My wife and I popped in last night for a quick late night bite after work. I have been a regular at Las Asadas and always a fan for years just to point out. last night when I ordered I noticed the dish guy finishing up washing the roasting pan and then head straight to the line to start our order. I watched as he wiped the bubbles off on his not-so-clean apron before touching the tortillas for our order. He did not wash his hands at all! Either way, this morning she's been very sick and in serious stomach pain. She only ate there so it couldn't have been anything else that got her sick. This pisses me off because as a chef myself, I take sanitation very seriously. Whether it's fine dining or a taco stand, clean is clean and chemical cross contamination is a serious offense. Aside from a sign that says "Lavos Los manos" what is to stop this from happening again to one of your customers? Management needs to train and explain why it is important to have a sanitized and clean staff and work area. I'm very very very disappointed with you, and I hope you address this with your staff. read more

Las Asadas is my go-to spot for carne asada burritos. The delicious smell of steak travels all the way down the street, and once you get a whiff, it's hard to resist. The steak is smoky, and the beans are spot on too. Cheese and sour cream are extra, but worth it in my opinion. The green salsa has a kick but isn't overwhelmingly spicy. read more

Bring back the old Las Asadas way... Drop the overpriced tacos (almost $3 per taco), give fair prices and drop the nonesense after someone spends almost $26 on tacos about pulling out extra change for salsa negra. Remember the old Red Hot Ranch location is what brought you up in the neighborhood and not keeping up the tradition that started it, just because theres foot traffic at this location, doesn't cut it. Good meat and tacos yes but the place should be packed but theres reasons why it isn't. Change, bring back the true Las Asadas way and let the neighborhood know and its almost guaranteed the people that use to like you will give you a try again. Currently, people will drive down Armitage past Scofflaw and get a arrachera taco for $2.49 plus fresh chips and salsa or they'll go down the block and get a taco for less $. Think smart so you can further succeed. Don't take it personal because it would be supported if you made the changes! One day the senorita is giving a salsa the next she's asking for change. At $3 a taco it's almost worth opening the take out bag and just using there bottled salsa negra and just walk out. If they give two with tacos thats good but always tell the customer that they could replace one for negra. Good customer service is key especially when spending. Simple things, in this area, work too like when dining in, giving chips and salsa, if food is purchased (no food than yes charge). Next thing you know the tables will be filled and your making mucho dinero. Why hold back your profits and possibilities Las Asadas? Make changes. Show that you're worth it. This place is fire. It's everything you want and need when it comes to a legit Mexican food experience. I would recommend if you want tacos, burritos, or tortas and are looking for something simple, inexpensive, and filling. Don't let the no frills exterior fool you. When you walk through the doors, it might look pretty basic but the service is fast, the food is delicious and the staff are extremely friendly. Inside smells amazing and when you taste it, it's even better than it smells. I got the tortas al pastor which was incredible. It consisted of layers and layers of al pastor, cheese, beans, salsa, sour cream, lettuce, and pineapple for a sweet touch. This place is hella good! read more

And while the carne asada was definitely some of the better steak I've had at a Chicago taqueria, it didn't blow me away. The burrito was thrown together rather haphazardly; the contents weren't evenly distributed so you'd catch a bite of meat here and then a bit of sour cream there. WWSMS (what would Sir McCartney say)? "Come together right now," dear burrito. If you dine in, you won't get any free chips. Seems about right, as Las Asadas doesn't give off that friendly have-a-taco-and-stay-a-bit vibe. No matter - Veloz is my preferred late-night Mex joint and there's only room for one in this pastor-lovin' heart. Oh right, 'cause Asadas doesn't do pastor. Cash only? It was lunch time, I was hungry, tacos sounded delicious and I stumbled upon this place. I consider myself a Mexican food connoisseur, so this is a pretty big statement for me: These were THE BEST tacos I've ever had. I've eaten many, many, MANY tacos over the years - these were solid. It's a tiny little shack with counter seating only. The place was packed, but I was able to find a lone stool in the corner. I ordered a steak and chicken taco with avocado and an horchata. These were traditional tacos with basic fresh ingredients, but the meats were so delicious. The chicken was seasoned well, it was extremely tender without being dry. The steak was delicious, it was grilled and really tender too. The service was friendly, they have a parking lot and it's super cheap - less than $5 for my delicious lunch. It was so good I actually called some of my friends, while on the way back to work, to tell them they have to try this place. AWESOME, awesome tacos. read more

