    OFF THE BEATEN PATH ...

Hidden in a warehouse district, yet conveniently located by The Falls, "LAS DOS PALMAS" is a familiar old stomping ground of mine. An old friend of mine & I used to frequent this place back in 2003 to 2004. It was usually a decent experience back then. I have not been here too often since then, but, when I do come, it is always just to get coffee at the walk-up window outside. Walk-up window rating would be at least 3 stars. Yesterday morning, I decided to go INSIDE and sit down and have breakfast ... first time in about 13 years. And it will be my LAST time, too!! In spite of half a dozen employees on duty, nobody greeted me as I entered. I took a seat at the counter and still was not even acknowledged by half a dozen employees who walked right by me several times. I noticed that their billboard style menu was missing prices, so I looked around for a regular menu, hoping to find prices. No "regular" menus, but I did find a stack of "To Go" menus by the register. I took one so that I could at least scope out the prices. I continued to wait a while, as if I was invisible. Finally ... I was approached in Spanish (better than nothing.) I ordered their #2 Breakfast for $4.50 ... Eggs, bacon, tostada, and cafe con leche. The eggs & bacon were ok. The tostada was good. The cafe con leche was very good ... This is one of those places where they bring you the cup of milk and the mini pitcher of coffee so you can make it how you like it and add your own sugar. I like it like that. My waitress was nice. However ... As soon as I had entered this restaurant, I sensed that there was a general coldness/awkwardness/indifference in the air. I did not feel welcome. It seems that there is low morale amongst the employees. Hardly anybody smiled. You get the impression that nobody cares whether you are there or not. When it was time to pay the bill, I presented the waitress with my credit card and she informed me that there is a minimum charge of $5.00. My bill was $4.82. She asked me if it would be ok for them to charge me $5.00 instead of $4.82. (What?!) I know it's only 18 cents, but i am a principle-oriented individual. I came up with a better idea ... I told the waitress to add one dollar to my bill for her tip. $4.82 + $1.00= $5.82. Problem solved. Right? Wrong. The cashier ended up, somehow, charging a total of $6.67 to my card. (What?!) When I questioned this, my waitress brought the bill back to the cashier and, at one point, there were three employees mulling over my bill. They got out a calculator. Did some calculating. Eventually, one of the cashiers handed the waitress some cash to bring to me. She brought me $1.67. I hesitated, and my waitress knew something was still wrong. Then she brought me 18 cents. Phwew, that was mentally exhausting to deal with mathematically-challenged individuals. I left my tip and left, vowing to never eat inside ever again.

It's in our top 3 burger spots, hands down. We came to eat today to try out this place for my first time as he has been here before. As soon as I finished my burger, I told my husband I'm writing a review for this amazing place immediately! We've gone to other burger spots in Miami and I was skeptical of all the hype since other places get hyped as well but has let us down. BURGER - single smash patty (my husband had the double patty), cheese, pickles, and sriracha mayo, we added bacon. Usually I like my burger with all the fixins instead of simple, but I gave it a chance anyway and I'm so glad I did! Delicious is an understatement. The burger tasted like perfection - well seasoned and juicy. We were content and satisfied once we finished the burger. FRIES - perfect, fresh, crispy, hot fries with cheese on the side. Fries were delicious at every bite. Cheese tasted good as well. Other places have greasy fries that have a taste of the oil they use, but this place did not! Fries were PERFECT. SERVICE - Everyone was welcoming, helpful and friendly. We had a positive experience and had great service from the cashier on the inside seating area. I love the fact that they served us on REAL plates. It gave us a warm, personalized welcoming feel and almost like if it was home made. This place also sells fresh meat, pasta, sourdough bread and other items. Everything look clean, organized and well kept in cool temperatures. I definitely recommend this place and my husband and I will be back for more!

I stopped by this well-established "bakery" chain for a quick bite. I chose the Pinecrest location because I always thought it was the nicer one. Other locations, particularly Doral, leave a lot to be desired in terms of ambiance. That's not to say this location is anything extraordinary, but at least it feels like a place you'd actually want to sit down and visit. It's been a long time since I last came here. I can't remember if they always stayed open until 9 PM on regular days, but I distinctly remember that on weekends at least, they used to close around 6 PM, and that by 5:30 PM the kitchen was often already shutting down. Because I generally wake up around 2 or 3 PM on weekends, this place became impractical for me long ago. I eventually found far better options closer to home that stay open later and offer a much broader selection of bakery/pastry items, all-day breakfast, while also offering sandwiches, entrées, desserts, and just about everything else. Still, after years of rotating through the same places, my friend and I decided to venture out, especially since I had woken up "early" by my standards. We arrived around 5 PM and I was absolutely floored by the menu prices. Wagyu or not, a smash cheeseburger for $25? A seafood fettuccine for $36? At a 3.6-star corner bakery? Dishes that cost around $18 a few years ago, such as the Black Forest ham and cheese scramble with coffee and orange juice, are now effectively $24 once you add the $2 extra charge for the coffee and small orange juice that used to be included. That's a staggering 33% increase from what was already an expensive meal three years ago. And that percentage doesn't tell the whole story, because even back then their prices were already 30% to 50% higher than many of their competitors. And let's be honest: the supposedly superior ingredients didn't exactly create some unforgettable culinary experience. You'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference between their Black Forest ham and the regular ham served elsewhere. Back to yesterday's visit. I had already driven there and didn't feel like searching for another place. Plus, my usual order at bakeries is a ham and cheese croissant, and that happened to be one of the few things on their menu that hadn't reached absurd pricing territory. At around $8, it's arguably one of their better deals, especially considering that a croissant filled with Nutella or some other typical filling costs roughly the same. Granted, it's not even a traditional ham and cheese croissant like the ones found in 99% of bakeries. It's a smaller version with the ham and cheese baked inside, almost like a pastelito. So when you factor this in, it's equally overpriced. Naturally, destiny enjoys playing jokes on me. The waitress informed me that they had already run out of croissants... at 5 PM... in a bakery supposedly known for its croissants. She then explained that they had shifted "more toward their bistro concept." I couldn't help but wonder: what bistro? Adding a few wildly overpriced restaurant dishes to your menu doesn't magically transform a bakery into a bistro. It simply gives the impression that you've drifted away from your original identity. And that's unfortunate because, as a French bakery, the selection here is already surprisingly limited. Compare them to competitors like Bonjour French Bakery and the difference becomes obvious. They simply can't compete. La Boulangerie mostly offers a handful of pastries and some jarred desserts and calls it a day. As for the coffee, both Bonjour French Bakery and Crema Gourmet Espresso Bar completely outclass them. Their coffee is richer, smoother, more flavorful, their prices are more reasonable, and their menus offer a broad selection, from all day breakfast to sandwiches, entrées, as well as pastas. Which brings me to the giant sign in the middle of the restaurant that proudly says "BAKERY" and to the word "BOULANGERIE" itself, the French term for a bakery specializing in bread and baked goods. Those words have never felt more irrelevant. There's a reason this place sits at a 3.6-star average rating as of this review. Had I seen that beforehand, I never would have driven this far based solely on memories from two years ago. I have a simple rule when it comes to restaurants: I don't go anywhere with less than four stars on Yelp. This visit was a good reminder of why.
