Coming from Denver, our standards were pretty high. But overall, our experience was great. Not overcrowded. Service was fantastic and our food was pretty darn good.

Did 3 pm supper here .. super chimichanga plate was great.. old Mexico burro also good as a std here . Salsa has just enough kick .. service was fabulous and it's your typical mex-cantina atmosphere.

Super bland food. Flour tortilla tasted raw, uncooked nor heated. The burrito meat filling had no seasoning. The rice was decent, but the refried beans tasted like canned beans. The salsa was the best part of the meal.

Date of visit: 6/12/21 Overall Rating: 4.24/5 (Score breakdown below) Old Mexico Cantina was a fantastic restaurant. I haven't stopped hyping it up to other people since I ate there. It has a little bit to work on with regards to ambience and service but I imagine that other people may have had better service experiences than I did. The food was AMAZING and the drinks were delicious. I will absolutely be returning to Old Mexico Cantina and recommending it to all of my friends. Ambience (10%) 3.9/5 The two skeleton statues bordering the front doors are a huge plus. The music was a little bit too loud and in combination with the conversation of other tables meant that I had to raise my voice to be heard by my companion. The restaurant was ~65% full and busy which made me feel like it was a popular spot to be. It did not have a ton of wall art. From our booth, I had a view of three televisions and windows to the outside whereas my companion only had a painting of a flamingo to look at. There is a bar that appears to be separate from the dining room. My recommendations for Old Mexico Cantina to receive a higher ambience rating are to have TV's visible from all seats in the restaurant, more wall art, and quieter music. Service (15%) 3.1/5 We had to wait ~60 seconds to be seated. It then took ~5 minutes to order waters and alcohol. The chips and salsa were promptly delivered right after ordering drinks. We waited ~15 minutes for food after ordering which isn't a long time but felt longer than most Mexican restaurants. This meant that I ate too many chips and salsa and had less room for my food. After eating, we had to wait ~12-15 minutes for our checks to be picked up and processed. Again, not a SUPER long time but it felt much longer than it was. At this point in the meal I was full to the point of discomfort from all of the delicious food and I just wanted to go home and put stretchy pants on and relax into a food coma. Menu (15%) 4.3/5 The menu is extensive. The drink menu was incorporated into the back of the food menu which is always a plus. Certain parts of the menu deviated from the version on the website which I never enjoy because I almost always view the menu online before my meal. Overall a solid menu although eerily similar to Casa Blanca's menu. Food (40%) 4.8/5 Absolutely incredible. The Burrito Mexicano was fantastic. It had so much chicken and Mexican sausage. The enchilada sauce had strong tomato flavor that made it feel different from other enchilada sauces that I have had. The pico de gallo was incredible and had an abundance of cilantro in it. The Burrito Old Mexico had a lot of delicious cheesy sauce and even had tomatoes inside. Chips were standard but salsa was unbelievable. During our 15 minute wait for food I consumed way too many chips and salsa. When we left, there were still chips in the basket but the salsa was almost gone. That's saying something about the quality of the salsa. Drinks (20%) 4.1/5 The drinks were good. The Margarona on rocks was delicious and strong. I'm still not sure how a Margarona is supposed to be drunk because I feel like the Corona is supposed to empty into the margarita as it is being drank but I feel like I drink the margarita and then end up with half of a Corona at the end. The frozen Strawberry Margarita was very frozen and tasted exactly as expected and delicious. The Strawberry Margarita even seemingly had small pieces of strawberry in it. That was a huge plus. I would definitely try other drinks from Old Mexico Cantina.

Thee worst Mexican food. So bland. And the beef taco was cold. I don't recommend this place. It's not old or New Mexico. It's nasty!!

This is the best Mexican restaurant in Madison. The salsa is very good and food is always tasty. I personally get the carnitas street tacos.

ORIGINAL REVIEW I stopped by and had a Cuban Papa Rellena (look it up), it was delicious but a little on the high side in pricing. Chef was a Cuban Lady and she made me feel right at home. Need to go back and eat some real food and not just an appetizer. Has the potential to be very good if it doesn't break your wallet!

I was greeted fairly quickly when I entered and guided to a seat with a menu and silverware. A few minutes later, the server (was bilingual) came out and asked for what I wanted. I received my salsa and chips at this time. The salsa was pretty watery and lacked spice or much flavor. It was nothing special, and chips seemed like they were made a long time ago. Looking at the menu, it seemed like a typical Mexican restaurant though I was a little disappointed that the street tacos didn't have many options. I was a little inclined to think after looking at the menu that it was more Tex Mex. They did seem to have a nice deal for aguas frescas with two glasses for under $3. That's pretty unheard of here in HSV. I ended up ordering 3 pastor tacos. I received food fairly quickly. The street tacos have a large amount of cilantro and raw onions, but not as much meat as I had hoped for. The red sauce served on the side wasn't very spicy and had more of a smokiness. Not sure I had the experience I wanted. I had to wait a bit after finishing my food to get my check or even see the waiter. If I come back, I'll try the aguas frescas.
