Getting fit with the right walking shoes at La Foot Plus solved my foot problems and spared me a lot of pain and agony during 5 days of walking around New Orleans. I suffer from a 20-year old auto accident knee injury, occasional back pain, and recently-developed arthritis in my big toe. It was so painful I thought I had fractured something. It was hard to put weight on the ball of my foot, so I limped quite a bit. I was put on anti-inflammatories by my podiatrist, but I was still having difficulties getting around. I had no idea what kind of shoe to look for. Luckily, I found LaFoot Plus. I agree with what has already been said about their high level of knowledge and customer service. I only had to take about 3 steps before my feet and gait were analyzed and I was told I needed "a lot of correction." (A lot of times, when you hear a statement like that, say from an auto mechanic, it's bad, expensive news. Here, it meant my problem was gonna be solved.) I tried on at least 3 different pairs of recommended shoes for comparison and fit. I was told to take a walk up and down the block to test them out. I was fitted with a different shoe on each foot, so that I could compare one with the other at the same time and then asked for my feedback, so that further adjustments could be made. While there we never much discussion of style or color preferences, I never felt like I was being hustled. It was all about getting the right fit. They also recommended some Superfeet inserts. Although I had used some in the past, I found out I was using the wrong model. My feet immediately felt more stable and the pressure was lessened on the ball of my foot, but I had no idea of how my feet would withstand 5 days of constant sightseeing and walking. To my total surprise and relief, except for the sore ankles anyone would expect from walking a lot, I had no further problems. My foot, knee, and back pain were pretty much gone. In fact, after getting home from my trip, the tenderness I had been experiencing under my big toe had already healed. I hoped that the correct shoe would help, but I had no idea that all my foot and knee pain could be resolved by shoes alone. An amazing feat. read more

These people really know what the hell they're doing. I just started getting into running recently and I felt like I needed some good quality shoes. So I go to LaFoot and I just see a large selection of shoes on the wall. I tell them I'm confused as to what kind of shoes to get and they were more than happy to help out. They put the shoes on for you and tie them up and let you try them out on the street. Pretty cool. Amazing customer service! I was all set to make an impulse purchase of the latest and greatest running shoe when I walked into the store. In 5 minutes the sales associate checked my gait, and told me that my current running shoes were all the support I needed, and advised me on how I should ease back into running. I went here a few weeks ago to get analyzed for a new pair of running shoes and was very pleased. They spend plenty of time with their customers explaining his/her stride, asking if they're having any pain or issues and then discussing which shoes would be most appropriate. I also have really narrow feet and was pleasantly surprised to learn they carry narrow (2A) sizes in the store. After letting me try 4 pairs (they let you take them outside for a jog too), I ended up with a Brooks Addication. After about 2 weeks of running in my new shoes, I was having a lot of pain and went back to the store to discuss what could be the cause. I was really impressed that Eddie was willing to swap them out (they were used!) for a different model (Brooks Adrenaline) and have been running in those virtually pain-free since! Craig is awesome! I swooshed in there and our eyes connected and he knew I used to run and had bad knees and needed thick tennis shoes! Service was fast and efficient! Upon arrival, Craig asked me to take off my shoes and walk so he could observe my gait. Immediately, he could tell I have knee problems and recommended a pair of very comfy brooks. We talked about what type of shoes best fits me and he even took time to explain to my husband why his shoes might not be the best fit for him. They are very knowledgable about custom orthotics. However, serious runners should beware. They have a preference for heavy, overbuilt shoes to correct overpronation. I went in and kept telling them that I was a midfoot striker and wanted the lowest shoe that would accommodate my orthotics, but they kept pushing me toward a Brooks shoe that is just too big and clunky for me. I ended up going elsewhere and getting a more minimal shoe and have been running happily and injury free. My girlfriend also went there for a shoe fitting and came out with a pair of heavy motion control shoes. She started having pain and brought the shoes to her physical therapist, who determined that they were overcorrecting. read more

