Passion fruit margarita
Felicia D.

Mani was a great server. She was extra sweet and accommodating. We all enjoyed our meals. Mine was the shrimp taco dinner. The shrimp were fresh and still had a bite, so not overcooked. The beans were excellent! My passion fruit margarita tasted about the same as my friend's mango margarita, so pretty basic in taste but still yummy. The music was also nice, though a bit loud for a Monday night. We were yelling to speak. Overall, a great experience. We all said we would return.

We yelped this on the way home from the airport as my husband wanted Mexican. Landed here. I noted the heavy seafood as he can't eat shellfish (not dangerous just sensitive) but he saw chicken and was on board. It is a large place with big TVs. Clean and the parking at that time was good. It's in a strip mall with lots of parking with other stores but they are on the end. There is also a small outdoor seating area. We sat at the bar. They have specialty drinks of all kinds and tequilas. Lots of seafood options and a few beef and chicken. I asked if the Pasta Siren was hot and the bartender told me no. It was spicy but not inedible for me but I couldn't eat a lot as my mouth was tingling. It got to be too much for me. The garlic bread that came with was delicious. He really enjoyed the fajitas as the chicken was seasoned well and his veg charred. It was a large portion and he took some home.

I can't believe I haven't updated my review since the last one. This place has delicious food. I am glad I gave it another try. I consistently get either the shrimp cocktail or the shrimp tacos and my boyfriend gets the chicken tacos- although he tries to steal my chipotle mayo. Haha. Shrimp cocktail: They have two sizes. I tend to get the large. I usually add Tapatío lo to make it spicier and ask for tostadas. The ingredients always taste fresh. Shrimp tacos- 5/5 Holy cow! You get so many shrimp!!! I love these. They usually come with onion, cilantro, lettuce, tomatoes, and chipotle may. The churros can be hit or miss. The first time we came, they brought them out early, so when we were done eating they were cold. But the next time, they were hot and had some sort of filling- possibly dulce de leche. The only thing we don't like is the ice cream. The ice cream usually has icicles in it. It's too cold - haha. I wish they had a separate option for just more churros with no ice cream. The staff has been very sweet whether we dine in or take to go. I do recommend checking your to go; but, I recommend doing that anywhere you go. There have been about 3 times that my boyfriend came home and something was wrong - we got beans when we ordered all rice, or they gave him a different meat in his taco. The most recent was that we paid for chips and salsa and they didn't put it in the bag. Again, these are very easy mistakes, and I don't blame them. It can happen to anyone, especially when it's busy. Oh, and they remodeled recently. The floor plan is much more open. I believe there are a lot more tables. If you come here on a Sunday, be prepared for a wait. They are busy- and rightfully so, the food is worth it! I believe they have a live band too! Truly the best seafood in the area. I highly recommend it!

Thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant. The food is authentic Mexican cuisine and tonight they had karaoke. The singers sang some real classic tunes and provided great entertainment for the guests. Special Drinks are humongous and they start you off with chips and salsa.

The decor is beautiful. Place was packed. Music was bumping but no wait time. Went here on May 4 day before Cinco De Mayo and no drink specials. Nice long bar if you just want to have drinkS. I went to restroom immediately n there was urine all around stall n floor . No wonder!!EVERY table had supersize drinks. I ordered a small pineapple margarita and it was very well mixed. My meal was the Filet (tilapia) Nayarit with shrimp, rice, salad, seasoned fries and garlic bread. More than plenty. Food was tasty and picture worthy. I plan to return.

Mixed fajitas, top 3 all time fajitas in my life, I can only think of one place in Texas that rivals them but these are next level great

Amazing fajitas and top 3 all time place for them. The sauce and meat and tortillas were all perfect. I found this place by accident but will be back next time I'm in town

Great food, great drinks. The tall guy at the bar took excellent care of us. I will definitely be back. The Mama's Special was sooooo good and flavorful. I also really enjoyed the spicy margarita. Haven't had one as good since my last trip to Mexi

