It's a nice idea- running a non-profit to keep a historic hotel stuck in time alive. It's expensive and atrociously dirty. They even threaten to charge a huge fee if you smoke in your room, while the filthy housekeepers are on the street smoking every 5 minutes. Our first room hadn't even been cleaned yet. We were given a free upgrade and while the towels and sheets looked fresh- the bathroom and rest of the furniture in the bedroom hadn't been cleaned in what looks like ages. The bathroom still had dirt and popcorn on the floor. The nightstands and refrigerator had visible dust everywhere. The bathtub is peeling and can't be used. The carpet is so disgusting we didn't take our shoes off. Gross place. Too bad- nice idea. Old is ok, but clean it. read more

This is a hotel centrally located in downtown Brattleboro. It has a theatrical theme and has a historic movie theater attached. We stayed in a two room suite. The rooms were spacious and clean. There was no temperature control when we stayed there. The ACs were shut off and the rooms were warm. Not a bad thing if you sleep warm, but I like a cold room and was a little uncomfortable. There was a fan provided and it helped. Downstairs in the lobby is a cool coffee nook where you can sit on comfy couches and can enjoy free coffee, tea or hot chocolate. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The movie theater is stunning. If you don't take in a movie, you should at least take a peek inside. There is a small restaurant attached to the hotel as well. The menu is limited but the food was good. There is very limited parking at this hotel which was disappointing. There is a public parking lot next door, but it's paid and I don't know if it's overnight. The location is great. You can walk to many shops and restaurants and covered bridges are only a short drive away. read more

The hotel is in a great location. There is a lot of history and quaintness about it. When we awoke in the morning and the light came into the room we immediately saw a tremendous amount of of dog hair and other debris on the carpet. We left early and I phoned the front desk when it opened to tell her. She was apologetic and suggested I speak with the manager. I left my information but never got a call back. I was going to give a rating of 3 until I received no contact from the manager to make it right. read more

I stayed with my spouse at the Latchis for a weekend. The person at the front desk was lovely, and everyone on staff we dealt with very cordial and nice. My issue with this hotel is that the first floor of room. It is truly disgusting. Our room has serious water damage in the room, and bathroom. I understand that the windows are original to the hotel, however when requesting a Mountain View room you'd think you'd be able to see out of the windows. But they were disgusting. The carpet in the room should be ripped out due to all the stains. The hall consistently smelled like smoke. The other kicker is being unable to control the temperature of the room, which really didn't matter until the evening when our room would turn into a sweat lodge. Both my spouse and I had a lot of difficulty sleeping because the street noise is so bad. I'm sure there are nice rooms here but none of them are on the first floor of rooms. read more

My friends and I stayed at the Latchis for 4 nights during the recent "Wagner in Vermont" opera festival (the operas were fantastic). The staff at the hotel were very sweet and as helpful as they could be but the accommodations were severely lacking, especially given the $250/night rate we were paying. For example: --We were told at check-in that room temperature could not be adjusted but there were extra blankets. It was freezing in the room, both my roommate and I slept in sweatpants and sweatshirts, and I had my hood up because my pillow was in the a/c vent's line-of-fire. --The shower curtain rod in one of our rooms was held up with a string. --There was what appeared to be raspberry jam or jelly on the inside of one of the curtains. --One of the bathrooms appeared to not have been dusted in quite a while. --The other bathroom had a sink that drained slowly and clanked loudly as it did. That bathroom was also very dimly lit. --The windows have the potential to be gorgeous but at least in our rooms many of the panes were cracked and broken; also the windows had not been washed since whenever. --The lining of the curtains was so worn that the light from the street came through in dotted-swiss style. --The furniture in both rooms was very dusty, including the record player that is a nice idea that doesn't really work if the thing is dirty. --One of our rooms had newish mattresses and comfortable beds but the other room had old and uncomfortable bedding. --The bartender in the lobby restaurant ("Sages") told us they did not know how to make a Manhattan and then proved they didn't know how to make a martini, since the 3 we ordered were 95% vermouth. They also failed to submit our dinner order during the opera intermission so we had to run to the food coop during the next intermission. Anyway - you get the idea. I imagine that the art collective that runs the hotel does not have much experience in the hospitality industry or is simply out over their skis. They also probably don't have much money and this place needs serious repair. Probably going to attend next year's opera festival but will find other accommodations. read more