Went here first several years ago for custom orthotics for plantar fasciitis. Went back today to buy a couple of pairs of shoes. Didn't want to give my money to a big box chain. It's bad enough that nothing is manufactured in the USA anymore, no need to give more $$ to the thieving 1% by diverting retail sales from good small local businesses. I dropped by this place just the other day to pick up a pair of running shoes. I'm not an experienced runner -- I've been stopping and starting with running for many years, due to small but worrisome injuries and general laziness. When you're as inexperienced as I am, you worry about meeting salespeople who talk a lot of fancy scientific talk, but really have in mind to sell you their most expensive pair, regardless of what kind of unholy things it does to your feet. My experience at Lafoot was great. I had the fortune of meeting Craig, who is the owner and founder of Lafoot (although I didn't know that until our transaction was nearly over.) He asked me to take off my shoes and socks and walk along the floor several times. It was interesting watching him while I did that -- he seemed utterly absorbed by my stride and walking style, like a master painter observing the landscape that he is about to paint. Then he explained that my feet tend to overpronate (meaning roll to one side), showed me some charts explaining the differing degrees of support of various shoes, and introduced me to 8 boxes of shoes. Craig encouraged to run outside with each pair. And I'm glad I did -- they each felt a bit different, some decent, some bad, and one stood out as the best. It made me see how easy it would be to get a substandard shoe with a substandard salesman. Fortunately, Craig is nothing of the sort. To top it off, Craig chatted quite a bit about some fascinating inventions that he has cooked up to test shoes, and about a lot of ideas he had about other health-related systems. I took a special interest, since I'm a patent lawyer, and he's the owner of a number of patents. His interest in fitness shows not just in his speech but also in how he looks -- super energetic, lean, tanned, just like the stereotype of the consummate runner. He's a guy who can certainly relate to the needs of his customers. A great guy to meet and a great business. Highly recommended! read more

Gah. I have a love-hate relatiohnship with this place. First of all, it is always crowded. And, the people with their shoes off always have smelly feet! GAG. Yes, the sales staff is mighty knowledgeable--much more so than some adolescent register drone at a chain sporting goods store--I'll give them that. However, when I go in to get some advice about that pesky IT band pain that just won't seem to go away, or I'm looking for a good replacement for my trail shoes... or say I just want to look around for a brand new pair of running socks because I'm a dork like that and things of such nature excite me, please don't treat me like an idiot. Please don't scoff at my preference for Adidas over Brooks... I like them, okay? They make my toes feel good when I've been running for an hour and I'm worried about the pains everywhere else. EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT, OKAY?? It doesn't make me want to shop in your store. It makes me want to re-enact that scene from 'Pretty Woman' where Vivian (so apropos, don't you think? Except... I'm not a hooker... not a cheap one anyway) swoops in with bags full of expensive things and glares down her nose and says, "You DO work on commission, don't you? I have to go buy lots of things now... Goodbye! (or some reasonable facsimile of said statement)" So, anyway... 4 stars because you really can get some good advice (but usually only after waiting around for everyone else before you to ask their long questions and get their long answers... and of course, you have a long question that also deserves a long answer); they have a nice selection of orthotics, they make custom orthotics (if you can spend the $crilla) and they also stock fun and incredibly useful things like Bodyglide (my favorite product on earth). I must have been lucky because they were not crowded when I went on Saturday in the middle of the day. One of the salespeople helped me right away, and she watched me walk and went and picked out an assortment of shoes. I tried 6 and each time ran up and down the street to find the best fit. We narrowed it down to to and she got one size bigger and different widths of the two to find the perfect ones for me. I ended up buying a great pair of shoes for a bit over $100, which is what you pay for good running shoes. I would recommend this store to people and think that they go above what is asked to help the customer. read more

I bought a pair from here around a year ago. They found that my feet roll a bit when running and recommended a selection of appropriate shoes. Bought the ones that felt best and have been a happy runner ever since. Planning to go back soon and pick up another pair of the same, as the current have started to lose their cushion (as would be expected). For what it's worth, I had looked up the price online after buying that first pair, and it was identical to what I'd paid(!), albeit ignoring tax. A few months after my visit, my family were visiting and my mother wanted to find a good pair of walking shoes. We came by here and they found a great shoe for her, but they didnt have her exact size in stock. So rather than trying to sell her the wrong shoe or setting up a cumbersome delivery arrangement, they just wrote down the model/size for her so that she could buy it elsewhere once she got back home. If you're looking for running shoes then this store is DEFINITELY the store for you. There have been too many times when I rolled up to a Foot Locker or Finishline and been met with answers that I'm sure were just pulled out of their ass regarding good running shoes for overpronators. That or they would just direct me to the typical 'cool-looking' Nikes and say that these would be good for my needs. That should suffice, right? Thanks, but I need some running shoes that will REALLY do the job. Because I know, from experience, that running in the wrong shoes can lead to some really bad pains. If you're going to get some running shoes, might as well make sure that it's a worthwhile investment that will keep you wanting to come back to running, right? La Foot, however, has associates that definitely know what they're talking about. Very friendly and definitely makes an effort to check out how you walk and makes sure that their recommendations are correct. This definitely helps me gain the confidence in my purchase because I know why I'm getting them as well can feel how nice they are on my feet. They even let you wear the shoes out of their store and run around in them for a bit to see if they're right for you. The prices are right around what I would expect from some (good) running shoes. There's a nice selection of running shoes like Asics, but don't expect to find a bunch of sexy looking running shoes that does both function and sexiness. I have come to the realization that most great, functioning running shoes are kind of ugly (but I'm sure it depends on who you ask). The parking kind of sucks cause' it's all street parking, but it's Berkeley so I kinda saw that coming. I'd definitely come back to this place exclusively for my running shoe needs. read more

