This process ended up being one of my favorite parts of the wedding planning process. She was very patient with me and husband and helped us create the perfect combination of flavors. Everyone loved our cake and there was none left! Gwen is a true master in this area and understands what it takes to create a delicious and beautiful cake. She was so fun to work with and answered all of our questions and was kind enough to let us borrow her cake platter/base. Initial impression was not consistent with a 5 star. It's this middle-of-nowhere place with strange decor, barely looks like a sweets shop. But that was misleading. This is a cake shop that stands out above the rest because of how down to earth the staff is, how customer oriented they are (willing to deliver cakes just about anywhere, but practical about how important it is to eat a cake soon after making it), and how delicious the food is. My fiancé and I have been to several cake shops for our wedding and have very particular goals. Their staff is completely dedicated toward getting it right. This was a Groupon find and we have been back many times since. The kids love the dessert pizzas that the owner whips up. I was leary at first but the crust on these is magical. They come in many flavors from peanut butter to strawberry. I have also tried many cupcakes, muffins and cookies ...all were delicious. We ordered a 3 dozen cupcake Groupon for Trifles to give it a try. Got two of the chocolate/chocolate and one of the vanilla/strawberry. Both cakes were moist, and the frostings both have good flavor. Nice fresh strawberry on top. I also tried several of the other bakery items in the store - couldn't resist! They have a lot of different flavors of cupcakes. We tried the key lime (excellent), Bumpy cake (more moist & better taste than that other cupcake chain's), Oreo & red velvet. Also had a few of their danishes. Service was very friendly, there is a nice seating area there & they have coffee & drinks available. When my husband and I were planning our June 2012 wedding we chose Trifles because the owner Gwen not only made fabulous tasting cakes, but she really took the time to listen to us. Gwen's calm demeanor and willingness to do pretty much whatever we wanted made it an easy choice. We got tons of complements on our cake. We let another couple tour our venue the day of our wedding and even they were impressed with our wedding cake and wanted to know who made it. Since our wedding, we've purchased a couple of birthday cakes along with some small treats and those were just as delicious! We will be customers for as long as we live in this area! We ordered a strawberry torte cake last week for my spouse's birthday. We were visiting from California and we needed to find a cake for the birthday party at the in-laws. I did some research and decided on Trifles. We ordered a couple days before the party. Last minute but we were only ordering an 8-inch cake. Trifles was more than happy to bake us the cake. The strawberry torte cake consists of White cake, strawberry cream mousse, strawberries, chantilly cream, strawberry filling, light whipped frosting. Topped with chocolate dipped strawberries. When we picked up the cake, the cake shop told us to get to a refrigerator as soon as possible or serve immediately. It was mid 80s with high humidity. Luckily, we only had to go to Commerce only 10 minutes away. I can say that the strawberry torte cake here is one of the best cakes that I have every had. The cake was light and not overly sweet. Just the right amount of sweetness but not overwhelm you. I saved the cake and many people at the party thought I made the slice too big. But because the cake was so delicious and light, everyone ate their cake! Because of the freshness and delicacy of the cake, I now understand why we needed to get the cake to refrigerator as soon as possible. I totally impressed the in-laws and my spouse's family! This is a hidden gem! We had the pleasure of meeting Gwen and tasting some of the best cupcakes, cookies, and danishes! We walked in to take a box of treats home for a gathering. Gwen was helpful in telling us the flavors, what's popular, and what she had in the back in case we wanted more of a certain type. We got the Carrot Cake, Black Forest, and Caramel Apple cupcakes. After cutting them into pieces to split, we loved them all! Full of flavor and just enough of everything. They weren't dry, they had a perfect amount of frosting, and tasted great. We also ordered the Apple, Raspberry, and Strawberry danishes. Those were tried the next day with coffee and were great too. The added touch of fresh fruit on top was a nice treat and made it easy to differentiate which flavor was which. They have a nice amount of fruit filling