Hot Tub Outpost

Just had a very frustrating experience. Ordered incorrect…read morepart. Went back and forth over e-mail. Finally decided to throw out the parts vice paying for return postage and take a 15% restock fee. Hottuboutpost did make a reasonable offer to exchange the parts.

Unfortunately, I feel a company often shows its true colors when it comes time to handle a simple…read morecustomer mistake. I placed an order for several items, including an ozonator, which arrived quickly and appeared to be new and in good condition. I have no complaints about that part of the transaction. However, I also accidentally ordered the wrong parts. When I contacted the company about returning them, I was surprised to learn that I would not only be responsible for the original shipping costs--which I can somewhat understand since the order initially qualified for free shipping--but I would also be charged a 15% restocking fee. The shipping charge is understandable. The 15% restocking fee is where I have an issue. If the parts are returned unused, unopened, and in resalable condition, charging an additional 15% simply because a customer made an ordering mistake feels less like recovering an actual expense and more like profiting from that mistake. Good customer service isn't only about how quickly a company takes your money and ships an order. It's also about how customers are treated when something doesn't go perfectly. Policies like this leave customers with the impression: "Make sure you never make a mistake when ordering from us, because we'll make a little extra money from you if you do." That's disappointing, especially when I had an otherwise positive experience with the initial purchase. A reasonable return policy builds customer loyalty. Adding multiple charges to a simple return does the opposite.
