We attended Lars' Educate Before You Renovate workshop to get a better idea of what a design/build has to offer. I didn't know what to expect, and it was surprisingly informative. No hard sell, actually, not really any sell. Friendly and knowledgeable staff who are specifically the people you'd be working with, and a really nice showroom that reminded me of Pirch. Even Owner/Boss Brandon was on hand, who made some good points about the option to hire a design/build instead of your own architect and GC. We ended up scheduling an in-home design consultation. No charge. I'd recommend it if you're planning a remodel, even if you just have some basic questions. read more

I spoke with their design consultant , Aaliya Karolia, about doing a remodel on my small galley-style Clairemont kitchen. She told me I would be paying for more than I needed and that I'd be better off hiring a contractor on my own. I was disappointed, but appreciated her honesty. She told me I could contact her with any questions I had that she might be able to help me with. I did email her with a simple clarification question the next day. She didn't reply for about 5 days. Later, the company sent me a text saying that they were offering a $K discount on their design services. I need to respond by February 28. I was out of the country, so I emailed her indicating my interest in taking her up on their offer. She didn't respond. I re-sent the email a few days later. I have waited until now, the deadline for the offer, and she didn't respond not acknowledge my communication with her. I find this insulting. My money is just the same as anyone else's. I'm disappointed in the lack of professionalism. My thought is that unless you have a very high-$$ job for them, they won't help you. read more

**Read the full review as the initial experience was not positive but the update will show why I updated this rating: ORIGINAL REVIEW: Do not trust their "quote" because it has very little to do with the actual final quote. I worked with Lars regarding a garage to Junior ADU conversion as I needed space to care for a parent. I explained the project: Remove and Wall off the garage door, add full kitchen/bathroom and plumbing, add large window with bar countertop and I shared with my larger concern regarding plumbing and the potential need to remove pavers to replace pipes. I also shared I had a quote from another business, which I did not trust, for $80k-$100k. Lars explained the "Lars Process" of having everything selected and finalized first to avoid pivots during the remodel process and having read the reviews, I signed with them after their $100-$150k quote. I signed AND paid them $4k per their process. While many of their team members were very nice and the showroom was beautiful, we went through design meetings and planning the layout to submit for permitting for close to the three months. I had been telling them I wanted to control costs as much as possible and the following was discussed to SAVE money: They advised they would not remove the garage door but close it in, I would buy and assemble the kitchen cabinets and pay out of pocket separate from the overall Lars costs, I would hook up plumbing for sinks/washing machine, I would install finishes such as towel bars or switch plates and the exterior would not be painted. Despite trying to control costs, Lars' final quote was slightly over $215k. My overall costs would have been higher as the kitchen was not included in their quote. Their final quote was about 40% HIGHER than the high end of their quote and over 100% higher than the low end of their quote. Imagine if someone gave you a 'quote' and said they could be off 40-100%. Would you sign with them AND pay a $4k down payment? I was in disbelief as I had said many times I did not want to see and could not afford a final price "that had a 2 as the first number" and yet this final quote was given without pause. When I expressed that I was not happy about this dollar amount, I was told "remember when I said it was a quote and it could change?". Their advice was to manage the plumbing needs on my own as it would be cheaper. One thing to note about the plumbing and the pavers is that my fear was the pavers would need to be removed, ground dug up to replace the pipe which connected to the street/city sewer pipes. I shared I had plumbing work when the pavers were put in and the pipe might not need to be replaced. They had someone come out and based on the VISIBLE PIPE ABOVE GROUND, I was told the pipe underground was likely the same and would need to be replaced. I showed them the leftover pipe from the plumbing work I had done, which was the correct width needed and if I was correct it would not need to be replaced. Given the quote and the fact I felt I was not being heard about my plumbing concerns, I told Lars I would not be working with them any longer. I felt infuriated at the lack of concern regarding my concerns but keep reading because the infuriation grows. I worked with two others well reviewed competitors to get quotes. Their quotes came back nearly identical at appx. $168k, which is about $50k LESS than Lars. I signed with one and in less than a month we had a final plan submitted for permits. I found out that Lars' suggestion for closing in the garage door was actually not up to code and a foundational portion for the wall would need to be poured and when it came to the plumbing, I was correct and the pipe underground was the correct size and pavers did not have to be removed. My Junior ADU is now complete, my quote was honored 100% and given my experience, I'm also having this other business remodel my bathroom. I'll never get back the 3 months and $4k I wasted with Lars but I have the cost savings and the peace of mind that I did not continue business with an organization who gave me a completely useless quote and a less than stellar experience. Every friend, co-worked, neighbor and passerby who have inquired or admired the Junior ADU have told to not contact Lars unless they want to receive a useless quote and throw away $4k. UPDATE: After this was posted I was contacted directly by the owner of Lars and he was not only apologetic but also informative, incredibly humble and shared what his business is meant to offer which changed my feelings on this organization. It was confirmed the project manager I worked with was not operating in accordance with the Lars brand, which confirmed my less than confident feelings in her, and she is no longer with the organization. I have been made whole financially and I am very open to working with Lars in the future as the former project manager I worked with was not the best apple from the bunch. read more

