Had it not been for the incredibly rude, flippant, uncouth service at this beautiful and delicious bar, the review would be 5 stars. I had the most bizarre night out in NY, which is saying a lot in this city, upon entering Lantern's Keep. As 3 of us walked in, the server approached us and we said we would be about 5 or 6, though 3 were currently here and the other 2 minutes behind us. We saw a table for 5 that still had glassware from a previous party and pointed to that, remarking that that table could accommodate us. The server replied, "well that is dirty so you 3 can sit at another table until your full party arrives and it gets cleaned." I then replied with, "we don't mind waiting for it to be cleaned," and proceeded to wait outside the bar while the server cleared the glasses but did nothing to clean the table. About 5 minutes later I saw him move a table of 2 to another part of the restaurant to accommodate us by pushing tables together, which I thought was generous. We sat down, perused the lavish drink menu and gave our order to a noticeably annoyed server...same as before. He was young, hip, and seemed approachable...boy we were wrong. After waiting for about 15 minutes for our drinks, which we know is being made by a knowledgeable mixologist, receiving backhanded remarks regarding the kitchen being closed after asking him about the food menu, asking him about choosing between two drinks oand being bombarded with dry, unhelpful comments about what to not order, telling us that he will get to a single water refill when he finds the time and asking him about ANYTHING in general, our friend got up and walked over to him to confront him about his bad attitude. I must admit that my friend is a tall dude, a love able puppy-dog and the sweetest guy around. He's a regular on a huge TV show and was my youth group director at church 10 plus years ago in LA. He just saw me in my Broadway debut and we were out celebrate our reunion. He wouldn't hurt a fly and was standing up for his friend, our number 6 to join. We finally received our drinks right after he joined our table and asked about the status of his drink after waiting 15-20 minutes after he order and received a comment along the lines of, "other people were here before you who need their drinks so you have to wait." Why the rudeness? Anyway, after my friend returned from a hopeless encounter, the server approached us and told us the drinks were on him and asked us to leave because he felt unsafe. WHAT?!?!? Unsafe?!?! I am a 29 year old woman, about 120 pounds, who is having a drink (mind you we were sober) with friends from junior high and church camp, who are now actors on TV, on broadway and a major WB executive who are threatening a server with a request for more water? I have never in my life been more appalled by the gaul, tact, and service of a professional. I was a server for 10 years and always try my best to be the incredibly respectful to anyone in food service. This was my first time here and my last. I work at a Broadway house and frequent after show spots. This one was recommended by a cast mate. I can't help but spread the word of this horrific service. I can only hope management speaks to this individual regarding the matter and try their best to mend their reputation. This place looks lovely and the drinks are stellar but nothing is worth feeling treated like scum when all you did was walk in to have a good time and a great experience. Shame on this guy. What a disappointment. read more
