We came here a while back and remembered liking it. Today we came in for lunch. The restaurant is well decorated inside and out. The dining area and common areas were clean and well maintained. The waitress seemed inexperienced and didn't have a friendly demeanor. The food came out in a timely manner. The steak in the fajitas was tender but had a taco seasoning taste to it. My wife said her three tacos were good. The only thing that missed the mark was the fries that came with the kids menu. No salt and just didn't taste all that good. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was frustrating from start to finish. Service was completely disorganized and confusing. Our server didn't seem to understand either English or Spanish, which made even basic ordering difficult. My husband tried to order something simple--just tacos--but was told he had to order a full meal, which made no sense. At that point, we were already irritated and asked to speak with a manager instead of ordering food. Despite clearly saying we didn't want anything, my taco salad was brought out anyway while we were still waiting. It felt like no one was actually listening. The drink situation was just as bad. I ordered a Tito's and club soda, and the server had no idea what club soda was. The manager ended up making the drink, but it was flat and poorly prepared--just tossed together with chunks of lime, seeds, and pulp floating around. It was honestly gross. Decided to stop by Las Trojans again. Upon entering, we were immediately greeted and seated. Our waiter came by immediately and asked us what we wanted to drink. While I appreciate his promptness, since I was still looking over the drink menu, I asked the waiter if he could go ahead and bring waters. He left for a few minutes and came back and asked if we were ready to order. Not sure why he didn't bring out any waters when I asked him to. So after he put in our margarita order and brought them out, that's when he finally brought our waters. I decided to order the Fiesta plate which came with steak, shrimp, chicken, rice, onions, and cheese dip. For added flavor, I added green peppers. My friend ordered the Miguel's pizza. The food was served very quickly. My dish was pretty tasty and seasoned well. I will also add, it's a lot of food. My only negative about the dish was the steak. It was somewhat chewy. My friend really enjoyed his pizza and said it tasted really good. It was a pretty decent size. All in all, good visit today. Just No.... I realize it's cinco de mayo and understand that there will be a wait and all the things that come with the busy holiday. But this was madness. They have you check in by writing your phone number in a notebook and they go down the line and call you when your table is ready. Over an hour later I go in to see where I am on the list. They SKIPPED me, and said I never answered my phone. Ok ok, maybe the service was bad and the call didn't go through. Let's play that one off. So the girl begrudgingly sat my family of 4 and we waited for service. I haven't been to a Mexican restaurant that expensive in my life, and it's not inflation because we ate a different place for lunch today. Moving on, my husband asks about the size of the Guac, waiter says it's super small and would take an hour to come out or longer because they are backed up. Bummer. Fast forward, a couple comes in a bit later, orders the Guac, 10 mins later out comes this massive bowl of beautiful Guac. Imagine our disappointment, as we sit there poking at our cold food that took a solid hour to make it to our table. Guessing by the temp of the food, it had been ready for quite a while. We ordered traditional margs on the rocks, nothing fancy. Came out with speckles of black and red stuff, and tasted like lime water. The salsa tasted like straight diabetes with all the sugar they put in it.... I wish there was something nice to say, I really do, but I'm so disappointed. I guess our waiter was nice, even though he lied about the Guac and forgot he was supposed to refill drinks. OH and they had a DJ playing dance songs so loud you couldn't hear the person sitting at your shoulder. Left with a massive headache and unfortunately it wasn't from the "lime water". The only thing great about this place is that they are open later than anything else. I had a really bad experience where the server brought us the large size of the dish but we didn't want that. Instead of fixing it they just told us to keep it. Great. But in the bill we were charged for it. I asked to talk to the manager and he was incredibly dismissive and rude. Name started with an M? Food is good. Tres leches is AMAZING. My only complaints are the quesadillas being half and not a full quesadilla. They use one flour tortilla (as opposed to two flour tortillas) and they fold it in half like a taco. Also, the tres leches slice is too small. Lastly, the tables need to be cleaned. We have been coming to Las Trojas here in Madison since they opened. The food of and service has always been top notch. Until this weekend. We came here this past Saturday night as a party of 4 to celebrate a birthday. Our waitress was inattentive (that's putting it mildly). We were seated for at least 20 minutes before she came to get our drink order. Once she had the drink order, it took 10 minutes for her to bring them to us and take our food order. No one ordered anything special -- no secret menu items or special substitutions -- but it still took another 30+ minutes for our food to start coming out (piecemeal at that -- my husband got his beans (no entree), my friend got her quesadilla, then 10 minutes later I got my chicken and rice then my friend's husband got his entree, and then about 10 minutes later my husband's entree came out after everyone else was pretty much done eating. Apart from the horrible timing of the service , wr hardly ate anything because... it was cold. All of it. The cheese on top of the refried beans wasn't even melted. She didn't seem to care. As much as I have enjoyed this Las Trojas in the past , this was probably our last visit because I shouldn't have to pay 85 plus tip for a meal and service that were terrible. read more

