Mine and my husband's favorite Mexican place. Always consistently great. Pictured is the fiesta plate which is SO much food and so yummy. Has queso drizzled all over it and lots of rice hidden underneath. My husband always gets the angels plate which is also fantastic, lots of protein and queso drizzled. We remember when there was only one Las Trojas, on Hwy 53. At the time, we considered it the best Mexican food in Huntsville. Now there are multiple outlets, and it has gone downhill in a big way. Yesterday at the Athens location was the deal-breaker. My wife's Chile Verde plate was just OK, but she had to ask for corn tortillas, which normally come with the meal. I ordered Piquin Tacos with steak, and specified corn tortillas (in Spanish, if that matters). A manager-type came to our table to confirm our orders, for some reason. Whatever. Now, piquin is a very small chile that packs a wallop, so I expected pretty spicy. Instead, I got three different tacos - seafood, steak, and chicken - on flour tortillas with some kind of mild pink salsa. The waiter said "be careful, the plate is hot" (it was not, at all, and the food was just warm). He plunked the plate down in front of me and some rice bounced off the plate into my lap. A quick "sorry" and he scurried off. The messy pile of rice was dry and tasted like sawdust. Oh, the charro beans were very good. Adios, Trojas, there are plenty of other Mexican restaurants in the area that take pride in their product. read more

First of all, service was very good. Nice, efficient, courteous. The margaritas were spectacular! Unfortunately the food was less than mediocre. There were 2 of us and we ordered combination plates. Both included a Chile Relleno which was nice, not great. The other items on our plates were interchangeable. My enchilada was an uncooked corn tortilla with some ground beef filling and, "enchilada sauce." NOPE! The taco was probably an Old El Paso crunchy corn tortilla with the same ground beef filling as my, "enchilada." My dining companion had a "burrito," NOPE, which was a flour tortilla filled with the same ground beef filling ONLY, along with what they call an enchilada and the decent chile rellano. The relief on beans and rice are not included. The decor was stereotypical but not offensive. We stop in Athens a couple times a year and this is the first time we tried this restaurant. ***UPDATE*** 9-23-2014 - Finally found a decent dish here - try the steak tacos (soft shell not crunchy). So happy to find something with flavor here. First time in a half a dozen visits. Chips were warm but either the chips or the salsa tasted of cheese and it was salsa, not queso....hmmm. Elsa behind the bar is a delight. She has the best smile and makes the Hubs and me feel like family. So, that goes a long way. This Las Trajos is just like all other LTs, cute painted chairs and colorful interior. My guac salad was disappointing in that it had a flavorless center "aisle" of guac atop a bed of shredded iceburg lettuce. I expected the guac to be "the star" and it was a supporting act to the tomato slice, the iceburg and cojita (sp?) cheese. I didn't *get* the reason for having the shredded Mexican cheese on a guac salad, but maybe I am missing something. The side beef taco was BLAND, inside a stale shell. Soooo, I scraped the meat out and made my own "taco salad" by putting the meat on the guac salad and topped it all up with their salsa. They have a full bar (no alcohol sales in restaurants in Athens on Sundays, however), and have wine and beer. The bartender, Noel, was really nice and fun and the food is served quicker than you can "shake a stick at." So, if you want super-fast, under seasoned Mexican food, pop into LT, it's in the same strip mall as Publix in Athens. They have "live team trivia" on both Monday and Thursday, I believe and it is from 7-8 acccording to Noel. read more

This was one of the best Mexican meals I've EVER had. To start the people were so nice, polite and friendly. We had a party of 13 and our server was AMAZING. He took care of us and was on top of it. Fresh warm chips, good salsa and the queso was on point. Get a pitcher of margs... they brought us out 4 full glasses of margarita and a full pitcher. I had the fajitas and they may be the best ever. HUGE portions with a ton of flavor. The chicken, pork, shrimp, steak and chorizo was cooked to perfection. The entire meal plus a pitcher of margaritas was cheap. Great people, food and prices! My husband and I came in and was greeted with a very rude hostess. Apparently she was in a rush for something. She yelled at the girl, the one that brings you the chips and salsa when you're first seated, for some reason, then turned to us and proceeded to bring us to our table. She rushed away, threw our menus on the table and walked away. WTH?!?! Then we weren't seen by a waitress/ waiter for a bit. A waiter finally stopped by and checked on us, and so became our waiter for the night. Very nice and accommodated all our needs for dinner. I saw no ranchera sauce, just a bunch of white shredded cheese and lettuce. The meat sauce had some sort of pizza taste or something. Heck my homemade enchiladas are more authentic and good. My fiance ordered some steak fajita dish that had bacon with it lol. Who the F makes fajitas with bacon? Only in Alabama lol. Definitely was a disappointment and a was for $30 bucks. Our stomachs weren't the same either and it gave us the you know what. The proper way to make enchiladas is you don't use white cheese as "Mexican" restaurants in Alabama do. You use the yellow shredded cheese or yellow velveeta cheese and you melt them. Atleast that's how we do it in Texas with what's called Tex Mex. Also if you don't have the real spicy green sauce then don't put it on your menu. The service also sucked. Waitress never came to check on us. This is a great restaurant. Their salsa is good, chips are good and the food is good. I especially love their angel plate which is a huge burrito fried in a huge flour tortilla with chorizo spicy pork, grilled chicken, grilled steak, grilled shrimp with grilled onions. Then smothered in queso. Wow. Has a little of everything and is super tasty and just around $10. It's a full meal. The wait staff is informative, friendly and attentive. We have been coming to this los trojas for a while now but tonight was the last night. We spent $70 on two dry tacos, a quesadilla, and two margs. We didn't receive silverware until we were done with our meal and we were not informed that the prices on the menu were incorrect until after we finished eating. ridiculous. the chips taste like cardboard and the margaritas taste like straight margarita mix. will not be returning. read more

The drinks, ordered top shelf margarita and I got to choose the tequila. Great except it was made with a sugary sweet mix. Squeezed some lime into it but was still on the sweet side. Dinner was chicken chimichangas, not bad. Beans weren't hot, table salsa bland. Overall at most 3 stars, on the pricey side for Mexican restaurant. I am a huge fan of Mexican and I enjoy going to eat at Las Trojas, whether it's in Athens or Madison. So we decide to go eat Las Trojas in Athens last night, and while I was very excited about going, I wanted something on the healthier side (as healthy as I could possibly get with eating Mexican). I saw a review on here that someone had gotten Pollo Loco with steamed veggies instead of rice and beans, so I decided to try that. I was by no means disappointed. It was one of the best meals I have had while eating out in a while. It was the perfect amount of food and the vegetables were phenomenal. I did give some of my chicken to my husband, but I left the restaurant feeling satisfied and not overstuffed like I normally would when eating Mexican. Highly disappointed that I signed up for promos on their website on 1/10/19 for a Buy one Get one Half off A meal and they did not honor it because it expired 11/18/18. Didn't even realize it was expired until the server mentioned it. It's not the customs fault that you are still offering an expired coupon on YOUR OWN website. Server talked to the manager. Manager reviewed it and said no that they won't honor it. He even admitted that he's had several customers with the same coupon to come in over the last few weeks who also felt that it's wrong. To me it should have been honored because at this point it's basically click bait to get people to visit their site and being folks into the restaurant. After 40 minutes of waiting and trying to find someone that knew what they were doing, I was told that they just couldn't do it. WHAT?!?
