Loved having lunch at this nice new addition to the Frederick restaurant scene. My companion and I both had the salmon bento box which was perfect size for a serving that was filling without overwhelming. Previous reviewers have done a good job but I want to add that the dessert alone was worth the walk up those steep steps. We had mochi, which was six ice cream balls in three favors: green tea, mango and either red beet or red bean (!). This was my first taste and I loved them..it was a nice finish for two ladies to share. Loved sitting by the big windows even on this historic frigid day. Service very good. read more

Wow. What a disappointment. Two friends and I were excited to see a new sushi joint in this cozy, intimate location - we had dined frequently at the 2 other restaurants that were previously here. Unfortunately, location is the only thing that Lazy Fish has going for it. We made a rez for7 pm, and were promptly seated and greeted by our server. We decided to go with some appetizers and lot's of sushi. The apps arrived quickly and were the highlight of the meal. One of my friends had the Miso soup, another had a cold seafood salad, and I opted for the coconut shrimp. All were delish - especially the coconut shrimp - a generous portion of shrimp cooked to perfection and served with a little cabbage salad with a tangy dressing. The problems arose when it came to the sushi. We ordered the Nigiri platter - $27 for 12 pieces - a bit pricey compared to other downtown sushi restaurants, but we thought if the quality was going to be good, that we didn't mind paying. The sushi arrived on an unceremonious platter, with little thought given to aesthetics. The sushi rice was bad - terrible. Normally, a soft, unctuous little pillow of love, this rice was overcooked and hard and would not stay together/ The choice of fish was also very uninspired, and quite frankly not very fresh. Usually when I have sushi, there is something on the plate that jumps out and makes me say, "Hell yeah". That did not happen here. Nothing special, slightly unfresh and just not very good. So not being satisfied, one of my friends and I each ordered a spicy tuna roll - again hard rice and not very fresh fish. We actually sent this one back. My other friend ordered quail egg and roe, and it too was low quality. All in all, not a very good sushi experience. Pricier then other sushi places downtown, and no where near the delightfulness of Honode's sushi. We ended up going to another restaurant (Pistarro - ALWAYS a hit) to get something else to eat. I cant, in good faith, recommend Lazy Fish to anyone. read more

UPDATE!! Immediately after writing this review I received a message from the sushi chef at Lazy Fish explaining that they no longer have the comedians upstairs due to the noise and profanity. He apologized and invited us back for a second chance. I was very impressed that he responded and tried to amend the situation so quickly. Again, the food and service was good, it is a cute little place with a great downtown location and I will plan on trying them again. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CHILDREN HERE. I have mixed feeelings about this place. The sushi was good, not great, but good. Same with the service. The real problem is their comedy club upstairs. My husband and I went for our weekly date night, the third floor is open like a loft to the second floor where the restaurant is located. The club upstairs was so loud that we couldn't carry on a conversation as we couldn't hear each other across our small table. There were several comedians that night and they all had two things in common, they had very foul mouths and they just weren't funny at all. The F bomb was rampant and although this would not offend me in a bar atmosphere, this was a family restaurant and if I had children there, I would have walked out, it was truly that bad. read more

We stopped by for a late lunch, and I'm so glad we did! I absolutely love the environment; we were the only people there at first so we were seated by the windows looking down on Patrick Street. The dining room is absolutely beautiful. We ordered sushi: the Shark Tank, the Hawaiian roll, and the Baltimore roll. All three were delicious...the Hawaiian roll was a definite favorite. Not going to lie- I was disappointed by the sushi here. The venue is amazing- located right above shops and restaurants in downtown Frederick so you have a great view of one of the bustling side streets of downtown. The service was also great- my waiter was very nice and the other staff seemed pleasant enough. The sushi, though... well it's not something I'd recommend in Frederick. First of all, the portions are quite small for the price. I ordered a small roll (salmon and avocado) as well as a special item (tavern roll). Each order came with 8 pieces of sushi but the rolls were quite small- after eating both orders I was still quite hungry, and although dinner is my favorite meal of the day, I wouldn't say my appetite is huge. Maybe I'm just used to larger sushi portions back home, but I was disappointed by the quantity here for what I was paying. The sushi itself was also nothing to write home about. The seaweed around the rolls is a strange texture- harder than I'm used to and bit chewy, which is something that's hard not to notice. Also, apart from the sauce, the tavern roll was not very flavorful. I prefer places that rely upon the flavor of the fish shining through. Instead of complimenting the fish, the sauce and additions masked it and overwhelmed the overall flavor of the roll. The one thing I did appreciate was seeing the sesame seeds in the sushi rice, which added great flavor and texture. I don't think it's the best sign if the sushi rice was my favorite thing, however. So, all in all, great location but not my favorite sushi. read more

