Lammes candy closed on May 9, 2026...a sad day for Austin and a sad day for our family. For more than a century, Lammes Candies have been supplying candy to the Austin, TX metroplex. This small candy shop on Airport Blvd (also locations were in Round Rock & Lakeline mall) was filled with many family memories. Their Texas Chewie Pecan Pralines were a tradition for our family especially during the holidays. When we lived in Washington state for about seven years, and every time we came home, we would take back the Texas Chewie Pecan Pralines to folks in Washington state and some for us too. Smile. We liked that the box had Texas written on it, which gave us a great sense of Texas pride. In addition, at Easter we always purchased the pastel-colored thin mints and at Christmas the red and green thin mints that literally melted in your mouth. Importantly, we would occasionally go by Lammes to get an assortment of candies to snack on. It felt like there was an unlimited amount of choices of this delicious candy. Lammes candy was founded in 1878 and family run since 1885. This cute little candy store was an Austin institution! It was Austin's oldest operated family business and a source of pride for Austinites. Its signature Texas Chewie Pecan Pralines introduced in 1892 was one of its most iconic candies along with the chocolate and caramel Longhorns. In April 2026, Lammes announced it would begin winding down operations after 141 years, identifying rising ingredient costs, labor expenses, and long term sustainability challenges as reasons for their closure. The Round Rock location closed on April 24, 2026. The Airport Boulevard flagship store remained open temporarily until Saturday, May 9th (our last visit) to allow for final purchases. RIP...almost. After stuffing ourselves silly at Quality Seafood just across the street, we thought that it would be a great idea to stand in the hot sun to get some chocolate. Unbelievably, we had never been here despite living so close, and since they're closing we felt obligated to go in and try it. The place has been around since 1-8-8-5!! We probably didn't get the most legitimate experience because of the crowds. We waited outside for 20 minutes and then inside for another 20 minutes just to be able to get some chocolates from the counter. The whole situation seemed a bit discombobulated and parking was a nightmare, but everyone around us was in a good mood and chatty, so the atmosphere was pleasant. Some of their items are lame, like repackaged watermelon sour patch kids for $9 (!). But of the chocolate from the case that we got, all were really good: the truffles and chocolates are not Big City good, but for a sweet lil shop on Airport Road, no complaints. We also stocked up on a couple boxes of their famous Longhorns and pecan pralines. We asked about merchandise and they didn't have any currently in stock, which was kind of a bummer because we're not planning on going back. Liam's candies has been around for 140 years! This is the mothership location. It's still rocks. Their locally made candies or delicious and uniquely their own. This time of year brings request for family favorites the chocolate bowls and cherry sours, along with the longhorns and pecan pralines all simply delicious. Other times during the year they have chocolate covered strawberries they sell by the dozen, which were just incredible. If you have not experienced slams, you need to check them out. Iconic candy store. After 141 years of business this Austin gem is closing. I have been in Austin since 1975 and this is a tradition. As my kids got older, they assumed the responsibility of getting me my beloved chocolate strawberries every Mother's Day. I can't say I ever missed the occasion to enjoy them. I went today to get my last. I preordered 5 dozen and by God, I will make sure there is not one left. There is no other business that makes them as delicious. Staff there have always been the sweetest. And the candy store itself is so quaint. I am beyond words for the loss. True fans showed up in droves to visit and purchase for the last time. I love me some Lammes. Now this was an adventure to get here. I had assumed the one in Lakeline Mall was still open, but it's not. I drove to the Anderson Lane location, but no. I'm like, what's going on? Then I remember this location, which I actually thought was the warehouse, but I went anyway. Imagine my surprise when I glanced in the window to see all the chocolate on display. I think I even did a little laugh when I walked inside. I think the lady who worked there thought I was crazy and quickly asked me if I needed any help. I told her I wanted my chocolate-covered pecans. I would have gotten more goodies, but the lady in front of me was purchasing the whole store. So I just bought a bag of my favorites and said I'll be back. read more

Lammes is one of those old school Austin institutions that all too often gets passed by. While out shopping for gifts for hard to buy for in-laws, I decided to stop into Lammes for their signature longhorn chocolate candies. The ladies were so kind and welcoming and happy to help me with choosing a gift. There was staff actively filling boxes by hand, which goes to show how much love goes into each box. Their selection is great, with lots of options for hand-picked assorted boxes, as well as a ton of pre-packed and sealed boxes. read more

