On the Westside of Syracuse is a small, if not for the bright orange color, unassuming building containing a little hidden gem of Syracuse. This place has some of the absolute best empanadas I've ever had. Beef or chicken, both are delicious. They're large and honestly could be a meal by themselves. Fresh made, tender juicy meat inside, perfectly crisp, flaky, tender dough outside. Like a good amount of other city Spanish eateries, they serve mostly combo plates, where you get a choice of rice, beans and a meat. The chicken stew and fried pork are delicious. The rice and beans are a tad bland, but nothing some Cholulas doesn't fix. Their sweet fried plantains are delicious too. Cheap prices. You can get a medium or large combo plate and the way they load you up on food, a medium will probably last you two meals. Two medium combos, 4 empanadas and an order of plantains cost me just $30 today and the wife and I will get at least 2 meals each out of it. I lived around the corner from the building Jandy is in for the first 21 years of my life. It's in a rough neighborhood for sure, which I feel probably may turn off people not from the city to stopping in, but anytime I've been in, the people who work there and patrons have been nothing but friendly, so I recommend everyone give them a try if in the neighborhood. read more

My go to for Puerto Rican food. Today was not the best day to order. Basically they ran out of all their regular entrees. I did take out to make it faster but it was such a cluster that I waited 15 mins. I had to tell them check the bag that was right on the counter and it would be mine. It was there the whole time. Next time I will just walk in and go through the line. It must have been a bad day hopefully. Food was still good despite being basically the leftovers of what they had. It was only 3 pm so this should not happen. read more

I had never tried Puerto Rican food before I went to Jandy this past summer. My brother from another mother Danny is Puerto Rican and wanted my wife and I to try the food of his culture, so we did. It was amazing. Jandy is a small establishment that you'd probably never even find unless you knew it was there. Because of COVID, indoor seating is currently unavailable. But, we took our food to a local park and enjoyed it there. Sadly, I don't know all the names of the foods we ate, but I can tell you that we tried several different things at Jandy and everything was absolutely delish. If you've never had Puerto Rican food, I highly recommend going to Jandy and giving it a try. If you have tried it before, then Jandy is the perfect place to indulge in the food that you love. read more

It's alright. Reminiscent of Puerto Rican cafeteria food. It's neither good nor bad, but falls into the realm of so what. In a week I won't remember I ate here. The pricing is reasonable and it has that Caribbean vibe with no AC and a fan set askew to blow hot air around the small joint. Rice tastes boxed, although I know it's not. Chicharrones had a bit too much under-rendered fat. Roast chicken was ultra dry. Empanada, while large in size, suffered from lack of substance. You almost feel tricked, as though it had a food version of a push-up bra. Sweet plantains were spot on so I'm not angry I ate here, just won't be back. So I am on vacation this week and it was lunch time, I decided to be adventurous and head into a neighborhood most in this city wouldn't explore at any point in time in the day due to it being a impoverished area. I recently saw this on GrubHub when I was looking for some late night delivery eats the other day but since they were closed I had to wait to try it out. Today was that day. Right on the main drag through this neighborhood is not a very well marketed bright orange building no major signage or anything is this little hidden gem. Serving all the authentic Latin food you could possibly crave. I am by no means an expert on this style of food and to be honest I was expecting it to be a lot spicier with plenty of heat. But I was so pleasantly surprised at what I learned today. This is your basic order at the counter and have a seat sort of place. with large wooden tables with benches reminiscent of church pews. The building is clean and filled with the smells of the various fried foods. Spanish is the primary language spoken here but everyone does speak English as well. But if you don't speak it expect to have to ask some questions if you aren't familiar with the names of the dishes. I tried an empanada and something called a pionono. Things I was familiar with but have only had on rare occasion, and well was surprised as to what this pionono was in the Puerto Rican variety. The empanada was exactly what you'd expect, a fried shell with chopped ground beef with cheese and spices, completely delicious and apparently they make in basic beef, beef and cheese, chicken, chicken and cheese and pizza varieties. There was so much flavor packed into it, I could probably have eaten six of of those and been completely happy. Then onto the pionono, they didn't have any made but I wanted to try it so the girl behind the counter asked the "chef" if she could make me one. Shockingly enough from behind the wall came someone I'd expect to be someones grandma wearing a nice dress and a hairnet looking like she was ready to make someone's family a big Sunday dinner. She told me about 10 minutes and she could make me one. Well memory was bringing something back to my brain and the google image I saw was not what was in my little clam shell take out container. This was a fritter of sorts, so i took some of the breading off and gave it a try. It was light and fluffy and just a little sweet, so I was thinking perhaps a dessert? Took a big bite and found fried plantains and a super savory spiced hamburger mixture stuffed inside. Not at all what my memory of what this was had me thinking. But I'll tell you, it was one of the most delicious things I have had in a long while. Sweet and salty and savory all at once and it was quite filling as well. But again something i could want about six of. The prices were more than fair only a few dollars for each thing on the menu and so many more things I want to try. Nothing had too much heat, just enough really everything was packed with flavor and the staff was more than accommodating. the only reason its not five stars is because a lot of the things I wanted to try were either out, or they were unable to make at the time probably cause I got there around 130pm and it was just after a probable lunch rush where things ran out. Definitely a place I'd go back to and this place is a solid 4-4.5 star place for me. This place was great. I'd only heard about it from Yelp and am rarely in the neighborhood, but I was able to swing by recently. Had no trouble getting a parking space in their small lot, ordering was quick (everything I wanted was already prepared and under glass). Chicharrones were fresh and well seasoned, exactly what I was looking for. Same deal with the empanada, more or less - it was enormous, a little light on the beef filling, but obviously fresh and with a light but flavorful dough. There's a $0.50 service charge for using plastic here; I don't have patience for that elsewhere, but the food here is ridiculously inexpensive ($7.00 for two empanadas and the order of pork) and I'm not looking to ding a mom and pop business for that. It was clean, they had good food, and I was happy to pay a little more for the convenience of swiping. I hope to get the chance to visit again. read more

Small little walk in store type of spot. Authentic.. I got a piece of fried chicken. Was yummy I was told.. got some garlic fried plantains which was also good. Order a large thing of yellow rice.. steak and onions with a pork chop. It was authentic. I liked the steak and onions. Pork chop was fried and pretty good. Rice was more on the yellow side with little chicken mixed in. Personally I like my rice more orange and with more spice with the little condulos in them. The beans were okay. Nice and friendly people working here and good authentic food. Also a little store inside that sells PR knick knacks. We enjoy going there.

Great authentic Puerto Rican food on the west side. Reasonably priced and orders filled quickly. If you work downtown this is a great spot to pick up takeout for lunch. read more