Had Lazy Fish for the first time last night. Atmosphere was very laid back. Not too loud, not awkwardly quiet as well. We were greeted right away by who I believe to be the owner behind the sushi bar and then immediately seated. Our server Kelly was prompt, really knew the menu, and she was extremely friendly as well as personable. She walked us through the menu and even came back to further explained a menu item she had mentioned to us. The service was fast. We got the tuna poppers for appetizer and they were so amazing. The Firecracker Roll and the Baltimore Roll were the dinner choice and they were equally amazing. Nice portion sizes and all tasted very fresh. Let me start by saying I'm a sushi snob. I LOVE sushi and eat it one or more times a week usually. My husband and me stopped by Lazy Fish for a late snack and a drink, so I can't comment on a dinner experience. This restaurant is where Quinn's Attic use to be (above Summitra). I love the decor and the chef is right behind the sushi counter and very approachable. You can eat at the sushi bar or at a table or booth. We picked a booth that overlooked Patrick Street. My husband had Saki and I had their plum wine. He liked his saki and I loved the wine. We had edamame and he had a tuna roll and I tried a Chef Special roll called the Shark Tank. My roll was basically a take on a spicy tuna roll and was excellent. They have a lot of unique type of rolls to try. The sushi prices are a bit higher than I've seen at other sushi restaurants, but the fish is very fresh. I definitely want to go back for a dinner sometime. Was it the best sushi I've ever had? No, but it's right up there next to my top one or two easily and I need to give it another visit to taste more of the menu. read more

Found this place here on yelp. We got in with no reservation which is a plus. The first thing we noticed was the noise in the restaurant was soooooo loud! We had to yell to each other to have a conversation. The menu is large, maybe too much. The food case quickly and the appetizers were good. The entres were also good. The 4$ side sushi rice was old, hard and cold. Horrible. The ginger was also old and dried out. Not good. The sushi was fresh, however and good. At the end we had 1 drink each (3 of us) 3 apps, 2 miso soups, and 2 mains. 135$. So so expensive for what we ate. I don't think we will return. read more

Upstairs sushi! This place is on the second floor of a building on Patrick Street, and has a Richmond vibe- wooden booths, small tables, great service. I had two sushi rolls, which were large and tasty, but a little oversauced for me. however, my husband had the bulgogi bowl, and said it was AMAZING. I really like that their menu isn't all sushi- having bento bowls, noodle bowls and other dishes means I can come here even with folks who don't do raw fish. I was very impressed by the salmon tartare special. It was cajun salmon with a wasabi sauce on it on top of a shrimp chip. I thought the cajun aspect sounded a little goofy (I'm a sushi purist) but at 12 dollars, why not. The cajun seasoning is mild and not overbearing at all and the fish was quite refreshing. The seaweed salad "side" was an generous portion. The weakest portion of our meal were the regular rolls we had (a spicy tuna and a eel avocado); average and a tad overpriced however the presentation was nice. I am not too keen on sushi with too much sauce on it which a lot of the special rolls are, but their regular rolls are not half bad. read more

My current favorites: tuna tartare, yellowtail jalapeno, Salmon Aburi, Tuna Tataki, Tuna Poppers, Wasabi Tuna (nigiri) - I realize none but the last is traditional, but man are these awesome! The miso is really good as well. LF also has non-fish based selections. Our favorites: chicken teriyaki, braised pork belly, baby back ribs, and the asian wings. This was our first time at Lazy Fish, and it was mostly a wonderful experience. I had read the reviews here on Yelp, and decided to try the braised pork belly appetizer. Well, in my case, the piece of pork I was served was very dry, and tasted like a hard piece of beef. I think it was overcooked. The flavors of the dish were wonderful, however, and I loved the red cabbage slaw and pineapple with the tasty sauce underneath the meat. I ordered the grilled asparagus, and it was okay, but I expected it to be more moist. It did taste like it had been grilled on an actual grill, so that was good, but I probably won't order the asparagus or the pork belly again because they were both too dry. My favorite dish that I ordered was the coconut shrimp appetizer. It was the bomb! I will definitely order it the next time I am at Lazy Fish. It had the right amount of heat for me, which is to say, just a bit of spice. It also included some wonderful crispy kale chips and the asian slaw underneath the coconut shrimp was incredible! I will be craving more of this dish, so I know I will be back for more. I also shared a wonderful warm chocolate cake that was accompanied by fresh strawberries, whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, and chocolate sauce. It was the best chocolate cake I think I've ever eaten. My daughter agreed. She was the one who suggested a sushi restaurant, because she loves sushi, and she was very happy with the Lazy Rainbow - an assortment of sushi. My husband ordered the Pacific Salmon, and was happy with that, except that he felt there was a tad too much pepper. I will order the Pacific Salmon for myself the next time we go, and the salmon was delicious. I am glad we went tonight. It was terrific, and we will return. read more