The worst customer care experience. I purchased a Miele dishwasher from them, that took sixteen months to arrive (I was told four months when I paid in full for it). I've had nothing but issues with it, both the manager at Lars has dropped the ball and is doing nothing to help. As well as the Miele repairman and Miele representatives. I literally can not get a return phone call from anyone at Lars, nor Miele. read more

We did, though receive stellar service from their company's employees when I had questions regarding our current design build firm who I wish we didn't use. This is an update to my review. When Lars took on the challenge of converting our 1960's home into our idea of what our forever dream home would look like, from beginning to end, it felt as if we were the only clients they were working with. The level of professionalism and personal attention provided us by the Lars Remodeling team was remarkable! It was with a heavy heart when we decided to sell our beautiful home. Needing to relocate out of state to be with our children and grandchildren was an emotional but necessary decision. With all the unknowns of the stability of the real estate market, we were concerned about the sale of this house being competitive and sellable at its listed value. Our home was listed as "coming soon" and we received an offer above listing price two days after it went online. We believe that the beauty of our home, designed and remodeled by Lars was what made it stand out above the rest. Throughout the process of packing and getting our home ready for the new owners, there were a few things we had to repair. Accessing the warranty department by email was very easy. Communication with the Lars office was always handled in a timely, supportive and professional manner; and, any person that represented Lars Remodeling, that came to our home was polite, personable and professional. We selected LARS to remodel an entire floor of our house as an ADU for family. Throughout the process, our project consultant Jen Cavanaugh was a guide we could rely on. Her professionalism and experience were extremely helpful from the very beginning planning phase all the way through the last few items on our punch list. She sent samples when we couldn't come to the showroom, and was open to facetime and online meetings before everyone hopped on Zoom. She has even supported us with a few minor issues we've found since using the remodeled space. Jen and Matt Regole with appliances and fixtures really helped keep the focus of our project on age proofing the space for future use by "grandma and grandpa." We appreciated the long track record of reliability that came with a firm like LARS, and that our project consultant helped us navigate everything in one place: design, permit, and build. There were no long pauses in our project, even during the pandemic. read more