I just invented the TacoPult! Inadvertently, anyway. After a productive springtime morning of windows-down errands and shopping, I decided to stop at my favorite Las Asadas and reward myself with a few steak tacos for lunch. I grabbed three tacos, and a bottle of their finest imported Coca-Cola, far superior to the corn sludge served in the States, in my opinion, and took it all to go. Upon returning home, I had my arms full of my day's purchased goods as well as my bag of tacos and my Coca-Cola. I managed to get the door unlocked and opened, but as I stepped inside, I could feel the load starting to shift. I hurried over to the table and as gently as possible tried to deposit my entire armload of goods safely to rest. And that's when the unthinkable happened. It happened almost in slow motion. Thinking back on it, I still have trouble figuring exactly what caused this, but one of my tacos freed from the bag literally took flight in the most graceful arc ever described by a taco. I heard myself gasp in astonishment, then cry out in alarm as I saw my much-anticipated lunch speeding heedlessly towards who knows what horrible end. Wrenching myself from my horrified state, I lurched after it. But this day Taco reflexes proved faster than Man. I crashed into the table and rocked it up on two legs, my one free arm reaching, straining for taco salvation. Yet I failed. The silver-wrapped projectile was just out of reach, it's initial velocity too great to overcome. Sprawled across the table and my scattered goods, I almost gave in to despair as I watched my taco reach the apex of its trajectory. But then my subconscious physicist began laughing uproariously. Victory had been snatched from the jaws of defeat! Instead of crashing all the way to the floor in a shower of skirt steak and chihuahua cheese, I realized the impulse energy that began this taco voyage was sufficient to propel the taco all the way onto my couch, which just happened to have the perfect taco landing nest in a pile of blankets left over from my reading marathon there the previous evening. I was able to stand up and breathe a sigh of relief that no tacos were harmed in this experience, and that my lunchtime treat would carry on as planned. So what the hell just happened? How is it possible that just by placing my tacos on the table was one able to shake off gravity's smothering embrace? This is my theory: The bag of tacos when set down were actually laid perpendicular across the bottle of Coca-Cola which acted as a moving fulcrum. The weight of the two other tacos in the bag combined with a roll of the fulcrum Coke bottle provided enough energy for the bag to flip over and launch the third taco. This is only a theory of course, and I am hesitant to try and recreate this happening in an experiment. Quite frankly, I am unwilling to put more Las Asadas tacos at risk. The only other theory I have is that all the Physics in the world were being used up heavily elsewhere on the globe at that moment. Perhaps a fighter jet scramble drill, or a bungee jumping convention. I am convinced that there is a great unseen power here, and it is my duty to ensure that the TacoPult is used only for Good and never for Evil. I will guard this secret day and night with my life, and one day will unlock the mysteries of its power to usher in a new Utopian era, a new Dawn for Mankind. But until that day, that TacoPult sleeps, and all will have to be content with simply enjoying steak tacos from Las Asadas. There are several locations strategically placed throughout the Chicago and Suburban areas to be on the right ley lines when the Moment of Asendancy comes. Every one is as tasty as the last. Without a doubt, Las Asadas makes the best steak tacos I have ever had, and has continued to do so for years. When this place first opened years ago, it made great authentic steak tacos. Over time I've witnessed their service & quality go downhill. It seems like a typical thing for these little hole-in-the-wall taco restaurants to change management or ownership abruptly without necessarily making that information public in any way, shape, or form with the consumer. The