First of all they have parking available with handicap spots for our convenience, The service is great really friendly the wait time was awesome they're on top of everything, The food was extraordinary really good portions and very close to what they advertised in the menu, SO TASTY. The drinks were amazing on point tasty and really good size. The ambience is so familiar they really have something for every member of the family including the little ones. This restaurant is visited by me in my family quite often. It specializes in Mexican style seafood. Although I have not tried everything all the dishes seemed to be top notch. But I do have to say that it's hit-or-miss type of restaurant all the time. It has recently been remodeled which makes it a lot nicer. The ambience is pretty family friendly although they do serve alcohol. The customer service can lack at times. The waitresses tend to forget about you and don't check up on you quite often. But they do have busboys who clean your table on the regular. I always order the stuffed pineapple, seafood Alfredo fettuccine, or the Langoustines. The Langoustines come with rice, house salad, and a piece of garlic bread. When you arrive they take you a side of homemade ceviche. It averages about $15 and up per person. The food is tasty but again it depends on the chef's mood. I suggest you give it a try. read more

Such a "wOrm" experience: Yelp I love you, but there has to be a way to give restaurants such as this one NO stars for such unfortunate experiences. After today's horrendous experience, of finding a WORM in my food (yes a WORM- photo attached), I will no longer be returning. I have been coming to this Islas Maria's for approximately 6 years. I have been loyal to this particular location literally on a weekly basis, not minding the 45-1 hour commute, all because of the quality. On 12/21/17 at approx 6pm, my friends and I each ordered drinks, an order of mejillones to share and fajitas mixtas. Less than halfway of eating through the order of fajitas, I noticed something out of the ordinary within the fajitas. I used a fork to separate it and examine it on a separate plate. The "thing" was about two inches in length, curved, brownish in color, with little rings throughout, all of which indicated to being a WORM! I was completely disgusted! The waitress was polite about it and said she would show the chef. She takes the plate with her to the kitchen and shortly comes back out and was told by the chef that it was an over cooked piece of bell pepper (Chile morron). I literally laughed and told her there was no way in hell. Neither the chef nor the owner or whoever was in charge for that matter, came to even "explain" or even apologize. No I was not looking for a free meal, but the fact that only the fajitas were removed from the bill didn't make the experience any better. Uh hello I just found a WORM in my food!!!!! The waitress who initially took our order did not even come back for the bill after she took the plate containing the WORM. Guess she was just as embarrassed for trying to say the WORM was a piece of Chile morron lol. Instead, another waitress came by to pick up the bill and we then left. Yes I was PISSED, but I figured rather than making a scene at the restaurant, writing this review of my awful experience will hurt them more. I always get La bolsita, and it is so good! I live in Alsip so my commute is around 40 minutes depending on traffic, but boy it's so worth it! Oh my goodness....the langostinos will make you lose your religion. I believe i swore profusely after getting the first bite. That's how good they were. I typically order the molcajete full of seafood and a spicy michelada. The shrimp empanadas are sinful and I'm sure the chef has sold his soul to the devil in order to recreate the same flavorful fusion each and every time. I'm creole...i do roux. I know when people are rushing through seafood preparation because it's in my blood to know. Yet, there is a roux like base that is used for a lot of their seafood dishes that rival creole rouxs respectively. That's some scary shit. Mexicans have figured out how to make flavorful roux...hell, they may have made it (dare I say it)....better. It's pricey...but so worth the trip. read more

Went in today and order a charola de langostinos and a ceviche large and got a player of langostinos and when I ask they said that was it and I paid over 70 dollars for it I called a different restaurant and they said that that plate was the small one and the large was the charola and i had to call them back and the manager said he was manager in both places which means it's the same owner but yet they have "different" prices so that means if I had order from the other one on 82 and Pulaski It would've been cheaper and I would had the large order which I asked for... and the people that work there have a really nasty attitude and would go and tell their manager a different story ‍ never going back read more

