I am incredibly disappointed. For over $150, I expected a professionally designed roses arrangement like on their website, not a pile of grocery-store quality Chinese roses thrown into a vase. The stems weren't even cleaned of excess leaves, and there was no structure or design to the bouquet--just a messy bunch. It looked like it was assembled in five minutes by someone who doesn't care. When my father passed away we needed flowers for his memorial service. So, for the first time we actually visited the store. They did a wonderful job of providing us with options, trying to understand what we were looking for and then designing the arrangements. They delivered on time. I have nothing but good things to say about Flowers by Merle. During our wedding planning, we visited several other stores looking for a quote. We were looking for greenery with some small flowers inserted throughout for our head table and fire mantle. One flower store did not listen to what we was asking for at all and insisted on more flowers to be inserted which would bump up the cost and they wouldn't give us a quote until we agreed to buy. That is not the purpose of a quote. Another store didn't give us a quote until a month after we visited. We were starting to lose hope until we called up Flowers by Merle and they worked with us to see what would work best at a reasonable price and they gave us a quote the same day we visited. When we talked closer to the wedding they informed us that some of the flowers we originally chose were not looking good this season so they agreed to add in different, even more beautiful flowers at no extra cost. There is a decent selection of gifts here- quilts, stuffies, soaps and handmade items- as well as several simple potted plants and air plants. Located on Stony Plain Road just off downtown, Flowers By Merle is a florist which offers cut flowers, arrangements and custom designed for special occasions. Like many boutique florists, they are pricey, but you get what you pay for. However, whatever your price point you'll have a beautiful arrangement. I will admit that I haven't visited Merle's often and in quite a long time. They have moved from the Stony Plain location now for several months, on 105Ave off of 124th. I called them in place of my usual local florist (Angie, at Petals on the Trail) since she was busy and kindly told me. I called Merle's and ordered a bouquet for a friend who loves flowers for her birthday. My call in was a funny one since I was on their site and basically asked for a combination of 3 different styles of what they had :-) The person I spoke to on the phone was patient and very nice about it and told me not to worry that they would do their best. I went in at the appointed time and unfortunately, my order wasn't done because of a communication error. They apologized profusely and asked if I could come back in about 40 minutes...I asked if they were sure and they assured me all would be taken care of and would make it up to me. In fact, for the amount I was originally charged, they were kind enough to add more flowers for their error :-) My friend LOVED her flowers and I appreciate the way the florists at Merle's handled the situation for me. On the recommendation of a friend, I chose Flowers by Merle to handle the floral arrangements for my wedding. We sat down with Denise and she helped us figure out how to achieve some of the unique looks I was after, including the use of white ostrich feathers. There was one miscommunication which briefly caused me some stress. At the consultation, we were told that they would source the ostrich feathers and bill me for them. Three days before the wedding, more than a week after I had touched base with them already about the order, I got a call asking when I'd be bringing the feathers in. I explained what we had worked out at the consultation and was told that on the order it was handwritten "client will provide." After scrambling myself to try to find some last minute ostrich feathers, I received a call saying that they found my feather. Crisis averted, but needlessly stressful. The final price was also quite a bit higher than I was quoted and the feathers were said to be the cause, even though the consultation at the time was supposed to have taken that into account. The end result, though, was well worth the stress and extra cost. The bouquets and centrepieces were absolutely stunning and unique while still being classic. The arrangements were an incredible contribution to the atmosphere of the wedding and I couldn't have been happier with how everything looked. The one complaint I have is with my bridal bouquet. The tip of a bouquet handle is supposed to be smooth, either by the shape or by being covered with something (ie. florist tape, ribbon). While the maid of honour bouquet had a smooth rounded tip on the plastic handle, my bouquet handle was broken at the tip leaving a very rough edge. I didn't notice until after I saw two very visible snags in the fabric of my dress after the ceremony. The bouquet was beautiful, but I cannot overlook my wedding dress being damaged. I do recommend Flowers by Merle, but I advise all brides to ask for a photocopy of the order the consultant writes up in case of miscommunication and to check the bouquet handle before walking down the aisle. read more

