9. We finally got sat & found water & ice all over the seats. We wiped them off ourselves & sat down. We ordered & our food came out with the plates piping hot. We sat there until they were luke warm waiting to find anyone who worked there to get us some silverware. We got our silverware only to dig into the bland, no seasoning & no taste meals set in front of us. The place has a lot of seating & the decor is nice. I hope they can figure out their kinks. We will try it again, but it's going to be awhile. read more

This is the worst tex-mex food I've had in the Twin Cities. I will hit the highlights so you can decide whether you're likely to agree with me or not. We went for lunch and I ordered a combo plate that included a chile relleno, an enchilada, and some other tubular thing that escapes me. The reason I can't remember is that it was pretty much exactly the same thing as the enchilada, except that one was a flour tortilla filled with coarse-ground beef and the other was a corn tortilla filled with fine-ground beef. Neither contained any seasoning except (possibly) salt. The chile relleno was undistinguished, and bland. Over the top of everything was ladled a red sauce that my lunch partner and I both agreed smelled exactly like Chef Boyardee "tomato sauce." I doubt it would be cost effective to strain out the Spagetti-O's, so I guess it's some other food service thing. I got a side of beans, and they were extremely unmemorable. The free chips came with a completely unspiced salsa and what seemed to be a very lightly spiced bowl of mayonnaise. I can't believe that was really what it was, but it sure seemed like it. On the plus side, the waiters were professional and polite. On the minus side, pretty loud Mexican music. When it gets busy it might not be so noticeable. Since there are El Loros all over and they dropped serious coin building out this space, they must have an audience. If you think catsup is spicy and you want to pretend you're having tex-mex food, or you want a (no kidding) 60 ounce margarita, this may be the place you're looking for. Today our family tried El Loro and we left dissatisfied. Like most American Mexican restaurants, the portion sizes are very large, the menu is several pages long and chips and salsa are bountiful. However, when asking the waiter for a recommendation he was not helpful only stating not to do the pork. Silverware was tossed onto the table while a server passed us by. The booth was dirty. When our food arrived, my burrito was bland with no seasoning. My steak was crispy and dry. There were shreds of carrot and cabbage mixed in with the lettuce and I assume that the lettuce was from a bagged mixed salad from a local grocery store. Coming home, my husband and I have had upset stomachs for several hours. I would not visit this place again. Chipotle would have been a better lunch. read more

She had zero personality and had no clue how to serve. She still received a tip from us of course. *The food was absolutely HORRIBLE. The tamale only came with shredded pork inside of it and it tasted old and stinky. Worst tamale I have ever tasted. Then the Chile Rellano pepper which should be deep fried was limp, soggy and had some sort of floury mash around it. The cheese tasted like Velveeta cheese. The only part that even seem partially cooked correctly was the stem of the pepper, yum a stem. My wife's order was all screwed up and blamed on the kitchen. Absolutely gross! Everything tasted old, processed and no flavor what so ever. I wouldn't feed this food to our dog. * The recommendation from another waitress was that the BEST THING was the shredded chicken. She said "It's fantastic". Well if that's the best thing that is there to eat that is a good sign not to eat there *To end the night when we had to pay, there wasn't ANY pens around. I called on Saturday morning letting the staff know that we would be bringing a large group at around 5pm. We arrived with 50 swimmers, divers and parents. Tables were already setup with chips and salsa. Each family was assigned a number to keep the billing straight. We had several servers including Ruben.
