A decent local hardware store that has almost everything you need. It's a small store, so don't be surprised if they don't carry everything. I was able to make a quick run over to the store and get some fertilizer and spare parts for the shower in a pinch. The staff was friendly and helped me find the right parts to fix the shower. Plumbing is a big deal and having the right sized pipes and connections is the difference between fixing the problem and making it worse. I've shopped here a few times and there have been some rare occurrences where it takes a while to get some help. Plus, there was one time I asked for a recommendation and it was a horrible nightmare. However, most of the time the staff knows what they're talking about and has good advice. When in doubt, check the web for advice from other pros and consumers. read more

Staff is always super helpful and friendly. They can always answer my questions, know the aisles something is located or walk with me to find it. Place is small and Prices are a lil higher than if i made the trip to home depot or lowes but great neighborhood hardware store. read more

Worst customer service ever. I bought two First Alert 10 year smoke and fire alarms in February 2017. One of the alarms bracket was broken. I found a Ace hardware closer to the job to purchase a new one. When I returned with receipt and alarm the following weekend the manager said I needed to speak with the owner. I left receipt and alarm with manager. I returned about a week later on the weekend again and same manager said he lost the alarm and receipt and I'd need to return to ask owner for refund. I returned today and was told they will not refund my money and I should return it to the manufacture. It was only $28.39 but I am going to return to manufacturer and also notify the BBB. These guys are theives in my opinion. Only thing I'd purchase from them are nails and screws. Don't buy anything that may be defective, because you will not get a refund from this Ace. read more

Okay, this store close at 8:00pm. It was 7:50pm. My tenant told me that the bathtub hot water is leaking and can't shut it off. I was rush to my apartment and trying to get it done ASAP due the the hot water continually running. We are in a serious drought already. Long story short. I was rushing to the closest hardware store before they close up. Went in and don't know what I was looking for, never done this before, but I was smart enough the take the old parts with me. I saw this gentlemen and ask what and which to find these parts to fix my leaking faucet? He looks at the parts and was able to figured out what type of parts that I needed. It is amazing the amount of things they have packed in this store and the staff is more than happy to help you find what you need. It is a much more enjoyable experience to find your wares here than trek across oakland and get lost in the labyrinth of home depot. Granted it can be a bit more than home depot, but you get what you pay for. read more

Hey the new owners kept all the old staff!!!! It is almost completely the same!!!!! I am so happy!!!! Sorry if I am gushing, but I was afraid that it was going to change and not for the better. But it is almost the same, maybe, not sure, maybe better. They had GIANT jars of Walnut Creek honey at the check out stand, and books about Oakland history. Along with spar varnish and new keys made and toilet seats and canning supplies and duct tape / duck tape (there's a controversy about that, you know.) Laurel Ace is great place for grabbing that quick home fix. I just moved to the area, and have stopped by so far for a doorbell, bug spray, and other miscellaneous items. They don't necessarily have the largest selection, but the staff is friendly and will do their best to help with your problem! Side note: I am from a smaller town that had its own Ace (big one, garden, rock yard, lumber, housewares, pets, hardware) and it's nice to be able to use my ace rewsrds account! Set one up if you haven't already, it's always a nice surprise when your reward coupons arrive! Quick edit: Decided to put it to 5 stars, yes small selection, but I think if you know that ahead of time, it shouldn't be a problem (just call ahead!) and the private lot is very nice, and I think worth those 5 stars. read more

BUYER BE AWARE!!! I purchased a pair of pliers that their employee picked out at 10:50am. I went back to the store around 2:30pm and wanted to exchange them. I was told they didn't take back tools. The cashier stated that the person that rang me should have told me that, and written on the receipt, no returns. Which neither happened. I wanted to exchange them for another item at a higher cost and asked to speak to a manager. The lady that I spoke to was very rude and said I couldn't exchange them. I stated I would just dispute it with my credit card company. She said that didn't matter and they would dispute it and I would lose. I walked out to my car and 3 employees followed me out and took my picture, front and back picture of my license plate. They treated me like I was a criminal. Ii'LL NEVER SHOP AT THIS STORE AGAIN AND GIVE THEM ANY OF MY HARD EARNED MONEY. After I placed a complaint with Ace Hardware I received a call from someone name Jenny that was rude, and wasn't willing to take back pliers. Laurel Ace Hardware is definitely worth a stop for most home improvements items you may need. While the selection isn't massive, they do have a good variety. I was actually able to find some copper nails that I desperately needed that I couldn't even find at Home Depot. The employees are knowledgeable, too. I'll admit, I hit Home Depot regularly, but their employees generally don't know much -- I suspect being handy isn't a job requirement. Nice little shop. They have most of what you would need for small repairs or projects. For anything big you would have to go to one of the major shops. There are few times when I need to speak out against other reviewers. Shoppers and others continue to want to blame the retail establishment for everything. I have learned to keep the receipt, use manufactures warranties and return items in a timely basis. When you buy anything you should immediately open the package and find out whether it is defective and needs to be returned. Even before this you should make sure it is the correct and appropriate item for you. I have had the opportunity to return a few things to this Ace and have not run into any complications, maybe because the returns followed their return policy. ThIs is one of the smaller Ace hardware stores in Oakland, but I generally check here for anything hardware related. The store has excellent customer service- even when they don't carry what you need they refer you to a store that does. I've learned how to change sprinkler heads from the extremely helpful staff, remove stripped screws and generally find what I need. This is without the frustration of long walks followed by longer waits at checkout and staff that is nonexistent at the HD. read more

