I recently went to Lakay Kusina in Scarborough with a group of friends who were experiencing a traditional Kamayan Feast, aka Boodle Fight, for the first time. Needless to say, they thoroughly enjoyed it. Most of the group arrived early enough to see our table being prepared, from the banana leaves, garlic rice, seafood, meats, and vegetables, to the garnishes all being laid out for us. They were eagerly waiting to dig in! Our meal had lots of components, including BBQ pork skewers, pork belly, grilled fish, fish balls, shrimps, lumpia, eggplant, okra, bakchoy, green beans, garlic rice, and more. It was all good! A simple but delicious soup, and some beverages were included, making this a great value meal. Oh, we also got ice cream to complete our feast. Everybody adapted well to eating with their hands, something they probably haven't done since childhood, at least not like this. They actually quite enjoyed the food and the experience. This was a great value for delicious food at only CDN$25/person.

We had the feast which was good, service was friendly! Gave many variety of sauces to have along with your meal. Gave ube soft serve after our meal and sang happy birthday as we were celebrating a birthday. Free, self-serve broth soup and juices to try; which were all delicious. Staff were kind and joking around with customers. Karaoke going on at the end of the night. Fun and cozy atmosphere!

I had sang praises about this place to my friends after my first visit and one of them decided to host his bday dinner here this year as he hadn't really tried a kamayan feast before. We were able to try two of their soups this time in addition to the food (pork sinigang broth and a beef broth). I liked the slightly sour flavour profile of the pork broth as it really opened up my appetite! The staff brought dessert out for us at the end of the meal which was thoughtful. Thanks once again to Ariel and staff for hosting us!

3.5 star review. Came to this plaza to try a different restaurant and when I noticed that the Filipino restaurant was literally beside, I was excited. There was probably three rows of tables small restaurant to be honest. There's a hot table like most Filipino restaurants and I'll be honest. The food looks great. Doesn't look dried out like other hot tables. Ordered barbeque pork skewers, crispy pata and two orders of rice to go. Total cost was 50 bucks. The guy you see on Instagram was there along with other employees definitely a mom pop shop. I was offered to have calimansi juice or soup broth to go. That was a nice touch. Onto the food Pata was good Don't know if you can actually complain about that however, the way it was plated to go was beautiful as you can see in the photo. The barbeque pork skewers were a little more sweeter than I was craving and the rice was mushy. However, I will say that this potentially would be a place. I would bring my parents to try again.

A homey shop that serves boodle fight. It is a small shop with three long tables, our party of 17 people took over 2 of the 3 tables. They setup the boodle fight in front of us, but we also had unlimited calamansi juice and soup while waiting. Food was wonderful, good amount of food set infront of you. Things I liked: Pork skewers, tilapia, the shrimp paste, calamnsi juice. Fun to try in a large group setting!

An amazing gem, so so happy I found this place! Was looking for a Filipino restaurant and just happened to come across Lakay Kusina, and I'm so glad I did! The restaurant is small but cozy with nice decor. The staff is by far some of the friendliest people ever, they're helpful with explaining their menu and love to just talk and chat. After lunch, we ended up staying behind and chatting for another 30 minutes! The food is amazing, so much flavour and so much variety as well! Came here with my girlfriend and we ordered: Tapsilog - Filipino Breakfast with sinagag and itlog (peppery beef with garlic rice and egg) 8.5/10 Chicken adobo - sweet savoury chicken 9/10 Pork Sisig - minced pork, chopped onion and chicken liver 8/10 They served free soup as well that day and it was also delicious! Overall I highly recommend this place, such a welcoming restaurant!

What a wonderful mom-and-pop establishment! Service from the son was excellent, he kindly explained how we should eat the boodle fight, especially all the sauces. My favorites were the bbq pork satay, fried fish, shrimp, and ube ice cream dessert. The grilled pork can be a little crispier, but was still pretty good. There are only 3 long tables that fit in the restaurant space. If you're coming with a big group, you should definitely make a reservation.

