I'm starting my journey of finding the best donuts in the Tacoma area, and I was very curious to try Legendary Donuts. I stopped in about 830am on a Wednesday and there were only a few people in line and a wide variety of donuts available, there was only one person working the counter and she was very helpful in answering any questions we had about the donuts. The donuts themselves were a very mixed bag, with some tasting a lot more fresh than others. The PB&J (stuffed) and Raspberry Pull Apart were both very tasty and relatively fresh. I can't say the same about the Ice Cream Sundae donut, which looked great, but the donut itself was very dry and a bit stale. The mini filled donuts were just ok, and not pictured but we also tried a strawberry frosting donut which I thought was overly sweet. Overall, I think its a decent donut shop, but I will look elsewhere in my search for the very best donuts in Tacoma. read more

I actually HATE donuts. Like they are not anything I am ever interested in eating at all. EVER. My husband usually gets Paos or Safeway in a pinch... but wevev never tried Legendary. My sisters wedding was last night and apparently she ordered a ton of mini donuts for the "late night" snack. When she went to pick up her order, there had a been a mistake and there were no donuts. The Tacoma location comped her 4 large boxes of whatever donuts she wanted for free. Although it was their mistake, in this day with prices and society I feel like a lot of places (especially a chain) wouldnt do something like this. This was a really great move on their part- especially on her wedding day. The donuts looked incredible- she chose so many different styles and each one looked so nicely decorated. As I mentioned I really have zero taste for donuts, but I did snag a few to bring home for my husband. I ended up trying a bite of this chocolate thing- chocolate donut with chocolate frosting, jam in the middle with caramel and whip on top. OMG OMG OMG OMG amazing! it didn't taste like a donut at all- it was more like a fudgy brownie. Yes it was sweet- but honestly I didn't think it was overly sweet or taste just like straight sugar. I also had a very small taste of the maple bacon... it wasn't my favorite but it was 100% better than any other maple bar I've ever had. The flavors are definitely there! If i were to get donuts I would absolutely come here! I was super impressed! Usually if something is overly decorated its going to taste like crap. This was not the case here. I've been to legendary donuts, maybe five times. This location in Tacoma, one in Frederickson near Puyallup and one in Orting. What I wanna know is, is it a prerequisite to hire bad attitude, condescending, zero personality, I wish you didn't come in here and bug me, bitter people? Because out of the five times I've been, four times at least, have made me feel that way. They just couldn't be bothered, no personality and I literally have to work up the courage to go in there to have somebody be condescending to me why? I'm surprised by some of the reviews because I popped in here unexpectedly on a Friday afternoon. Donuts were well stocked and all I wanted was a coffee. The barista was super nice, and the latte was REALLY good!! The smell of the donuts were so un-resistible that I had to peek at them. I saw the BIGGEST maple bar I've ever seen in the glass. My husband is a sucker for maple bars, so I picked him up one. When I gave it to him, he ate it in record time. He said it was one of the best maple bars he's ever had - and that's saying something. I've been here several times and just realized I've never written a review, but after this most recent visit had two of my favorite donuts ever from Legendary. Not quite what I expected for a donut spot when I walked in as far as decor. Very clean and had a very bakery style set up so it was a pleasant surprise. The donuts are shockingly ginormous. Bigger than my hand on some and I have long fingers. The normal long John's you see at your usual donut shops are double the width so you definitely get your money's worth. The donuts are light and fluffy like what I appreciate in a yeast donut. I got the cinnamon twist which was good but I only ate half since it was bigger than usual. That's not a bad thing since I can save the other half for my afternoon dessert. Score! Parking was easy since there is plenty on the street but that could of also been because I went on a weekday morning. It's a definite must stop by just to see the size of their donuts if anything. Went here today for a doughnut and coffee for New Year's Eve, which was on a Sunday for a breakfast coffee and doughnut. The place was totally empty. Service was fine, but confusion as to what a 16oz latte was made with, 2 or 3 espresso shots. That has to be the most popular drink with a donut and there is confusion on how to make it? And then the coffee was so scalded