I've tried several Mexican seafood places in the area but this establishment did not look appealing from the outside, so I had never given it a chance. We had a party of eight people, and EVERYONE loved their dish. We had Camarones a la Diabla, Una Mojarra Frita, Camarones Cucaracha, and the Ceviche was delicious!!! Our drinks were ok, but the food is so rich you can really go light with the drinks. We brought a cake in for a member of our party, and the service staff were very friendly about helping us set it up. Service was excellent! This place is sure to become one of our regulars!! It was Tuesday around 3:30 PM, 86 degrees outside and we expected the restaurant to be empty or with only a few customers and that was the case, there were only people on two tables. The place looked clean and decent, at least the customer area, we came in but they don't greet us, they just waited for us to pick a table A waitress had tray on hand with salsas and what it looked like chips. We move from one side of the restaurant to the other side and the waitress with the tray was following us. Finally we picked a table by a wall, but we had to switch seats on the table because there was an air conditioning vent directly under my wife's left leg. Following us was the waitress with the tray and she brought a little bowl of ceviche, tostadas and crackers, and two small cups of salsas (green and yellow). The seviche was good and the little cups of salsa raised a flag, they are going to be very hot. The green salsa was medium to high hot and the yellow was extra hot probably made with peron or manzano peppers. We place the order, I asked for the order of four shrimp empanadas and a big shrimp and octopus cocktail, the waitress asked me if I wanted the hot or cold cocktail. I never heard of hot cocktail and didn't want to venture so I told her the cold. I decided to order something hard to mess up when I try a new restaurant so at least I get an idea of the culinary taste and condiments of the place without spoiling my meal. My wife ventures on firsts tries and ordered huachinango al ajillo (garlic red snapper). For drinks it was a good michelada with 2XX for my wife and a Negra Modelo for me. The empanadas were served with a mayo base sauce and they were delicious and flavorful, the cocktail was excellent too with soft but not overcook octopus and the shrimp was ok with no too much tomato and onion in the cocktail, with very little avocado and the cilantro was missing. On the other hand, the huachinango al ajillo was really bad because it was over fried and with A LOT of garlic, the kind that comes in a plastic jar and looks like little pellets. The garlic was only on the side up of the fish and looked like it was placed directly from the jar. We were expecting a red snapper served with sweet sauté slices of fresh garlic ON BOTH SIDES OF THE FISH. At this point we were the only customers at the restaurant, my wife was trying to remove garlic pellets from the fish with her fork, but the pellets went inside the slashes, fins, and gills. I let her borrow my cocktail spoon, but finally I got up picked the fish up from her plate and shook it till most of the fake garlic fell on the plate (and on the table and my wife's jeans). But there was still the nasty flavor of garlic pellets on the fish. The 3 waitresses and the cook were just looking funny at us and after removing the garlic, my wife tried to eat the huachinango, but she couldn't. We tried to cover the fake garlic flavor with extra lime, El Tapatio sauce, made fish tacos, and even with the very hot yellow sauce with no help. I end up giving some of my shrimps to my wife so she would eat something with the white rice that came with her dinner. There was also a salad, but some garlic fell in it and it wasn't edible. Later, our waitress came to ask if everything was OK and we started telling her that it was the jar garlic and it tasted bad, can you tell....(she said OK, and started walking away) the cook..... I am a serious person and when it comes to writing reviews I try to be as honest as possible and don't exaggerate good nor bad so having said that... The food is decent but every once in a while not very well cooked, also it gets very very loud and annoying they play music like your in a club house, it seems like every waitress is more concerned in how she looks and how customers see them rather than the service they give you but I guess the BIGGEST thing that would bother you is all the people that would come to your table either asking for money just like that or trying to sell you something.. I am a serious seafood lover! I can be extremely picky when it comes to how good is prepared. I had a big meal for only being considered a small. The bad thing was the service. I am a server and I was incredibly disappointed with the service, second we were charged $16 for a tip, even tough our party was of 4 people. In Rockford we can't charge the tip no matter how many people it is, you are 100% sure that I'll be checking into that because for the awful service we got she didn't deserve more than $5. And finally they had a promotion for the summer buy one dish and the second is 50%. But it's on the least expensive meals. My food was amazing but there are things that make a person come back and due to the things that were wrong I won't be coming back. Go to red lobster instead. read more

The food is very good. We had a shrimp dish, the empanadas and the "fish nuggets". (they aren't called nuggets) The guacamole was very fresh but could have used a little more salt and garlic/onions. The service is good.... but they seem to be sad or tired. (No smiles, almost sad) The lighting is very bright fluorescent. They have live entertainers strolling around but when they stop there's plenty of TVs and a Jukebox. They have a parking lot. It was NOT crowded at all and we went on a Thursday night. The worst langostinos you could ever have. The langostinos were not clean and it wasn't prepared like most places. They might do it their own way but it's just flavorless. Most seafood spots put garlic and butter seasoning on their langostinos and this place had none whatsoever. It was just fried and overcooked. It says that langostinos are their specialty on the menu but this is by far the worst langostinos I've ever had. I'm only giving them 2 stars because we also got the paella and it wasn't bad. I was there almost every weekend. until i move to the south side,I became a client at this location. I went here on 01.16.2018, it was my child and I, we ordered the platillo of langostinos and unbeknown to us they brought us the Large charolla of langostinos..I only found this out when they brought the bill and charged me 39.95 for my platillo, When I protested the girl in charge comes up to me and states you pay this or it comes out of the waitresses pay..I informed her I was unaware and it was the waitresses fault she got my order wrong in addition I had to send the plate back 2x as it was super spicey and I had asked for non-spicey.. The girl again states you should have known, it was a large...I said I am not familiar with your food how am I supposed to know it was a large and do you really think I would order a large for my 10 year old and myself...She then stated well you already ate them so I cant take them back..I then requested to speak to the MANAGER as I still had partial food packaged as I stated before it was too much food...The girl says there is no one here...I instructed her to call the manager as I was overcharged for something I did not order....she called and was told to give me a 30% discount... I was not going to get ignorant as I had my child with me...but bottom line, when running a business "the customer is always right"..the waitress should have been reprimanded, but I think she did this intentionally as we were the only ones there...DO NOT GO HERE, THEY ARE MONEY HUNGRY AND THE FOOD SUCKS, THEY HAVE TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND COULD CARE LESS!! read more

One of my new favorite restaurants. It's small and loud and full of families on weekends and I love it. The seafood is fresh and delicious, and the margarita toro is worth the trip.
