I guess my husband should have looked at YELP reviews before he randomly decided that our family was going to up and go to Lanier Island Resort. From the looks of the website, this place looks great! Since I'm the type that likes SPACE, I was very much drawn to the townhouse situation (2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, plus kitchen), so we booked one of those for 3 nights. The price was pretty dang affordable and we realized WHY after we arrived. First off, don't go to Lanier Island Resort in April. A lot of the "fun" amenities are closed, and the weather isn't always inviting (for us it was 62 degrees as a high and windy). Secondly, don't go to Lanier Island Resort if you think this Game Changer place is going to be epic like the photos depict it to be... It's nothing more than a few electronic games that steal your money... They do have a golf simulator area but we didn't even notice it until we were leaving. Honestly, I felt kind of dirty just being in the Game Changer building. Third, if you're looking to stay in a place with character, well, the townhomes don't have much at all. I can't really complain because our townhome came with the space I wanted for my husband and two boys, but my husband is always looking for uniqueness when we travel and these homes were nothing special. This place is kind of funny to me. Some aspects seem really nice (the main lodge, the golf...) and then other aspects feel super trashy (Game Changer, Margaritaville...). My family and I arrived on a Thursday evening and by Friday morning... We decided that we didn't need to stay 3 nights, so thankfully without being penalized, we were able to cancel our third nights stay. We truly couldn't have gotten out of there fast enough. Not sure if we will be back in the summer when things will actually be open (because I'm sure it's much more enjoyable), but for now, we will just stay away.

My first time in this area and it's stunning. Check out the pictures, enough said. I know some folks who live here and was wondering why they were suffering such a long commute to the airport since they travel so much...now I know.

We had a good time here. When we got there the checked our temperatures before entering the park. They also check you bags upon entry for food or drinks. We did have to pay to enter the property as well as the "beach" area. There were a good amount of people there but we just kept our distance. The staff wore mask except at the bar. Their daiquiris are so delicious! We had to purchase another before we left! The water felt great. We think the beach are, plus they have food and music so it's a great vibe! We will go back!

5 stars***** for a beautiful well kept property We stayed in the villa. Bathroom was gorgeous, bed was very comfortable. Rustic, charm. Was great to have a kurig machine! Room was clean food was sparse. Need additional food options for when staff is unavailable or short in the lodge. STAFF!!! Staff was kind, and polite Staff member Robert went above and beyond after we departed to make sure my AirPods (left in the room) were returned to us. WATERPARK!!! & beach are lovely. We were at Lanier island for my brothers wedding. So we were pretty busy with wedding events like the rehearsal dinner, brunch on Sunday. This is truly a gorgeous location for weddings! Photos were beautiful !

I have been to Black Bear Lodge twice and the first experience I had was fairly good, but the…read moresecond was terrible. I Checked into detox on a Wednesday to start the medical process and when I was cleared on Saturday by the doctor I was not moved to a cabin as promised. Instead I was kept in the detox facility that was a loud and rambunctious atmosphere. The problem is that the women stay in the lodge during detox but the men come in and out for medication and to reside in the common area. It was not a serene atmosphere at all. At one point a male patient knocked on my door asking to come in and it sent me into a mental spiral when I was already in such a bad place mentally. Patients were fighting and there is only one RA in the building at the time that cannot manage the large amount of patients in one space. Several times inappropriate comments were made to me by men which made my mental situation even worse. I was there to heal and I was stressed out because I could never get answers from the staff which there is not enough of. Too many patients and not enough staff to meet your needs. I was also promised before committing to come that once I was medically stable I could have access to work on my laptop for a couple of hours on my school. That never happened and when I asked multiple times I was promised it would. Bottom line is that they do not follow through with their commitments. I never saw a therapist nor was I able to attend any classes for therapy when I was medically cleared to because of a huge lack of communication between the medical staff and therapy team. When I told the RA's, "hey I really need some help can I speak to someone they would simply respond go to the nurses station for medication." When all I needed was a therapist to talk to which was impossible to get an appointment with. So basically I laid in bed for 6 days crying in a dark room because I was not able to leave the building. It made my mental state so much worse that I finally called my husband to come and get me discharged on the following Monday. My husband had to call multiple times to try and have changes made for me until we finally gave up and left. This is not a place of serenity or healing atmosphere at all. The staff does not care about the patients needs because they are so run thin. Men were obnoxious to me, RA's were rude, therapist never met with me when I needed help. The doctor that cleared me never had a written order put in so I missed any class time and was trapped in a detox space. So if you want to be just another number this is your spot. They take in more than they can handle, have terrible communication among their teams, and just treat you like just another addict. I was in such a terrible place in my life needing help and I could not get it there at all.

There is a spa, a beach, a waterpark, a luxury resort and good times @ Margaritaville. You can rent jet skis, go horseback riding, charter a fishing boat, rent a house boat, go camping or take a hot air balloon ride nearby. It was created by the completion of Buford Dam on the Chattahoochee River in 1956, and named for Confederate Army poet Sidney Lanier. Its primary purpose was for flood control and water supplies and has a water volume of about 1,049,400 acre-ft. The narrative will tell you its construction destroyed more than 50,000 acres of farmland and displaced more than 250 families, 15 businesses, and relocated 20 cemeteries along with their corpses in the process. But I want to pause here and dive a little deeper under the surface of its waters and introduce you to: [ OSCARVILLE, GEORGIA ] "The truth is rarely pure and never simple." ― Oscar Wilde Lake Lanier is partially located in Forsyth county. It is a county that prided itself on not having black residence so much that Oprah came to film an episode of her Emmy Award-winning talk show here in 1987 (trigger warning): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WErjPmFulQ0 The show makes mention that "no black person had lived in the county for 75 years", which was a direct reference to a predominantly African-American community known as Oscarville. It was home to 1,100 black people prior to a racial conflict in 1912 which was so brutally violent that it caused blacks to flee the county... even those who were landowners. "According to Elliot Jaspin, a historian and journalist quoted by the Digital Library of Georgia and the New Georgia Encyclopedia, only about 24 of the nearly 40 Black landowners in Forsyth County at the time were able to sell their land. The other properties have no record of sale, and some believe the abandoned land was simply taken by White residents." - The Times Oscarville began as a small farming town around 1870, but after so many fled the county in 1912, it was practically a ghost town. Those still claiming ownership of their land either had it seized or were "asked" to to forfeit their land to build the Buford Dam by Newport Dam Development according to an article published on April 6, 2021 by The Signal. Prior to the violence, Oscarville was actually known for its agricultural prowess in fighting off the boll weevil infestation that hindered many farm crops and enriching the soil with chicken feces. A technique that has been duplicated to this day to revive poor farming/gardening soil. "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored." ― Aldous Huxley [ MUST WATCH ] Link to Oscarville | The Town Submerged by Lake Lanier (Intrigued Mind): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifMKfBO_R6s [ FINAL THOUGHTS ] Lake Lanier is a beautiful lake and a rich resource for Atlanta. It provides approx. 70% of the drinking water for Metro Atlanta as well as power, recreation and businesses. But there is more than what meets the eye as you look across its glistening surface. An entire town is buried by its waters and has been nearly forgotten, and the hard truth is this is not an isolated story. There are several other towns across the country who suffered the same fate. They include: Kowaliga (Benson), Alabama Seneca Village In New York City Susannah, Alabama and Vanport, Oregon The story of Lake Lanier and Oscarville will be featured in an upcoming TV series called Oscarville - Below the Surface.
