Our friend recommended Las Hefas for an Authentic Mexican and also Latin American Food experience. This place is located in Hays, Kansas. The owner even came out to speak to us (he knew our friend who is a local). The Mayor of Hays, Kansas was also dining here; impressive. Our friend ordered: Freshly fried chicharrones with white queso dip for the table...ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! I stay away from pork because of health reasons, but this dish was SUBLIME! We ordered: 2 Arepas filled with Chicken Plates and 1 Mexican Breakfast - Black Beans and Rice with Soft Scrambled Eggs. EVERYTHING WAS FANTASTIC! This place is great and I am happy that we visited here. I highly recommend. The freshly fried chicharrones with white queso dip is not on the menu and is a secret menu item. My peach margarita on the rocks with salt was not very strong but pretty tasty. I enjoyed every last drop. We have a great friend with great taste who advised us to come here. This was a true treat!

Seafood Fajitas

We enjoyed every bite! We had the Seafood Fajitas, Chicken Fajitas, Chips, Salsa, and Guacamole. The skinny margaritas with Fortezza Naejo- To Die For! OMG The service was top notch!

Incredible authentic, delicious food, kind and knowledgeable staff. Can accommodate vegan, gluten free, vegetarian. Great food for kids--my son loved the pupusa and platanos. We are just passing through town but would 100000% return next time we drive cross country!! Can't miss it whether you're a local or passing through. I am vegan and had such a yummy meal! Guac, salsa and chips were so fresh. Also loved the music that was playing.

Great find in this little town. Unique twist on a few items while having many traditional dishes. Good staff as well

Ropa Viejas

We were travthrough Hayes on a long road trip and needed a good food stop. Las Hefas was amazing! Excellent and attentive service. We never had to ask for a thing. Our waitress was fabulous. We both had the Ropa Vieja for lunch. What can I say, it brought me right back to when he was stationed in Cuba. Authentic taste cooked to perfection. I wish we didn't live 800 miles away, but as the song goes"I would walk 500 miles..". Thank you for a nice break and wonderful meal!

I ordered the Chili Colorado. The pork was tender and very flavorful. The homemade tortillas were a great touch. The rice and beans were very bland. I asked for a spicier salsa to add flavor. It was an upcharge. That was disappointment. The service was eh. I mentioned that it was my 1st time there and she didn't go over the menu. The restaurant is wide open, modern, and bland. I might go back but it is not a must stop destination.

I can't comment too much on the food, as I wasn't that hungry when I ordered and only had a waffle…read more The waffle was decent, However by the time I got my food, I was actually pretty hungry because it took 2 hours to get our food. This visit was one of the craziest restaurant experiences I've had to date. I'll try to abbreviate this review but here are the highlights: We started by ordering 8 waters and only got 2. Then 5 of the other waters came about 15 minutes later, along with the 1 coffee we ordered that was spilled on the person who ordered it by the waitress, who didn't apologize or offer any napkins for clean up. (We had no napkins or silverware). Two plates of food (2 of 8) came out within about 30 minutes of ordering. We then asked for silverware and napkins and about 10 minutes later the server came and dropped a pile of silverware on our table and 2 napkins for us to share. The rest of our food took another hour to come out... after we asked twice for a status update. The waitress did apologize and said she was going to give us a 15% discount for the wait but failed to actually apply the discount to our ticket. They also charged us for 2 extra sides at $4.50 each that we didn't get. We didn't say anything because we just wanted to get out of there. Do not recommend.

The Sample Room is a restaurant located on the lower level of the Midland Railroad Hotel (a…read morehistoric hotel). The restaurant got its name from the olden days when merchants traveling through Wilson would use this area to display their products or "samples". We were staying at the Midland RR Hotel and wanted to try the restaurant as well. The room has a very historic look and feel. Due to its location in the basement and the lack of modern acoustics, it was a little on the noisy side. I was thrilled that the chef's daily special was Shepherds Pie. My Irish ancestory kicked in and I had the special. The Sample Room's take on Shepherd's Pie was excellent. I also had an appetizer of Gizapaco (their take on gazpacho) which was also quite good. My wife had the Reuben with fries which was also great. The service was good, the decor and atmosphere was historic and we had a great time. Would definitely stop here again.

The Fried Pickle Appetizer was fantastic; very crispy and enough food for several hungry diners! The Pit Roast Special was pretty good, with Potatoes & Carrots - plus a Side Salad. The Bacon Cheeseburger was excellent, as were the drinks! We split the Bread Pudding for dessert and it was the crowning star; soft like pudding under a nice crust of Cinammon Bread on top! Yumm!!

My husbands drink was made incorrectly and he received some kick back when he brought that up to the bartender. We've been to several fuzzys in several states and the beer rita has never been made like this so I don't know why the bartender claimed it was how it is in the recipe book. My breakfast tacos were supposed to have (according to the menu both in store and online) eggs, pico, chorizo, bacon, cheese and garlic aïoli . They showed up a greasy tortilla filled with just meat and cheese. I had to go back up to the counter and request my other ingredients and literally just made my own tacos at the table. My husband's quesadilla was literally dripping liquid to the point that he squeezed out what he could, wrapped it in napkins and said he'd just "fix it when we got home". We ended up walking across the parking lot and dining at Applebees where we received cheaper food and drinks and MUCH better service. It's a spacious restaurant with a cute patio so not all bad
