Historically, WHS : A Great school in a Great community!…read more If there is any ring of truth to some of the criticisms on here on Yelp about WHS, hopefully the appropriate people in the appropriate positions of authority will investigate and remedy - or else, be replaced. It can't be easy being a teacher or administrator in these modern, challenging times, given all the horror stories of present day teens, and their lack of home 'schooling' /up-bringing / discipline/ child-rearing; nonetheless, if there is a community of folks who can perform a better job than most high schools in this nation, Walnut is such a community! What a great high school, though... in a terrific little city outside LA, within the San Gabriel Valley (with one of the lowest crime rates) - one of the top ranked public school districts in Southern California ("Best School Districts For Your Buck in Southern California"; see https://www.nerdwallet.com/blog/cities/best-school-districts-southern-california-2015/). Surrounded by and populated with "[q]uality housing" consisting of nice, clean homes part of a master-planned single family housing community, and a median household income at one of the top-earning percentiles in the country at $101,250 according to available Census data, WHS is almost somewhat idyllic WHS is significant part of Primary Education in Walnut, which is served by the prestigious Walnut Valley Unified School District (WVUSD), which, in turn, has been ranked by numerous sources to be one of the top public school districts in all of Southern California. In addition to Walnut and WHS, WVUSD also serves parts of the city of Diamond Bar. Schools located in and around Walnut include: C.J. Morris Elementary School Collegewood Elementary School Oswalt Academy (Formerly known as Oswalt Elementary School) (Rowland Unified School District) Vejar Elementary School Walnut Elementary School Westhoff Elementary School Suzanne Middle School Southlands Christian Schools South Pointe Middle School[46] Chaparral Middle School Ronald Hockwalt Academies (Formerly known as Del Paso High School)[47] Walnut High School Diamond Bar High School Portions of the western side of Walnut are also served by the Rowland Unified School District. The proof is in the puddin (as the saying goes); Graduates from WHS have gone on to continue their educations at the top levels of world recognized/ nationally ranked colleges and universities, and enjoyed careers across the spectrum of professions and occupations. Students (and their parents) should be grateful (and proud as well) of being part of the Mustang family!

Ms Linda from the being made me feel comfortable when I told her my daughter was shy and I was worried. She assured me that all kids are the same and we would see her fit right in. She was right. I'm sure there wasn't always a website and these questions I have are simple and happen around the same time every year. Again I came in two years ago to ask her response was the same. She creates a warm and welcoming environment where my girls feel safe and supported. One thing we especially appreciate is her excellent communication with us. Ms. Ana is very responsive through WeChat; she provides us peace of mind when we have any questions regarding our kids. Ms Shiela was excellent in introducing both my daughters to writing/math/reading at the beginning of the year. She was able to identify different needs for each of my daughters and created a plan for us to follow at home to reinforce what was being taught at school. The time I had with Ms Shiela in the teacher parent meetings showed me that she really cared about her students and treated them as if they were her own. I am so impressed with my daughters' growth throughout the year; seeing the work they did in class and also the activities they have and are doing now at home is just amazing. We are so grateful to have had Ms. Ana and Ms. Shiela take care of and teach our kids. Ms Ana and Ms Shiela's kindness, patience, and dedication are qualities that every parent hopes to encounter on the first day of school.

Ms. Haley is the teacher who helped my daughter achieve a breakthrough in learning her letter sounds and number fundamentals. She is energetic, creative, and makes learning so much fun that even my husband and I wish we could be students in her class! She has a special gift for challenging each child while supporting them in their own unique way. Homework became a positive part of our routine because she always made sure my daughter was learning, growing, and being appropriately challenged. Her curriculum and classroom activities are engaging, thoughtful, and fun. Simply put, she is truly one of the best teachers we have ever met. Ms. Emily is the most patient and loving teacher. She has such a gentle and effective way of teaching discipline, manners, and positive behavior. Rather than simply telling children what not to do, she helps them understand right from wrong in a caring and respectful way. Her kindness and creativity shine through in everything she does. Ms. Andrea has left a lasting impression on our family. Thanks to her, our household will forever know how to sing the table manners song! She has a wonderful ability to turn lessons and nursery rhymes into daily habits that children can carry with them beyond the classroom. Together, these teachers create the perfect balance of nurturing, encouragement, structure, and learning. They have built an environment where children can thrive and grow at their own pace while feeling loved and supported every step of the way. We will miss them so much and already look forward to our second child having the opportunity to learn from them one day. We also cannot forget Room 2 and the amazing Ms. Cecilia, Ms. Ellie, and Ms. Griselda. They were my daughter's very first teachers and helped her learn boundaries, social skills, and independence while showering her with love and care. Anyone who works with two-year-olds deserves special recognition, and these teachers have endless patience and dedication. They are simply the best. We also cannot forget about Ms Reyna! She was the one providing comfort to during her first few weeks of transitioning. Our daughter has truly thrived here and has learned so much. We are incredibly grateful for all of these wonderful teachers and the impact they have had on our family. You simply can't go wrong with any of them!

