The restaurant is spacious and gets loud when there's a crowd. Thankfully, there's usually a place for our larger group (6 people) to be seated comfortably. Service is very nice but slow. Trivia runs for a little over an hour and both times our food has taken about 45 minutes to come out, despite our comparatively small orders. My friend who comes to trivia does like the food here (he always gets a beef chimichanga FWIW), but everyone else has now tried several different dishes and not once been satisfied or even just not unhappy. The one shining star has been the cheese dip. It really is pretty good cheese dip, lol. The first time I ordered the chipotle chicken, which is supposed to be chicken in a chipotle sauce. I was firstly surprised and disappointed to see these were small strips of chicken rather than a chicken breast. But that would've been okay...had the chipotle sauce been decent. It had no chipotle flavor and honestly mostly just tasted like sour cream. It was very weird. My parents have tried a beef burrito, beef taco, and chicken taco. They said the beef has an unpleasant metallic taste and the shredded chicken was, according to my dad, inedible. Most recently, my husband got a carne asada burrito and said it tasted so unpleasant he was concerned about whether he should even eat it. Fortunately, no ill effects came about as a result of it; he determined it was ultimately just very low quality meat with an unpleasant texture and taste. My father in law just doesn't order anything except a beer after coming for breakfast once and having a bad time there, too. On my most recent visit, I got a side of rice and beans to eat with chips and cheese dip. The rice had been cooked into sticky, mushy lumps and had no flavor. At this point, I have no idea what to order that might even come close to satisfying my palate. It's disappointing. We may be forced back due to circumstances like our availability in order for us to play our favorite game and have time together. If so, I'll continue to try different things until I can maybe someday find something that works. I want to like this place and wish I had the experience so many other reviewers have had.

Both are fairly Americanized Mexican and Japanese dishes (think chicken and cheese on rice, and hibachi with all manner of meats and "yum yum" sauce), but it's a large menu and it had something for everyone, so it was a good fit for our quite large group. We arrived not long after opening and so they were able to seat us without any trouble -- I believe there were 11 of us total. The restaurant is large and was somewhat dimly lit but inviting enough. The bathroom was tidy despite being a little stinky. There's a large bar toward the back and it looked like there was space for dancing or musical acts. Service was efficient and friendly and patient with several party members' special requests. They also handled our many separate checks with skill. Chips and salsa came right out. The salsa was actually a highlight for me; it was surprisingly tasty and flavorful with a tiny bit of heat. Better than the average Americanized Mexican food salsa. We got a mix of items, though I think we leaned more heavily Mexican dishes. I got the Pollo Lucy off their relatively affordable lunch special menu. It's your standard chicken, cheese dip, and rice, with bonus salsa verde offered in a small squirt bottle. Although this isn't my preferred "style" of Mexican food, this was fairly good for what it was, particularly the chicken. It had a pleasant texture and was well cooked and seasoned. The rice, unfortunately, was overcooked and quite mushy and flavorless. Fortunately, that's where the copious amount of cheese dip comes in handy, lol. I liked the salsa verde and shared it with another dining companion who needed a little more umph in the taco salad she ordered. No one really raved about the food but no one really complained, either, hence the so so rating. I do appreciate the accommodations they made to ensure the two younger kids in our party would have something they liked to eat (making a plain bean burrito, serving plain cheese dip over rice, etc). However, I can swear by the fact that this proves my theory on Mexican food, in North Alabama at least, being worshipped only if it tastes like cardboard and has no seasoning. The queso had legitimately no flavor. Not even cheese. Just like table cream. It even had peppers in it but you could not taste them. This was the time where we questioned if we had caught COVID in the 10 minutes we had been in there and lost our sense of taste. I quickly learned this wasn't the case when I tasted the salsa which had the flavor of body odor and canned tomatoes. The chips, however, nice and crispy. So a plus there. Get the chips. Don't dip them. We split the chicken fajitas and the 3 minutes it took to come out after we ordered it, should be taken as a sign that it's not going to be great. The grill marks felt laughable as the chicken had no texture or flavor of something that was grilled. It, along with the peppers and onions, had a slimy texture and, again, absolutely no flavor. It seemed to me that this was a classic case of either Sysco's Finest or Sous Vide cooking. The rice on the side also had no flavor but the beans actually had a great taste, but a few felt under cooked and slightly crunchy. The stand out was the home made tortillas which we thick and fluffy. This made me question why, if you're going to the effort of making tortillas and chips in house, why cut corners on your MAIN part of the meal? As for the service, it wasn't bad but the waiter had to be asked multiple times for refills and was very inattentive to our table while favoring who seemed to be regulars behind us. Phil's has the essence of "what a Mexican restaurant tastes like in Norway if opened by a British person who had Mexican food once on a work trip to Idaho." Decor that's trying too hard, food that has no seasoning, and service that is lacking.