We really enjoyed our Kamayan feast dinner on banana leaves here. The foundation is a bed of flavourful garlicky rice, with slices of tomato and cucumber. Then they add fried fish, grilled chicken, grilled prawn, skewers with meatballs & bbq pork, spring roll, and lumpia. Cooked vegetables are also included: steamed okra, bak choy, green bean, grilled eggplant. Dinner was served with a few different sauces, vinegar, etc. The rice was delicious. The grilled chicken was crispy and good. Bbq pork skewers, fried spring roll and lumpia were good too. The vegetables were cooked plainly, without much flavour; I wish they had cooked them with some more seasonings & would like to try more flavourful saucy dishes here next time. Service was great. The restaurant is cozy and cute.

Last month, I heard about Lakay Kusina from a fellow Yelper. He thought that it would be fun having a bunch of Yelpers experience a kamayan feast, which is also referred to as a boodle fight. It's basically enjoying a feast with folks and eating with your hands. It sounded perfect to me. We met on a Tuesday evening at the end of February. The short version of my review is that I loved it so much that I returned again a week later to try more food from the place. The food is yummy. This eatery is in a small plaza. I had no problem backing into a parking spot. I walked in, and saw both familiar and new faces. Ariel is the nicest owner and human being. He was so welcoming and patient with us taking countless photos and videos while he was carefully crafting our feast on banana leaves. Although we were eating with our hands, we were offered gloves. I got a pair of large gloves and felt comfortable in them throughout the meal. I will say that eating with my hands was so freeing that I have been doing it a lot more despite having access to cutlery... haha We had a lot of good food in front of us: - Lumpia - Turon - Veggies (eggplant, okra, bok choy, and green beans) - Garlic fried rice - Fish balls - Barbequed pork skewers - Shrimp - Pork belly - Chicken - Fish (butterfish and tilapia) There were six types of sauces. It was fun being a sauce mixologist during our meal. Combining the acidic ones with the spicier ones was so much fun. They enhanced the food experience. I loved this meal so much. It was nice to put the phone away and chat with good company over scrumptious food. Everything was so good. However, the chicken and pork belly stole my heart. They were grilled perfectly. The chicken fell off the bone. I kept shovelling pork belly morsels in my already stuffed belly. They were that yummy. A Yelper, towards the end of our dinner, said to me, "Do you want to eat an embryo?" Worded like that, probably not. However, one Yelper had it for the first time. We witnessed her peel off the egg shell. Balut is a fertilized duck egg with a developing embryo. She then took a bite. She loved it! She said that it was pretty good. My friend, who is Filipino, is my guide to Filipino cuisine. He enjoys balut. Although I have never had it, we have similar tastes. I'd probably enjoy it without someone telling me that I'm eating an embryo. We also got to try cassava suman for dessert. My friend and I shared this cylindrical delicacy made with cassava, sugar, and coconut. It's wrapped in a banana leaf and then steamed. I will say that unwrapping a banana leaf in gloves is a challenge in itself! I did manage to successfully remove the leaf. We then broke it in half and rolled it in brown sugar. It was yummy. My friend, a day later, said that it's even better with regular white sugar. I'll need to get more cassava suman and quietly enjoy it with both types of sugar. I came back a week later to enjoy silog, which is breakfast. I've been having silog more often these days. I had to try Ariel's version. First, it was massive! Second, it had everything that I love: - Cucumber and tomato slices - An over-easy egg over garlic fried rice - A folded egg omelette - Grilled butterfish - Corned beef - SPAM coated in egg and fried - Filipino bacon (tocino) - Filipino sausage (loganisa) - Orange slice - Cape gooseberries The silog was extremely filling. It was excellent and generous, with a nice balance of protein, carbs, fruit, and veggies. I have never thought about slicing SPAM, dipping it in egg, and then frying it. I need to give it a try. I keep dreaming about returning for the silog alone. I helped myself to complimentary water near the payment area during both visits. One had cucumber slices. The other had lime slices. I loved both. They were refreshing and I felt like I was at a spa. I got to try chicken chicharron hot out of the fryer. Wow! I love chicharron so much. The chicken version was amazing. Crispy. Flavourful. Delicious! I tried a Fanta pineapple drink. It was my first time. It was heavenly. I didn't care about the sugar content. It's my new favourite Fanta flavour. Say that fast! It's great when one Yelper recommends a gem of an eatery. I had a wonderful couple of visits. The food is amazing. Ariel and his staff are so kind and hospitable. I'd return for more. Debit and credit cards, and cash are accepted. For our huge feast, there weren't any public washrooms. However, we were able to cut through the kitchen to use them. Ariel is such a handy person that he made a hallway leading to the washrooms a week later, so it's safer for patrons to get there without cutting through a busy kitchen! If you want authentic Filipino food, come here. The prices are decent. The food and drink quality is impeccable. (125)

