My husband and I ride our bikes all around San Diego. We have tried almost every bike shop for something. Erik was working here and was excellent. He was knowledgeable , friendly and efficient. I had just purchased a new frame and needed to have my parts switched from my other bike. Erik said Rocky was an excellent mechanic and would do it for $150. More than the shop I usually go to but he said he was worth it. We brought our parts and the frame in. Rocky took off the parts and put in a box. It should only take a few days. After the second week, we called to check on the bike and were told that Rocky decided to go on vacation (no prior notice) and nobody else could finish the bike. He was due back at the end of the week. Called the next week - he decided he needed a longer vacation. Still nobody else could put my bike together. Called again and talked to Brian (the owner) who told me he would make sure Rocky would get to it the next day. Called back the next week - I am upset now and wanted to know when my bike would be done. Rocky had misplaced some parts. It was supposed to be done at the end of the week. Mid week my husband gets a call. They can't find our wheels (in the wheel bag that we brought). Brian calls the next day and wants to know where the tires are... Wherever Rocky put them. Went to pick up bike and tried not to talk because I was so angry that it took almost a month. I was charged $175! I was also given "extra parts" ?? My bike had tires that were not the ones that I came in with in addition to being put on backwards (tread going wrong direction). Thought I would consider it a learning experience to NEVER go to this shop again. Two months down the road and my bike is ticking. Take it to Revolution (BEST bike shop by the way) and find that the wrong Campi crank bearings were installed. I looked at my "extra parts" and the correct bearings were not installed but given to me as extra parts. Now my bike has to be repaired because he did not put in the correct parts that were not only paid for but he had them! I WOULD NOT GO TO THIS SHOP FOR ANYTHING!! read more

Great local bike shop. The wife and I were out on a grocery run and she got a thorn in her tire. We happened to be hobbling distance to this shop so we dropped in. We were fixed and back on the road with a spare tube and good advice. First class bike shop/ service! read more

Just picked up my Rivendell that was in for a full tear down / clean / rebuild / new cables / new front sprockets / new rear derailleur / frame saver treatment (yes, it's a steel bike) and more. Just one of the extra touchs worth noting: Rocky installed those little frame/paint disk protectors on the rear brake cable without me even asking for same. The ride home was a JOY! Rocky did a wonderful job and it feels like I have a brand new bike. Highly recommend Brian (new owner) and Rocky (best mechanic) for your every bike need. AND, it's extra nice to support small/local businesses like Leucadia Cyclery. Bret read more

Love stopping in to this little bike shop in Leucadia. This is where I got my first pair of padded big shorts and jersey. They helped me pick out exactly what I needed, didn't try to over sell anything, and I got it at a great price. They also helped me change my front tube for the first time and showed me how to do it myself. Great guys! read more

Very fast, helpful and knowledgeable. I had two flat tires in one day and they replaced them in minutes. I also learned a lot about my bike. Great shop read more

I read some of the earlier reviews about people bringing in "beater, low-end" bikes, and I did not have the same experience. My husband, daughter, and I moved to the beach in south Carlsbad and finally started using our 10 year old Schwinn bikes we were never able to ride when we lived inland due to all the steep hills. They were in bad shape but we really didn't care because they got us to and from our house to all the restaurants and shops we love in Leucadia. My husband has taken our bikes in for flat repairs several times since (Fred, the owner, advised my husband not to ride on the paved trail parallel to coast highway, as the trail in covered with thorns). On one recent ride on my new bike from Costco, we stopped in because my chain kept slipping off and the bike would not shift down to first gear. Fred recommended shortening the chain and explained the gear mechanism had something blocking the movement to first gear. He offered to fix it for $20, which i thought was reasonable. He DID say the bike had cheaper components and I should not expect to ride problem free with this bike for very many years. He was very respectful, and I thought, very honest. I looked at the bikes in his shop, and the Bianchi Milano caught my eye. He answered my questions about it, but did not try to sell it to me. He said I was welcome to test ride it anytime. I went home and did some online research, and went back a week later for a test ride. I loved it and could definitely feel the difference in quality. It wasn't cheap, but I bought it, confident I would be provided great support and customer service in the future, if needed. Fred and his wife were a pleasure to talk to, and I think Fred probably knows everything about bicycles that can possibly be known, lol. Definitely recommend! read more

