AVOID LIBERTY / UNITED VAN LINES AT ALL COSTS - Deliberate Tampering, Privacy Violation & Massive Destruction! After using Liberty for 2 previous moves this is how they treat loyalty. This was the worst moving experience imaginable and feels like outright sabotage. After 2 previous moves through Ed Scott and besides acknowledging "never seeing anything like this", no accountability! United Van Lines crew intentionally and recklessly tampered with my personally sealed boxes - they cut them open, inserted heavy items like boxes and chairs at the bottom, then resealed them poorly. This caused catastrophic crushing and damage: over 16 garment boxes completely ruined, my wood credenza smashed (slate top shattered), leather bench badly scuffed, and virtually every item in the shipment damaged in some way. This wasn't accidental rough handling - it was purposeful interference with sealed personal property, violating my privacy and trust. They had no right to open or tamper with my sealed boxes. This conduct appears to breach federal transportation regulations criminal mischief under New Jersey law for - purposely or recklessly damaging/tampering with another's property. The financial and emotional toll has been enormous - thousands in ruined clothing, furniture, and irreplaceable items. Their claims process? A joke - $150 on almost $20K of damage that doesn't come close to covering the destruction they caused. Do NOT use Liberty/United Van Lines. I was moving from Long Island to NJ and LIberty Transportation and Storage was the company my employer contracted for the move. I was nervous about the move after reading these reviews, but my experience was nothing short of Stellar. Dave and his team showed up on time and were incredibly fast, careful, efficient and friendly. They treated my stuff as if it were their own. I could not have asked for more thoughtful and careful movers. All of my things arrived, with not a single thing damaged, inclusive of fragile china. Everything went like clockwork. Our things were unpacked and Dave insisted that I inspect everything and make sure that everything was in the room I wanted it to be in. What an amazing experience. I am writing this review in the hopes that it saves someone the trouble that I went through with Liberty Movers. I got quotes from several reputable companies, and they ended up being the lowest (for a reason). I was moving everything from a storage unit to a townhome about 20 miles away. The second they walked into my townhouse, their "lead" mover did not stop bitching and complaining that it was a two story home. They were SO rough with my belongings, my furniture is cracked, they almost snapped a leg off of one of my dressers, they damaged my headboard, etc. One of the movers wreaked of liquor, it was early in the morning and afternoon. There was only one guy who was moving constantly. The other two complained and disappeared for 10-20 minutes at a time. They told me my living room set would not fit in the basement just based on a guess and would not even attempt to bring it downstairs, and proceeded to leave it in my garage. They also left a substantial amount of stuff and boxes in my garage because they were "done" with moving. I am SO unbelievably upset with my experience. I thought using a United Vanlines affiliate was a safe bet since United moved me from California to New Jersey. So that was the moving experience, now let's talk about the people who work in the office. I worked with Laura Griffin - initially I had no issues, but she was supposed to call me the day before to confirm a timeframe and everything for the next day and she never called. I was freaking out the entire night before because I had no idea if the movers were coming or not. I called her DOZENS of times, emailed - no response until late MONDAY. My move was on Saturday. I called her to complain about my experience with the movers and she was completely unphased and rude to me on the phone. I asked her twice to have her manager call me and I have not heard from this woman Beth. It has been 3 weeks since my move. Their customer service is awful. They are unprofessional, rude, and unhelpful. Do yourself a favor and use Allied - like I should have. I will NEVER use United/Liberty again after this experience. I should have read the Yelp reviews before booking the move. Never never again. I am writing this 3 weeks after my move as I gave them ample time to reach out and try to fix this. Now I have to file a claim for my damaged furniture, which I don't expect anything good to come from. read more

Left my 82-year old mother without her belongings for weeks after promised delivery date. This company clearly lacks some fundamental customer service practices. These include good customer communication, follow up, and ownership of their own problems. My mother's belongings were picked up in early December, with a promised delivery date of the 11th - 15th. After repeated calls and more promises of action, updated delivery dates, and insincere apologies I was referred over to Mayflower customer service as it was a Mayflower moving van. Meanwhile my 82-year old mother was sleeping on the floor of her new home, because she wanted to be there on the "promised" delivery dates - which never happened. First we heard the driver was sick, then lost, then in Vegas (how a full load from NJ to WA ends up in Vegas was beyond me), then headed to Arizona where he lives, then experiencing construction delays, then black ice, then didn't schedule labor to offload her items, etc.). It was one excuse after another. Liberty didn't offer ANY consideration on the costs for weeks of delays, endless hours on the phone, and the stress of dealing with this all through the holidays. They simply referred us to file a claim with Mayflower with was equally lacking in customer service and communication skills. The management at Liberty apologized, but failed to call back when promised and seemed to push our concerns over to an employee or Mayflower. Apparently no one at Liberty Transportation has the authority nor autonomy to care for customer service disasters. Clearly tens of thousands of dollars my mother spent on this move wasn't enough to be important to Liberty nor it's management. If you intend to use this company, be prepared to heavily project manage the move, make alternate arrangements to live without your belongings for an extended period of time, and don't expect help from their management. read more