Nice little Filipino restaurant located at Ellesmere Rd and Pharmacy Ave. There's a small dining area with nice little trinkets hanging on the wall shelves. It makes you feel at home. There's a hot table with various Filipino dishes like deep fried okoy ( seafood fritters), lechon kawali (crispy pork belly), pork bbq skewers, kare kare (peanut butter stew), dinadakan (seasoned grilled pork), chicken adobo, beef caldereta, pork sisig, dinuguan (pork blood stew), and assorted soups (sinigang, nilaga, papaitan). You have the option to order combo meals where you can choose 1 ulam (dish) and rice $12.99. 2 ulam (dish) and rice $14.99 and 3 ulam (dish) and rice $16.99. You can also order various dishes a la carte. The prices vary depending on the meat or veggie dish. We ordered the boodle fight meal $24.99, which allows you to try a few different items. The presentation was really nice and the food was made fresh to order. It comes with grilled bangus (milk fish), grilled pork belly, fishballs, turon (plantain spring roll), lumpia (spring roll), grilled shrimp, steamed okra, garlic rice and pancit guisado. The staff member said the boodle fight meal is good for 2 people. Realistically, if you are very hungry, you could eat this tray of food on your own. My wife and I ordered an extra 1 ulam and rice combo meal. We ordered the pork sisig and it was really good. The pork bbq stick was marinated perfectly and had nice char texture. It really reminded me of chinese bbq pork. Overall, it was a pleasant experience dining in here. The service was a bit slow, but the food that came out was delicious. If you are new to Filipino cuisine, I recommend the boodle fight meal because you get to sample many dishes.

This is the first restaurant i've been to in the GTA that i can say with confidence is actually really good and i've been to a handful. The place is a nice little hole in the wall in the west scarborough area. Very homey and cozy. The food on display looks amazing and I was lucky enough to try some of them. I ordered the 3 item combo and chose: Pinakbet: Squash with eggplant, shrimp paste and green beans (amazing) Pork Sisig and Dinuguan (pork blood stew with pork meat) The food is delicious, the pinakbet blew my mind because it's a bowl of basically steamed vegetables, but the flavor is incredible. The pork sisig was a nice mix of crunchy and tender deliciousness and had lots of grilled onions The dinuguan was great and the owner was nice enough to offer free fried chicken skin on the side that he said goes well with the dinuguan sauce. He was right, i finished everything. There's also complimentary hot sinigang broth and Calamansi juice on the side for self serving. The owner is super nice and the servers explained the menu very well and the food came out relatively fast. Everything came out to under $20 CAD(before optional tip) which is half of what i paid for any other restaurant in the GTA. Unbelievable. Will definitely be coming back if i'm ever in the area again.

Super homey, picnic-style eatery. A good breakfast spot for small groups. Here's what we ordered: * Sisig-silog $15.99 * Tap-silog $15.99 * BBQ skewers (2) $3.50each * (1) Okoy $6.50 Total for the two of us was only $52 after tax and tip!!! First time we've ever been to a restaurant where they pack AND re-dressed our takeout container - we were amazed to say the least. The owner, Ariel is awesome and kept checking on us to make sure we were enjoying and to make sure we had everything we needed. We'll definitely be back to try the boodle dish and halo halo.

This is a very small restaurant near Victoria Park Ave. and Ellesmere Rd. The plaza doesn't have many parking spots. Inside, there are around fifteen seats and a hot food display case. We ordered the Boodle Fight. This included grilled bangus, fried tilapia, chicken and pork BBQ skewers, pork lumpia, BBQ grilled pork belly, fish balls, shrimp, fried eggplant, steamed okra, green beans, yu choy, pancit guisado, oranges, and turon. It was served on top of garlic rice with tomatoes and cucumbers. I enjoyed watching the table get covered in banana leaves and then filled with food. The Boodle Fight is eaten Kamayan-style, meaning with your hands. Gloves are provided, and there are plastic eating utensils if you prefer. All of it was delicious, but we especially liked the garlic rice. It didn't look like it, but it was a lot of food! We definitely had to pack some to take home with us.

