When we reached the point of actual hip replacement surgery, this took place at Glendale Memorial, it was my first major surgery and I could not have had better care from the hospital staff. Twelve weeks later I can walk without pain; actually I could walk from the first week without assistance and without pain. When I saw the X-Rays this past week prior to my check-in with Dr Ahdoot, it was the first time I realized what the team had done. I have a four-inch (tidy) scar and that's it. These helped for a short time, although I was still physically strong, the pain persisted and continued to worsen. I had never had surgery before, so I was nervous and hesitant to go under the knife. I made simple lifestyle adjustments--limiting certain activities, using seat cushions, and modifying how I moved--but it wasn't enough. The final straw was when I was shopping with my daughter and was in excruciating pain just from walking. That's when I decided it was time. Dr. Ahdoot was quick to get me scheduled for surgery. He and his team helped me navigate insurance and guided me through all the steps needed to prepare. On the day of surgery, the DISC Center in Marina del Rey was phenomenal. They immediately helped put me at ease. Since this was my first surgery, I was very anxious. I had some difficulty fully waking up from anesthesia and developed nausea, but the nurses were wonderful--keeping me comfortable and helping me get moving. I was walking within hours after surgery (with a walker, of course). Within three days, I no longer needed the walker, and aside from mild surgical pain and some muscle stiffness, I already felt significantly better. I was hesitant and skeptical that I needed surgery, but after dealing with the pain for nearly three years, I am so glad I went through with it. Eight weeks after the surgery, my endurance is quickly improving, I am moving without pain and have no restrictions in movement. I had a minimally invasive total hip replacement using the anterior approach. For an additional cost, I opted for a prosthetic customized to my body structure. This allowed the surgeon to avoid cutting any ligaments or tendons, which is crucial for recovery and long-term stability. My incision is about three inches long and healing quickly. I am also a Type 1 diabetic, and we typically heal more slowly and can have more complications. I'm happy to say I am healing very well and have had no issues related to my diabetes. During surgery, I was even able to keep my insulin pump and CGM attached. The anesthesiologist monitored my blood sugar throughout the procedure, which allowed me to stay on my routine and maintain good control before, during, and after surgery. I highly recommend Dr. Ahdoot. He has a calm, steady temperament that immediately puts you at ease. He is confident in his skills, patient, and never made me feel pressured. Dr. Yuan graduated from Johns Hopkins University Medical School after an undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley. She did a residency at Cedars. Her educational background isn't to be questioned but it was her personal demeanor that impressed me. The appointment was so thorough, the questions so thoughtful, and the treatment of the patient so empathetic, that I knew we made a great decision to see her. We had a surgery scheduled elsewhere that was postponed within two weeks of the date of surgery. Dr. Yuan met within us three days of the postponement. It was out of network for our insurance coverage and all was set up through Melody, her office assistant who couldn't be nicer nor more communicative. No guesswork here, all explained. They will get through barriers of bureaucracy if possible. And they will find a way to help. Real compassion. The office itself is in a building with free parking, not an easy find in this area. Quick aside, the views of the mountains from the patient rooms are astounding. Alll the equipment and furniture is pristine and good luck finding any dust or lint. When going under the knife or arranging a surgery for a loved one, you need to have trust and faith in the surgeon and the journey from start to after care. Building that trust quickly to schedule a surgery is a hard ask. Yet, it developed over the time spent in the consolation and with the absolute professionalism throughout the booking experience and initial consultation. Dr. Yuan also provided pictures of successful surgeries she has completed. All the other doctors were booked out two weeks and had layers upon layers of bureaucracy, but Dr. Raffi's practice is "concierge" and made an appointment for me at the end of his day so I ran to Beverly Hills. His appointment cost was only 25 dollars more than my local doctors and I didn't have to wait. After several vocal tests and inspection, found I hadn't lost my voice but had a "lesion" on my vocal cord! He stuck all the cameras and the scopes all around my throat and through my nose and everything until I saw a freaking PICTURE of this thing in the screen. Soon we scheduled the surgery, and I am recovering as we speak (no pun intended). His staff is pretty cool and very accommodating, and Brandon, his scheduler is pretty cool and always dresses nice. The nurses are kind and prompt as well. I had a question once and tried to call outside operating hours and Dr. Raffi even called me on his personal cell phone promptly afterwards.