The Liberty Group/Liberty Transportation & Storage for legal purposes is a large privately held company that gets away with damages, negligence, and in addition protects their bad employees at the paying customer's expense. They sent me incompetent packers and movers who damaged numerous items. Since the move was less than 10 minutes from my house, I did not purchase insurance above the per pound insurance provided with the estimate. The salesperson assured me blanket wrapped furniture, etc. The first problem occurred when the head mover Richard Keenan showed me the antique dining room chair that he broke at the beginning of the loading. He denied responsibility and was angry at me the rest of the day, talking over me abusively and unprofessionally to me. As I unpacked in the weeks that followed the move, more damage and negligence was discovered daily. I submitted photos to Liberty but because I had not insured items for their true value, I am not being reimbursed other than by the terms of the per pound insurance included. Unfortunately, I as the "little guy" had no agency in my complaints. Never sign a contract agreeing to payment before services delivered. A lesson learned. One of the most disturbing aspects of Liberty's foul play is that the head mover Richard Keenan, who was verbally abusive with me, refused to show me the Origin Bill of Lading when the truck was loaded to drive to the Destination. He gave me this paper to sign when they wanted to leave. When I pointed out his wrongdoing, he yelled at me, threatened me, and grabbed the papers storming out of my apartment with the rest of the movers. I would not recommend this moving group to anyone. They quoted my mom (72 year old on a fixed income) for a 7 hour job which ended up taking 10 and then charged her over 50% more than her original estimate. The men were friendly but very slow.. Customer service after the fact was absolutely no help. I am very disappointed and would not tell anyone I know to use them. read more

I was moving from New Brunswick, NJ to Plainsboro, NJ so it was a local move. I found these guys through Mayflower Movers after my experience using another company to move to New Brunswick a few years ago. I will not go into details but let me just say that this time around, I planned a lot better and chose them. What they basically do is work with a select group of movers in the area and then direct you to them. Liberty Group was the one who serviced my area so, that is who we went with. From day one they have made this process so smooth I almost could not believe it! Brian came out and did the inspection and he was very professional and gave me some peace of mind when he said that it was an easy move as we are moving from a two bedroom to one bedroom. Honestly I just wanted to get the hell out of my old neighborhood as fast as possible and was very anxious. Barbara at their office was very prompt with her responses and extremely helpful. Juan and his team who arrived the day of the move where absolutely excellent and I realized that this is because they really are professionals. They showed up an hour early which I greatly appreciated and only went over one hour but did not charge us for it so basically, what we where estimated and what we actually paid (around $940) was correct. This company saved me so much stress, you have no idea. I was stressing about this move since late November and when the day came, they made it so much easier and I cannot thank them enough. I HIGHLY recommend Liberty. They are true professionals and I will definitely use this company again. read more

The one star for this place goes directly to the movers themselves, as they were great. The office, however, should get no stars for their incompetence, neglect and straight up spiteful attitudes. After emailing me a contract for my little 88 year old grandmother's move, I noticed the amount they estimated on the contract was double what was discussed. There was no way I was going to sign the contract & give her CC info until they fixed it. I emailed back EIGHT minutes later asking to please correct the error & I'd be happy to sign immediately. Needless to say the woman, Celeste, did not get back to me for almost two weeks as her vacation was much more important. When she finally called back (after my repeated emails to several people as well as voicemails) it was the Friday afternoon before my Grandmother's Monday morning move! She waited until 5:20pm Friday to email me saying since she never got my signed contract that it was never booked & there were no movers available to help my Grandmother. I emailed and called several times after that and got no response, throwing me into a panic attack. How could they blame me for an internal error, let alone have this little old woman suffer?! The 5 people I spoke with over the course of this fiasco were all unfriendly and didn't care one way or another about us. Worst customer service I've ever, ever dealt with. The company had me hanging on til Monday late afternoon before updating the contract (which I was blamed for again) and confirming a move time (which ended up incorrect anyway.) FINALLY the movers showed up around 7pm (about 12 hrs later than anticipated) and did a great job, thank God! With the exception of them, you should all be ashamed of yourselves and your behavior. Liberty has made our move a nightmare from start to finish. After using Mayflower for a cross-country move last summer, I contacted them again for a move from NJ to Boston. Mayflower referred me to Liberty. I've had so many issues with Liberty that I could write a novel, but I'll try to keep this short. To summarize: 1) Our assigned customer service person, Donna Moran, never called to schedule the pick up for our items. Finally, at 4:55 p.m. the Friday before our Monday move, I called the guy that did our quote and he told Donna that she needed to call me. Even though Liberty knew our items were in storage, Donna left a message with a 3 hour pick up window and expected that I would wait at the storage unit the whole time. The driver actually came hours later than the pick up window, but did have the courtesy to call about the delay. 2) Liberty agreed verbally and in writing to reassemble the furniture that was disassembled during our first move. (It's been in storage since that time). When it came time to perform, Liberty refused to do so. They now claim that we will need to pay out of pocket for reassembly even though that cost was covered in our binding estimate. 3) Liberty originally told us it would take 2 to 3 days to move our things. They then adjusted the delivery window and told us it was because of the weather in Boston. When the driver picked up our things, he told us that there was never any chance that our items would be delivered in 2 or 3 days. Liberty had always intended to deliver the items a full week after pick-up because that's when they had a load to pick up in the Boston area. I understand the need to make a profit by lining up shipments moving North and South, but I don't understand why I was lied to about it. 4) Every time I speak to Liberty about any of these issues, their story changes. If one person offers to do something to address our concerns, someone else at the company reverses the decision. I've come to believe that they have been lying to me from day 1 and never had any intent to honor their promises. We had a very good move using Mayflower in July, so I know that there are good movers out there. Liberty is not one of them. Steer clear! read more