I was extremely disappointed in everything I bought. First I love their candies, I worked Ed for one of their commercial accounts. The candy was always fresh and delicious. It was my best friend's birthday and I wanted to surprise her with her favorite6 from there the Longhorns. I got her that and I purchased a bag of the malt balls/milk duds. Both were stale. Went and exchanged and my friend informed me a little time later that they were also stale. read more

Came in for some Dark Chocolate Longhorns for a gift. The shop is small but well kept and full of delicious chocolates. Staff were cordial about filling the order and set it down in a paper bag to pay at the counter. I politely requested a small box and was told boxes were only available if I bought enough chocolate to fill the box. (Really? My order fell short by a couple pieces but seemed a strange requirement after $17 in chocolate) okay...politely: ..."Can I pay for a box?"- "No" ..."management rules." Finally it was deemed okay "but just this once" ...Okay, lesson learned. Important: to protect the overhead on a small empty $.30 box and make the customer feel unimportant and cheap- Not important: letting all customers know we appreciate their patronage and grateful they choose to gift their confections no matter the size of the order. I'm a quick learner and don't mind sharing what I'm taught. read more

Lovely selection of chocolates and candies! Many of the boxes are ready to give as gifts, but you must get some for yourselves! Their chocolates are known internationally and with good reason. Lammes Candies is such a cool place. They the best pecan clusters which I've always called Longhorns. I'm not sure if Lammes coined that term but I know they use it. Every time I've been here the employees seemed to be having an amazing time and couldn't wait to help me. It's almost like something out of Willie Wonka. The last time I was here I was on the way back from my daughters swim lessons and she asked for a lolly pop. I happened to see Lammes out of the corner of my eye so we whipped in. Stumbled upon this gem while on our way to another meal. We were greeted warmly by the manager and she was quick to explain how the candy is made on premises and has been for a very long time! We were given a sample of the praline and instantly fell in love. We selected a ton of candy and chocolate, in addition to the pralines and were on our way. All of the flavors were delicious. Really like the coffee toffee chocolate, as well as the champagne truffle (so rich) and the caramel chocolate was to die for. A lot of the products are made with nuts here, which makes me happy. The combination of the crunch and the chewy sweetness really made me feel satisfied. I will for sure come back here....plus they also ship! read more

30 years ago I was a regular customer here because as a college kid, I couldn't afford full-price Lammes candies -- none of us could!! It was NEVER a problem finding someone with a car to transport us from Jester. The shop was a friendly and clean place with good prices and lots of discounted selection, and it is the same today, even though I don't have to confine myself to the 50% off seconds and mislabels anymore. Lammes makes the best caramel of any candy maker anywhere, and if you haven't had it or can't get it, I'm sorry. :( That's a tragedy. Is there anything better than Lamme's Candies? Is there anything more Austin than Lamme's??? No, no there isn't. Candy, candy, and more candy. I love their gummy fruit slices. They were my favorite as a kid but a rare treat...nostalgia at it's finest. If you ever get a chance to grab some chocolate covered strawberries, do it. They're seasonal and difficult to get BUT it will change your life and raise your standards for such items. Grab a chewy pecan praline. This is my go to treat for out of town friends. It never disappoints and for $1.20 a piece, can't hardly beat it. Better than a post card, for sure. read more

I have bought holiday gifts here for over 20 years, but this year I will be looking for a new, local business to support. I stopped in today to buy some pre-wrapped candy boxes, and I waited in line to check out while the two clerks inefficiently walked around wrapping gifts and doing mailings for the few customers before me (tip: have one clerk check out customers ready to go, and one do custom wrapping and mailings, otherwise, why even bother with pre-wrapping?). They never acknowledged us in line, even as people behind me left in frustration. After about 20 minutes, my child asked a clerk to use the restroom. She was told to walk down the street to the car dealership and ask if they had a bathroom. She is 5 years old. They have what must be a 10,000 square foot building. We were in line to buy over $200 worth of candy. I was flabbergasted, and I asked the clerk myself if she had a restroom for my 5 year old to use. She said no. We left without completing our purchase, feeling completely unappreciated and frustrated. For a place that sells so many items for children, they sure seem to not actually want children or families in their store. read more

