The husband of this couple screamed at the members of wedding party upon delivery when questioned about the subpar cookies and the color of flowers on cake. Top tier of cake was missing the leaves around roses and they had to come back to add them. Flower colors were bleeding into the white icing like they were melting. Colors used were not mixed well, as white icing streaks were showing through. The woman grabbed a table decoration without asking and stuck it on top of the cake while being told repeatedly that "That DOES NOT belong there" Delivery was 2 hours before wedding in a 70° air conditioned venue, so being too hot, or delivering too early was not a viable excuse that they tried to use. I really wanted to like this place traveled far to this bakery that is ran out of home. But I can't justify buying a cake without these two important elements. I ordered 40 cupcakes for a wedding shower - 20 vanilla and 20 chocolate. I requested a white frosting with edible sugars/pearls- something elegant. Since I live out of state, I requested a photo of what the cupcakes would look like. They sent me a photo of a sample frosted cupcake that had a rose petal design (attached). It was perfect and beautiful and matched exactly what I had in mind. I had already purchased the flags in the photos separately. When I picked up the cakes, I was disappointed. If I could give zero stars, I would. This was one of the worst experiences I have ever had. To be honest, I think our experience was likely a misunderstanding due to miscommunication, but what prompted me to actually sign in online and write a review was how the owner of this business handled the situation in person. We believed we had made an appointment through "wedding wire" online, and had set it for 10am. We called the night before with our name to confirm our appointment, and were given verbal response that we were indeed ready to be welcomed for our cake tasting. He in fact responded with both our first and last name when confirming. We showed up and were met with another customer who also had a 10am appointment. We thought this was strange at first, but figured that there was a chance that perhaps this was a big tasting event, and didn't worry too much about it. When the door opened, confusion ensued. Eventually it was determined that we did not, in fact, have an appointment set--despite the verbal confirmation from the previous day. Okay, that's a total bummer. I had flown in to Michigan from Texas, and my Mom had driven 2 hours for the appointment. We made the appointment very far in advance knowing that we were trying to work around busy lives with busy schedules while planning a wedding outside of our home town (and current state). The thing is, the woman who "greeted" us was maybe the most rude woman I have ever come in contact with. She was immediately defensive and blamed us for the misunderstanding. She, quite literally, told us to get off of her lawn, which blew my mind--as I did not feel we had deserved such treatment. We had simply showed up excited and willing to try to find an alternative solution. In trying to figure out the situation, she only frowned, accused us of our wrong doing, and in no way tried to remedy the situation. I work in customer service, too. I am the owner of my business. My job relies on excellent customer satisfaction and on word-of-mouth referrals. Even when my client is the cause of a misunderstanding, I swallow my pride and try to remedy the situation as soon as possible with grace, kindness, and respect. I rarely write reviews. Truly, I usually like to give business owners the benefit of the doubt because I understand how difficult it can be. But I was utterly appalled by the behavior of this business transaction. Had she tried to kindly suggest that we had made a mistake or take ownership in any way, we would have shrugged and moved on, but since she only spoke to us with contempt, and in no way took responsibility for the miscommunication (instead only blaming us, two hopeful customers who came a long way to try some cakes) I could not bare to let something like this happen to another happy family down the road. For her 12th birthday...she had a very specific wish list and cake that she drew out so I knew EXACTLY what she wanted :) She also googled cake bakeries in the area, and after much exploration of all of their web sites decided that this was the one she was destined to get her cake from! I found Lakes Cakes on The Knot while looking for wedding cakes. My fiance and I tried a lot of cakes to find the one ( one of the best parts of planning imo) and I can say with confidence that Lakes is one of the best out there. We picked up a sample box from their home and were so surprised by the amount of cake we recieved! I'm picky but enjoyed every single flavor. Even better, their prices were incredibly fair. I would not recommend Lakes Cakes. When I choose to have Lakes Cakes create the wedding cake of my dreams, everything seemed perfect. However, when I received my cake it looked horrendous. The cake looked absolutely nothing like the cake they said that they