Just being allowed to see the inside of the building is a treat... The affordable priced movie is like a bonus. The Latchis building is a beautifully restored and well loved multi-use art deco style building. Last night I saw a movie in the main theater for the first time and I was NOT expecting the auditorium to be gorgeous or to be disappointed that we didn't have time before the movie to properly take it in. Both the lobby and main theater are very ornate and Greek themed. To quote my husband after doing a double take when we entered the theater"... Well,... This is very beautiful..." About a decade ago I saw a movie in theater 3 which is just a small plain serviceable theater... In no way preparing me for the main theater. This is a historic theater...and you are getting an old school experience. The seats don't recline and you don't book them in advance. Tickets are $10 for adults and the staff is nice and helpful. If you are staying in the Latchis hotel you never even have to leave the building. I didn't get any concessions... But they are a Pepsi house which is always deeply disappointing to me. This place would be perfect if it sold beer like the historic Somerville theater in Boston. But there i is a pub in the same building for before or after the show. My first time here and will be my last. First, yes the theater is beautiful. But that doesn't make it a good movie theater. The seats were extremely uncomfortable. I had to get up several times due to back pain. We asked for a popcorn with extra butter, we only got one squirt and it mostly felt like licking a salt stick. Prices are prices for the area: $9/adult, $5/popcorn, $3/candy. The Bellows Falls theater is significantly cheaper, but does have a more limited showing. The staff also wasn't very friendly. Not worth the hour drive for this. read more

It's a cool place but if you go there to actually enjoy your movie, probably better to do to a more updated theater. The chairs are uncomfortable and the snack bar is super limited. They don't even have cup holders in theater 3. They don't have Coca-Cola. When I go to a theater I always get a large Coke. No one gets excited about ordering a large Pepsi. Perhaps the worst part of the whole experience was the theater 3 audio balance. I literally felt like my ears were gonna explode whenever the was an action packed scene. Latchis is quaint and I honestly appreciate it for what it is. However, I only go there to see movies that I'm sorta interested in. If it's a movie I'm dying to see or it's a long one, I will go to a nicer theater with cozy seats, etc... The reason why this rating is only 3 stars and not more is because tonight they let a group of 13 fifteen year olds into an R movie. Normally I wouldn't care but these kids were acting their age. They were wrestling in the seats, taking selfies, shouting over each other and all around disrespectful. It was a nightmare and yes I most certainly addressed them and it got no where. I know their freaking phone passwords because I saw them unlock it every 2 mins. Please for the love of all that is holy, please card these little shits. I can't believe I just watched the newest installment of Mission Impossible in Theater #4 at the Latchis. I've had passable experiences in pre-renovation Theater #1, and even in the tiny Theater #3. But watching a high-budget action flick in Theater #4? Let me put it this way. The screen was small to begin with, and the resolution of the picture wasn't properly configured to fill the screen. Plus, those chairs. At least they had cupholders? If you'll excuse me, I'm late for an appointment with my chiropractor. read more

This is the way that a theatre should be showing movies, before the age of cookie cutter cinemas. I remember as a child in school coming here for live shows on the stage, with the movie screen behind them. The theatre has an amazing history as well, with Greek architecture throughout the seating area, the zodiac on the ceiling, and a balcony that may or may not be still used for viewing movies. They've added a few small screens to accommodate more movies, but from the time you walk in to the ticket counter, you're welcomed in to a bit of cinematic history that will make you wish that we had more of these around. read more

Pretty sweet theatre! Went for their Samurai and Monster film festival, was not disappointed. Only like... I think, eight bucks for a double feature! Folding chairs in a room with a projector. But very very cute and fun. :) EDIT: The small room which I describe in the above review is now gone; however, the main theater is still there, beautiful as ever. Yes, the sound gives out now and then, and picture is not always top notch... but tickets are cheap, they sell fresh baked cookies at the concession stand, and they have great two-for-one showing prices! read more

Sweet old time theatre. Nice special programming on weekends at 4pm. Art Deco lobby and main big theatre are cool.

Old, musty and yet, charming. Don't expect to find any cup holders or head rests. Instead, take in soaring ceilings, chipped Greek murals, and columns. The faded velvet seats, the art deco walls and the giant astrological painting on the main theatre ceiling...all of those things are what makes this place feel special. I remember seeing so many wonderful movies here over the years...and there is no other place quite like it. Just saw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows here this past weekend with my Mom and sister...and it was like I had never left. :) read more