that it tasted burnt. It was bad. The doughnuts were fine, but so sweet. I know it's a doughnut (relax... I know that sounds weird) but I ordered the crème brûlée doughnut which had a whiskey cream. The brûlée was awesome, brûléed very nice, but the cream was just so sweet, no balance of cream and whiskey ( which was what they said it would taste like) just one note sweet on sweet. Hubby ordered the Apple fritter which was okay, but tasted a little stale. I wish I would have bought the chocolate glazed donut which came out freshly made aa we were waiting. Rookie mistake. We probably won't be back, which bums me out, as we try to support local businesses. Next up to try - Paos, which was unfortunately closed for New Year's Eve breakfast. I tried the chocolate cake w/ chocolate frosting & caramel drizzle (4/5), apple fritter (3/5), maple covered cinnamon bun (3/5) and raised bourbon cream ball (3/5). All were a bit dry, the fritter was slightly overcooked/burnt, and the cinnamon bun was too sweet. Something about the texture on the cinnamon bun was off as well (a bit on the rubbery side). For $2-3/donut (which is most definitely overpriced), I expect better. They also charged a 3% service fee, the first I've seen of this in the area. I get that small businesses are struggling right now, but that's not an excuse to fleece your customers. There are other, smaller mom & pop donut shops in the area that have fresher offerings and execute the basics better. Try those instead. read more

I have been to several other Legendary locations and this one is my fvaorite. I love how one wall is a garage door, which they open during the warmer months. I love sitting on the bar height chairs with a long table facing the street. I happily eat my donut and people watch. I love their maple bacon ball. It's small and perfect for me. My hubby loves their apple fritter. The other donuts are delicious as well. I wasn't sure what to expect here. I saw photos, but never realized how extra large their doughnuts were until I physically laid eyes on them myself. I arrived around 2:30pm on a Sunday and there was still a good selection to choose from. I had some people coming over, and decided to get their Amateur box, which is a dozen of their basic doughnuts for $18.99. That includes their plain glazed, maple and chocolate bars, old fashions, the double chocolate or blueberry cake doughnuts, or powdered sugar/cinnamon rolled ones. The tier goes up from there depending if you choose their famous or legendary boxes. In addition to the dozen, I also got a treat for myself and my boyfriend's kids. We tried the raspberry pull apart doughnut, and 2 blue berry fritters. The fritters were about the size of your head. Each specialty one was about $3/each. The box is big and sturdy, and comes with sniff holes for your nose's pleasure. I'm sure if I arrived earlier in the day, I would of had a bigger variety to choose from, but I was very satisfied with what I took home. Their case is decorated so beautiful, and the gal that assisted me was very helpful. Do note that this place is right off of 6th Ave, so it is street parking. I came in In the late afternoon because I had asked my daughter what she wanted for breakfast for her first day back to school. She said she wanted a cinnamon roll. The donut shop is very nice inside. They have all kinds of crazy flavors of donuts and other treats. I could see it being very fun trying out samples of each of them, but I had to narrow it down and I had committed to standard donuts that my family knew. So, we got the cinnamon roll, of course, a maple bar, the apple fritter, and a few donut bites. I tried a donut bite on the way home. It had a good flavor, but it tasted like it had been sitting out all day. When I arrived home, we tried the maple bar and apple fritter. Both much better than the donut bite. Not outstanding, but good. It wasn't a Safeway donut by any means. I have yet to try the cinnamon roll and a doubt I will get to, because it is my daughter's breakfast. They did have a cinnamon type roll covered with maple glaze that looked a little more appealing, so maybe I'll go for that one next time. We will pop it in the microwave in the morning and I'm sure she will be so pleased. All in all, they didn't seem super fresh (although it was the end of the day), but they were pretty good donuts. The woman working there was extremely friendly and chill, and that really makes a difference for me. Prices are a little high. It was a little over $10 for these things. So, some good things, some not so great, but I'm certainly willing to try out a few more of the fun ones and very interested in looking into a birthday donut. Maybe if I get there earlier in the day, I will have better luck with the freshness, although I feel like there should be a good way to store donuts so that they taste just as fresh at 4:00pm as they do at 9:00am.