public is usually only informed of this change once they are disappointed with the bad service & quality they receive, having been taken, under the assumption everything was/is still operating as usual. Most recently, I was looking to satisfy a late-night taco craving, and came here with a couple friends. The place was empty, and only one guy was working (washing dishes & manning the grill) at the same time. Needless to say, we were all disappointed when we tasted the food. The tacos we received on 01.06.2016 (ORDER # 01055) were cold, fatty, and essentially uneatable. We called 'Rosa' the manager/supervisor, and she refused to offer any sort of sensible solution, and so we offered one. We paid with a credit card, and yet our receipt says 'cash'. Looks like they're not interested in paying their business taxes, which makes me wonder what other shortcuts they've taken in their business operation. Why not just refund our credit card!? Rosa informed us that 'they didn't offer refunds', and that if they as the business owners couldn't get a credit from their meat vendor, why would they refund us for our order? OK Rosa, it's not that serious. This was an illogical arugment, and so we went ahead and asked for a food credit, and she said "we'll give you a taco or two" on the house. A taco or two!? Ha! Were these tacos? If I had never known what a taco was and someone took me here I may have been scarred for life. I got the carne asada, pastor, and lengua. Or as I like to call it Bad, Bad, and Sad. Here are some underwhelming traits of the tacos I ordered: -Oily tortilla. Not sure if it was just soaked from the greasy meat or what... -Meat was too fatty. The asada meat resembled an uncomfortable softness - like a meat flavored mashed potato. -Microwaved taco/tortilla. They put the taco (or maybe it was just the tortilla) into the microwave for like 15 seconds. Didn't know this place was sponsored by Stouffers!? At least it was hot, I guess. -Salsa bland. I mean, if it's not spicy, then at least have some fresh tomato texture like a nice pico de gallo. In this case, the salsa went 0/2. My recommendation: Walk like 200 feet and go to Arturo's (24 hr), Lazo's (24 hr) or Red Hot Ranch (open til 4am) for your taco or after-drinking fix. read more

This little shack (make no mistake, it IS a shack) has GREAT carne asada tacos. I am about to make a bold statement: they are on par with La Pasadita's carne asada tacos, if not better, and I LOVE La Pasadita. My take-out order was filled quickly, and when I got home with my little meaty delights, I noticed that they were filled with MORE meat than La Pasadita, and they were still really hot. Heavenly. I chose this place because it was highly rated, I didn't just want to choose just any Mexican restaurant because I know, this is going to be a rare occasion for me now because I just moved back to the suburbs. Only a few restaurant in the suburbs knows how to cook Mexican food. But ohhhh boy , I was wrong. Back in the neighborhood for another evening at the Map Room tavern. I may be the first person to review this restaurant in its new location. It has moved across the street from the former gas station and used car lot [2072 N.] to a storefront with two steps - one outside its front door, and another outside its inner door. (Watch your step.) The counter person here told me (in English) it had been there for a few weeks. So let's deduce that it opened here on 1 April. This venue is purportedly affiliated with the La Pasadita restaurants on N. Ashland Ave. [c.v.] I opted for its steak burrito, based upon the rave reviews for its steak tacos (and its burritos were mentioned before then). The 'standard' burrito here includes only onion, sour cream, and cilantro. So I did not have to exclude tomatoes. Additional ingredients are available as part of an option package. I took this away to the Map Room {See the photographs taken there.}. With its hot sauce, this goes quite well with a hoppy beer like Three Floyds' Alpha King - especially on handpump. The steak was chopped into bite-sized pieces before being grilled. As well as providing more flavor this way; the gristly parts of the steak are cut away and discarded beforehand. As for its taste, it was distinctly above average. Its size is average. The 'big 4' burrito varieties are $5.25. Be wary of the option packages. I give Las Asadas a soft five-star rating. Its food is good. Its service is good. I wasn't made to feel like an interloper because of my faltering Spanish. The codicil is that you need to watch out for those option packages, which I respectfully submit add a cost to your entree for not as much value. Transit options: The #49 Western bus stops 200 feet away [northbound] _all the time_. The #X49 Western Express