After our beer we took a harowing taxi ride to Gustami. The driver has illusions of being the next Mario Andretti. Gustami's is off the beaten path. It's not a touristy establishment. It's small. It's quaint. It was good. It's definitely local Italian, but when we entered, they were playing Unforgetable by Nat King Cole. They continued to play that genre of music. Jan was a happy camper. We ordered a glass of Italian red, Primitivo Di Mandura. It was enjoyable, but not overly expensive. I was ready for an Italian Pizza. I ordered the Diavola (spicy salami). Jan ordered the Margherita. The pizzas were very good. The cheese and the sauce were exceptional. The crust would be typical of hand tossed in OKC. On the Divavola the salami reminded me of curled pepperoni. We thoroughly enjoyed dinner. The service was exceptional. Loved the venue.

I was here in Sept. 2023, here is the review:…read more The Good: 1. Food - was great. Tasty and just cooked right. All came in accordingly. Who knew, I can eat all that ! 2. Decor/Ambiance: about your typical italian restaurant in italy. Although, I like the serene scene, not being rush at all scene. Very relaxing and that long conversation with friends or relatives feel. 3.Location: in the quiet area of rome. The Bad: 1. My waiter - although, great and nice at first, became obnoxious as the night progress. I asked his name ( I dont want to him call...."hey waiter" all the time) gave me a very long, hard to remember, dont even know how to spell name. Disappeared after getting all my orders and never came back. Saw him strolling with a scooter. Another waiter was nice enough to asked me if i needed anything, i just ask for the check and gave a nice tip. 2. They discriminate against customer: it was around 10:30p, a couple came over wanted to dine, but once they found that they speak english, they immediate brushed them off by saying...."the kitchen is closed". the couple left. By 10:45P, another couple came by look at the menu, speaks italian and wala....the kitchen was opened and was served dinner. When you dealing with the public, esp. a restaurant at that, the customer(s) who dines at your restaurant are the blood of the business ! without the customer, you wouldn't be in business, hence you wouldn't have a job. Italy have an aging populations. They need to keep up with the changing times! So, tourist...be aware !

The bread basket was delicious served warm with amazing crust. The pasta was a tad undercooked but was the best tasting sauce ever. The melon sauce entirely new and never seen of heard of before. They took "summer melon" which I was told was cantaloupe. It was cut into 1/8 inch teeny tiny cubes and simmered for a long time until very soft and the sweetness a little washed out. It was sooo good. The braised beef was cooked to perfection, the sauce was delectable and the sides were great. The mozzarella and tomato was amazing too. Perfectly seasoned and the tomatoes were conscientiously sliced. 1000% suggest this restaurant

We had been seeking a delicious cacio e pepe and carbonara since arriving in Rome. Both times we were disappointed. Third time's the charm! My cacio e pepe was flavor packed. The pasta was cooked perfectly, the pecorino cheese was just the right balance of cheese, and the Madagascar wild pepper, added just the right touch of flavor. Neither of us were willing to share, so I didn't taste the Mr.'s carbonara, but since he almost licked his plate clean, that told me everything I needed to know about that carbonara. For his secondi the Mr. chose the braised veal marrow and I had the chicken supreme with new potatoes and spinach. We concluded our excellent meal with pistachio tiramisu for him and the baba al rum with custard cream for me. Again, we were enjoying our desserts so much that we didn't share. We will be thinking of that meal for a long time.

I found the menu a little intriguing, who or what is Benedetto Cavalieri, a prominent name on some dishes. Is it a style of preparation? While trying to google an answer, our helpful server explained it was a pasta maker of the highest order. Might not have been those exact words but I've learned it is a pasta company who goes to great lengths to produce a durum wheat only from certain fields and without the use of chemicals. We are not pasta connoisseurs but happy to try eating like one. I had their Fusillone "Benedetto Cavalieri". It was green, I liked it, and I assume it was a better pasta for me.

We walked in expecting a normal dining experience. The decor is very interesting, the inside of the restaurant was cozy and neat to look at. We decided to order the tasting menu, which at the time of this was 50 euro. We then ordered a bottle of red wine, to which our server replied "Let me check with the chef about that first". This was our first clue that we'd stumbled into something much more than we expected. Basically, this place is what I'd consider a casual fine dining restaurant, with a deceivingly charming look and atmosphere. I was wearing a simple T-shirt and jeans and felt totally comfortable. The food and service felt ripped straight from a posh, suits-only place though, which I say as a compliment! Our servers and the maître d' (I assume he was, given his demeanor and extensive knowledge and interactions with us) were absolutely wonderful. Speaking with the headwaiter regarding the bottle of red wine we wanted, he instead suggested that he help us to pair a different glass of wine with each dish, to which we happily agreed. With each dish that came out, he thoughtfully considered the ingredients, our tastes, and what would pair best, and made a suggestion (which he thoroughly explained to us each time). It was an awesome experience to have, as I'd never personally had this happen before. Without going into detail (because I'm not really elegant with describing food, and wouldn't do this place justice), every single dish in the tasting menu was phenomenal. Small portions and beautiful presentation, with massive and distinct flavors every time. He was also spot-on with each wine pairing. As an American, I'm usually wary of spending decent money on small portion meals, but each dish was so delicious that I would do this whole thing again with no regrets whatsoever. Hell, I even added this place as a recommendation in our AirBnb review; I feel this place deserves as much praise as it can get. Summary Pros: - Superb service: the servers knew and explained every detail of every dish, and the headwaiter was delightful to talk with and very helpful/knowledgable - The food was all delicious. You could tell real thought and effort went into every detail of each dish - The price was more than fair for the overall dish quality, service, and experience we received Cons: Honestly, the only thing I can think of would be that the place is small, so it may be crowded/loud or have less personalized service during peak times. This wasn't an issue with our visit at all, but we also went late on a Wednesday night. Really I'm only mentioning this so that I don't have zero cons here :)