Lamme's was like finding something awesome on the Discovery channel. Due to various health issues, I can no longer eat refined sugar. Bring on the sugar free treats! Lamme's has an entire row of sugar free candies in their display counter. My friend and I always have to try and restrain ourselves from getting too much since the prices are very reasonable. But the best part of all is that Lamme's sugar free chocolates don't give you that "run for the border", so to speak, experience. My friend talked to the woman who is usually working the counter and she said they only use maltitol in their sugar free items and don't add other sugar alcohols, which is apparently what the companies they sell, at say, the local drugstore, use. My stomach never wants to beat me up after eating the Lamme's candies. I've especially enjoyed the raspberry jelly, chocolate covered cherry, peanut butter truffle and the macadamia caramel cluster, all sugar free. No, it's not health food, but it's a great treat. read more

Lammes is twice as old as Kegg's Candies. As I read the history, I learned that the founder lost the business in a game of poker. Someone was really bluffing when they offered that in the money pot. Fortunately, the family regained ownership of the business, his son purchased the business from the new owner for $800 bucks. I could tell at a quick glance that the color scheme inside must be red and white just like Kegg's Candies. A few snaps of the camera, I was eagerly grabbing the door to enter to a world of sweets. Counter after counter contained neat rows of assorted chocolates. I decided to conduct a little experiment to compare the flavors of Lammes Candies to Kegg's Candies. The friendly hostess was kind enough to let me charge my camera battery in an electrical outlet while I gazed at the merchandise. The wall on left featured small stuffed animals, like beany babies. The rows featured prepackaged chocolates. Behind the counter, a large section of gifts featuring Long Horns colors and symbols, given its proximity to U of Texas it doesn't surprise me in hindsight. I had a positive surprise after the hostess rang up my order. My total was less than $4.00. I was expecting to pay twice that. I have been to so many chocolatiers in the Houston area. It's so easy to pay $2 per truffle. The Taste Test Results: How did it stack up against Kegg's Candies? 1. Orange, it was subtle flavor with pale orange creamy interior 2. Amaretto, barely noticable flavor yet very decadent treat. 3. Cherry, I tried Strawberry in its place, fushia color medium flavor I tried another one for fun. The chewy sweet coconut center of the coconut chocolate reminded me of an Almond Joy. And I like almond joy, so this treat was nice. Though the flavor of Lammes Candies chocolates were less intense in flavor than Kegg's Candies, I still loved the place, the candies, and the history. It is almost unfair how good the chocolate strawberries are from Lammes. I've been eating them nearly all my life. I rarely miss an opportunity to purchase them since they only come around a handful of times annually. I really think Lammes has perfected the chewy pecan praline. There are so many ways to make a praline, and Lammes variety is my favorite. I could go on for pages about how much I love Lammes candies, but it's not necessary. Lammes is an Austin institution. So many stores and restaurants that use to represent Austin are long gone. Fortunately, Lammes is still around. I'll always love Lammes, and you can count on seeing me there on a Thurs, Fri or Sat when their choc strawberries are on sale. Lammes is a classic candy store known for their nutty, carmely, chocolaty, Longhorns. Can you tell I'm a fan? One of my other favorites at Lammes is their truffle selection. I think they had about a dozen options so you'll find one (or a dozen) that you like. They also have a ton of other candy selections, gift baskets and stuffed animals so you put together a present for any random occasion. i don't really care for pecans and pralines. I went in to purchase pecan turtles to bring back to Hawaii as gifts. the clerk explained that the pecan pralines are the best sellers so i purchase 1 candy just to try and ended up changing my purchase to many boxes. pecans are crisp and light -- i guess it must just be super fresh because i normally don't care for the aftertaste of pecans but this didn't have any. I recently went here to get presents for grad school references. I hadn't ordered anything from a candy store before, so naturally I had a TON of questions and a rather unusual situation where I am shipping to multiple people in multiple states. The staff was extremely courteous and answered each of my questions, often running to the back to find information out for me. They never got exacerbated and were friendly, patient, and professional the entire time. To top it off, they allowed me to taste the different chocolates that I was ordering. Growing up in Texas, I can say that pralines are not usual my favorite thing. Their Chewy Pecan Pralines are amazing. Not to sweet with a chewy caramel-like consistency, they were a great gift item.