and crust surrounding it to avoid a mess while eating. She also threw in some apricot pocket cookies that were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Overall, we liked everything we got from here. Gwen mentioned that their specialty at the bakery were special orders. It's best to order in advance and pick up. While we enjoyed what we got, the selection does show its best to order ahead as there isn't a vast selection when you walk in. Ok, so I just discovered a hidden gem!!! I am not joking when I say that Trifles in West Bloomfield on Commerce Rd, which by the way is an amazing cake bakery, is serving up the best Pasties and Quiche I have ever had. Typically, a pastie is made with ground beef and root vegetables, inside of a pie crust. These are on a new level. Chef Gwen has literally recreated this timeless dish, she has combined the pastie with slow cooked pot roast, carrots, potatoes, onions, and rutabaga, wrapped it in the most delicate pie crust and tops it with homemade gravy. I was literally blown away!!! In addition she is serving up some killer quiche as well, flavors include Quiche Lorraine, Spinach and Feta, Crabmeat Quiche, and Broccoli and Cheddar to name a few. Trifles made my wedding cake. Gwen was fantastic, as was her staff. Don't be fooled by her middle of nowhere location and dark store. This bakery makes the BEST cakes in southeastern Michigan--the artistry, quality of ingredients, and top level of customer service have made this place the go-to for all of our major events. I could not be happier with Trifles. The tasting went great--we had used trifles for my brother's wedding, so we knew it was top quality. I told her I knew what I wanted for one of our cake layers, but didn't exactly know what I wanted for the grooms layer and he had only given me vague guidance. Gwen walked me through my options, and came up with a good custom choice--nutella mousse! My groom LOVED this option, and it was a huge hit at the wedding. The day of, the cake looked AMAZING. Gwen perfectly fulfilled my desire for a bright, colorful but classy wedding cake. Her sugar flowers were so beautiful, brightly colored, and realistic looking. She also added a little songbird which I requested, and added perfect artistic touches throughout the sugar flower arrangement. This cake was exactly what I wanted, and then even more! When I saw it at my wedding my jaw dropped. It was GORGEOUS. Not only was the cake beautiful-- it tasted AMAZING. We did a 3 layer round cake, 1 layer which was raspberry and lemon curd, the other was the nutella mouse. Both had white cake, and whipped frosting. I tried both at the wedding and LOVED them. The cake was moist, the frosting was sweet and fluffy, and the fillings tasted great. Guests were asking for seconds, and I got comments all night on how great the cake was. This may have been my own fault--the woman there (owner?) said that Saturdays they mostly devote to custom cake orders. I'd hoped for a coffee cake of some kind, but settled for cinnamon rolls and a couple of cupcakes. Everything was stale :( From reviews it sounds like the cakes are great, so if I need one I will give them a try, but this is not so much a "stop in for a pastry and cup of coffee" place. read more

I stopped in at the new West Bloomfield location and bought a cupcake. I know...people think a cupcake is just a cupcake. Not true! That cupcake was so good. I wanted to drive back and get another one. It was so light and fluffy. The German chocolate icing was perfect. I went back a couple of days later to get another cupcake, but decided to try a pistachio muffin instead. Outstanding...just like the cupcake. I am definitely going to be a regular here. The chocolate candy is wonderful, too. For a future trip, I am going to get one of those giant caramel apples! I needed to find a quality bakery for our sweet sixteen party. We wanted to customize a cupcake tower and certainly wasn't going to trust the local grocery store to do so. I walked in to Trifles without an appointment and the owner, Gwen was so nice and met with me to discuss design ideas. She has a cozy corner tucked in the shop with a plethora of books and magazines with tons of ideas to chose from. Gwen also got out her Ipad full of cake and cupcake pics. She sent me home with a few cupcake samples to taste with the family. She fills the cupcakes with various buttercreams which is quite tasty and helps keep the cake moist. Our favorite combo was chocolate cake with peanut butter flavored buttercream, oh my!! We went back a week later to finalize and mesh our ideas. Gwen proposed her design by sketching it onto paper and that was the beginning. We decided on a small cake in the shape of a cupcake on top of the cupcake tower. For a small fee, she will deliver the cake to your venue and set everything up. No biggie to me, I wasn't about to take a chance and do it myself.. Her fondant was tasty and so smooth. Gwen tastefully decorated the tower platform. She topped off everything with the prettiest crystal-like sprinkles for a little extra bling without it being over the top. Gwen was telling me about a huge cake she was decorating for a wedding and I never felt less important. The prices are very reasonable and I love the personal touch! read more