We absolutely loved our stay at the Latchis!!! We came for the Strange Ones Ball at Stone Church and had such a great time!! The hotel has so much history and I just felt so lucky to be able to stay in a place that really holds onto the old touches like the original keys, water faucets, furniture and radiators. The record player and assortment of records was pretty cool too! The bed was super comfy and although you can't adjust your own heat/ac, we were able to open the window and hear the river and they have a fan in the closet if needed!!! The staff were great and the complimentary coffee bar was a total bonus!!! We will absolutely be back! Check out their $30 dinner and a movie package where they give you a movie ticket +drink+popcorn+$25 gift card to one of a few local restaurants. I HIGHLY recommend Echo Restaurant and Lounge!! Also: in addition to the fan in the closet, there's an ironing board/iron and a blow dryer in the bathroom. read more

Family of 5 stayed for one night during Wagner in Vermont - we all slept very well - comfy beds - clean and spacious room and bathroom - very thick carpet which made it a little difficult for the knee scooter I was using. Great elevator and coffee in the foyer. It was fabulous listening to the opera singers singing as they made their coffee and later rehearsed. Unique and memorable experience for all of us. There were some homeless people who politely asked for food. And many people congregating in the parking lot at night. The hotel staff brought our keys to us as we came in and we're so kind and helpful. We will definitely be back again. read more

The whole check in process was good. Reception was polite and informative, accommodations were nice. Somewhat hot in room during nighttime. Opened window to cool down but noise from street in early hours woke us up. Coffee available downstairs to go.Bed comfy, room clean. Could use a little paint on dark painted walls. You can't beat the location of this hotel if you're seeing a show in the theater, or just looking to be in downtown Brattleboro - I think it's the only hotel downtown. We've been there twice, most recently this past weekend. Firstly, the service/staff at the desk was superb, couldn't ask for better. She let us park in the lot even though we couldn't check in for another 3-4 hours, and she was super friendly. The building is very cool and enchanting. Old building, beautiful wood work, etc. The downsides include the plumbing - could only get about 1/4 of the water to come out of the shower head, most of it was coming out of the tub faucet - very frustrating - not fun to get down on your hands and knees to rinse out the shampoo. Another major negative is that you can't control your own heat/a.c. It was an unseasonably hot day in April, we were on the 3rd floor, and it was so hot we were miserable all night - there was a large fan in the closet which we used in front of an open window, but it didn't help enough. We thought about leaving the mini fridge door open to provide a little "a.c." Lastly, the noise from the hallway is crazy. You can hear every footstep echoing, every door shutting, every word spoken, etc. Hint - use the fan on high to mask the noise. The place was clean, and the bed was comfy. Just be prepared to deal with some inconveniences. read more

Visit 7/17/20 This is my first experience here and if I visit Brattleboro again I would definitely stay. The location is great and the staff are friendly. Given COVID the contact is very minimal with staff and and you can self check out ! The AC is preset BUT you have access to fans, I personally am always super hot at night and I didn't even need to use the fan. Some places now have indoor / outdoor dining FYI. One critique I think the carpet in our room was weird. read more

Wonderful eclectic hotel. Hotel rooms tend to all look the same to me, but this one had such character. Rustic feel in the antique sense, NOT meaning seedy. It was all extremely comfortable and meticulously comfortable. (First to catch my eye was the beautiful old (working) rotary dial phone.) The staff was as friendly as you could imagine in a small Vermont town, and helpful with everything I asked for. Great views, set right beside a babbling stream that feeds the big Connecticut River right nearby. Really easy to get to, right on Main St. I took the train from NYC, and it's about a 2-minute walk from the Amtrak station, which sits right on the river. 1 THING TO BEWARE: No individual A/C in the room. Supposedly there is some sort of central air. I came in late July, and the nights are very cool at this altitude. It was comfortable, but a few degrees cooler than I would have wished for. (Mainly I fretted that I might get too warm, as I run VERY warm, but it was fine.) The windows open, but no screens. I asked downstairs and he said bugs are not generally a problem, so I opened them for several hours and got no bugs. I chuckled at one review that described the furnishings as old and dated. Good lord. That's the point. Really beautifully done. There is also a free continental breakfast from 8-11 a.m. I got there right before 11 and the milk bottle in the fridge was nearly out. I asked the desk guy (10 steps away) for more and he brought it about 30 seconds later, with a smile. I truly loved this place. I don't know that I've said that about a hotel before. read more