The more time I have spent at my current daycare, I realize how sad I feel when I reflect back on when he was going here. This daycare is not nearly as warm as the daycare where my son spent his last 2 years. I remember when we first dropped off my son at this daycare, he was so scared and would cry a lot from the anxiety of leaving his parents. One of the suggestions that Ms. Toni said was not to carry him into the daycare and let him walk in. I'm not sure if this advise was to maybe make him less scared, but when I think back on that advise and how small my son was back then, it really makes me mad to even think that I took that advise as helpful. At 2 years old, a parent should definitely not feel like they can't carry their scared son into their first daycare. I also remember Ms. Toni commented that my son was constantly wanting to sit on Ms. Kat's lap and that she couldn't have him do that so often. When I see the kids in my current daycare, kids are on the laps of the teachers all the time and all day, especially if they need some comfort since they are showing anxiety being away from their parents. This school was so callous compared to the school that my son is currently at and I remember how scared he always felt when going there, which makes me sad and the reason why I'm writing a 2nd review. I also mentioned in an earlier review that I hated dropping off my son in the morning due to one of the teachers (Ms. Wafaa). She was always so rude to me, which made me worry about my son having to spend the morning with her. I hope she's no longer there, but if she is, she really needs to improve her demeanor. It's always hard to know how bad someplace is until you leave and go someplace else, so I'm glad we only stayed here for one year.

I will say I have had my complaints about and with the school, but now with "head of school" gone I feel comfortable sending my child back next year. The previous "head of school" (Mr. Emmanuel Lacoste) seemed like a dictator and I was unsure about sending my daughter there next year. However, he recently abruptly resigned and I have noticed the administration moving towards positive change. The majority of the staff are very nice and always saying hello. I have had my complaints with the school regarding communication which have been addressed appropriately. The school now has provided better communication and they seem more willing to hear concerns. Previously I emailed the head of school and never received a response. I called many times and spoke to the head of school one time and asked to meet with him. He assured me I could walk into his office anytime. The next day I went to try to meet with him, and he was unable to meet with me. I believe the school is headed in a positive direction and I plan to send both of my daughters there in the future. To those reading these reviews... there are evident fake reviews by people who find it necessary to make fake accounts and try to hide behind a negative review. I'd urge you to ask a parent about their experience rather than just read a review from someone who may be a previous parent or ex employee.

I am very disappointed with the Pre-K Program headed by Martha Macias…read more I am giving a warning to the parents that are looking to enroll their toddlers into the Pre-K program. Do your research and refer to the parents' experience before doing so. The way Macias is running the Pre-K program may affect your kids negatively. Don't do it unless the school decides to change its Pre-School Director. My kid was doing really great with Mrs. Lisa (Monalisa Cabrera). If there's someone good that remains in the Pre-K program, that's Mrs. Lisa. My wife and I have nothing but praises towards Mrs. Lisa. She's done a tremendous job taking care of our son and other kids as well. Few months after my kid transitioned to Ms. Thompson alongside Mrs. Macias. My kid developed an aggressive behavior something that we've never seen him had before. On March 4, 2026, Mrs. Macias informed us at "the classroom entrance" that our son was no longer allowed to attend the school due to behavioral concerns. The conversation with my wife was conducted "outside of her office, in front of other parents, kids and staff. "VERY UNPROFESSIONAL" and she's considered as the Pre-K Director. This is very concerning and scary at the same time. We feel it would have been more appropriate to discuss this privately rather than at the classroom where others could overhear. I guess our privacy and confidentiality is not of her concern. My wife had only just entered the classroom when she began speaking, and even my mother-in law, who was there to pick up my son, was standing outside. The conversation was very one-sided, and we weren't given an opportunity to share our perspective. We were simply told that "your son can no longer come here." Straight up rejection from Mrs. Macias. It was upsetting to see our young son face the reality of being rejected and asked to leave a place where he was beginning to build relationships with classmates and teachers. We believe this was a difficult situation for him to understand at such a tender age. As a 20 year Airforce and Navy veteran, if I deploy, I want nothing but the security and safety of the love ones I leave behind while fighting for this country. It's very disappointing that a supposedly "Christian" school that should provide security and peace of mind when I leave my kid in their custody wasn't able to accomplish such an important task. After this experience, I will never ever be at peace leaving my kid on any school regardless of whether it's a Christian school or not. I have a lot of colleagues - Military and Christians - and I am not advising them to enroll their kids into South Hills' Pre-K program under Mrs. Macias. As of this moment, until changes are done with the Pre-K Program, enrolling your kid is not recommendable.

