I see people go in and out of the Lamar's donuts on Johnson and Woodson and the other morning. I finally had a few minutes extra to pop in and grab it done it. I ordered three different types of donuts. The two ladies that were there acting like it was an inconvenience to wait on anyone and then I was completely flabbergasted that the donuts were cold and almost wet: they definitely aren't made in that storefront and I don't know if they were frozen or just refrigerated, but they were disgusting and I threw all of them away despite the astronomical price do not recommend whatsoever read more

Don't expect any frills here. Lamar's is all about a delicious donut without any concern for being trendy. There is a reason that they've lasted for nearly a century in Kansas City and have been one of my favorite places for a donut the majority of my life. The donuts are okay, but absolutely NOT worth the awful treatment and bad hygiene of the employees. I'd rather go anywhere else for donuts and be spoken to with courtesy than continue going back to Lamar's in Mission and hope that this time whoever's behind the counter is in a good mood, is wearing gloves, has her hair pulled back, and she's not on her phone or smacking her gum and spraying spit all over the food. The woman today was the worst and has made me decide I'm done with Lamar's. She was gum-smacking loudly, getting visibly annoyed when I was asking questions, and playing with her "Coco Chanel" earrings while I was deciding. A group of 2 families came in after me and she started talking to them while I was still ordering - like a whole conversation, not just "welcome in." Then while I was paying, she walked off and continued talking to the other customers. My card transaction finished and I had to reach over and retrieve my receipt from the printer myself because she was just done helping me, apparently. (I love feeling like my business is not valued.) I turned around, tried to leave through the exit, and found it was completely blocked by a cart while the front door was blocked by 7-8 customers. I looked at the employee, hoping she would also observe that I was trapped and take some sort of action. I hoped that, as the employee, she would remove her cart from blocking the exit, but she just stared at me like I was the problem. Not wanting to cause a scene, I turned to the family, excused myself, and apologized for having to forge my way through the middle of them, while making my way to the front door. Over the past several years, I've had many, MANY unpleasant experiences at Lamar's in Mission, but I keep going back because I keep telling myself they're isolated incidents. They're not isolated, though. Bad service happens every single time. In a nutshell, the food is average and the employees are horrible. You can get donuts anywhere, it's the SERVICE that either keeps customers coming back or drives them away. read more

I had a very disappointing experience at this donut shop this morning. There were two employees working and one of them was sitting down on FaceTime with someone, using vulgar language the entire time. it was very unprofessional and uncomfortable to witness. This store smells like mold. The donut case was dirty, foggy, and so dark you could barely see the donuts. They had almost no lights on in the store. The glazed tasted day old. The (pudding) cream filled chocolate coated long John was as delicious as I remember them always being. I'm glad that has not changed. The filling was substantial and they didn't scrimp on the chocolate. It was pricey though (over $4). I'd rate that long John as 4 stars. The small round sour cream old fashioned with chocolate icing was a small, round, old fashioned donut (I'd estimate it at 1/4 to 1/3 the size of the long John). It was ok, nothing to write home about. What shocked me was the price of that little thing--$2.20! You'd think it would be epic or huge for the price. It was about the same taste as a QT old fashioned donut. Because of the price, I'd rate it at 2 stars, and that's being generous. I know prices of all ingredients and running a biz have gone up... but dang. Good thing I was feeling rich that day and needed some comfort food. I was in the area and decided to pop in at about 9:30AM and to my amazement everything behind the glass looked so fresh and delicious! I've gone to Lamar's since the original store in midtown. Now they're all across the country. Their donuts are delicious but $2.89 plus tax for a single glazed donut is absolutely ludicrous.....some of their stores charge $3.37 a piece... that's over $36 a dozen with tax. I drove a short distance and got 3 HOT glazed donuts at their competitor for $5.79. That's $1.93 a piece. Not that they care, but they have lost a customer for life....won't EVER go back. read more

