Calzone
Paul J.

Ledo is the original Maryland-style pizza, and the Westlake location is a family favorite. Spacious with lots of room for dining in, the menu has expanded a bit from pizza and sides to include wings and calzones. Come here often enough, and you'll find soccer teams on a weekend, birthday parties, all kinds of families, because that's what Ledo's is in these parts. This time around, we got a family size pizza, some salads and wings, and a calzone. Good eats all around. If you've never tried Ledo, come out to the Westlake edition and try it out. You won't be sorry!

I feel that you're not a true Marylander unless you love Ledo's. The small, square slices are perfect. Their pepperoni is my favorite. Ideal choice for game day or party.

Tasty Pizza/Great Service Too! I recently invited a friend to join me for dinner@Ledo-Westlake. It was a busy Friday evening we got a window booth-Score! Our server promptly arrived took our drink orders. Quickly returning w/drinks, server took our pizza orders: A "Veggie" Pizza & a "Sausage/Pepperoni Onion & Extra Cheese" Pizza. About 30 mins. go by server brings our pizzas-pipping hot. Delicious fresh ingredients yes creamy melty cheese. Courteous Customer Service. See Photo!

Ledo Pizza is a whole different type of pizza. Actually, I don't even know what you would classify it as. New York? Chicago? Maryland! The buffalo chicken pizza is fantastic and one of my staple "cheat" meals. What's great about Ledo Pizza is they are constantly changing their menu and you can try a different pizza each time you come. Today when I stopped by they were advertising a honey pepperoni pizza with a sub variant as well. I told my coworker how great the buffalo chicken pizza is so he got the buffalo chicken sub. We both LOVED our meal. The service at Ledo hasn't been updated since 1999. In fact, it's one of those restaurants where you seat yourself and the waiter eventually comes to you. They even keep the menus on the table to limit their interaction. That's their thing: a no thrills, no frills place. If you're expecting great customer service with a chatty staff member then you should skip this place. The main focus of the wait staff is to bring delicious food to your mouth as quickly as possible.

A host greeted us and guided us to a table. I want to caution this is a very dimly lit restaurant (we were there around 7PM on a Sunday night) and there is a slight incline in the floor leading into one of the other rooms but there is a rug placed down in that area that somewhat helped show it was there. Service was great and attentive. Menu clearly outlined the food and drink options. Pricing seemed fair for area and quality of food. Our server asked if we were interested in additional details such as adding cheese or asking for refills. We had fresh bread and dressing delivered to us upon sitting down. Silverware was neatly wrapped and looked clean. I ordered the sausage and peppers - it was delicious. I had leftovers and the server kindly placed them in a to-go container in a bag that was hooked to the table conveniently out of the way. My fiancé reheated the leftovers upon my return home and he enjoyed the leftovers! I thought it was also a cute touch that the server check presenter had the name of the restaurant as well!

The latter could have been forgiven, except the food crashed the experience. My first time there, and likely my only time. We felt lucky to be seated. Our waitress made us look forward to what was in store. I had a local brew, Raven Rock black lager from 7 Locks Brewing. Excellent. I'll be having more of those. It was served very cold in a chilled glass. Clearly they know how to serve beer. Our table went for two of the specials: spinach ravioli in a white wine sauce, and Bronzino in a Piccata sauce. In addition we picked a classic favorite, eggplant parmigiana - and then the waiting began. Like I said that would not have been a dealbreaker if the food had been outstanding. After 45 minutes, I asked one of the waitresses if she could check on our food. To her credit she did. She returned in short order and told us that there was a table in front of us, informed us that all the meals were made from scratch, and said they would definitely be worth waiting for. If only. The Bronzino filet was doused in the piccata, which completely overshadowed the taste of the fish. What I could taste of the fish was not that great. The dinner came with spaghetti, which was delicious, and vegetables, which were also very tasty however, they were soaked in butter. The ravioli got passed around our table and ended up mostly uneaten. It was drenched in butter and salt. Not subtle at all. I peeled open one of the raviolis to try the spinach and it was quite good. Too bad it was hard to taste midst all of that butter and salt. The eggplant Parmesan came covered in cheese, and I mean a lot of cheese. I like cheese, but I also like eggplant and it was hard to find in the midst of all that cheese. I noticed that only about a quarter of it was eaten by my friend who ordered it. Sorry to say the food did not live up to expectations, and that's the bottom line.

The decor is old school Italian restaurant from the 60s or 70s. The menu is 80% Southern Italian with one small section dedicated to Argentinian dishes. I started with two empanadas, one meat and the other ham and cheese, which are very typical in Argentinian restaurants. What was not typical is that they were fried, not baked, as it is tradional. They were quite oily, but the meat stuffing was good. I followed with a bife the chorizo (which is an Argentinian cut of steak comparable to a NY Strip, and it does not contain any sausage). I ordered it medium rare. It came out with French fries an small salad. The fries were freshly cut and fried and the small green salad was well dressed. The steak was tough, full of gristle (see Pic). I have had bife de chorizo and NY Strips and are not like that at all, so I don't know what was the cut I was served. The service took sometime maybe because I think the owner/chef was y hanging some paintings (why? Who knows) and that may have interfered with his cooking. I lived many years in Miami and they have really great, truly Argentinian restaurants there, so I was dissapointed with my experience here.

From the moment we arrived we were greeted like we were the most valuable customer. All staff were personable and very gracious & attentive throughout the evening. Food was excellent. We started with calamari to share which was tasty and melted in your mouth like butter, cooked to perfection & no need for marinara sauce that came with it, squeeze of lemon was perfect. The group ordered Quattro Formaggio 10" pizza, looked delicious & was scarfed down. 2nd pizza ordered, 14" 3-topping combo, excellent crust (thin), toppings were flavorful with the right amount of cheese to balance. Pasta dish (Pasta Ragu) also ordered and thoroughly enjoyed I personally had the chicken Piccata served over spaghetti which was best I've had in a long time, no skimping on the delicious capers either. Chicken was tender and nice portion size. There was NO room for dessert, but we all left wanting to come back for other items each of us debated getting. The service was impeccable & warm. The co-owner was on premise walking the floor greeting everyone which was a nice touch and he helped make us feel welcomed & important. The ONLY thing I did not like was the noise level, which made it difficult to hear conversation. Pizza was delicious, very thin and crispy just like we like it. Of course I had the chicken francese again, which was fabulous again and an entire portion to take home. I was surprised I could actually taste the saffron in this since there are more robust flavors going on here with the chili oil but I appreciated it! Focaccia: comes out looking like a popover but has that classic focaccia texture. Tomato tapenade is a must with this. Very good, but if you are picking one veg app go for the arancini. Cacio e Pepe: some of the best I've had in DC. Creamy, cheesy sauce cut with the perfect bite of black pepper that is obviously high quality and fresh. The pasta itself is perfectly chewy and it's all just glorious with a glass of the Sauvignon Blanc. Linguine al frutte di mare: seafood heaven. Not very spicy at all -- just enough for the enjoyment of it. Plenty of seafood and none of it was overdone. Flavorful sauce and once again perfectly cooked pasta. Hubby devoured but did note that he didn't get shrimp and scallops just crab and squid. Not that it was bad, just that's what he got and he would have liked the shrimp and scallops for balance. A note about the Vanilla soufflé: we wanted it but it takes 20 min to make and we didn't know so we didn't get it -- next time I come I'm getting it and ordering it with my meal. Just something to keep in mind. Pannetone bread pudding: love the concept and the execution. Pannetone makes a great base for bread pudding. Beautiful decor -- very classy and modern.