We had a long, tedious and difficult relationship with Lars. We moved into a new home and chose them over other companies because they seemed to have white glove service, and their project consultants are very personable and fun to work with. The problem lies in the actual service itself. We were scheduled to do several phases in a large home. Phase 1 was our upstairs and it was estimated to take 4 months. Instead it took 9 months. We very often had no idea what was going on, and the communication was awful. It was so bad that Lars ended up firing our project manager after 7 months. Everyone was very apologetic, including their vice president Brandon. But they didn't apologize by their actions: i.e. no partial refund or financial benefit to us. Just sorry. But they said if we signed on to do a phase 2 with them (for another 6 figures), and if they failed miserably AGAIN, at that point they would consider refunding us partially. We weren't willing to take that risk. Because wait, there's more. During their work on our upstairs, a huge leak began coming through the second floor down into the first floor, ruining a large section of our dining room ceiling. Lars was working directly above this, in a bathroom. Yet, they insisted time and again that it wasn't their fault and it was just a coincidence. So we had to pay a separate contractor thousands of dollars to fix it. Again, Lars only offered to cover that cost if we agreed to sign a contract to pay them hundreds of thousands on Phase 2. That was a huge red flag. And lastly, this is perhaps the most disturbing part. My wife was newly pregnant during our remodel. Lars said that their paint might smell a bit, but that there was no health hazard to us or our unborn child. However we've since come to find out that the lacquer solvent-based paint they used was potentially unsafe. It was horrendous to live through, headaches etc. But we asked multiple times if it was okay to breathe during our new pregnancy. Lars representatives said it was fine. Well it wasn't fine. And we ended up losing the baby. And now we know there was a chance that the solvent based paint contributed. We can't know for sure obviously, but the fact that there was even a chance should have been made clear to us. We are still gutted that our failure to trust our instincts could have potentially caused that little heartbeat to stop. Since then, we've had another painter working on our house with solvent based paint, and before we even asked, he told us to absolutely keep our children and pets nowhere near the area until it was dry and ventilated completely. He said it would be very unsafe otherwise. At least now we now. We received an email from the vice president at Lars stating: "I want to deeply apologize for the experience you have received from my company to this point. This is not indicative of our company and I will not tolerate this failure. We pride ourselves on our service and we clearly failed. I completely understand your frustration and would feel the same way." Sadly, that apology doesn't help us in any way, but at least he took ownership. UPDATE - The owner of Lars has apparently replied below, and contrary to his vice president, he takes zero ownership. Maybe as owner, his main job is to do damage control on Yelp? Because in our multi-year experience with Lars, this is our very first time hearing from him. Which seems a bit odd. Conveniently missing from his reply is any acknowledgement of the fact that our project manager Rick was indeed fired, and our project took 9 months instead of 4. I also don't see any mention of the water damage that occurred, which we were forced to pay for. Add that to the fact that he begins his diatribe by victim-shaming us, for losing a child, is utterly reprehensible. Shame on you sir. read more

It's been over a year since my review, and in that one year, and sorry to say, some things have gone downhill in the remodel. Door knobs and plates are falling off, multiple toilets seats are either falling off or loose. Shower head is not working right in one bath, and other small, but annoying things going on. it's been less than 2 years since the remodel was completed, these bathrooms have not been used everyday, or even on a regular basis. Every item in this remodel was very high quality, and should not be happening with so little use. My guess it was installed incorrectly in their rush to finish the job after the project was 5 months overdue. read more

He made sure the work was completed satisfactorily throughout the process. We partnered with Lars for our kitchen remodel and living room addition. From start to finish, we have been pleased with the experience, the response, and the quality Lars has delivered. We had a great planning & design experience with Jen Cavanaugh, Yvette Travers, Matt Regole, and once the project started, we transitioned to Duane Cruse who ran point on every single aspect of the build. As the project manager, Duane was respectful, on-time, and communicated often. One thing that stood out with Duane was his candidness and work ethic. It was much appreciated when we were in the process of change orders and making design decisions. The weather delayed us a few times, but it didn't stop Duane from showing up on Christmas Eve to prep our new driveway for concrete. Thanks Duane! Yes, there were issues. I'll be candid. We all want to know about the negatives and there are two issues that could been improved. For example, even though we had a pre-meeting with the electrical lead and signed off on every location, every type of switch, light, and function, the team had to return multiple times to re-accomplish what should have been done the first time. Second, the stucco color didn't quite come out right and there are visible color changes on the new stucco. It looks like a light camouflage pattern...not terrible, but not good either. We're in the process to get it fixed though. Yes, Lars ultimately takes ownership for their work, but I recognize that our issues weren't from Lars staff, which is why I'm comfortable with a 5 rating for Lars. Our overall experience was great. Our framer was awesome, the kitchen looks amazing, we love the design, and we love the place! Thank you to the Lars team. read more