Love these donuts! I like donuts with a fluffy texture that makes it feel like I am actually eating something rather than those airy ones made of pure sugar I love the staff they are always very nice when you come in and will get you in and out the door. The line is usually pretty long, so the earlier you get there the better. I got there at about 8:50am and there were 4 people ahead of me, but I only waited one minute. After I left I saw the line form and they got through it in a flash. Whatever donut flavor that you want, they got. I typically get the glazed donut, but can only eat one because they are so rich and thick. Today I got the chocolate frosted donut and it was great! Texture was mushy, not soft/doughy like most glazed, but like both overdone and underdone at the same time. Taste was like something had contaminated the oil. I'm an actual local guide that works hard for my blue collar money..I live in Merriam KS. Nothing but the truth.. Almost $9 dollars with tax for two specialty Donuts & a pint of milk.. You overloaded your cooler, Or the employee was to lazy to face the cooler, the milk was tepid at best..The health department would probably violate you.. Not to mention you charged me more for a pint of milk than Aldi or Walmart charges for a gallon.. Service was good, The gentleman was a nice guy.. The specialty Donuts: I used to go to LaMar's because it's the only place I can get white filling instead of custard.. The 2 long johns were put together sloppy.. When you spend nine bucks on two donuts and a milk you want filling!! three bites in, no white frosted filling.. it was the equivalent of center-cut bacon.. I had to tear off the ends of the Long John just to enjoy the middle of the long john. Unfortunately I didn't enjoy it, because even though I was there at 6:40 am of Oct.4 2019 the Long John tasted day-old, it was beginning to stiffen, certainly not soft & fresh.. For such a small space, they are making it work and comfortably during covid. They only allow two customers in at a time and the employee was getting it done! She was efficient and quick while being very polite in a short amount of time. Its nice that you walk through one door and exit out another so you're never overlapping or squeezing by anyone. Everyone would always rant and rave about Lamar's Donuts when I moved to Kansas City, saying that they are amazing, and are a great local staple, blah blah blah. The mission location of Lamar's Donuts is really close to my house, so one Sunday morning, I decided to try them for myself. I went into the microscopic-sized shop, which was just big enough to fit the long line inside it, and waited while young couples still in their PJs (like me), fathers, and others picked out bear claws, chocolate donut holes, and whatever else. I got a sprinkled cake donut (my favorite) and an 'old-fashioned' style donut. The employees seemed to be husband and wife, and were very organized considering the full house (which was seriously like 6 people). We settled ourselves into an assembly like system and the husband was very polite and friendly as he rang up my order. So..I got home, poured myself a huge glass of milk, and took a bite. Total letdown. I just paid almost $3 for 2 regular-sized donuts and there wasn't fireworks in my mouth?! Instead there was dry donut in my mouth, that had to be washed down with milk in order for me to swallow it. The flavor wasn't what was gross, it was more the texture and lack of moisture in the donut. Maybe Lamar's is more a localized (midwest) business than Krispy Kreme. But I'm going to tell you right now, I'd rather pay twice as much and drive twice as far (which I do) for a Krispy Kreme donut than go to Lamar's Donuts. Lamar's needs to step it up, and not just depend on their franchised household name to carry their business along. read more

I had been visiting this location at 5901Johnson Dr., Mission, KS after dropping my daughter off for school back in April/May of this year.  The donuts are really good. I enjoyed visiting with the employee that was almost always working. She told me she had worked 11 or 12 days in a row without having a day off.  I felt so sorry for her and considered writing the owners after that visit.  Businesses are still struggling to hire employees so the strain on them might be forgiven, but the owners should have come in to give that poor employee a day off,  There is no excuse for treating your employees that way. In addition most of those visits I never wore a mask, but social distanced on the occasions where there were other customers.  I came one morning and was glad to see there was another employee there to help the regular employee I was used to being waited on.  This additional employee saw me, approached the regular employee and had a brief conversation.  After which the regular employee asked me if I had a mask.  I replied that I didn't.  She then refused service to me.  There were no customers in the store, just these two masked employees and me.  I didn't argue I just left, drove to QuikTrip where customers are not required to wear masks and my patronage was welcomed.  I have enjoyed many donuts since from QuikTrip and have not nor will I ever return to this LaMars location.  The way staff is treated and the way I get treated by staff ultimately dictates where I spend my money. I give LaMar's donuts 5 stars and the management of this location 1 star. read more

When I got home I found that they had tossed in about 5 extra donuts from what I ordered. Today this horrible person at work brought in 5 dozen of the sugary calorie laden treats. Oh what joy filled my mouth as I consumed not one but two doughnuts....along with a quart sized ziplock baggie of carrots. Do you think it will cancel it out? But I digress. This place is okay. I hate Krispy Kreme with a huge disgust. However, this place will have to do for now until a Dunkin' doughnuts or something similar opens here. I grew up eating in Cafe Du Monde and McKenzie's back in NOLA. Cafe Du Monde is of course world-famous for it's celestial, almost divine beignets. (Reminds me, I got to include this place on my list of New Orleans reviews!!!) Also, McKenzie's was a locally owned chain of doughnut shops that sold buttermilk buscuts. I could eat those all day long. Who needs meat? So anyway, enough blah blah. Lamar's is McKenzie's Kansas City except for the fact the doughnuts are nowhere near as good. The pro's of them is that when they are hot they are extremely soft and tasty. In most cases, they will (literally) melt in your mouth. The drawback to them is they do lack a little bit of substance in the middle. I also wish that brew of exceptional quality would be offered there. Awesome donuts from their Apple Fritters, chocolate knot and fruit cake donuts. It is amazing and the folks at this store are usually very nice. The problem that I have that forces me to give them a low rating is that I am a customer service person that is usually tough on places. I had one issue with them on their buy 12 dozen get one free card, their specialty dozens are more expensive and I bought 12 of them and went to use my card and they would only give me a non-specialty dozen. It cost me close to 220 dollars to get the free dozen. Anyway, I emailed their customer service department with my complaint and didn't even get a "we will get back to you in 24 hours" BS you might of expected. I still go their but opt for Johnny's Space Age whenever I can. I'm mostly just disappointed that a place with such great donuts and that is known locally as a KC donut legend that is now headquartered in Colorado has gone the way of the apathetic chain store when it comes to caring about what their customers think.