I had the pleasure of shopping at this flower shop several times. I am completely dense when it comes to flower arrangements, and I prefer it when somebody more knowledgeable helps me create a bouquet or hands me an already made one. I only shop at Flowers by Merle when I need to make a statement with a beautiful and expensive flower arrangement. Bouquets are priced anywhere from $45 to $130. At any price point, they are beautiful! You have a choice among vase and basket arrangements. There are also beautiful exotic flowers the names of which I cannot pronounce.There is also an array of fake flowers, but I was never a fan of those. Flowers by Merle sells gorgeous long stem roses. I once bought a dozen for my mom's birthday, and a week later they were still fresh and firm. Evidently, higher prices mean better quality flowers. Flower arranging ladies are friendly and helpful. read more

I've often ordered by phone and had flowers delivered, and they've always been spectacular, both in the arrangement, and getting the flowers delivered by a certain time. It's funny how you can drive past a place for a decade and never actually stop and go in. Well, I decided to stop and go in! The shop is lovely. Huge, way bigger then most floral shops. It's more like a home decor store that specializes in floral and plant arrangements. Some of the pieces were huge, like thousands of dollars huge; the kind of arrangement that would be placed in a hotel lobby or for upscale buildings, etc. and the massive pieces are just gorgeous. It is worth a stop in just to see them. The do a fantastic job in creating custom designs for the season. Currently it is about to be fall, so the use of autumn colours and flora/fauna was just breathtaking. The young woman that was working and helped me out was also very nice and helpful. With such a fabulous location I imagine that Merle's does quite well. I can't wait to see the arrangements they come up with for winter! read more

