The original Roxbury Mercantile was a country store owned by the Barnwell family that served the Edisto Island and St. Paul's Parish communities for nearly 80 years before burning down in 1983. Today, it's been brought back to life as a restaurant but the Barnwell family (yes the same OG family) has kept the old country store feel to it which I loved. The place was PACKED when we arrived for dinner, but we were somehow seated almost immediately. I ordered the Cheshire Heritage Pork Chop (it was sweet tea-brined, hickory smoked and finished with Roxbury Gold glaze) and a side of mac & cheese and butter beans. SO good. The butter beans were a little so so but everything else was absolutely delicious and didn't have a bite left once I through with it. The only detractor was the service. Our server seemed a little overwhelmed, and a few requests were forgotten so we occasionally had to flag down another employee. Nothing that ruined the experience though.