We met the "Senior Project Design Consultant" at the Spring Home Remodeling show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. We explained the size and scope of what we wanted to do and we were told that if our project wasn't at least $55k that Lars wouldn't take the job. Stop wasting peoples time & let it be known that is what your minimum is, let them move to the next person at the remodeling show or here on yelp. He was also snotty. About Lar's... here is an example of how things went= upon completion of our bathroom, one mirror started to become crackled . We phoned. Months later a ( friendly) worker came to our house. Asked " where is the new mirror to install?" He had to go to Lar's office to get the mirror. Drove back to our property.. Opens the box with the mirror- shattered! Bad news is that we have 2 matching mirrors & this style .no longer manufactured. My husband figured out that one piece could be salvaged- which saved replacing both. Why wasn't mirror inspected when it got to Lar's? When all said and done, would not use again. How do I feel about Lar's? read more

Their installation team double-checked our cabinets to make sure that everything would fit before we ordered our five new appliances, which is a critical step. I made an appointment with one of the consultants and confirmed the appointment with the office the day prior. The consultant never showed up and when I called the office they were not able to get hold of him. The following day I was told that the consultant's laptop broke and that he was not able to see his schedule. I was then told a different consultant would come but at that time I wasn't interested anymore. I can't understand why the consultant did not call his office to get his schedule so that he could contact the customers and reschedule the appointments. read more

We recently decided to make an addition to our house that we had been conceptualizing for a number of years. In the past, we were never able to find a construction company that provided as the full service we desired. This all changed when we met the Lars team. Lars really brought the mail. From initial customer interface, working through design and material decisions, and finally in the construction phase itself everything went extremely smoothly. If there was ever a question about design Brandon Spann or Jessica Chappell quickly ensured the concerns were fielded and worked in an expeditious manner. Perhaps even more impressive is their communication and program management. In addition to regularly scheduled meetings for status and plan, we had complete access to our project manager, Duane Cruse, who routinely fielded the myriad of actions required to complete a project. He understood our concerns and he ensured that both Lars and their trades were aware of any constraints to the construction project. We would highly recommend Lars to anyone who has a home improvement or building project in their arena. Once again, Lars Remodeling and Design exceeded all of my expectations. Having had such a great experience the first time (early 2000's), when it came time to remodel another home (Kitchen/Living Room), I reached out to them again and again had another great experience. It all started with Jeff B. (Project Consultant) who came out to our home for the initial review of the project. Based on that meeting, a conceptual drawing was completed for us to review at Lars. Jeff consistently followed up to answer any questions I had and was extremely helpful/flexible in this process as my wife and I had changed our mind on a few things during this process. Jeff's knowledge was extremely helpful with getting this project off the ground and into the design phase. Yvette T. (Senior Interior Designer) was exceptionally helpful with the design aspect of the project. Yvette came to our home and spoke with my wife to determine how she utilizes the kitchen so that she could make the best design recommendations for us. This discussion was lengthy and proved extremely useful as our project is not only beautiful, it is more importantly super functional and meets all of our needs. Yvette joined us when making our selections (flooring, cabinets, counters, backsplash, lighting, furniture) and provided us with great recommendations. She was always available to us. Prior to the start of our project, we met Rick M. (Project Manager). Rick was onsite regularly and kept us informed/updated throughout the project. He provided recurring oversight of the onsite trades and the work they performed. We also had a regularly weekly meeting to discuss the project. Rick's exceptional ability to communicate, kept us completely informed of our project throughout the process. In summary, we had a flawless remodel that resulted in a beautiful kitchen/living room that is now incredibly functional. Like a previous reviewer, I base this review strictly on the bidding/estimation process. for our Kitchen & Bath remodel project near the College area. Our house is a relatively small one, but we fully expected that the project would be in the $40-50k range. We met Brandon Spann, "Senior Project Design Consultant" at the Spring Home Remodeling show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. We explained the size and scope of what we wanted to do and made an appointment with him. He sent us an appointment reminder the week prior in which he states that we will realize that their service in home remodeling is what makes the difference. Brandon came to our home and spent about 1.5 hours going over our project with me (my wife could not attend,) explaining why Lars was superior to many other contractors, discussing design options and elements and taking notes about our needs and wants. We did not want to give a specific dollar amount budget in order to gauge independently what such a project might cost. As he left he assured me that he would be getting back to us in about 10 days or so. As we continued our homework with other remodelers we were told by more than one that if our project wasn't at least $60k that Lars wouldn't take the job. True enough, Brandon never contacted us to let us know whether our project was within the scope of what they were willing to do (though after our time together he should have had a feel for what the project would bring, I would think.) For Lars to claim that service is what makes them better and then not invest a 5 minute phone call after taking up a significant portion of our day speaks volumes about what they believe "service" to be. Basically, if they believe it is worth their time, they will likely give you good service, but if not, don't expect much. It's not that I don't understand why they passed on us. I'm a small business owner and I understand the economics of working on a smaller project. What I don't get is why they couldn't treat us with basic respect and let us know that they couldn't accommodate us. Every time I see Jason on a commercial shucking for Lars, I find myself yelling at the TV. If you have deep pockets then they may be the contractor for you, but if you are small change, I would steer clear. read more