Trifles provided our wedding cake for our reception at Waldenwoods Resort in Hartland MI on February 9th 2013. We had a three tiered round cake with white frosting and ivory piping with a custom cake topper, buttercream frosting, and two flavors - a white cake with white chocolate chantilly cream and raspberry chantilly cream and chocolate cake with chocolate chantilly cream and raspberry chantilly cream. My (now) husband and I met with Gwen (the owner) several times before the wedding and each time she offered us a tasting to remind us of our options. She was very helpful in picking out the size of cake and the amount of sheet cake we would need to accommodate our guests as well as discussing options in our price range. For what we got I feel that the price was excellent! I did a custom design for the cake which I drew myself and Gwen re-created perfectly! She even added small metallic gold balls through the design to add a tiny hint of sparkle (gold was one of our colors). The beautiful cake stand she provided (free of charge) also complimented the ornate style of our wedding. Most importantly - the cake tasted delicious! It was moist, very flavorful, and VERY rich. Gwen had worked with Waldenwoods several times so she knew when to drop the cake off, who to talk to, where to take it to, etc. so that was very helpful to me as it was one less thing I needed to worry about. I do not have any complaints about my experience with Trifles, Gwen, or the results, and I would absolutely recommend Trifles. read more

I ordered some "gender reveal" cupcakes delivered (I no longer live in Michigan) to my parents and my brother and his fiance. Everyone said the cupcakes were delicious and my parents were so surprised! Unfortunately, my brother told the delivery driver to leave them on his doorstep, and the dog got to them before he could. Ordered a chocolate raspberry torte for my sisters birthday. I got there early to pick it up ... and they were just getting ready to make me a new one because the new baker made a mistake on it. It was done and absolutely gorgeous - and no one would know about the mistake (milk chocolate ganache instead of dark chocolate) so I said don't bother. It was fantastic. They also gave me 2 dozen mini cupcakes because of their boo-boo and they were excellent as well. We hired Gwen to cater our daughters' college grad party for 50l Couldn't say enough good about the food-Chicken Divan, Loaded Mostocolli, 2 Kinds of Pulled Pork, 3 different salads, assorted deserts and cupcakes plus a cookies and cream cake. Rave reviews from us and our guests and very professional, prompt and beautiful setup. Beautiful display and a thorough job from planning to completion. Will hire Gwen again if needed in the future even though a 40 minute drive away. Worth every penny and extremely reasonable for the generous amount of food you are given. I can't say enough good things about Trifles Bakery! I agree with some of the other posts about the owner Gwen. She is awesome! She's been in business of over 20 years. She still has that small business ethic that lets you know she truly appreciates your business. We went to 3 bakeries for our wedding cake and it was easy to see that Trifles offered the best quality and price amongst the choices. She did a great job on our Beach themed wedding cake. Our guests were so impressed with the cake's appearance that they questioned if the cake was simply for display! The seashells on the cake were edible white chocolate. But guests were placing theme to the side because they were so pretty, they thought they were plastic lol! The cake was moist and delicious! We had three different fillings (one for each tier) and two cake flavors! It all blended together so nicely. The left overs have gone so fast that my hubby and I are tempted to eat the topper! My cousin had her baby at the hospital. Even though I live in TX, I wanted to surprise her with cupcakes because flowers are boring! They let me customize my order with the type of cake and frosting I wanted as well as holiday decorations. The order was ready for pickup on time. However, the cupcakes were some of the worst I've ever had. For cupcakes that normally retail for $24, I was very disappointed.