The Ensaymada is a fluffy bread type pastry filled with custard or ube. Both were delicious. The Shanghai and Empanada were good. I loved the Mini Turon which had banana and jack fruit inside a crispy shell, coated with caramelized brown sugar. For their skewers, you can pour a spiced vinegar sauce or a fishball sauce, or both into the cardboard container. The fishball sauce is a thick, sweet and savory sauce. Kikiam is a sausage-like roll made of minced pork and vegetables, seasoned with 5-spice powder Kwek Kwek is simply made up of hardboiled quail eggs that's coated in a pancake-like batter, and deep-fried until light and crispy. I absolutely loved the Sago Gulaman drink. I love sago pieces. The Gulaman has a sweetness from agar, which I also love. Calimansi is Philippine's most popular drink. Tapsilog, a popular Filipino (breakfast?) meal, is a portmanteau of the dish's three components: tapa (beef), sinangag (garlic fried rice), and itlog (fried egg). The beef was good. The fried rice was indeed garlicy. Chicken Inasal is a grilled chicken, typically the breast (Pecho) or leg (Paa). This version was the breast. This chicken was moist and perfectly cooked. Beef Mami is a type of Beef Noodle soup of Filipino-Chinese origin. This is simply composed of tender beef brisket and egg noodles, boiled eggs, and other toppings which are soaked in a hot and flavourful beef stock. This was indeed nice to have on a cold day like today. The beef was tender. Chicken Mami is a Filipino-style soup with flavourful stock, fresh egg noodles, flaked chicken, vegetables, and tasty toppings! This warm soup was also welcome on a cold day like today. Taho is a Philippine snack food made of fresh soft/silken tofu, arnibal, and sago pearl. This staple comfort food.of course I liked this because of the sago and tofu. I love anything with silky tofu in it! You usually eat it with a spoon but you can also use a wide straw. The Milk Jelly were good. It had a lot of flavoured jellies in thick milk. There are many picnic tables in the outdoor food court. Unfortunately during the Spring and Fall, the tables are not surrounded by walls as they are during winter. We happen to come when the temperature was around 2C! It felt so cold with the windchill. There is no free WiFi. The food stall is wheelchair accessible. There are o washrooms at this food court. We all…read morepitched eatery ideas and went with this suggestion from our Filipino friend who has always been my guide when it comes to Filipino food. We originally planned on going in early February. We meet up roughly every two months. One friend had to cancel. I was away during the long Family Day weekend. Instead, we rescheduled to the Saturday after the long weekend. I am the reservation booker in our group. I don't wait for someone to do it. It's an automatic instinct. I booked online twice. It was easy to cancel my first reservation and reschedule. You get a text message that confirms that your reservation is good or that your cancellation request went through. You also get a reminder a day before and an hour before your reservation. Nice! I had no problem finding a parking spot on Queen Street West, steps away from the eatery on the north side of the street. It's Green P parking, so I paid for three hours of parking through the app. I then started a new session for an hour because we tend to go over three hours when we dine as a group. It's such a great app and is convenient! One of my friends had arrived when I did. Moments later, our other friend made it. We all walked into the restaurant. The woman who greeted us knew my name from the reservation. It was nice to not say much! We got a nice table in the middle of the eatery. We ordered the following items: - To' silog with pandesal (me) - Bulalo (beef shank) soup - Barbeque - chicken and pineapple skewers - Sisig with steamed rice - Cava - Manila bay x 3 We got water to start. Our group tends to go for alcoholic drinks. We went with a bottle of cava, which was the best. It was fizzy, light, and enjoyable for brunch. I wanted a Filipino breakfast and went with the to' silog with pandesal. It had Filipino bacon called tocino that was pork belly. I love pork belly and liked how it was both slightly sweet and savory. I got two fried eggs, a light salad, and an orange wedge. It came with the fluffiest pandesal that I used to sop up the runny yolks. The garlic fried rice was amazing. Everything was delicious. One of my friend had the barbeque. I learned that barbeque means things on skewers that are barbequed. She got chicken and pineapple on skewers that came dangling from a pretty skewer holder with dipping sauce in the middle of it. She loved it so much. She saw my pandesal and my devouring it as if I hadn't had bread in my life that she got one. She understood how yummy it was. My other friend got the Bulalo (beef shank) soup. He was impressed that I knew the name of his dish. We have similar tastes. I like shank in soup. If I didn't have a craving for Filipino breakfast, I would have had this dish. He enjoyed it. It looked huge and hearty, especially with corn on the cob and other veggies in the soup. As we dined and chatted, I noticed an orange drink that the table next to us had. I asked our server what it was. It was Manila Bay. It had San Miguel beer, gin, calamansi, and honey. It was a traditional Manila drink. Our group said yes to a pitcher. It technical serves two, but we split it between the three of us to see if we liked it. OMG! This cocktail was delicious. We loved it so much that we ordered two more pitchers, so we essentially had one each when we were done. It was totally worth splurging to get it. It was refreshing and yummy. We didn't get any dessert. We were full from the food and drinks. Our alcoholic drinks were our dessert... haha! The washrooms are downstairs. It's an older building, so it's not great accessibility-wise. The washroom was clean and decent. Staff were so patient with us. We were the first group to arrive and the last to leave at around 4:30 pm. We got the bill split in three. All three of us paid with credit cards. I tapped and tipped. All was great. It's a fabulous place to enjoy authentic Filipino food and drinks with company. Everything was yummy and staff were great. I'd return in a heartbeat for more. Maybe we can do a kamayan feast (boodle fight eating with your hands) next time. (117)

