Food and service was incredible. Ambiance was lovely, right across from a park. Thoroughly recommend.

Eddie's is the sh*t when it comes to fresh seafood. Admittedly it stinks when you walk past it, but…read morefish is a smelly food so you can't really hold that against them. I have never seen a fishmongers so busy; on saturday mornings you can see people actually queuing outside just to pick up some prawns or whatever. I mean how many places can you say that about. And the fish is incredible. Having bought the aforementioned prawns (didn't queue though - not because they're not worth it, just because I'm really lazy) I can safely say they're the best in Edinburgh. They are absolutely huge, really fresh and tasted amazing. The rest of the food is awesome as well, even if you're just picking up a piece of haddock or something then it is the best place around. Admittedly slightly more expensive than the supermarkets, but when you're getting fish of this quality that is fresh every day then you can't really complain.

Although it's right in the middle of student-ville, Eddie's is well-known all over the city and once you've bought from here it's easy to see why. The staff are not only friendly but also really knowledgeable. When I went in I needed things to make a fish pie, although I didn't know which fish would be best for it. Rather than simply trying to flog me the most expensive fish they had, the guy was very patient with me and showed me loads of different options. When I used to live in Marchmont I used to see the new deiliveries coming in every day (on the rare occasions I was up early enough, that is!), so you can always be confident that the stuff they have is fresh.

I am a member of a flight crew and as I was eating dinner I was asked to get catering for a flight literally the next morning. I asked the manager if he could make me some take away (to-go) steaks cooked rare to be cooked further on the plane. (I'm a private flight attendant and we cook and plate everything onboard). He went out of his way to make sure I recieved all the items cooked perfectly. Passengers left raving about the food!!! And these are passengers that definitely eat the best steaks. The manager even talked me through a playing game plan and I ran my thoughts of the dishes with him and wow, perfect outcome. I personally got the coley fish dish and started with some cheese. I am a big bleu cheese/stilton girl and it was all amazing. Everything was so good I used the bread from my cheese to mop up every ounce of juice left from coley plate. Great service, great views, and incredible food. All local and ever changing menu to fit what's in market. You'll see handwritten additions to each menu like the cheese and fish. The steaks were the 35 day dry hung flat iron steaks.

I believe it is less than a week since they changed the menu which is why I've given them 4* rather than 3* (ideally a 3.5 would be right at the moment). There is definite potential in the food and the menu here. I have to say the dishes that I had were very tasty and just required a certain something to lift them to the next level. The desserts however were really quite excellent! The atmosphere is quirky but lovely and relaxed. I felt like I'd been transported to a village restaurant sat above the local old mans pub. The staff are incredibly friendly and if I find myself in Newington in the future I believe I will go back to sample some more of Ivan's (the Italian head chef) nosh :)

The food is splended, with the Guinea Fowl main being a particular hit with me and my fellow diners. The staff are friendly and helpful, but without being over bearing while we were thrying to enjoy our meal. There is also a lunch menu available. The New Bell has an informal atmosphere more akin to a small cafe than a restaurant, giving it a relaxed and friendly vibe over all. At the end of the night I was more than suprised at how much the meal had come to, in contrast to other restaurants of this standard. Despite the slighty expensive prices, it was agreed that the night had been a success, and we would return.
