I was in the area and saw Lazar's and just had to get some chocolate. The store has a good selection of different hand made chocolates. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I ordered some orange peel and marzipan both dark chocolate covered. The candy was really good and was exceptional. Only problem was that the price is very high 32.50 a pound is outrageous in cost. Most of the places around my area charge anywhere from 18-22. Definitely worth a trip especially if cost is not a factor. read more

Chocolate and candy are among the most important things in my life. Being honest, they are right up there with my family and friends in terms of how happy these things make me. Above both by far in terms of how comfortable I feel in their presence. Is that a problem? I don't know, I'm not a doctor. So, when I opened the door to Lazar's for the first time last week I was like young Charlie Bucket the first time he saw Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. I'd never been left alone in a chocolate store like this, so I needed everything. And everything I did get, without any other terrible fictitious brats to get in my way. I was maybe too unrestrained. I sort of longed for the child safety tether/leash thing my parents kept me on until age 10. But really, I don't miss that thing. The chocolate is unreal, just so homemade and fresh. The more traditional stuff is delicious, as are the more fun ones (think chocolate dipped oreos). Special shout out to their turtles and dark chocolate covered caramels...omagawd. Fortunately there are no oompa loompas at Lazar's behind the scenes, just a really cool family who is hand making all the delicious stuff that's there to eat. Unfortunately they didn't have the golden ticket program and I didn't win the store itself, but on the bright side, I walked out with a pretty sweet truckload of chocolate. Lazar's Chocolate is awesome. Seriously awesome. They have something for everyone here, even if you don't like chocolate they have other candy. My personal favs are the peanut butter cups (I'm a sucker for anything peanut butter) and the chocolate covered Oreos. Seriously their chocolate covered Oreos are the things dreams are made of, so good. My only complaint is that they close at 6pm. Ordered Fruit Slices (as in 'Boston Fruit Slices' candy). I'm giving one star for the shipping which was speedy. However, this 'mixed box' came almost entirely filled with 'lime' slices (least favorite of anyone I know) as well as jumbled up inside a flimsy box with a tiny piece of tape on one side that broke. Upon opening the box, the sugar flew everywhere and a fat crumpled piece of tissue was jammed into the corner (not on top or around the candy to protect it). Looks suspiciously repackaged. The fact that this place has sat right under my nose by where I work made me skeptical to try it. I figured it was just some stuffy candy shop with a dull artificial assortment. But wow, the chocolate really has a homemade touch to it, their caramels have earned them a rightful place near the top of my NY Chocolate crawl this summer. I ordered this online from the website at www.lazarschocolates.com and the only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars was I believed the shipping charges were a bit excessive. But then again what I got was darn worth it. Rich dark chocolate taste tells me this is at least 40-50% cacao for their dark chocolate novelties. If you want a chocolate orgasm, this place is it. Their chocolate is top tier and the absolute best. I don't bother to buy Godiva or the other brands in Roosevelt Field Mall and the like. Only recommendation for improvement is friendliness of customer service for minorities. There's a slight undertone of preferentialism for non minorities in the store in terms of degree of enthusiasm in greeting customers. Major improvement they made over the years is hiring a non white as a customer service employee behind the counter. She is Asian and I applaud Lazard's for recognizing the changing demographic of Great Neck in terms of the conspicuous increase of Asian Americans in the area. However, I would recommend that the business be aware of and make an effort in addition to adding race diverse personnel to its staff to be aware of customer sensitivities to how they greet customers - make non white customers feel like other customers who the store apparently knows on a first name basis so that non whites don't feel the slightest undertone of being treated like a second class citizen. Otherwise, their chocolate is the most delicious chocolate I've ever tasted and the people who I gift their chocolates to appreciate their chocolates as well as being an exquisite treat. Given that Godiva and other over-displayed brands in retail stores are way over priced, the price point for Lazard's chocolates are priced just below the rip off prices of their competitions but not by much and are still "somewhat" expensive. So in light of the above, I give Lazard's 4 stars. Great product but customer service could be friendlier and more enthusiastic to non whites and price is competitive but not by much. read more

I have lived in Great Neck for over 20 years and Lazar's chocolate is a convenient place to go for a nice gift. They have seasonally themed chocolates (for Hanukkah, for Xmas, for Easter or Passover) and also great birthday ideas. You can even bring them a picture and they print it on one of their chocolate bar wrappers, along with a personalized message. Also, they gift wrap your chocolate bars or chocolate gifts with pretty paper, appropriate for the occasion. My only complaint are the prices. Everything is very expensive so this is not the place to go if you are looking for an inexpensive gift. Other than that, service and quality are very good. read more

This chocolate store not only has chocolate that will make you sick, but the management is rude and unprofessional. When I came into the store, the owner was there with his newborn baby on the counter. When I asked him a question, he completely ignored me to tend to his baby. Then he changed the baby's diaper on the counter. This is disgusting and unsanitary. After finally getting the attention of a different worker, I got mixed chocolates. When the worker served my chocolate she used her bare hands to put the chocolate in the box, without even washing her hands or wearing gloves. One pound of chocolate is 32$, which is a complete ripoff for below average chocolate. There were chocolates sitting in boxes on the shelves that were clearly very old. There was a white film on the chocolates in the boxes from being so old. Between a rude, unsanitary owner, and overpriced, disgusting chocolate that made me sick, I would NEVER go back to this place and would never recommend it to anyone.
