Small little restaurant located in the Wescott neighborhood. I stopped in for lunch there recently for the first time. This is a Caribbean restaurant. I had a lunch special that was pork with yellow rice which was quite tasty and reasonable priced as well. My dinner special with a soda (Tropicola) was under $10. I'm not sure how we got here, but we wanted the best Cuban sandwich in Syracuse, ASAP. To make matters more interesting, we had never tried a Cuban sandwich, or really anything genuinely Caribbean. By the way, it turns out that Syracuse literally has infinity places to get Caribbean food. We made this place our first after some heavy pushback from Esquina Habanera. We were ordering blind, but it all felt pretty low risk. The Cuban sandwich definitely lives up to the hype. I voted for Esquina, my girlfriend voted for this one, but both are absolutely required to try. I prefer the compact feel of a grilled sandwich, but I couldn't forgive the lack of ham and mustard. Sometimes if I'm in the area, I'll stop in just for empanadas. They have the perfect duality of crispy outside, soft inside I haven't seen matched anywhere else I've tried. The maduros were an entirely new thing for us, as were plantains at all. It took me some time to make them work. You want them to be sweet, or savory, and they're almost both. The day we got these, I ate them with maple syrup, and then I contemplated for a long time if I should ever tell anybody about it. The chicken stew was slow cooked and the meat fell off the bone. Loved the flavor, and the entrée pairs well with a sandwich. I ordered this a 2nd time instead of trying something else on a later visit. It was a pretty serious violation, but the meal is that good. I also tried the Stew Oxtails for lunch. By then I had a taste for it, having tried oxtails from a few other similar places. These ones I couldn't get into. In fact, the whole meal was kind of off. The meat was very slow cooked and tender, but it was almost all bone. Even if there was more meat involved, I thought the taste was pretty bland. The rice that came with it was a blast of more of the same. It was like being overwhelmed by a taste you could hardly taste. Personal feedback aside, this place is an easy five stars. Great place to stop in for some authentic food, at least the 2nd best Cuban Sandwich in Syracuse, and a ton of options at reasonable pricing. The owners are also very friendly, I think I talk to them every time I stop in. I'm overwhelmed by the other places I have yet to try, or I'd be back here a lot more. read more

I'm so happy I found this restaurant. I wanted authentic Cuban food for a reason. I went to a local Puerto Rican restaurant (won't mention name). It was OK at best. Decent food but dry and not nearly as flavorful and juicy as this place. So of course, I'll be coming here from now on. One thing I can say is, this place makes good food. I enjoyed eating everything I ordered and do plan to return again. Two issues I have... one, I ordered an empanada and it was super cold in the middle. Like they cooked the beef, had it in the fridge and then made the empanada (I was given another one). Two, I ordered a stew beef lunch. Was I expecting a platter filled with food? No, but I did not expect 4 pieces of meat, a potato and rice for $7. If you're going to get any meal from here, just get the dinner. The lunch is a waste of money and it needs to be taken off the menu if they are going to be so cheap with the portions. Whether it's referring to "LA" girls being "Delicias" or "Las" Vegas girls being Delicias, or Louisiana, even, it's correct. Some of the prettiest girls in the world come from - or live in - LA, LV and LA. Actually in many cases, it's born and raised in LA and then living in LV or LA, CA. But this has nothing to do with the restaurant. Probably the best Dominican and Puerto Rican food in Syracuse, though there are some I haven't tried. They do all the dishes well, and in a home-made home-cooking home-style home-whatever way that reminds me a lot of La Kueva on Hertel in Buffalo, NY. The only caveat is that their prices are higher than you'd want to pay. Niagara Cafe in Buffalo, for example, charges about half as much for most of the same dishes, and is just as good, in fact, even more Delicias. I also wish they did half orders at any time of day. I'd be much more likely to come back for encores of their chicken and roast pork and what not, if they did. read more