"You gotta see the baby! You've GOT to see the BABY!" Remember that one from Seinfeld? Yep, the "ugly baby" episode, in which Elaine and Jerry visit friends and their new born child. "He looked like a Pekinese," says Elaine. ------------ What can you say when locals proudly show off what they assume you will (sensibly of course!) agree is their little town gem? Standing in the ticket line in the marbled 1930's entry way, you and host begin your pre-movie chatter. "Nice, huh? They just renovated the place!" says your local guide. "Well, it's a nice foyer." "The renovations were inside. Wait til you see it!" remarks your excited host. After five minutes procuring tickets and securing traditional movie time sustenance at the concession stand, you venture inside. Perhaps you will be seeing the big hit film du jour, and will be viewing said film in the main theatre (there are four all together). You wander in, okay popcorn and standard fountain drink in hand. You sit down. "Charming, isn't it?" says your host. "Seems so," say you, while looking around the cavern trying to get comfortable in your seat. "Um, are these new seats?" "Yes!" replies your local. "Great aren't they?" The faux leather seats, small, narrow and unyielding with minimal leg room and no cup holders are already challenging your lower back. "Uh, well what were the old ones like?" "The old ones? Just like this, but kinda worn out. They replaced them with the same style. Cool, huh?" "Let me get this straight," you ask incredulously. "They renovated the place and put the same seats in? The ones from 1930?" "Yep. And check out the new paint on the walls and ceiling." You look up at the blue domed ceiling and walls. There are large, life sized standing figurines, garish heroes of Greek mythology staring back at you. "It's kinda blue. A little too much, don't you think?" you ask. "Well, I think they got a deal at Walmart." "Who did the renovations?" "Um, I'm not sure, but I think they got a deal on that, too," replies your guide. "I wonder what they meant by renovations....?" If you are not so lucky to find yourself in the "renovated" imperial Greek main theatre, you will be viewing your film in one of three other screening rooms: theatre 2 a.k.a. "the Closet", theatre 3 or "The Ballroom Sauna", or the ridiculous theatre 4, a collection of folding chairs normally set up in the local high school audio-visual club meeting. Generally a decent choice of films on offer (which can be viewed in far more comfort at theaters in Greenfield or Keene, or better yet, the Bellows Falls Opera House), as well as the occasional special events. Kudos to the front staff however, who are always friendly. Otherwise, sadly, The Latchis Theatre is Brattleboro's ugly baby. read more

Brattleboro is a beautiful town, of that I am sure. It is wonderful no matter how you slice it. Of my memories of Brattleboro some institutions stand out, among them are the Latchis, It has an old school charm to it despite the ongoing renovations that are taking place on the premise. Not only is the Latchis very charming in its art deco design it is also reasonably priced at 7.50. Also the cookies and confections that are sold are in themselves reasonably priced. Suffice to say the Latchis has alot going for it however if you are a technophile do not expect the Latchis to have the most up to date equipment don't get me wrong it has good sound and picture in its theaters, they are just not the best also there is a pub that connects to the Latchis which is also nice. read more

I cannot say enough good about the Latchis hotel and their staff! I recently had my birthday party at the hotel and stayed in one of their suites. The manager, Johnathan, was incredible. He was so accomdating and friendly. He went out of his was to make my day extra special. As for the rest of the staff, they were friendly, kind, and helpful! The hotel was clean and cozy and wonderful. We will be staying here again soon!! read more

The sound in the main theater is horrific and it fades in and out. Occasionally their projectors will crap out in the middle of a movie. The only plus is that the tickets are cheap. read more

Watched the Fantastic Four with my two sons. Great old cinema and great value at $7 per ticket.

The atmosphere and decor were awesome at this cool old hotel. Dog friendly but clean. The view of the mountains from our room was great and so was being above Main Street. The windows open for a little fresh air. Kids loved catching a movie at the Art Deco styled theatre. read more

This place is really an art masterpiece. Look around at the paintings on the walls and ceilings, it has an incredible vista of art in both structure and in scene. And the popcorn is simply the best, even if it is more expensive than the dinner you had before you got there! read more

Don't come here looking for your strip mall multiplex with reclining seats and twelve screens all playing the newest blockbuster garbage- you'll be horribly disappointed. This place is much like the town in which is stands, funky and old but reasonably well kept up while offering the shadowy hints of grander times long past. Once owned by the Latchis family as part of their larger complex it is now operated by The Friends Of The Latchis and seems to be doing well. They finally got rid of the longtime manager who was a thorn in many an employee and patron's side. While they plan to put a fourth theatre in since the youth theatre relocated right now it's just the three theatres- the main one boasts a crazy but beautiful astrological wheel on it's ceiling as well as some other neat design features while other two are your standard small-ish screens. Movies here are usually more of the independent variety and are carefully chosen, though they did get to run the recent Star Wars series. Tickets are cheaper than most other movie houses in the region and the weekend matinees only run you five dollars and fifty cents. A modest concession stand has all the basics plus one claim to fame- being one of the few remaining in the country that use real butter for the popcorn. Try the brewer's yeast on it for a different take on the standard viewing fare. It's a great anchor for downtown brattleboro as a thriving community and a refreshing change from the massed-produced box theatres. read more

This adorable little historic theatre could be such a gem! While most movie Theatres try to get you in to spend money at the concession stand prior to the movie.....this one lets you in with minutes to spare before the movie starts. We went to see The Book Thief-----sign on the door warned us that doors open at 6:30 for evening shows.....but employees walked around talking to each other, unprepared until FOUR MINUTES before our movie started!! There were NO PREVIEWS..... so consequently, we sat thru the first 15 minutes of the movie with latecomers standing in front of us, waiting for their eyes to adjust to the darkness so they could look for a seat. We cold never figure out WHY IN THE WORLD this theatre always has sooo many people that arrive late-----after this experience, it's CLEAR that the locals know to come RIGHT at movie start time so they're not left out in the cold! read more