We ordered a pitcher of margaritas. There was a sign at the table and it stated 50% off margaritas 4-8 pm. We paid full price for this pitcher and it was all mixer with no alcohol for that price. Service was great. Drinks, including Blue Pacific Margarita and Horchata were fantastic. Ambiance was ok, but the place looks a bit worn and in need of paint and cleaning. Food was no good. Combination 23 was edible but not enjoyable. Carnitas tasted like dry dog food. The kids chicken quesadilla was 1/3 filled with cheese and chicken and mostly empty tortilla. The best thing about this restaurant was the fantastic DJ and bingo that we played throughout the night. I ordered a taco salad with beef. Let me preface it by saying that we were a party of eight. My taco salad was not delivered until about 10 minutes after everyone else's had been. When it was, it was strictly lettuce, ground beef, shredded cheese. I had to ask for the pico de gallo, guacamole and sour cream. The sour cream never was delivered. Very disappointing. I ordered w Margarita because the sign up front said that it was half price between 4:00 and 8:00pm. Because mine was frozen, at least that was the explanation that was given to me, I had to pay $13.85. Again, very disappointing. Our DJ saved the night with bingo and singo. Unfortunately we didn't win but we had fun doing that. Oh, and last but not least, I should have ordered the night's special which was under $14 and three times the size of my little itty bitty taco salad which was almost $15. Sad. read more

This place has really fallen off. I sat down at 6: 40 and the waitress did not come and take my drink order for 15 minutes. I order the Carnitas with limes and cilantro on the side.. I also ordered a side of cheese dip. It came out lukewarm with a bland taste. That cilantro is old and discolored. The Carnitas was cooked hard/burnt then they gave me maybe 3 tablespoons of beans and put cheese on top of it to make it look fuller. I think I will drive across town for a better Mexican food experience. read more

Las Trojas is our go-to Mexican restaurant but today they just didn't deliver. I was bringing dinner to a friend so while waiting for my carry-out at the bar, I thought a margarita would be a great idea. They have a long list of specialty margaritas of which I usually peruse but today I just opted for a house margarita on the rocks. I ordered the medium and was flat out shocked that it was almost $17. It was a largish glass but honestly, definitely not $17 large. It wasn't mixed fresh - it came from a large drink dispenser - one like you'd expect to see lemonade or the like dispensed from. The worst part was that the margarita tasted like Mr. Clean smells. It was awful. Just awful. The bartender never came back to check on me so I never had a chance to even comment on my drink. As for the food, I was ordering fajitas for both my friend and myself. They didn't have "fajitas for two" like a lot of local Mexican restaurants so I just ordered two orders of chicken and two of steak. With a smallish tip (while I'm a good tipper, right or wrong, With tip, my check was over $120. For 4 meals - at a basic, definitely not upscale, Mexican restaurant. I was blown away. Obviously I was shell shocked by the prices but at least the fajitas were good - the chicken and steak were juicy and tender. I can't comment on the peppers and onions - I ordered mine sans peppers and unfortunately, didn't receive the onions either. There were no surprises with the accompaniments - tortillas, ordinary rice and beans and the usual pico, guac and sour cream. The order also included a bag of chips and cup of salsa. I've never really been a fan of Las Trojas' chips - they are thick and always asking for salt. As I was driving home, I was thinking of the price of my dinners. If the four of us would have gone out together and each had a margarita, our bill could easily have been over $200. I would expect that from one of the higher end dining establishments in town, not a basic Mexican restaurant. read more