Absolutely terrible service. Needed to buy a lot of little parts (duh, it's a hardware store) and the cashier was so put off about having to ring up so many items. Then when the barcode didn't work on one of them she acted like it was my fault the code didn't work she had to call for price check. If I wanted a big attitude and poor service I would be going to Home Depot. Tried to call the manager to let them know they need to work on their customer service but was put on hold forever. The drive to Pastime Ace Hardware is worth the consistently good service I've been getting there for years. Too bad, too, because I love small hardware stores (but not this one). Lovely atmosphere. Lots of snacks for persistent, crafty children with bikes who generally ask for change and free use of tire pumps. They have the most beautiful key collection. A quirky staff who are always willing to share a story or two about their second job at ESPN or their favorite ice cream. Oh yes, don't let me forget their creative closing calls and amazing cashiers and former-cashier-now-turned-manager. I grew up in Redwood Heights and have always relied on this local shop for any repair parts or garden supplies. Yes, it is a small store but I like that. The staff is always helpful. Today was such a wonderful experience with their staff that I think exemplifies the best in customer service. This past week my blender broke and I was trying to fix it myself but got to a point where I needed help. I took it to Laurel on a lark to see if I could get some help with it. Taela took it on after I explained what I was trying to do. After some time trying to repeat what I was doing, she said let's try something different. She took it and found another solution. She even replaced the piece with the spare part I had brought in. I now have a working blender again thanks to Taela! It may be a small thing but it took quite a bit of her time today and she did it with a smile and for nothing in return. Something like this does not happen everywhere. I am so happy and happy to recommend this place as THE local place for all your home repair (and small appliance) projects and repairs! Special shout out to Taela! I've spent hundreds of dollars at this store but today was unfortunately the last time I'll shop there I purchased a pack of 2 lightbulbs a couple of days ago and one of them wasn't working. I brought it back along with my receipt but the store manager wouldn't exchange the bulb. Said that I needed to bring back the entire package so they could resell it. (Really? With a broken bulb?). I explained that going back home to get the other one would cost me as much in gas as buying a whole new pack. All I wanted was a working bulb. It became clear that they didn't want to help and I got tired of arguing and left with the broken merchandise. Life is too short. read more

I had a leaky faucet over my bathtub. The plumber determined that he had to replace a part, which he went out and purchased from Laurel Ace for $60. That part turned out to be defective. Laurel Ace refused to refund the cost of the defective part, saying that it was no longer in its original package. Of course it wasn't in the original package. It had been unwrapped and and installed; that's how the plumber knew it was defective! The plumber got the same part from a different store, and it works perfectly. The plumber had a lot more class than Laurel Ace. Although he paid again for the same part at a different store, he only charged me what he had paid for the first (defective) part. He wrote off the $60 part from Laurel Ace as a "lesson learned." In the future, I won't be patronizing Laurel Ace. read more

I have such mixed feelings about this store. I love that they are local and I can run in and pick up things quickly. However the inventory always seems low on a lot of items. Since they remodeled and installed the two layers of sliding panels, I can never find anything and it always seems like it's a mess. I also had a screen repaired here and it's too loose. I even had them do it a second time because there was a bubble in it, and it's still terrible. I finally just gave up and took it home. And it seems like many of the folks who work there don't know where anything is or have any experience lately. read more

I'm giving 1 star for the elderly guy who was kind enough to assist me. I won't be returning to this store due to their inability to problem solve something as simple as a credit card reader not reading a card. I had to drive all the way to home depot and my card worked fine. Then I went to mcdonalds and my card worked again just fine. How can you not have an option to take a card that won't read? It's a small store but they pack it all in pretty tightly. Customer service is good - somebody's always there to answer questions. A few weeks ago I brought a faulty propane tank back (with receipt) to be exchanged. All of the gas had leaked out of it. Al, the supervisor, told me that he would not take it back as the tank was not theirs. I gave him the receipt, he looked at it for a minute and then said, "oh no, I am not exchanging this. This is from January." Which reason was it then, for him to not take it back - it is not the right tank or the return policy is up? There is no return policy on the receipt. And this is not a return policy anyway - it was a faulty product. I asked for the manager's name and was told it was Richard. My boyfriend went back two weeks later with the same tank and was given his money back, no fuss, no muss, no questions asked. Why? I will never go back. read more

And they are a bit expensive for some things. But I try to shop here anyway, because I don't want this place to disappear. I came 10 mins before they closed & asked for a pint of paint so I could do a project over the weekend. The employee assigned to that area informed me it was too late to mix paint (no one was in front of me) & then said they were closed for the holiday that following day do if I wanted to come back in two days they could help me. I come here regularly as its close to my house, and appreciate the smart selection in the small space and the mostly helpful staff. Unlike box stores like Home Depot, there is always someone on the floor to help. The staff seems younger/greener/less knowledgeable than in days past. They still help me find what I need when I know what that is, but I no longer seek advice for home repairs here. Management: you have a young staff here that is trying their best, maybe show them a little love and improve morale. Train them, let them have some fun on the job. As a resident and homeowner in Millsmont, I have to say that I am already seeing positive changes in our local hardware store. I have been driving to Osh and Home Depot in lew of frequenting Laurel Ace Hardware, which is much more convenient, because I was treated so badly by the former owners.