Food: 3.5 Stars Service: 3 Stars…read moreAmbience: 3 Stars Fill Factor: Filling This is a late review but I came here based on a recommendation by a co-worker who really liked their BBQ offerings. Overall I was fairly satisfied with the food and wouldn't mind trying some of their other offerings. For some reason I was very excited to try this place so I ordered a bit more than I usually do. We did the prix fixe menu choosing the lumpia as our starter, adobo as our main, and a halo halo as our dessert. We also ordered the BBQ pork as this was highly recommended and the main reason I wanted to try Islas. The BBQ pork definitely met the hype as the meat was tender and flavourful. The lumpia (which is essentially a spring roll) was also great with its crispy exterior and flavourful fillings. The halo halo was solid as well. The adobo was the one thing I did not really enjoy much. It was ok but this is not the flavour of adobo that I personally enjoy. It was not bad but not the flavour I think of when I want adobo. The space was large and was dimly lit. It felt clean and spacious and the decor was alright nothing special. The service was ok. They took our order, brought our food and cashed us out. Really nothing especially good or bad. All in all I would definitely come back here for the BBQ and to try some of their other offerings. Glad I came here and tried it and would recommend the same to anyone looking for food in the area.

It is free to enter the night market. Ube is a purple yam, a type of sweet potato, scientifically called dioscorea alata. It's deep purple colour is due to the presence of anthocyanins. There were so many food vendors. There was Filipino artist Leeroy New, DJ Nina Salvo, Band BotterxBroke, and a magician. We ordered the following: 1. From Tito Parley's: Salvanas ($7.00), a macaron x ice cream sandwich, Ube Coco flavour. 2. From Hazel's Best: Ube Gulaman Samalamig ($6.00), a cold drink. 3. From Islas: UBE Smash Burger (double, $15.00). The food and drink we got were so delicious! There are picnic tables to sit on. After 18:00, it got crowded, so it may be hard to find a spot to sit down. We also met a friend, Rechie Valdez, federal Minister of Small Business. She herself is Canada's first Filipino federal minister. There is no free WiFi. The festival is wheelchair accessible. There are two paid parking lots. Review 2023-304

I loved the ube pork adobo cheese bun, very unique and delicious. Some items are really pricy for what you get, but that's usually the case at the night markets. Fun to try out some limited time items for the festival. Loved that there was a ube themed backdrop to take a photo and it was great that it was walking distance to us.