Seriously the best bike shop. Extremely helpful, super nice and friendly, and always willing to do what they can to make sure you're back out the door and riding ASAP. Beyond that they also bring a sense of community. It feels nice to support a local business over Amazon or Competitive Cyclist, and they helped add to that sense of community by organizing weekly group rides. Seriously the greatest! Wish I could give them 6 stars read more

Absolutely kindest and most honest shop in town!! I came in with a flat on my tubeless gravel bike. Not only did they immediately repair the tire, along with new rim tape, but they also fixed a droopy chain and a loose headset for me that they noticed was needed. I was so glad to meet Bryan the owner and Rocky whos been a bike mechanic since 1987. Top notch shop!! read more

I've never entered this store, but will never plan to be a patron. I called to ask some questions about fixing a bike and was shocked by how rude and insulting the staff member was. read more

Great service! It's almost impossible to come by a mountain bike for an 11 year old during these times. But when I called Leucadia Cyclery, Brian told me they had 2 bikes being shipped to their store. Brian was very responsive, each time I called to check to see if the bike had come in. He also refused a deposit and gave me his word that when the bike arrived, it had my name on it. Even after a busy Memorial Day Weekend. We picked up the bike today, it's amazing and my son is a happy boy. They even helped me with assembling my bike rack! read more

The folks at Leucadia Cyclery are really wonderful. They are so fair here is never a problem replacing something simple like a light or major like a tune-up. They also know the roads well and suggest great training rides, as well as being supportive with training advice. read more

Best bike shop in San Diego hands down. I needed a repair before a ride and the owner went out of his way to take care of it. I don't know how the staff manages to go above and beyond with how busy they are, but they do. Great experience all around. read more

Great service and reasonable pricing! Went to get my tire fixed and they not only fixed the issue, but explained to me how I could service it myself next time. Thanks! read more

Went in hoping to order two bike parts. Waited about a 1/2 hour to get some help from Eric. When Eric finally searched the computer, he told me the vendor was all out. I asked if there was an another vendor. He then proceeded to ignore me to help other people. "I need to help other people." There were two other people working in the shop. I have never felt so ignored in a local business. A black gentleman and his bike were waiting outside, he too was ignored and he finally left. I felt like Rosa Parks. Several people saw me waiting and said I could go ahead of them but that I was still ignored. I finally just left. I would give this bike shop a zero stars if it were possible. Worst customer service. read more

If you're looking for a great bike fit, Leucadia Cyclery is the place to go! After a 7-year hiatus of being off the bike I needed some serious help and Bryan was super helpful in getting me dialed back into a proper fit. By attaching sensors to several points he was able to identify improper foot placement, movement patterns, angles, asymmetries, etc. and make all of the proper adjustments necessary. Thanks Leucadia Cyclery, I now feel solid, strong and most importantly comfortable back on the bike and enjoying my rides. read more

Ok shop . The guy charged more then price tag on our item said price was outdated. Not going back

New ownership may not last long. Dropped off a bike for service last Monday (5/6/2019). Received no receipt, asked them to call with cost estimate. Said should be done in a few days. Called Thursday, was told they needed to check with mechanic on status and they'd call back. Called Saturday, said he had no info... would call back Monday. Meanwhile bike is sitting in shop and it should have been easy to determine if anything was done. No return call Monday. Tuesday called again, took multiple questions to determine nothing had been done on the bike. Went by early afternoon and picked up my bike. Mechanic seemed a bit embarassed, customer rep I had just talked to was on phone, seemed to be causally chatting, and could see I was there to get bike. Too busy say anything I suppose. Colossal waste of time due to lack of management. Now just glad to have the bike back. Hope no one 'loses' a nice bike dropped off for repair because of their mismanagement. read more

This shop is great. The owner and workers are all friendly and helpful. I bought my first hybrid bike from here about 10 years ago. About 7 years ago I had an accident on my bike and bent a few essential components. After taking it into the shop they offered to fix it for free since I had bought my bike from them. This place has a customer service focused low key atmosphere that keeps me recommending it to friends and family! Check it out! read more