Let's be clear: I am not a runner. I race bicycles and am fine spending 4,000 calories in a 60 mile leg busting race. Ask me to run a mile though and I hide in a closet. When the coach started putting runs on my calendar to get ready for 'cross season I groaned. Given that background, I knew I had no idea what kind of shoe to buy for my first pair. I yelped around and came across the many positive reviews of LaFoot Plus and decided to give it a go. The rest of the reviews are right. This place doesn't just sell you a shoe, they take a bit of time to watch you walk, stare at your funky feet, and explain arches, pronation, and other important factors to consider. They recommend a few different shoes and let you jog around the block in them to see which is best (I politely declined this part). They didn't have my size in the shoe that gave me what I needed and so special ordered mine. They didn't even require a deposit and, to be honest, I didn't feel pressured to buy from them. That's always nice. The reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is just because I don't think I got one smile while I was in there. People were a little busy, but it was pretty straightforward, no frills interaction. I was trying to chat the guy up, but he was very business-like and didn't really reciprocate. However, this is in no way a reason you shouldn't go here: I would still absolutely recommend this place to a friend. read more

I had a bad experience shopping for cross-training shoes for my narrow feet at The Next Step in Albany. The service was lacking, and I wish I had not gotten the $140 shoes that I (unfortunately!) bought there. But then I got an excellent recommendation to check out Lafoot, and I went in today and had a great experience there! They had plenty of staff available to help the customers, and the guy who was helping me (Trevor, I think?) was super-knowledgeable and very patient. Ever since I broke my ankle sliding in to home plate in college and being in a cast for six weeks I have had shoe fit problems. Ever since going to LaFoot I have happy feet. I came here based on the yelp reviews and was extremely pleased with the experience. I had been experiencing some foot pain from running, which I attributed to be likely because my running shoes were over three years old. At La Foot the employees took the time to watch me walk in shoes, deduced what was wrong with my stride, and brought out all their best pairs for that type of ailment. They allowed me to try on each pair multiple times and go walking / jogging down the street with each pair. While the pair I settled on wasn't cheap, it wasn't more expensive than a typical quality pair of running shoes. The staff is very knowledgeable. Craig and Matt really know their stuff. Once I like a pair of running shoes, the running shoe company stops making them. So thank goodness for La Foot. They let me try the shoes on a treadmill and return them if they don't work(bother my knee, shin, hip, etc.) The machine they use to test the the shoe is much more accurate than what they say in the magazines. La Foot rocks! I reluctantly went to La Foot, after being nagged by the Shoe Repair Guy in Kensington. I like to get the bargain sneakers at Ross. I thought the prices there would be $$$$ but they have some reasonable prices when compared to the same shoes online. The staff there were very helpful, they know their inventory an they have a 2 week return policy. This is a good thing as my first pair did not work out, too short for downhill and achy under the arch. This is the most incredible place for anyone dealing with plantar fasciitis. Extremely knowledgeable, kind and careful. I can't remember the last time a sales person at a shoe store measured my foot, brought out the correct sizes, and put the shoes on me! The sales person first watched me walk, then recommended several shoes he felt were appropriate based on my gait. He had me walk around in each pair, and even said I could go outside and jog around in them if I wanted. We narrowed it down to two pairs, and he then had me put one from each pair on, and walk around for a direct comparison. I went to Lafoot Plus on the recommendation of other Yelpers. I moved here recently from the East Coast, where I had a running store that did shoe fittings. Well, Lafoot Plus blows away my former store! Not only did they fit me, they measured my current pair for wear to determine if I really needed a new pair. I have been having knee pain, and they described why that was--because my old shoes were worn and my knee tendons were taking more stress than they needed. They were able to explain to me very clearly what my needs were. They watched me walk in bare feet and let me jog down the block in a number of pairs of shoes. But the best part is, I left with a new pair of shoes that cost $40 less than the kind I used to get!! Bottom line: AMAZING customer service, very helpful, and they weren't bent on selling me the most expensive shoe. read more

Craig is great. Unlike some orthotic shoe places in town, this shop does not rush you or push you into products you may not need. Prices are about average, but service is excellent. They only carry a few brands, and they only specialize in running/walking shoes, but this is what you really need from a place like this. read more

No idea what or how these shoes would have fit. Went into the store and walked around. Stood in front of the cashier. Waited 15 minutes. Not one person acknowledged me. Not one person asked if I wanted help. The lady at the cashier just looked down at some paperwork. A younger salesman was with another customer when I walked in but after that customer left, he walked up to the cashier and made a phone call. There was someone older working with another customer helping her. Maybe it was because I was with my mother who walked in with a cane and they didn't think we would end up buying anything.
