Golden Dragon; Hello Yellow; Trout Roe; Sweet Potato Tempura

I know, I know, I only gave it a 4, BUT we eat here all the time. This is the best sushi in Frederick by a long shot. This is probably the best sushi within a 40 minute drive. Do not write this place off over the 4. Now, the decor was redone in the last few years and I like it a lot; there's an explosion of pink "cherry blossoms" in the middle of the main dining level and the lights are always kept low. It is cozy inside, and it's always busy, so if you really want to eat here, you should make a reservation. Service is good, always friendly and attentive. The prices are pretty fair. I have paid a lot more for sushi that was a lot worse. We're pretty heavy orderers of the special rolls here, so I'm less familiar with their nigiri, entrees, or basic rolls, but some standouts that we keep coming back to are the Hello Yellow, Silly Sally, and the Keys. The fish is flavorful and fresh, if not the best I've ever encountered, and the rotating specials and appetizers are usually worth a try as well. They have never let me down.

Lazy Shack

The Lazy Shack roll is a comforting, flavorful bite that hits all the right notes. Crispy shrimp tempura pairs perfectly with creamy avocado and rich crab topping, while masago adds a pop of texture and scallions keep it fresh. A light drizzle of teriyaki brings everything together with just the right touch of sweetness. Paired with plum wine, the roll feels balanced and indulgent without being heavy--a smooth, satisfying choice.

The best but also creative sushi menu. A great Ambience as well. Will definitely be back!!

The Keys & Shrimp Tempura Roll

Decor - 5/5 Service - 4/5 Food - 3/5 We ordered the hot sake, Asian Wings, Truffle Hamachi, The Keys roll, and Shrimp Tempura roll. Everything was ok, a tad heavy-handed with the sauces, nothing tasted worthy of a repeat. The truffle hamachi was cut way too thick and The Keys roll flavor combo not jiving well at all (so much so that hubs couldn't stomach it and just spit it out)

Absolutely amazing little place! Fantastic dining option hidden in an alleyway in downtown Frederick. We went to Frederick for my birthday, and a coworker who lives nearby had recommended Lazy Fish to me. She nailed that recommendation. We will start with finding this place. Yelp said it was very nearby, but I didn't spot it right away. You are looking for an awning with the logo - it's in an alley. The food options here were perfect - a little of everything you'd expect in a sushi restaurant. We had a vegetarian assortment, which had the best avocado rolls either of us had ever tasted. It was actually kind of odd how good they were. I had a roll that contained pork belly, hoisin, sriracha, pineapple, and cucumber. This was quite delectable. The pork belly was cooked perfectly and the sauces elevated the salty pork products to a new level. The pineapple and cucumber added a crunch and some sweetness to the roll, balancing the flavors well. I also had some rare tuna crusted with black pepper and sesame seeds. The tuna basically melted on my mouth. Staff were friendly and attentive. Note that this one of those places that closes for a few hours between lunch and dinner, which are almost always better places to eat...and that shows here for sure.

The vibe and decor of this restaurant was great! We enjoyed our food and the server was friendly. I feel like the basic/simple rolls (I.e. salmon or tuna) were a bit more expensive than I'd go for but I enjoyed the creativity of the rolls I had. I do feel as if there was some flavor lacking in the creamy crab on the lazy shack roll but otherwise I'd recommend this spot!

Calamari and Salmon Tartare appetizers

This is a decent sushi spot in Frederick. I'd say the sushi was pretty good and fresh, but not the best I've had. Somewhat limited in the rolls they have. For appetizers, we had the Calamari and the Salmon Tatare. Both were very good. For dinner, I had the Lazy Rainbow, a Salmon Avocado roll, and some Salmon rolls. All were pretty good, but nothing out of the ordinary. Our party also shared a Baltimore roll and that was ok. Someone else in our party got the Lazy Spaghetti. That was an interesting dish, especially at a sushi restaurant, that had a Thai/curry twist to it. Pretty good and pretty unique. Overall, a good meal here with decent to average sushi rolls.

Takeout

Ordered takeout- crunchy spicy scallop roll, salmon roll, orioles roll, and shark tank Both specialty rolls were a stand out. Especially the shark tank roll. The seared pepper tuna on top was delicious. Fish was all very fresh. I would come back here

We went here after a recital at the Weinberg Saturday night. It was such a beautiful night overall and it wasn't just the delicious sushi (and my son got steak), but the service and kindness of the staff and I'm pretty sure the owner made it perfect. My daughter received an award that we were looking at and they wanted to see it too and we're just amazing to us. Great celebration restaurant.

I went with my wife and this place was amazing! The service was amazing and the food was very delicious! It was so open and lively and it was a true diamond in the haystack! Me and my wife would definitely come back any day any time! Highly recommend to anyone!!!