Definitely one of the best customer service experiences I have ever had! Right when I entered I was surprised by the size and openness of the store. I was there to get some tiger lilies in an arrangement--however, I am no expert and do not know what would look good together. However, he immediately suggested some different options; funny thing, I suggested something and he was completely blunt and honest in saying that my suggestion would look tacky (guess that goes to show that I am not the flower arrangement expert) but what really impressed me is that he then walked me over and held up different options (side-by-side). This guy know what he is talking about and he really does care about what he does. It gets even better; I really wanted to have these flowers delivered to her work but because of the location and volume of orders for Valentine's, there is no guarantee for delivery within the timeframe that I required. However, a lady took care of me and knew that I really wanted to have these delivered so she called a courier (ACS) that her daughter uses frequently. She handed the phone over to me to let me personally talk to the owner of ACS to explain my situation. He said there would be no problem having the flowers delivered in the required timeframe for the same price!!! The flowers arrived and the price-to-flower turnout was fantastic! Huge bouquet of flowers and was definitely the smoothest Valentine's Day flower arrangement I have ever experienced. I will definitely be using Flowers By Merle for every flower occasion from now on! I ordered flowers for my mother for Mother's Day. After looking at every flower shop in Edmonton for what was probably 2 hours long (after all, mom deserves the best!), I decided on an exotic looking bouquet from Flowers by Merle. I used to live in Edmonton and used to drive by there all the time, so it was a familiar name that I thought I'd give a try. I was disappointed with how my bouquet looked in comparison to the actual photo. When all was said and done, I paid around $120 including delivery. I chose this bouquet because it was exotic looking and different - something you would see in a hotel lobby. I was having these delivered to my moms work so I wanted something that would make her feel unique and special. While the flowers delivered are nice (taking into account there probably could never be such a thing as non-nice flowers!) the delivered bouquet did not look exotic, nor what I would deem to be congruent with what one would expect from a "Lavish Collection" section on their website. I was made aware that we wouldn't get two but one of the acorn looking pink flowers as I was told they only had big ones. I was told these big ones are more beautiful. I would have to disagree... the only pretty part of that big flower is the outside, but due to the size, the inside becomes the focus, and not the outside. I was not told the leafage would be different (including not having the long acorn looking leaves). That is part of what makes the picture on their website look exotic. I was told that they may not have the pink flowers either but would sub with roses. I feel I was under the impression that they would be pink in colour (as close as possible to match), definitely not yellow. Overall, the colour scheme of yellow (which definitely wouldn't be my first choice) is more appropriate for a gender neutral baby shower, and not an lavish collection bouquet. The beauty of the picture shown on their website is the flowers are bright, happy, pink and colourful. The vases didn't match. Lastly, upon counting the flowers, I cannot quite see the extra +$10 in value that I paid for. The lady that helped me was wonderful and I do recognize she went the extra mile to write out a longer card message (allowing me to email her a note) and ensured the flowers were delivered the next morning (I called on a Thursday morning for Friday delivery to my moms work) - all of which I truly appreciate. I know I called on a Thursday of a Mother's Day weekend so they were probably very busy. However, quality should not suffer if an order is accepted, anytime of the year. If a flower shop is unable to fulfill the true look of a bouquet, suggesting another bouquet would have been more appropriate. I emailed the company because I've seen a lot of flowers in my time, working with brides for the last 7 years. Their website states a 100% guarantee. I didn't ask for a refund but I felt the feedback would be helpful to them. Their response: "The reason this arrangement is included in the lavish section is because of the oriental lilies that are included." - I completely disagree with this comment as one can see that other parts of the bouquet are exotic and lavish looking too, like the unique acorn looking flowers. "Because of shortages of flowers as the week when on with the mother's day rush, we unfortunately had to substitute yellow roses for the red carnations and provided the more expensive Oriental lilies in place of the standard Asiatic lilies." - is this where the extra $10 (to make the bouquet more deluxe) I paid went to? Had I not paid the extra $10 they would have had to of done this anyway. "As to the picture of the arrangement you provided, it is not taken at the same angle as our web site photo and if they were placed side by side except for the yellow roses would look very similar." - I disagree, yellow and pink are very different colours. "On reviewing the order I see we did fill the order with flowers at a price far exceeding what was paid." They responded by offering a $25 credit. I am a business owner and know this is an attempted effort businesses use all the time to give the illusion of giving you something that is essentially useless. In order to use $25 I have to spend an equal amount at least (most bouquets are at least $50 at a minimum) so by offering this they will at least break even on their offer and retain full profit on the original order. Businesses also use this tactic for customers they know will likely never come back. Bottom line, they didn't fulfill their 100% satisfaction guarantee and I would not order flowers from this flower shop without having them email you a picture of the flowers before they go out for delivery. I also didn't see the value in upgrading my bouquet. read more

This is one of the most ridiculous flower shops I have ever dealt with and I rarely write negative reviews. I do not have experience with their wedding arrangements, I just placed a simple order to have a bouquet delivered for a friend after she had been in the hospital with a very serious illness. The shop is on the same street as my friend's location, about 1km away, this is why I chose it. I placed the order at 2pm in the afternoon. Even though the delivery was extremely pricey ($14 just to deliver), and the shop was only 5 minutes away they could not do the delivery for me until the next day. I understood even though I thought it a little ridiculous but they promised me they would get it to her early the next day. I wanted it to be a surprise. So, the next day came and still no delivery by 10 am. I called the shop and they said they would not deliver it until NOON. I explained that this was very important and that my friend was leaving soon and could they please deliver it early? No such luck--the shop is just down the road from her house! A florist could have just run it down to keep a customer happy. In the end I had to beg my friend to wait at her house and ruin the surprise by telling her a delivery was coming. Completely ruined the point of sending her flowers without telling her. Then, before noon I called to check the status of the delivery and apparently the delivery guy had tried and couldn't reach her so he just came back witht he flowers! She is ILL and they had her cell phone! She was waiting patiently for the delivery and must have gone to the washroom or something for a second and he must have tried once and left. Or they could have called me because they have my number as well! Totally useless, if I hadn't have called I don't even know what they would have done, just left them at the shop? When I called they told me to makesure my friend is waiting downstairs and that he would go back with them if she was waiting for them. WHAT? I am used to dealing with flower shops that are really happy to have my business and really flexible and accomodating. This one acted as though I should be lucky they were even delivering my flowers. I think you should really look into other flower shops before visitng this one. The one good thing I can say is that they flowers were really nice when they eventually got there. Flowers by Merle did my artificial wedding flowers. I requested two items early, which they said was no problem. When I got them home, they were covered in hot glue strings and one even fell apart. I emailed to say it was no big deal since I requested them early, but that the rest of the flowers needed to be fully finished. When I arrived at the shop, I found my email taped to the box with a note saying to make sure I checked everything carefully. Again, they were covered in hot glue strings and one bouquet's ribbon was actually dirty. It looked as though they rushed the order and didn't finish them properly. When I addressed my concerns, our consultant (Sandra) yelled, "You're really picky!". Clearly they are not interested in providing the quality they claim to. I just wanted simple and they added all kinds of things to my bouquets. It's frustrating to pay someone for a job and then have to do it yourself! The flowers are beautiful, but not worth the snarky comments from Sandra. She's great with new people, but once you've paid a deposit she doesn't listen at all. read more