stops at Milwaukee Ave., by the Blue Line "L" station (_*not*_ Armitage) 1 1/2 blocks away during weekday daylight hours. The #73 Armitage route (one block south) runs until 10:00 pm weeknights, and 7:00 pm weekends. The #56 Milwaukee bus runs southbound until 1:00 am, and northbound until 2:00 am. Almost all other burrito joints in the city cube the meat raw and heat it on a griddle. If you live near here and do not know, you better ask somebody! Las Asadas is perhaps the best taqueria in town! After not being here for almost a year I decided to finally go, if I knew what I was getting I would have never spent my money at this place. The size of the tacos changed, they are really small and pricey. The tortillas were different as well, these were cheap tortillas with disgusting taste. The meat was bland no flavor unless you heat it up to get some flavor out of it. The fact that this place has four stars is making me give up on yelp. The worst horchata of my life. Not sure how you mess that up because it's basically sugar water. I ordered a veggie burrito- no cilantro, no onion. I get it and it's loaded with cilantro. So I tell the girl at the cashier that I didn't want cilantro and then she looks at the cook and shakes her head and makes some smart ass comment. They give me another burrito and there is literally one little sliver of avocado and hardly any rice. Cool, thanks for the bread. Maybe the girl didn't understand what I was saying because she looks like she had been smoking tons of weed for like 10 hours prior to her shift. I had to repeat my order like three times. Ah, the meat here. Finally a taqueria that doesn't griddle their beef. The carne asada is actual skirt steak grilled over an open flame, and it definitely tastes it. Las Asadas is a tiny, tiny little shack with room for maybe 8-10 people to eat at a counter, elbow-to-elbow. Takeout is pretty quick and friendly. The menu is pretty standard, though there were several interesting items that apparently aren't offered anymore, as they were covered with duct tape (like huaraches, which would've been delicious). My burrito was very tasty, and I absolutely loved the flavor of the steak. My only complaint with the burrito in general was the beans, as they seemed to have put refried beans in there. Personally, I just don't find the texture of refried beans too appealing in a burrito. I appreciate that there was no filler rice, though. In the future, I'd like to try their carne asada tacos, which are served the way they're supposed to be: with onions, cilantro, and salsa, and nothing else. read more

A qualifier. This restaurant is simple tex-mex, so my rating is relative to other, similar places. If you want atmosphere, creative food or ass-kissing, hand-holding service, you want someplace else. That said, I first stopped in here before biking home after running errands in the area. I was suspicious at first since the place looks like it used to be a used car shack. Given its location on Western, it just might have been. Anyway, I squeeze through the entrance, which was packed with folks waiting to pick up their orders. I'd say the inside can hold five or six comfortably. It wasn't comfortable. I decided on simple chicken tacos. The girl at the counter was quick and efficient, taking my order while passing off cold drinks and food for the people ahead of me. The crowd inside amplified the heat outside, so my five minute wait seemed longer. It was well worth it though, I discovered, once I dug into the scalding hot wrappers inside my carryout bag. Oh. Hell yes. Nice HOT and tender chunks of broiled chicken, not the greasy, gristly crap inserted into most texmex in this city. Did I mention they PILE the chicken on? Along with the meat were tasty chunks of onion and refreshing cilantro. The salsa verde was fine, but probably not even necessary. The main ingredients were so flavorful, no accompaniment was needed. As a kid growing up in San Diego, I used to eat hot, inexpensive border food like this all the time. This was like returning home. After a dozen or so requests - I finally agreed to meet Marty's family for dinner this past week. Call it nerves. Call what you want - but I didnt even have to ring the doorbell. In need of something to fill my stomach late night I chose Las Asadas on Western. The tacos that night filled me not only with delicious steak and onion - but a temporary sense of belonging. Asadas has won the battle of the taco joints on Western. It wasn't a formal competition and a majority of the judging was done after midnight, but nothing beats the Asadas (steak) at Asadas. Although prices increased the quality of the food has decreased. This place has the best salsa I've ever had in my life. You MUST try the black salsa and chips.