Very cute little sushi restaurant tucked into the heart of downtown Frederick. I feel like if you didn't know it was here, you would never go! It's located on the second/third floor of a downtown building, and the entrance is a ramp followed by an interior set of stairs. There is no restaurant window glowing brightly to attract you inside as you watch diners consuming delicious sushi, so, you just have to know! I've only been there two times, but both times, we had large parties and made reservations. Reservations are limited to 2 hours because the space is actually quite small, and well, they are quite popular. Expect to wait on a weekend or even any evening they are open! I almost feel like if you don't know about it, you won't know about it until you find it on Yelp or someone tells you. So, go, already! They have an extensive menu for all palates- so just because someone doesn't like sushi, that doesn't mean they will be unhappy here. In fact, you can find food that is not sushi that is filling - they have a bunch of noodle dishes and protein centered options, as well as fun appetizers like tempura, edamame, wings and dumplings. It's quite an impressive menu that had me very happy, as it did for everyone else. I am a sushi fan of the vegetable variety, so I was very glad that they had a vegetable assortment that I could order. It was a good amount, but, I am a hungry diner, so I added more to it to make my belly happy. I suppose next time I could just go with an appetizer, but I prefer sushi! The rest of the parties also enjoyed their sushi, noodles, bento boxes and protein-centered dishes. Everyone was happy. They have happy hour specials, too, if you dine on the earlier side. The food Is fresh and comes out quickly, relatively speaking. The staff are very helpful and knowledgeable. They also have Tamara for those folks avoiding soy sauce/ gluten. All in all, I would be back here anytime someone suggests it! I will try to suggest it and convince more to join me! So good!

Been coming here many times over the past years and we really liked the service of this restaurant. All the servers we had were friendly and considerate. You will run into a long wait line along the stairs if you come after they open, especially on the weekends, which we encountered several times and learned the hard way Therefore arrive at when they open is highly recommend. The sushi and sashimi are always fresh and tasty. I also like the new dishes they push out at times, not very frequent but does happen. However, bentos can taste a bit off mainly referring to the sauce they put on top of the protein, and like to recommend making some adjustments to it. It can ruin the entire taste of the bento. Price is on the slightly high side especially given its location, but comparable to some Other sushi restaurant. It's mainly street parkings since in old town, Frederick, and most of the times is difficult to find parking during dinner time or on the weekends. There is a ramp lead into the building & an elevator inside the building to take you up to the second floor. So it is wheelchair accessible. Overall... do recommend! By IG @WineDinenVacay

seating area

The service was good, as our waitress was polite, attentive, and quick. The entire restaurant kinda smelled really bad...plus the tables and menus had that gross sticky residue. The dining area is extremely small, which is fine, but as more people started rolling in and chairs moved around to be added onto tables, it became kind of a hazard to walk. The food was okay. We got the roll with crispy toppings (crunchy spicy scallop roll) and it was by far the standout. I may order takeout but the smell and ambience made dining in not super great.

SU ordered Kung Pao Shrimp, her "go-to" and every Asian restaurant, and compares each one to China Garden's version. Her verdict: Modern Asia's was "OK", and she told me I could eat the leftovers for my lunch. I did. My verdict was the same: OK, but nothing to write home to Mother about. (My comparison, BTW, is to a restaurant we enjoyed in Ithaca New York that made Kung Pao with peppers that would flay your face from the inside if you dared to eat one. Modern Asia's didn't even tickle, making it a let down). I ordered Seafood Combination Chinese Yellow Curry, a new dish for me. It was yummy. Described as one-pepper spicy on the menu, it had less heat than the Kung Pao, but the curry sauce had layers of flavor. It featured shrimp, scallops, and calmari plus a wonderful mix of peppers, onions, and other veg. All were nicely (crisply) cooked, even taking into account the Door Dash delivery time. I really enjoyed it. Next time I may ask for a bit more heat, but as it is, I hoovered up every morsel. Try it - you'll like it!

One of the staffs came to us and asked if we were ever served yet after like 10 minutes of receiving our menus. It took them a while to refill my water; I had to ask for a refill. Food came out fairly quickly. 5.5/10 Food Presentation: Everything we had was presented very beautifully. 10/10 Food Taste: *Dumpling Soup - Pretty good. Tasted homemade. 8/10 *Trio Tempura - Bland, but the tempura dipping sauce was good. I like the fried parts, nice and crunchy. 5/10 *Squid Leg Karaage - Pretty good too. Again, I like the fried part, and the squid was tender and soft. The sauce was good too. I just wished the squid had more flavor. 7/10 *Ube Fries - Very bland, but the fried part is good. Texture was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. 6/10 *Hokkaido Scallop Ceviche - Had a very pungent fish sauce smell, but the taste of everything together was alright. I like the pickled onions. There just wasn't a "wow" factor to this dish. 6/10 *Chor Muang - Strong peanut smell, texture of the dough is like mochi. Taste was very underwhelming. For such a beautifully presented dish, it was lacking so much flavor. 3/10 *Lemon Drop Martini and Mango Sticky Rice Cocktail - Sweet but very strong. 5.7/10 Ambience: This place is so aesthetically pleasing, the lights, flower decor, and colors were so beautiful!! 10/10 I honestly wouldn't come here again. Yes, the decor is beautiful and food presentation is gorgeous, but the food was very mediocre. However, this place was on my list to try, and I'm very glad I was able to eat here.