Pros: location. So much to do right there. It's cool it is in a working movie theatre. Record player in the room with records! Bed was comfortable. The check-in woman was great! CONS: They charged me an extra night ($120) and I had to go through my credit card company because no one from Latchis returned my emails/calls. The drains in the shower suck. I would be done showering for 5 minutes and the water was still draining. I talked with the front desk and the guy said "we know, it's an old hotel." The toilet seat broke (FYI I'm under 200 pounds). There is no carpeting or rugs in the hallway and the walls are very thin; so you hear everything. Initially I was excited to stay at this hotel as I love movies and worked at a theatre for a number of years. But I had a horrible experience and do not recommend staying here. read more

I had high hopes for this hotel from the website. but the rooms featured on the website were not the same as the rooms we stayed in. there's no insulation so expect to hear the people talking in the rooms near you, and coughing up phlegm in the middle of the night. the coffee machine didn't work. the blankets on the bed were minimal. and to top it all off the space between my bedside table and the bed was covered in toe nail clippings, hair and dried skin. so gross. the person in the lobby was not friendly and unorganized. but their was free accessible parking. wouldn't stay again though that's for damn sure. read more

This is a beautiful, restored hotel and theatre from the 1930s. We have a views of the Connecticut River, a bridge, and trains passing by, which my two sons got a big kick out of. Each room has a record player and assorted records (our record set included Burt Bacharach songs played on the marimba and Harry Belafonte). Such a great find! When we vacation in Vermont again, we will definitely stay here. I'm surprised by how affordable it was. read more

The hotel is generally a beautiful Art Deco space with a lovely theater. The town is quaint, and we had a beautiful view of the Connecticut River from our room. The mattress was unstable, so every time my husband or I moved, the other knew it. The street noise was unbelievably loud. We had to sleep with windows open because the room was warm. Fortunately the oscillating fan provided air movement and a little white noise. The bathtub was very roomy, but the drain was broken and water was kept in by a rubber drain cover. Not hotel related, but don't plan to stay early in the week. Restaurants don't open until Wednesday. read more

Secondly, I couldn't believe the mold in the bathroom and the mildew smell of our room. When I went downstairs to complain about the bathroom, no one was available. This place was horrible! Not at all what was on the website. I gave it two stars because the location is good. Downtown, near everything. Good for a night where you plan on being out and drinking, since the bars are close. As far as the hotel... First, they called me while I was driving there to say they had "double-booked" my room. They didn't upgrade, in fact I got downgraded from a king to a queen, but still charged me the same. I arrived, and the man at the desk was very disorganized. Not a big deal, but we got the keys(two actual keys) and headed to our room. The room is small and VERY outdated. Not vintage, outdated. The toilet is like one out of high-school with a medal lever to pull. Very low quality. The whole thing was low quality and VERY disappointing. The hotel has a great location and is easily accessible downtown but our carpet had bleach-like spots throughout, the furniture and fixtures looked dated and horribly old, and the hairdryer was from the 80s and kept "eating" my hair and causing a terrible burned hair smell. I really wanted to give the Latchis 5-stars as the staff are lovely and it provided me safe harbor in the middle of Winter Storm Fortis (I regret trying to drive through that). However, as someone who is an exceedingly light sleeper, I found a somewhat restless night. The decor is old, yes, but that is not really a problem. My problem was the stiffness of the bed, the hard pillows, and the noise of the hotel. Now, I don't expect every hotel to have the bedding of a Ritz Carlton, but it was a rather cold night and there was only one thin blanket and a very hard mattress. I may have slept if I hadn't been chilled and if the pillows hadn't felt a bit brickish. For me, the hardest thing was the ambient sound. I was in the cheaper room, in the back of the hotel, and it must be located (as cheaper rooms usually are) by the heating system. There were bangs and click and hums all through the night and I honestly didn't sleep a wink. Love the idea of the Latchis, love the staff, but I slept terribly and found it hard to relax. read more

