I ordered chicken fajitas for breakfast. I am fortunate this restaurant will prepare lunch/dinner foods for breakfast. My foods were excellent. 5/5 If you are on the south side of town, please stop by El Vaquero and try their foods. This locally owned restaurant opened just before Covid and they have been working hard to build their business. 5/5

We've been to El Vaquero twice now to play trivia. While we enjoy the clean amenities and our…read moretrivia caller, both times, we've all been incredibly unhappy with our food. The restaurant is spacious and gets loud when there's a crowd. Thankfully, there's usually a place for our larger group (6 people) to be seated comfortably. Service is very nice but slow. Trivia runs for a little over an hour and both times our food has taken about 45 minutes to come out, despite our comparatively small orders. My friend who comes to trivia does like the food here (he always gets a beef chimichanga FWIW), but everyone else has now tried several different dishes and not once been satisfied or even just not unhappy. The one shining star has been the cheese dip. It really is pretty good cheese dip, lol. The first time I ordered the chipotle chicken, which is supposed to be chicken in a chipotle sauce. I was firstly surprised and disappointed to see these were small strips of chicken rather than a chicken breast. But that would've been okay...had the chipotle sauce been decent. It had no chipotle flavor and honestly mostly just tasted like sour cream. It was very weird. My parents have tried a beef burrito, beef taco, and chicken taco. They said the beef has an unpleasant metallic taste and the shredded chicken was, according to my dad, inedible. Most recently, my husband got a carne asada burrito and said it tasted so unpleasant he was concerned about whether he should even eat it. Fortunately, no ill effects came about as a result of it; he determined it was ultimately just very low quality meat with an unpleasant texture and taste. My father in law just doesn't order anything except a beer after coming for breakfast once and having a bad time there, too. On my most recent visit, I got a side of rice and beans to eat with chips and cheese dip. The rice had been cooked into sticky, mushy lumps and had no flavor. At this point, I have no idea what to order that might even come close to satisfying my palate. It's disappointing. We may be forced back due to circumstances like our availability in order for us to play our favorite game and have time together. If so, I'll continue to try different things until I can maybe someday find something that works. I want to like this place and wish I had the experience so many other reviewers have had.

Sheeesh this wasn't it for us…read more We came here last Thursday to play trivia after we missed our usual Monday night trivia engagement. We thought it might be fun to try somewhere new, but I highly doubt we'll play at this place again. Now I will say all this with the caveat that pretty much no one in our party is a huge fan of this style of Mexican food. Still, this stood out as particularly unpleasant, even to our perspective. The atmosphere is nice enough, at least; it's a very spacious restaurant with lots of seating, tall ceilings, and lots of interesting art. As others have noted, it is pretty loud inside and it can be hard to hear both waiters and others in your party. We were seated at a booth for four. Chips and salsa were forthcoming; the chips were hot and fresh and the salsa was generic but enjoyable. As is often the case, the chips and salsa were the highlight for most of us. Our waiter did not seem to speak a ton of English and either didn't understand or couldn't answer one of my mom's questions about the menu. No big deal to me or her, but something to be aware of when you visit. My mom just got cheese dip, my dad got an a la carte beef burrito and crunchy chicken taco, my friend got a beef chimichanga, and I got the chicken and vegetable plate. Our food came out in a reasonable amount of time. My mom's cheese dip was as expected but being cheese dip it was the best thing we ate. My chicken and vegetable plate was runner up, though mostly because it too came with cheese dip. My chicken was under-seasoned and the vegetables were under-cooked and extremely crunchy. The rice was okay. My buddy who ordered the beef chimichanga did not get it. The waiter delivered a chicken chimichanga and seemed confused when my friend tried to correct the order. My friend decided it wasn't worth the battle and said he'd settle for chicken. He ultimately said the chicken was weird and very dry and he didn't enjoy it. On the bright side, they left off the $2 up-charge for a chicken chimichanga on the bill, so I guess there's that. My dad said his beef burrito had little flavor but was edible. The shredded chicken taco, he said, was totally inedible and just nasty. He didn't eat it beyond the first bite. When it came time to pay, the waiter brought out a ticket for my parents and a ticket for me and my friend, despite us asking to pay separately. My friend picked up the tab and I Venmoed him later. It was pricy, at about $25 for my entree and Diet Coke + tip. An all-around frustrating and unpleasant first (and likely last) visit here. Trivia was fun as usual, but we will stick to our Monday night haunt whenever we can.

I entered the supermarket and saw a crudely made sign that said taqueria and entered a hallway with another sign that said taqueria with an arrow pointing me further down the hall. It led me to a simple room with a few tables and a smiling woman sitting at a cash register. The room was a bit spartan, but I always have said that the best Mexican food comes from these humble little mom-and-pop type places and not some plave heavy on atmosphere and ambiance. This place had cheap tables, but pleasant (though cheap) prints hanging on the wall. I took a menu and found a table. The woman came and with the same pleasant smile, she said she spoke very little English. I smiled and said I spoke very little Spanish. I was able to order with no problem by pointing at the menu. I ended up ordering five tacos. I ordered chorizo, asada, carnitas, cabeza and barbacoa. They brought me very good bean dip and tortilla chips to start with. The tacos were very good, as well. They brought a red sauce and green sauce with the tacos and both were good, though the green was pretty impressive. All in all, this was a great experience and if you find yourself in Decatur, Alabama, I would definitely recommend here.

I dropped the phone off and came home and started looking up the reviews for Mexican Express. I did a deep dive. What I read in reviews is that this magnificent little place has been in business since the 80s and has quite the following. I also was surprised to learn that many compared the food to that of the highly missed El Palacio- my favorite mexican restaurant that closed down years ago. I decided I needed to give it a go and put in our order for when I was supposed to pick up the repaired phone. I was not disappointed. If you knew el palacio you know it's not known for authentic or healthy Mexican food like people want today- it was what I'd call 80s/90s Americanized mexican. Think tons of gooey melted shredded cheddar cheese and tons of grease. Think what you want- but it was delicious ! The salsa wasn't full of chunky fresh veggies- was a thinner sauce JUST LIKE EP's. For 15 minutes today as I was eating my enchiladas with rice and cheese covered beans I was 10 again on Friday night eating in that dark cave-like dining room in a booth at El Palacio with the stucco walls and red/brown carpet before my mom and her boyfriend took me to fantasia for mini golf. The man that runs this hidden gem is also the brother of Donny from Donny's Diamonds so a well known family in the area. Also note that this place is take-out only and they do deliver locally. We were seated in about 10 minutes, which is unheard of on a night like that. The service was next level; multiple servers worked together seamlessly, making sure every table was taken care of without missing a beat. They even had complimentary snacks to build your own street corn (hands down my favorite) and gave out Cinco de Mayo glasses, which was pretty cool. I honestly can't say enough good things about this place, the food, the service, the atmosphere, all of it. La Placita is the real deal.