Absolutely terrible. My Father passed away and flowers by Merle was phoning my Mother to deliver flowers that someone was trying to send. The lady on the phone was extremely rude and was yelling at my Mom when they connected on the phone the next day. She was upset that my Mom didn't have voicemail on her phone and was extremely unaccommodating. My Mom couldn't commit to when she would be home and asked that the flowers be left on the porch or with either neighbor to the side. The lady on the phone said she couldn't do that. I was close to phoning this woman back and telling her to keep the flowers and refund whoever ordered them. If you are sending sympathy flowers NEVER use flowers by Merle. I wasn't sure exactly what kind of flowers I wanted for my September wedding but when I met with Sandra she was super helpful and gave some great suggestions. Originally I was just going to get the bouquets and boutonnieres from here but the pricing was so fair that I asked them to do my centerpieces as well! I got so many compliments on my bridal bouquet and I was so happy with how all the flowers turned out. Flowers? A+ Service?:F Here's why" It took 6 hours from Merle's call that a huge bouquet was coming to get them from 10 minutes away. Though warned by us and by Merle to note the name of our street carefully, their delivery people went to the wrong house on the wrong street (had they not read the red-underlined address? No map? No GPS? No cell?) and dropped flowers off when no one answered. They then neglected to tell Merle of the error or call us and leave a message. When I called Merle, they said the flowers were left at my neighbors'. I went there. No flowers.. What to do? Luckily for us, the right non-neighbor eventually called us, and I walked to their home and called Merle to tell them their delivery was awfully poor. No apology, just word that the delivery people were not available for comment but would be notified soon. Now I'm not available for receiving or sending orders from Merle. They used illiterate or confused or illiterate, confused delivery people. They charge for delivery, Now, that is funny. Are you willing to test them? read more

They are very knowlegeable and were able to create beautiful arrangements based on our color scheme. I did a lot of looking around and they are definitely one of the most affordable places in Edmonton for wedding florals. read more

Is there a spot for NO stars??? I'm getting married in August and my best friend lives in Edmonton and was doing some flower shopping for me. I thought the florist was suppose to work WITH you and not against you !!! They basically came out and told her they couldn't work with her AT ALL because the pictures she brought in had prices on them that they couldn't meet. They were too low !!! Seriously??? I am paying for my flowers and they should have worked with her to see what they could have done to make what I wanted and THEN quote !!! The pictures were for design ideas NOT for the cost on what was in the picture. I wasn't reaching for the moon with my design ideas and I found a WONDERFUL, PLEASANT florist here in Calgary to work with me. My best friend left this store feeling defeated and disrespected. I am absolutely appalled about this and will spread the word to anyone in Edmonton who asks my opinion on flower shops ( I lived in Edmonton for many many years) to NEVER go here. I would recommend Safeway before I would recommend these people. I'm disgusted at the lack of customer service. read more