The Latchis is a pretty cool hotel in downtown Brattleboro. It's definitely not a high end place but it's a good and affordable hotel if you want to stay downtown. As for the rooms, they are simple and adequate. Overall they are a little dated and the bathrooms could use a major overhaul, but it's not bad for a one night stay. Unfortunately there wasn't individual AC control for the rooms so we were at the mercy of the central system. Luckily it was a cool night so we opened the windows. As for parking they had a private lot down the street which was very helpful considering parking rules seem to be strict downtown. Overall this isn't a fancy hotel, but it was clean, the staff was nice, and it is in a great location. It also has some unique charm to it. read more

Cozy and quaint. Retro feel with comfortable rooms. The "dine and recline" package is a great deal. $150 gets you a room, 2 movie tickets, and a $50 gift certificate to the Adagio Tratoria restaurant. The movie theatre is downstairs and is a treat in itself. We often go for a weekend get-a-way in the winter and you don't have to leave the building for the movie theatre or for an after movie drink or snack at one of the two restaurants in the building. The building has had extensive renovations, but has maintained it's old New England charm. The bathtubs are the biggest I've ever seen, but the showers have those terrible water saver heads that offer more of a stinking spray then relaxing shower, so go for the bath. The location in downtown Brattleboro with its Main Street of great little shops and restaurants also makes it the perfect base camp for exploring the town. read more

We stayed at Latchis for a long weekend to celebrate my birthday, and it was wonderful. The atmosphere of the lobby and common areas keeps the old theatre charm, and it's great. I love that Paris the dog is in the lobby often to say hello. The staff is super friendly and they have a great breakfast nook in the lobby to help you start your day off right. I stayed here the other day and had an absolutely wonderful, magical experience. Brattleboro is a fantastic little town with excellent small businesses - quirky shops, great restaurants, cool bars, local art, etc - and the Latchis is situated within walking distance. It is located next to a beautiful river, surrounded by old buildings (mills perhaps) with a walking bridge adjacent to the parking lot. The hotel itself is a wonderful piece of Art Deco and it felt like stepping back into the 30's while walking the halls. The rooms are excellent - good size, very clean, and contain many amenities, including a hairdryer, iron, flatscreen tv, etc. I was there in early winter and the heat was cranked when I came in. It was easy to control and I closed the valve which made the room comfortable in short order. The staff was friendly and a free breakfast was provided downstairs. In addition to the high quality of the hotel basics, the overall vibe felt very magical when I was there. I got there at night, checked in, and went out for a drink. When I came back, the front desk had closed and the halls were empty. They had speakers throughout the place, softly playing Christmas music (which generally I would find annoying, but this had a wonderful and magical quality about it) which echoed throughout the halls. I wandered around and explored a bit, completely entranced with the place, the history, decor, and the overall feel of it. I absolutely loved it. I didn't attend the movie theater but I love that it's included in the building. It has a very old timey, 1930's feel, and there was some memorabilia, such as film reels, decorating the place. As I was checking out, someone who I believe was a manager came and asked how my stay was. He was very friendly and open to answering questions about the history of the place. I felt he genuinely loved the hotel and cared about the quality of my stay. So, in short, this is one of the most wonderful hotel experiences I've ever had. Perhaps my all-time favorite. Hotel parking lot is small but there is a public lot right next door (free in Sunday's but have to pay otherwise) Our room had a record player in it and the decor was really cute! Of course, being a man who is vertically gifted, I have to give them credit for a high showerhead, but take away those same points for putting footboards on a twin bed. Brattleboro is an interesting town, filled with stores and restaurants. The rooms are furnished in the Shaker style. The architecture is Art Deco, and it goes back to the Big Band era, such as Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, and Glenn Miller. read more

Friendly staff, pricey rooms with no air conditioning controls in the room. We opened the windows to get some air, but not all of the old windows open. Plus they were filthy. The full beds had footboards on them that prevented me from stretching out. Lots of traffic noise during the day, but awesome downtown location. We did not try the breakfast. I highly suggest you take advantage of their package deals--excellent value. read more

They weren't offering the Pub package again when I booked as the Flat St Brewpub was pretty decimated by the floods after Hurricane Irene last summer. Best thing about this hotel is that it's an easy one block from the Amtrak station. That being said, it's a no-frills motel. The staff were all very nice, and rooms were clean enough if you squint. If you just need a place to rest your head at the end of the day, and don't need an extravagant breakfast (or any other B&B perk for that matter), then should be a fine option if you score a discounted rate online. read more