I went there out of homage to Fred, let me tell you there no Fred and Jules. I brought in a specialty bike this last summer for a new tire they were supposed to order. 6 months go by and they still haven't got the tire. I've checked in I've called several times and when I finally just went to get my tire back of course they lost it. Hopefully Brian can find it , I sent him a photo and he says he will return it to my house. I really hope I do get it back. A month or two I can understand but six months with not even a phone call. The conclusion of this was the owner did call me back finally and said that he lost the tire but he would replace the tire with no charge to me, and install it, no charge he said due to the length of the delay. When I went back to get the tire, remarkably they found my old tire the owner wouldn't even come out to greet me and they just handed it back what a disappointment. Six months with no bike. Fred did such a great job , This guy is going to tear it down if he continues to work it this way. read more

Leucadia Cyclery - The tire that never came... still waiting 6 months - Bikes Near Me - Encinitas, California

Hello Yelpers , I have spent much of my life in & around bicycles which may be a subject at a later time -- I wandered into Leucadia Cyclery yesterday -- Jam packed with bikes -- every square inch of the place is full of "stuff" much like a old NYC or SF bicycle store . They do many custom builds from the frame up and sell basically three brands Bianchi , Marin & Time along with some great deals on Klein frames ... But my review is on FRED Fred is extremely knowledgable in all aspects of cycling , a mature veteran of owning a customer service retail establishment for a long time. No college age bike racer here that judges you by your age / appearance. Fred seems to want each individual with his/her specific needs . With Fred he is a A-Z type of shop owner ,, I have seen him doing repairs and that is important in understanding the finished product . Reading his reviews here his labor is about as professional as his general knowledge and sales . If in Leucadia area and in need of a new bicycle or repair Fred is a serious consideration and should be at the top of your list .. The Time Racing Road bikes are serious machines ,, be prepared to spend $6,000 - $10,000 this is a unique ride .. I am not a huge fan of Bianchi today personally yet they do make a good value bicycle and depending on your budget give them a look also -- read more

I first went to Leucadia Cyclery back in 1994 when the cassette on my road bike (just started road roading back then and knew almost nothing - make that I knew nothing) went "kapoof" in the middle of a ride and little ball bearings rolled everywhere. Fred, the owner, happened to be riding by on his way to open shop. He stopped, helped me piece it together so I could ride slowly, and suggested I stop in his shop and he could fix it up better. I didn't have my wallet with me. He said not to worry, I can get it fixed on the spot and come back later and pay him. So I did. I ended up buying 2 more bikes from him over the next 6 years, one road and one Mtn Bike. Both were great and I always got good service. I recently moved more inland so getting to Fred's shop is difficult. I am thinking about getting my mtn bike rebuilt from the frame up. It is almost 10 years old. If I do I will probably have Fred do it. Just a note on some of the negative reviews. Regarding the slow service, it is a small shop. Fred tries to do just about all the customer interaction himself. I have at time waited 10-15 minutes for my turn, but it is always worth it. He usually has some pretty good feedback. Fred also talked me out of getting a bunch of repairs done on that bike that broke down when I first met him. He said the repairs would be almsot as much as a new bike. He was right, I'm glad I bought a new bike. I can say perhaps the only bad service I rec'd there was from an employee (no idea if this person works there anymore - it goes back 9 years) but when I bought my road bike from them in 2001, I kept getting flats. I was still fairly novice at a lot of bike stuff. I asked for something more puncture proff. What they sold me still sucked. I ended up researching tires online and found what I needed. I still use that brand of tires to this day and rarely get flats. Maybe 5 flats in 15,000 miles. (Continental Gator Skins by the way). Anyway, 16-17 years of going there and just one bad experience. I'll take it. read more

I have known Fred for over 20 years and have found him to be knowledgable, honest and caring. He will never sell or charge you for something that is not absolutely necessary! Also, he does quiet a bit of rework on what other bike shops have screwed up. This is the only place I take my bikes for service. He is very good about answering his emails which makes the whole process so much easier. I hope you enjoy your experience at this family owned and operated bike shop as much as we have :) read more

Fred is awesome... If you are a serious road biker or mountain biker... or just want good repairs or pretty decent advice then go to this store... however, Fred does take more time and in some cases charges a bit more on repairs.. but the repairs are the best in the area (in my opinion) and well worth your money read more

Yes indeed, Fred is the man. I have not purchased any of my bike through him but have purchased many parts, their prices are fair. I have also had him tune all my road bikes and my tandem and can tell you there are none better for the job. I love the way my bikes shift when they are fresh out of the shop being tuned by Fred. I will continue to take my stuff there because he knows what he is doing. read more