Las Delicias is more like Los Lentos, Sosos, y Incómodos. The Caribbean restaurant is tucked away at the end of Westcott's business district. The tiny restaurant has about a dozen tables, most of which are right next the door. Every time the door opened, we were hit with a blast of frigid air. We were seated promptly, which ended up being the only thing prompt about our experience. In fact, we had to ask the waitress to take our order, pulling her away from playing with her phone. The service was cold and impersonal. Our food came out slowly, piece by piece. Sarah was served her empenadas first. Despite emphasizing that she wanted the vegan versions, two of the three of Sarah's empenadas were filled with cheese. About ten minutes later, my father and I's chicken and yellow rice came to the table. I'd sooner pay the same amount for a whole rotisserie chicken from Wegmans, than have another quarter of Las Delicias's bland chicken. The yellow rice was cold and plain. I would've washed it down with my water, ithad the flavor of a wet towel. The only pro was that the food was affordable. Lunch for four came to just over $30. I was HOPING this place would be good...which is why I tried it...I tried the empanadas...beef & cheese, chicken & cheese, & spinach & cheese. All of them were pretty terrible and were essentially empty...talk about wasting $5! Also they seemed to increase the price to $1.50, from the $1 I saw on a photo here...and they also didn't have change for my $5, which wouldn't bother me except in the sense what cafe/restaurant doesn't have change? (a place that no one goes to!) I will say that the roasted chicken and rice in the front looked...decent? But they were massively overpriced at $10 and over and I wanted to try something cheap for my first time there...sadly I was extremely disappointed with their hard rock of fried chinese food tasting shell with empty filling. It also took about a half hour for these to be (made? fried from frozen?, who knows?) and when I received them in 3 separate oily bags...it just another example of how this place needs serious help. Westcott could use a real Caribbean place that is not creepy to enter, slow, and overpriced for their extremely lack-luster food. The only reason I'm not giving them one star is literally because I feel bad for them...but I really shouldn't, because I'm pretty sure lots of other up and coming places would love to fill this spot of prime real estate in a hip college neighborhood. read more

When you enter this place, it screams authenticity. I felt transported in a land unknown to me. My strengths lie in Asian cuisine and not in that of "Hispanohablante" part of the world. I got the mofongo with a special request of "a little bit of everything." I can't quite recall the specific names of the meats I got, but I had sausages, fried cheese sticks, beef, and a cheese sauce to accompany my mofongo, which for reference is a Puerto Rico dish with fried plantains as its main ingredient. The plantains are fried then mashed with salt, garlic and oil in a wooden mortar and pestle. I was dismayed to see that my mofongo didn't look like what I expected it to appear -- I blame this on myself ordering it to-go. The taste was delightful, albeit a tad on the plain side. The sausage had the most kick, and the cheese sticks gave you a guilty pleasure you won't forget. However, most everything, including the included salad and beef was quite forgettable. A strength lies in their lunch menus, where they give you a smaller portion for only $6-8 dollars with rice. It's a great deal, and something I actually plan on trying this week. One notable downside is their menu which is written in an artistic but illegible cursive that doesn't help your ordering experience. But when in doubt, ask. read more

They have incredibly rude customer service. They did not have an item and instead of doing the right things and issuing a refund, they just told me they will not deliver my order. First, I thought okay, I'll just add things to replace it, but then they come up with a silly excuse that their delivery driver did not show up to work. I waited two and a half hours for my food and they did not have the decency to call me and inform me that they have cancelled my order. They made it seem that they could care less on whether they would want to give me service or not. I definitely do not recommend this place due to the terrible customer service I have received. This is authentic dominican/puerto rican food. I highly recommend the oxtail stew with red beans and white rice. The only dish I had that wasn't the greatest is the cuban sandwitch. The best cuban sandwitch place I know of is in nyc at 138 right near the 1 train stop in manhattan. All and all, I'd say check this place out and don't hold it to a big city standard, keep things in perspective, you're in Syracuse afterall. Enjoy! read more