Authentic and Delicious!…read more I was in the area with my family, and we decided to stop in for a bite. We walked in late one Sunday afternoon and were seated promptly. Our waiter was a polite gentleman who was pleasant and affable. I ordered a mango margarita and my sister had a Paloma. The margarita appeared to have been dispensed from a pre-made container. It wasn't something that was freshly blended. It was decent but a little too sweet. I didn't finish it and ended up ordering a Coke later. My sister enjoyed her Paloma though. My mom had a ground beef taco and a chicken tinga taco. She didn't like the chicken but enjoyed the beef. My sister and I both had the rice and beans. For tacos, we ordered chicken tinga, Carne asada, and al pastor. The tacos were phenomenal. They were flavorful, tender, and authentic. The tacos are small, like street tacos, but it was more than enough. The rice and beans were also tasty. My sister didn't care for the rice, but I enjoyed it. We all agreed that we'd visit Maiz & Barrio again. The restaurant vibe was lively and comfortable. The restaurant decor is tasteful with vibrant colors and beautiful wall art. The restaurant is a decent size, so the tables aren't too close together. The bill was $116 for the three of us, which included a 22% tip.

None of the previous businesses were able to hit the mark, or last for any significant amount of time. Maiz & Barro have seemingly figured it out. There are so many Mexican restaurants in the south side ... both of the fast food variety and also the ones offering full service. However, most of the ones actually in Oak Forest don't offer table service, so it's nice to have this spot in the neighborhood. The food is a bit pricey, but the atmosphere is lively, and the service was great. We've been here a few times in the past and the food has always been good. We stopped in for lunch during this visit and we did not leave disappointed. The tacos are very good and the complementary salsa they serve is delicious. Not my favorite Mexican food in the area, but definitely good enough to warrant repeated visits.

It has a pretty simple menu of a few items or so. At least it makes it easier to choose anything. The prices are okay and the food is better than it looks. Bad thing is there's no alcohol. It's not a place for margaritas, but rather Jarritos. That's why they have to make good on the food, so you can at least get something. For meat eaters the menu is mostly for them with things like beef and chicken. There's also crazier things like tongue. It's about $8 for guacamole. Pretty much the only vegetarian thing on the menu it seems. Had a chunkiness with a light spiciness to it. The tortilla chips were crispy and simple without being burnt like at many places. For sure it's one of the many places to get Mexican food. It's located on Cicero Avenue at 137th Street. They're open until late at night so you can go when getting the munchies or something.

Fresh made chips and salsa choices were brought to the table with napkins and utensils. Rhodes chips were just right. They were made from good tortillas, crisp fried in clean oil. I could have just had that for breakfast. I needed proteins, so I chose the Chilaquiles con Huevo in green salsa. I was told the red was not spicy but can be adjusted to my liking. My eggs (2) were over easy (well executed), served over cheesy corn fried tortilla strips with sour cream, tomatoes, refried beans, rice and guacamole. I make it through half the dish. The rest was taken home and eaten the next day. Just as tasty. I have more s dishes to try and a Summer month to do it.

I love their green sauce, super tomatillo-y with a little bit of tang to it. Their red has the nice roasted flavor but isn't too killer. Their salsa is good and guacamole is nice and fresh. If you need the heat they carry El Yucateco, that's the hot sauce Mexicans use and if you need anything hotter than that you bring your own insanity sauce. I ordered the Mexican skillet which provided a more than generous portion of chorizo cooked with potatoes. Eggs were cooked overeasy and the yolk blended in really nicely. It is to be noted that their beans are really good, which sounds ridiculous but they were definitely above average. Most places will just dump them out of the can and heat them up. Same with their rice, it was flavorful and a little tomato-y, which reminds me of my mothers old recipe. My girlfriend ordered the chicken taco dinner and she really liked it. The chicken was nice and moist-- not crazily seasoned or marinated, but cooked right. My dad ordered the steak dinner and I could say the same about the steak -- nice char, easy to chew. His plate came with some cactus which I got to try, and that was pretty good; kinda tangy, nice texture. I also liked the horchata, which had a nice amount of spice to it and wasn't gritty! The service is good and I should mention that the time before we were here, they gave us a little sample of tongue -- it wasn't exactly my thing, but the fact that they let us sample it I was grateful for. Plus if you DO like tongue, it is likely very good. (It did taste good, I just wasn't a fan of the texture.) So maybe if you've got a kid or are otherwise curious about something it seems that they will let you sample at least the not-so-expensive things. This place may not be off a main road, but it is certainly not to be passed up if you need a new Mexican place.