Attending a Catholic school in the 1970's was far different from today and I wish students today could experience the more creative, humanistic approach that was at PC in those days. Of course they were strict about certain things like the length of your skirt, but in the 1970's it was common to have class discussions about controversial topics. My Modern World Religions teacher was Ms. Bolle and she brought in a Christian pastor and someone from the Hare Khrishna sect and they debated and it was very eye-opening. My Freshman reading teacher was Ms. Angel Curtiss who was on loan to us from the public schools (I guess you could do that in those days) In one semester I read two Studs Terkel books (Working and Division Street America), Johnny Got His Gun and the Autobiography of Malcolm X. That class had the most impact on my life. Unfortunately, a few years back I tried to contact Ms. Curtiss to let her know the impact she had on my life but she had been killed in a car accident somewhere in the southern US along with her daughter a few years prior. Students, don't wait too long to let your teachers know how much you appreciate them. In my regular English classes we read many classics. I had Mrs. Morrison for many of my English courses. Ms. Stith was my freshman English teacher and we learned how to write a research paper which at the time was very difficult for me. I didn't do well in her class, however I would like her to know that what I learned about research in her class helped me in college later on. I had a great government teacher, Mrs. Kennedy. My freshman Social and Moral Guidance teacher, Rory Devine, later become a reporter for one of the networks in Los Angeles. Math and Science had the weakest teachers. Back in the day we only had to take pre algebra and geometry to graduate. I do think we were sort of tracked since no one ever mentioned college to me. However, I attended community college and some years later a four year college. We had Driver's Ed in the 10th grade. Mrs Phillips, one of the PE teachers taught the classroom part where we saw scary films like "Red Asphalt." That made me a safe driver. I also always remember her telling us to "leave yourself an out. Don't get blocked in on the freeway." Our behind the wheel instructor was a former marine with a buzz cut, gray suit and sunglasses who never smiled. There were two wheels in the car and he had control of one. Parallel parking was the hardest. The Tuttles were a married couple who everyone loved and I know Mr. Tuttle taught history, drama and consumer economics. I can't remember what Mrs. Tuttle taught. I remember he was trying to organize us to do a play but all of us girls were fighting so he made us sit down, gave us a talking to and had us listen to a Paul Mc Cartney and Wings song, "With a Little Luck." They later moved on to teach public school in I think Temecula. Every year we had this group come in and they set up big screens and played Styx songs. The videos were about values and doing the right thing. When we had mass at PC, they played modern type music. I appreciated that PC was a safe environment. The drug culture was in full swing so there were a lot of programs aimed at curtailing drug use due to American kids dying from tainted drugs. We also had a short program on becoming an emancipated minor. It was the 70's, what can I say. Some students also published an underground newspaper. I still have a copy somewhere. The student writers renamed the school "Prison Camp" and bitterly complained about the ugly uniforms! I wish kids today could get some of the education and experiences we got in that era. Things today are too censored and curriculum is watered down. Teachers don't have the same control of curriculum that they had in past eras. I wouldn't trade my 70's education for anything. Maybe a little project could be for today's PC kids to go back into the old yearbooks and do a compare and contrast evaluation of education.