I placed an order for delivery the woman on the phone was very nice & pleasant on the phone, however it took 2.5 hours to get to my house which was utterly ridiculous, on top of that my food got mixed up with someone else's which was annoying as well. The reason I gave it 3 stars is because the food was pretty fantastic surprisingly!not as great as The Bronx but still pretty good I received the penill, white rice & beans, plaintains, SW chicken & salad even though it's not what I ordered I was still satisfied. The delivery boy was very apologetic which made the experience a little better & the boss even reassured me that the food was in its way. Went there last night while in town visiting my daughter. I won't claim to be an expert on Caribbean cuisine but I thought this was excellent. We had the crispy and the sweet plantains. Both were good, the sweet were really good. Three of us had the pernil and we all loved it. The black beans were outstanding. Someone had the fried pork chop, and a cubano rounded out our table. Both got good reviews. It's not fancy but the service was very friendly. If I had a criticism they are a little heavy handed with the salt (but I like salty so it wasn't an issue). This place is near my daughter's apartment. I'm pretty sure we'll be back to sample more of the menu. read more

The closest thing to haitian griot and i think the only place out here that has it (Carne Frita) I will definitely be ordering from here again . Went to place an order for delivery over the phone and had to deal with an extremely rude woman who didn't know anything. She asked me how many orders and what my address is and then refused to deliver to me. Mind you I have gotten delivery from them before when I ordered online. I live within their delivery range so there was no reason she couldn't deliver. Then she hung up on me. Worst part is last time I ordered here there food wasn't even good. Real puerto rican/dominican food doesn't taste like that at all. There was very little flavor. It was disappointing to say the least. One thing for sure I will never order from them again. From the accent, several of the cooks are Guatemalans, as are some of the dishes. The interior is divey, and most of the food is already made and on the line. Pupusas are made to order, but the curtido and salsa that go on top were sad. The pupusa wasn't bad...a little thick with the masa to be good, but it will remind you of Salvadorean food. Mofongo was dry, rice a tad mushy and overcooked. Tamales have good flavor. All in all, they offer a good variety of Central American and Puerto Rican food. It's not fantastic, but if you haven't been exposed to this cuisine, it's something different for you to try. Prices are good and portions are large. Parking isn't fun. read more

I had forgotten how good this place is. Walked out of here with dinner for 4 for under $45. We had: guisado-oxtail and porkchop, roasted chicken. Tips: get the yellow rice, the beans, and the deep fried plantains. This place is the Real Deal: a really nice Dominican family operation. Spanglish spoken, salsa on the radio, sometimes a wait during dinner rush. If you want Chipotle style service, go to Chipotle. Las Delicias is my favorite restaurant in Syracuse, a surprise since its much younger than all the rest of my favorites. After several failed Jamaican restaurants in Syracuse, here is an East Side place for people with Caribbean roots, complete with yuca, plantains, empanadas, (I'm a vegetarian) but this kind of cuisine is much more friendly to meat eaters. It's frequented by both English-speaking West Indians and Latinos, and is a nice addition to the truly eclectic mix of the Westcott Street area (from a dive bar to Arab food to US-style classy Mexican to an arthouse theater to some dive restaurants to an intellectual bookstore to a bizarre new age shop to plenty else). Being of Caribbean ancestry myself, I love this down home Dominican cuisine, though it leaves me few options as a vegetarian. Like I said, aside from great deserts, I have little else beyond cheese or guava and cheese empanadas, tostones (a salty fried plantain), maduros (a sweet fried plantain), fried yuca (a tuber that is used similar to potatoes), and not much more. But it's worth it for me. A meat eater will have all sorts of West Indian/West African style dishes, including many stews. When this place first opened, I had a good friend who frequented it. During the first week, she even got delivery, and they remembered her. One day, that same first week, when she went to get some take out, she forgot her desert.