I have not gone to Leucadia Cyclery or any other bike shop for years due to the fact that I have not been riding a bike. I have a worsening back condition and felt that it was good idea to start riding a bike again. I must be honest, I did shop at many other bike shops in the pursuit of a bike. From Del Mar to Dana Point to Lake Forest in Irvine. I could not believe the amount of shops that just don't know anything about Customer Service, Professional Bike Service, or just general knowledge of the biking industry... Classic example - Amazon Bikes in Oceanside being the WORST SHOP in North County! You should see the crappy repair to my girlfriends bike. Then one day I walked back into Leucadia Cyclery!! Wow; the owner Fred what a "Professional". He and his staff are great! I can't say enough about their Customer Service - Very Knowledgable - They take time to Explain your Options - Asks How and Where You will Be Riding to Serve You Better - Communicates Well, Both via Phone and Email - Sets Up the Bike for the Rider. This is the type of shop you could call and they would wait for you if you were running a little late. Family Style Shop! Professional Bike Service - Very Knowledgable of Product Lines - Works with Your Budget - Very Accurate Tune Up - Real Test Rides - Best of All, STANDS BEHIND HIS WORK. What a nice experience dealing with Leucadia Cyclery. I recommend this place to everyone. Not the largest place on earth, but is worth the ride to their shop. Its nice doing something once, time is money. In my few times there in the last month, I have seen multiple customers get immediate help and plenty of fixes right away. Anthony San Miguel read more

I drove several hours to get to this bicycle shop and purchased my first Time Fluidity roadbike from this shop several months ago. It was the best purchase I ever made! It is a small shop, but it comes with an outstanding level of customer service, which is what it's known for. While there I purchased a bike for my wife as well. I admired Fred for his honesty, advice and sincerity with my purchase. I only wished he had a shop closer to where I reside. read more

this shop is fantastic, I have a manual wheelchair with bike tires and got a flat...in/out and I was mobile again. I called Pacific bike shop first and when I told them it was for a wheelchair, they "refused" to help me...didn't even offer to try to help or ask questions. read more

Ended up here when my boyfriend's brakes snapped. We had driven up to just cycle around the beach and brought our beater bikes so we wouldn't worry about them getting stolen. It just needed a new cable. We hobbled in and asked real nice if the guy could fix. He was talking a lot with someone and rather rudely snarled that the bike was not worth fixing, but he'd be glad to lend us a tool to take off the brake assembly. Ok so better to send us off on foot far from the car with failing brakes? Really? Um, dangerous and snooty. How disappointing. Our day was kind of ruined and what a nasty encounter. My boyfriend had to waddle most of the way back to the car using his feet on the road as brakes. Super dangerous crossing the 101. Eeeeek. Just because it's a beater bike doesn't mean it's not worth fixing. Safety anyone? read more

I just bought two bikes here and am very impressed with this place. I've shopped for bikes for years and finally found the quality and price I was looking for. I bought last year's models for 20-30% off and got great value. The owner Fred helped me and was a great source for info. Fred knows his stuff and only carries quality products at fair prices. Fred's warranty and service can't be beat. With his lifetime service and adjustments and friendly repair rates, buying from him will pay you back in the long run. 5 stars all the way! read more

Leucadia Cyclery has been open for as long as I can remember. When I was a wee one, my dad always took our bikes to Fred. And when I became of age, I too only took my bike to Fred. It's a great local shop. Personal service. Fred is always there when I go in, along with his son, or his lady. When I was a youngin' and didn't drive, I would always go over there to fill up my bike tires. Because he has free air on the side of his shop, and he would always let me use the extender piece for the air nozzle. Recently I got my bike tire changed and my bike started having problems after, so I called, slightly displeased, and asked if he would fix the problem. I went over there and he oiled my bike and sent me back on my way. And didn't charge me. Long live Leucadia Cyclery!! read more

When I first moved here I took my bike in for what I thought was going to be a tune up. They owner, who was very nice, told me it was going to cost me about $600.00 to get my bike up and running again which is more than what I paid for the bike. It seemed like a good idea just to buy a new bike but everything he suggested was very expensive. You can't even get a cruiser here for less than $500.00 bucks. I want to support this local business but they are WAY out of my price range. It's a shame too because all the Walmart and Target bikes are out of stock. Someone around here must sell bikes to the lower class, no? read more