The rest of the review is about our positive experience with Lars Design & Remodeling. Back in 2010, my husband and I attempted to remodel our entire house, using another contractor, but it ended up in disaster due to fraudulent actions taken by this contractor. This contractor's plans never made it through the City of San Diego's approval process, so in the end we wasted thousands of dollars on completely useless preliminary design plans and we were unable to recoup the money we spent. Needless to say, this negative experience left us feeling frustrated, defeated, and unmotivated, so our project came to a standstill for over 4 years. In 2014, my husband and I felt ready to begin our home remodel process again, but this time we extensively researched and interviewed 5 reputable home design and remodeling companies. Ultimately, Lars Design & Remodeling appeared to be the company that would best suit our needs, so we went with them. We selected Lars Design & Remodeling because we were impressed with their business model. Brandon and John, the initial Lars staff we met with, both spent a great deal of time with us, attempting to create a preliminary home design we both approved of, without charging us any money up front! Lars' practice of "no charges up front" took us by surprise because the other 4 companies we interviewed all wanted to charge us between $1,500.00 to $2,000.00, just to come up with a preliminary home design. When we officially signed up with Lars, we naturally had concerns about the amount of money we were about to spend on our home remodeling project, as well as its final outcome, primarily due to the negative experience we had with the first contractor we attempted to use. But, during the course of our project, the Lars team assigned to our project, (Brandon, John, Chih, Owen, Bryan, and TC), alleviated our fears when we saw firsthand the level of experience, knowledge, expertise, competence, and professionalism each one of them brought to the table. As was to be expected with a project of this caliber, some minor unforeseen issues cropped up, but the Lars team always handled them with the utmost professionalism, patience, and to our complete satisfaction. In the end, Lars Design & Remodeling gave us a Dream Home that turned out better than we ever imagined and we absolutely LOVE our new home, we're extremely pleased! We just received the closing book for the project we had Lars do, and this is just one more example of the detail and professionalism that was displayed every step of the way (the book contains all product information, warranties, selections, permits, etc that we can hand off to buyers if we ever move). The process started with a free design consultation with Seth Larson and John Klacka, who were such a pleasure to work with, and who seemed genuinely excited to work within the somewhat unusual parameters of our project (a second story on our detached garage to add an artist's studio, storage and guest quarters). Next, we had the pleasure of working with Chih, who helped us with our selections of flooring, doors, hardware, colors, fixtures, etc. She was so attentive to our tastes and preferences, the process was made that much easier. Our project manager was Brian Wood. After working with him closely for a good six months, I have to say that he will be missed!!! He was very patient, attentive, and prompt at addressing any questions or concerns, and handled requests for changes gracefully. He also likes dogs, which is important to us :-) As others have noted, it is very reassuring to know that Lars doesn't vanish with the end of the project, but will be there to help with warranties, etc. Finally, the project came in on time and as budgeted so there were never any nasty surprises or hidden costs.
