Since Oscar's first opened I have the enjoyed the family atmosphere and home cooking this small chain affords its customers. I love their nachos but it's the little extras that make them stand in out. No mystery meat here. Just flavorful crunchy goodness. The pickled carrots are so good. Oscar's is not a large place but it is staff is always willing to answer you questions concerning their menu. They are located in a little strip mall just off I 65 in Athens. Stopped here during a road trip through Alabama. We were pleasantly surprised by the variety of the menu and the quality of the food. Our food arrived quickly and was yummy. The carne asada tacos were excellent, and my daughter's quesadilla was great. The garnish on the tacos was fresh and flavorful. This was a nice road trip stop. This place has all day breakfast burritos under about 10 dollars. I got the big breakfast burrito which had hashbrowns (the crispy kind), sausage, cheese and bacon. Couldn't be happier with the result. Burrito was prepared well wrapped in foil which keeps the ingredients cooked. Not as messy as I thought and definitely worth the price. I've been around Athens recently and as such I've been trying out a few of the local restaurants. Oscar's wound up being my choice for the day a few weeks ago. I thought the menu looked good before going, but sadly, I didn't have a positive experience with the food. This restaurant is pretty new and is located in a small strip mall. I understand it to be a small chain, with most locations in Tennessee. It was a little hard to get to the parking lot (had to go behind the Starbucks) but there was decent parking. They have advertised specials like deals during lunch, on certain days of the week, etc. Upon entering, you're funneled into a line up to the counter where you may place your order. The inside is slightly modern and looked very clean, including the women's restroom. The woman taking orders was pleasant albeit a little direct (mind you, though, I'm quite sensitive lmao). Their menu is pretty big but I eventually wound up with a burrito bowl as that's one of my go-tos. You can choose your protein (chicken for me) and it comes with rice, beans, lettuce, pico, guacamole, sour cream, and shredded cheese. I asked for no guac and they obliged. I also ordered a medium drink and a personal sized cup of queso with chips. They have a small salsa bar where you can get your own salsa and try many flavors. I don't remember the exact total price of my meal, but I do remember being aghast at it -- pretty expensive for what I got, or so I felt. I remember liking the salsa I got from the salsa bar and the queso, while unremarkable, was still enjoyable. The chips were fine. But that burrito bowl...blech. It had the strangest taste permeating the entire dish, an extremely unpleasant medicinal/chemical flavor. The chicken was gray and unappetizing. The rice was a little undercooked, though that was pretty much the only thing I ate because it was the least affected item from the nasty taste. And there was so much lettuce I was a bit confused thinking I'd maybe received a taco salad by mistake. I wanted a little lettuce, but this was piles and piles of it, cold and soggy next to steaming hot food. I ate a few bites of rice, one piece of chicken, and a bite of beans and decided I could do no more. One of the worst entrees I've had in a long time, sadly. 2 stars for a clean restaurant, pleasant staff, and serviceable chips and dip. -3 stars for the taste of my entree and price. read more

First visit. Oscar Taco shop doesn't serve any tea!!!!! I don't think they realize where they are. We're in the South, we Southerners drink sweet tea, I don't drink soda, and the lemonade is horrible. You have to order from the counter and then pick your food up from the counter. It's a relatively new place, it's really clean. The food was OK. My taco salad shell was semi-stale. The salsa bar was fantastic. read more

If youre from Cali this is your place for Mexican HANDS DOWN THE BEST MEXICAN SINCE LEAVING CA! We drive from Huntsville just to eat there its so good. Everyone we've referred from California says its hands down the best since leaving. This location is not like the other Oscars Taco Shop locations, its better! They have a salsa bar with spicy carrots. My husband and daughters love their CAB and Cali Burrito. I love the taquitos and regular crunchy tacos. read more

We tried out Oscars and were impressed! The menu has a great balance of classic and unique offerings all at excellent, affordable pricing. We tried the street tacos and the fajitas and both were great, and the portions were good for the price. It's a fast casual atmosphere, so you order at the counter before taking a seat. Elizabeth was the server at the register she was so upbeat and just happy to help. The restaurant itself is small but very clean and cute on the inside. The food however is absolutely the best part my husband and I have found a new favorite spot. For athens, Alabama this place is good but this is a very mid tier street taco place in my honest opinion. Prices are pretty high for what you get but not terrible food and it's gonna be better than at least 75% of the other options here in this town. The worst thing I had was there salsas were just really white washed and bland. It's like they had to dumb their salsas down to get people to eat it. My carna asada tacos were good however. I hope to see this place lasting awhile if I have to come back to the browns ferry nuclear for work. read more

I have been here 3 times since they have opened. The breakfast burritos are good. The rolled tacos are good. The smothered fries are ok but for those prices the portion sizes should be much bigger. Why am I giving you 3 stars? As I stated before, I have been there 3 times, but I have actually tried to eat there at least 3 other times, because a boy needs his breakfast burrito fix. The problem is this- if your posted opening is 7am, then why are you NEVER open at 7am?? I have tried 7:15, 7:30. What a great addition to our growing town! I've now been to Oscar's three times, and I am confident with my 5 star rating. I've had the beef taco, fish taco, beef burrito, and beef taco salad. My family has eaten the carne asada fries, steak street tacos, and house fries. All were excellent! The hot salsa is so delicious! The space is clean, well-lit, and comfortable. Everybody working there has been kind, helpful, and so quick! Very fresh, delicious, quick, and reasonably priced. I'll go again and again! read more

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures as we devoured the food. Being from California this place is pretty accurate to the food out there & on the contrary to what others have posted about the prices. I think they are more than reasonable. With the aguas frescas being an exception but the horchata is amazing so we don't mind it. So far my husband and I have tried the street tacos combo, the California burrito with fries, carne asada fries & the carne asada nachos. The women taking our orders were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Although the location is small and the parking isn't great, it's clean and the well maintained with a modern yet traditional feel.