We moved from North Jersey to Florida. Salesperson answered all questions prior to contracting but after move did not return any calls. Was told I could track delivery but had to call office during business hours to get status reports. Was told delivery window was from the 6th - 13th. When I checked status, truck still in Jersey on 6th. Now they want to deliver on last day of delivery window which I notified office and salesperson I was not available. Although we initially had some concerns about the billing of our move, we received a more than satisfactory response from a letter we sent to Liberty Transportation. A phone message left by the President followed a call from the General Manager, Jeff Randolph. Mr. Randolph, in a very professional way, explained some issues, answered my concerns and the company admitted that our move, in some respects, could have been handled better. We received a much appreciated apology from Mr. Randolph and are appreciative of his response. As novices at moving, we realize that we should have been more questioning. Our advice to anyone moving, get estimates, ask questions and don't be afraid to question what seems unclear. read more

We used Liberty to move cross-country and store our belongings for a couple of months while we closed on a house purchase. This is a true story: While loading the van with our personal belongings, my husband witnessed the driver accept a wad of cash from some unknown guy. When he asked about it, the driver explained that he was disposing of some slabs of granite for the guy, and that the granite would be unloaded before our shipment was brought to storage. Fast forward to a couple of months later, when we actually had our items delivered, our bill was higher than our "not-to-exceed" amount and includes 1,000 pounds more in the actual weigh-in than the estimate. Liberty further charged us for the original quoted storage time when we were actually in storage for fewer days. On top of that, they broke one of our end-tables. We have been emailing with them for about four weeks now and our contact (the assistant of the sales guy) blandly told us she couldn't do anything to escalate our questions and suggested we contact customer service. Will keep the readers posted, but so far I cannot recommend these guys. I can't believe United VanLines subcontracts to them. read more

A serious disconnect between Sales and Operations, multiple times when we were given misinformation by their sales "professional," lack of timely responses, poor communication and the arrogance of management forced us to choose another mover at the 11th hour. Be careful here. Contracted with Liberty Group to move house from NJ. Half went to South Carolina and half one town over. SC final bill was 10% over estimate and local was 67% over estimate. Very professional before sale, less so after sale. No damage to goods or lost goods but very frustrated about bill. said they moved more pictures then they thought. Even if true, I don't see how this drives up the cost 67%. Make sure you know rules on local moves. Wouldn't use unless they guarantee a max $. read more

DO NOT USE,!!! Promised my items on the date I wanted them after being in storage for a few months. I called a week before to confirm and they said everything was fine. I called the day before and guess what???? Sorry, too busy you will have to wait 10 days! House was damaged, items, valuable of course, missing and broken. United claims in Missouri, still waiting 4 months later to wrap things up. I would never use them! read more

I DON'T WANT THIS TO HAPPEN TO YOU!!! If I could give a zero I would. DO NOT use this outfit!! They were previously located in Union, NJ. This was the wrong company to use from the beginning. We relocated from Maplewood, NJ to Bethlehem, PA. They showed up with a straight job, when it should have been a trailer. So, because the estimator low balled the job, they had to call out another truck later which doubled the cost of the move. We actually missed our closing, because the movers were waiting on another truck to arrive for loading. Later, I found that 11 of 27 Boxes of vinyl records had been stolen. Not only that, all of my record boxes had been cut open (even though I labeled them books). I had a collection of over 2000 records. In addition, they stole some family heirlooms. My bed actually wound up breaking, because it wasn't set up properly. When I contacted them they did nothing about it. Their workers are a bunch of crooks and management is non-responsive. Don't let them leave your house without checking EVERYTHING!! All they want is money!! This outfit doesn't understand what "Great Customer Service" means. I'm about to relocate again and they won't be getting a call. read more

Unprofessional movers- very slow. Damaged our table while packing and claimed it was there from before. One of the men took a 2 hour nap in between packing. Left discarded packing material back in the house. Took almost 8 hours to move and was so slow that in the end we started unloading moxes ourselves from truck to our house. Terrible experience. Though only 80% of the stuff originally estimated was moved, received a bill higher the an original estimate with no explanation. No procedure to dispute the bill. Moving crew broke a mirror while loading and denied it was ever loaded in the unloading site. read more
