Outside of the area most tourists in Quebec City will discover, Griendel was very near my airbnb which - I believe - was in Saint-Sauveur. There's a few blocks of cafes and shops in this neighborhood and I discovered them days before realizing that Saint-Roch, with its onslaught of cafes and shops, was down the same road only a short walk away. Regardless, this seemed like a place the hip young locals love and I could get behind what they were offering. A wide array of craft beer was offered and though I'm generally not much of a beer fan, I really got into the one I chose: Blanche au Citron Meyer et aux Poivres (aka #Patelle, 4.8% alcohol). I don't know French but correctly deduced that this beer contained Meyer Lemon and on a humid, hot afternoon that was enough to sell me. IPAs also received high marks. Come for the beer but if you stay for the food I doubt it'll disappoint.

The staff were very nice as they found us a table and took our drink order. A few minutes in, we realized our kid was going to be fussy. Not wanting to bother the table next to us, we asked if we could move to an area with more space. The staff were happy to accommodate and moved us and our drinks to another part of the restaurant. But my kid still wasn't able to calm down so I decided to take him out of the restaurant and left my wife at the table. After calming him down outside the restaurant, I called my wife and we decided to take our food to go instead. But since we were sat down at the new table, no one came to actually take our order. Since we weren't being served, and I actually didn't even try a sip of the beer I ordered, and since my wife only ordered a can of soda, we felt like it would be ok to just leave. Again, we barely ordered anything and I didnt even try the beer I ordered because I had to take my kid outside. As we are getting my kid back into the stroller in front of the restaurant, the waitress comes out and says her boss is making her ask why we didn't pay for our drinks. I explained that it wasn't working out with our kid, we didn't want to bother the other guest during their dinner, and we didn't actually touch what we ordered, so we thought it would be ok to just leave. Clearly we weren't trying to skip out on the bill and there were reasonable circumstances for us to leave. She goes back in to clear it with her manager who then asks us to come back in and pay for the drinks we didn't enjoy. Although I understand we ordered the drinks, and they couldn't put the beer back in the keg, it seems like any friendly restaurant would have just waived off the $13 since we weren't being served clearly struggling with our kid. It also seems like we did the polite thing by leaving and not letting our kid bother people. And we would have instead ordered a full meal to go but they weren't even serving us anyway. To me this shows the restaurant management has no idea about customer service. I hope they enjoy the $13 I paid for nothing. Hopefully that goes to the staff who were at least friendly.

When it gets a little busier at certain times, the servers may be a little sparse, but the nonexistent wait time once you make your order and the cheery attitudes make up for it entirely. As for the food itself, the savory buckwheat crepes are fantastic. I tried La Béarn which has goat cheese and duck confit. So so splendid. As well as the eggs benedict with smoked salmon. My mouth was in heaven. Their cider selection is superb. I also enjoyed their home made ice cream. I had a coffee on the second day which wasn't so great, but overall an extraordinary experience!

My boyfriend literally said, "if I wanted to eat a burnt burger from Costco, I could have done it at home". The people next to us had the ribs and the salmon tartar - the ribs were also probably ordered in from a wholesaler (they looked so dry and sticky) and the tartar plate was measly for the price charged.