could and would create for my wedding. My wedding cake was a huge disappointment. To make matters worse, I was told that I did not need to save the top tier to my wedding cake because I would receive an anniversary cake on my 1 year anniversary. When I contacted Lakes Cakes, in regards to an anniversary cake, I was rudely told that their policy had changed and that an anniversary cake was never in my contract. I would never do business with them or recommend their services to anyone. Also... Their response to why my cake looked horrendous was because I choose not to have my cake covered in fondant. I choose NOT to have my cake covered in fondant because Heidi told me that her buttercream is "just as smooth as fondant" and that she could still make the cake look wonderful. These are people who are supposed to help you on happy days of life but they think they are entitled to treat people like crap. I hope this review helps at least one person not make the mistake of dealing with these rude people. If you look on other review sites they actually reply back and try to bash people even further. I am attaching my text messages as proof. Keep in mind that I paid for a product and never received it. They literally lost nothing but time they wasted arguing further. We used Lakes Cakes for our wedding in 2010. Heidi was extremely nice and helpful from the first meeting to the delivery of our cakes. She met with me and provided me with a bunch of plentiful samples for my groom. (he couldn't make the meeting.) Once I decided on my designs, she worked with me to match the colors of my wedding party and also respected our tight budget by being clear and upfront about all costs. The day of the wedding, the cakes were delivered and set up by Heidi and her husband. They had such a great attention to detail and I didn't have to worry about how they looked, she even remembered the requests I had made and did a wonderful job of setting up.The cakes looked great and tasted even better! We had lots of compliments on them! My only regret was that we were out of town for my grandmothers funeral for the week of our one year anniversary, when we would have received a free anniversary cake from them. They do not follow thru on their commitments and are rude beyond belief. My cake was not ready when I went to pick it up and they expected me to wait 20 minutes to prepare it. I did not have 20 minutes so I left not knowing what to do. I called and requested a refund and they agreed to process my credit card One week later I discovered they did not credit my account. I called thinking it was an oversight and the man that originally took my order began yelling at me! They changed their minds and decided that I should have accepted being inconvenienced! Interestingly, that the couple above was late to an appointment with them and they thought that was unacceptable. But if they are late with an order their response to me was "I don't know what to tell you". I understand problems occur and can be worked out if you are dealing with professional business people. The cupcakes were not only damaged on the sides because they were packed too tight but also not the right color, white instead of pink.When I called and spoke with Gregory, the owner, he explained to me that it was not a big deal and that I was not specific about the color frosting (pink). I sent Heidi and Gregory a picture of exactly what I wanted. He also explained that the cupcakes were beautiful and they would not remake them. Lakes Cakes made by far the best wedding cake ever! We were having a non-traditional backyard wedding over the July 4th weekend so we didn't want a cookie cutter cake. That being said, I also didn't want to go the cupcake route because it's just been done too many times. Also, I live in Texas so I only had 1 visit (for the wedding shower) to get the cake part set up. Lakes Cakes invited us into their home for our tasting. They made up a standard sampling of cakes & fillings for us but we really wanted to get a PB & J Cake. So, their chef went into the kitchen to "whip up some peanut butter mousse" for us. OMG! One taste and we knew this was the peanut butter mousse we had to have. We wanted a "naked cake" with exposed sides so you could see all the layers of cake/filling. Our final cake was beautiful. It was 3 tiers of square shaped cakes each with 4 layers of yellow/butter cake & layers of Peanut Butter Mousse & Strawberry Preserves between each cake layer. The very top of each cake tier was buttercream frosting. Each of the tiers were offset and we had a pink burlap ribbon that came down the side of the cake with little gum paste edible pink / white daisies. The cake was so pretty as it was that we actually forgot to put the cake topper on it! After the ceremony we had a reception line and then cut our cake because we decided "Life is short, why not eat dessert first!" All of our guests were coming up to us asking where we had gotten that cake because it was so good! They make all kinds of cakes at Lakes so if you want something more traditional or something more unique, they will have you covered!