A family Mexican restaurant, the one on Hwy 53 and 255 is the one I favor. Inflation has hit them and it's hey had to raise their prices. I prefer fajitas or the Carne Asada dinners. I often order take away , ready in 15 minutes. So much food (2 can share a meal). Prior to COVID Las Trojas was extremely inexpensive, as I said inflation and Biden food policies have hit them hard. read more

First off the communication skills are bad in the service department. I can't speak Spanish and my waitress could not understand us clearly speaking English. So it was a total misunderstanding from the beginning. Somehow, one of my orders, for two chimichanga's, but what I got was fajitas dinner meal, and then soft shell small burritos with no sauce just melted cheese on top. The other order was for #10 2 hard shell tacos with rice and beans, add 1 more taco, carne asada meat. They added two extra tacos. Next thing you know a asada steak dinner with corn tortillas and the all the fixings came out. The drinks ordered were $5.99 margaritas and specialty liquor drinks $6. So we got specialty drinks and got over charged for the whole bill. Inside the restaurant was nice. Will not return because the restaurant manager was a total dick when trying to pay my bill and I pointed out the difference in what I actually had ordered. read more

I am only giving this a 4 star simply for the prices. I have never been to a Mexican restaurant and spent $70 for two people before. But I will say, the food was fantastic. I had the large Presidente margarita and my husband had the elephant foot Modelo, let me say, they do not skimp on the tequila! It was sooooo good. I wanted to try something I had seen before so I ordered the Miguel's pizza, this did not disappoint. There was so much flavor with the steak and chorizo and it was huge. The seriously could offer a half size and most people would be happy with it. My husband had the fiesta plate. He went on and on about the flavor combo. So while the prices were high, the food made up for it. They also had a live mariachi band and they were very entertaining. Horrible service and food. Went there this evening and ate there. Chicken fajitas are chopped up where you have to hunt for the chicken. Wife ordered Enchiladas supreme and waiter brought nacho supreme. Food was brought separately over a period of time. First chicken fajitas, no tortillas or other accompanying items. Then my son's food was brought and the catfish and shrimp in the taquitoes Del Mar were grossly under seasoned. Then finally my wife's food along with the rest of my fajitas. I've been here twice so far & the food is delicious. Service - The restaurant was busy but we were seated quickly. There was a bit of a wait to order etc & the drinks took a while. Our server tried his best to keep up. FOOD - The Angel's plate is a very filling burrito with ALL the meats covered in nacho cheese. If you're a meat-eater you need to try this. Drinks - I'm not sure what margarita we tried but the "green stuff" on top (lime flavor) was a hit across the table. It keeps drawing you back to the drink. read more

The manager refused to remove it from our bill even though we did not eat it and then told me I was rude for complaining. Save your money and time and don't go here. Bland. Near zero spice if any in salsa, the Burrito Grande or the shrimp entree my wife ordered. Burrito Grande on menu stated chicken or beef with red sauce. No mention of any veggies, rice, beans in any of the burritos and for good reason - no other ingredients . $16.75 for a burrito containing chicken and sauce. Same with my wife's shrimp dish, a few tortillas containing shrimp and bland sauce, as if the cook opened a can of Mexican red sauce purchased at a grocery store and called it a night. Lots of Mexican restaurants in our area, will not be returning to this one. read more
