Unfortunately, have to give this place a thumbs down based on customer service. I've visited Laurel's a number of times of the last few years, and it had become one of my favorites for buying gifts and flowers. Unfortunately, on my most recent visit, I felt the owner was quite rude. I was doing x-mas shopping for my mother, who cannot, due to health reasons, do her own shopping. As has become our tradition, I call her when I do her shopping and we talk about what I see and if she wants me to pick it up for her. On this occasion, I was on the phone with her and ready to purchase the items I had found. No-one was at the till, but I assumed they were busy working on arrangements so I waited without complaint. Some time later, a man came to the till and asked me if I was done my call. I was confused, and stated that I was not as I was on the phone with my mom. He then moved my items away from the register and stated that he would not ring in the purchase while I was on my phone, because "it is store policy and it's quite rude". I admit, at this point, I was still a bit confused. I hadn't been discussing anything inappropriate, nor do I think was I was being unreasonable. He then walked away while I stood at the till, still, to be honest, a bit shocked that someone would speak that condescendingly to a customer. There were perhaps two other employees standing behind the till, but I assume they felt uncomfortable contradicting the man, so they stood there somewhat awkwardly trying to look occupied. At this point I was feeling a bit like I was in bizarro world, in a somewhat laughable, albeit extremely uncomfortable, display of passive aggressive control/power struggle. It became clear by the actions taken that unless I hung up my phone, I would not be able to purchase the items. I then had the odd dilemma of purchasing the items my Mom and I had agreed upon, or walking out of the store without the items. Retrospectively I should have done the latter, but instead I ended my call, and then the man walked back to the till and rang in my purchase. He again felt the need to repeat himself, stating "it's store policy that we don't ring people in on the phone, as it's very rude." Now, I may not be the most up-to-date on etiquette, but what I do know is that I was enjoying x-mas shopping "with" my Mom, and then was spoken to and treated in a rude and condescending manner. It's one thing to have a personal opinion on whether or not people should be on their cell-phones while they buy something at a store; it's quite another to express that opinion in such a patronizing fashion. read more
