first yelp review. 10 hour drive from memphis left us done. we needed a sure thing out of dinner. its funny how these resort location restaurants reviews on here are so tossed around by the moods of their vacationing patrons that a clear read of the place is a crap-shoot. so lighten up and us some perspective when weighing in on these places. time of year and feisty travelers can certainly change an experience. this is offseason, the staff were having fun, the atmosphere was great. im a ten year texan eating real mexican food. this place cares about what it serves. the roasted tomato salsa is some of the best, savory salsa ive ever eaten or made. the mahi mahi fish tacos were ever so lightly breaded and fried but also had a phenomenal blackened aura to them that made their flavor resonate. refried beans were chunky, rice was standard. my wife and i knew we had just been served up. came out with a huge grin. what a gem this place is. the ratings here are soft. read more

Great find on a hot day along 30-A between Rosemary and Alys beach. A great place to cool off in a lovely, air conditioned space. We ordered a custom made margarita and tasty grilled fish tacos. Our server, Hector, was super friendly and professional. We enjoyed their salsa and queso, both made in-house, with crispy chips. The tacos were delicious, featuring generous chunks of moist, grilled mackerel. The beans on the side had a lovely smokey flavor. We will return. And we will ask for Hector when we do. read more

We got in right before the rush and didn't have to wait at all! We had chips and salsa but also ordered the queso, which was the best i have ever had!!! We were a family of 5, all ordered different things and all were impressed. The food was great, the atmosphere was good, great for kids (its noisy) and our service was also great. We were not in the "Hector's" section everyone is talking about, but our waitress was great! We will return next time we are in Santa Rosa! read more

The chips are fried with the chicken fingers (we were told this fact when we asked if they were gluten free for a Celiac in our party) and they kinda taste like it, which was disappointing... because there's nothing like killer chips & salsa! This is your typical Mexican restaurant - the food is good and during the summer it is packed. What stood out was the excellent service from our waiter, Hector. He was very personable and attentive. We had a friend show up after we ordered our food. He noticed and immediately came to our table to take her order and was able to rush it in so her food came out at the same time as ours. He joked that he had to steal somebody else's order but I am sure he just worked with the kitchen to make it happen. The place and our waiter was very busy but we never felt rushed and our waiter was always calm and attentive. I hope he is there when we go back next year- he made our night! Service was great. Food was just ok, prices were absolutely horrendous. And don't sit outside, the flies are horrible, we were bombarded by them! My wife enjoyed her fundido, cheese dip is $8, a small soup is $7. The beer prices were right though for being a restaurant at the beach. read more

I rarely give out 5 stars anymore. My primary reason for this is generally because of service. Truly excellent service, especially in a seasonal area, is VERY rare mostly because of a lack of quality staff and/or enough time to train them. Our meal tonight at La Cocina was simply exceptional. Our server, Michelle, offered several recommendations (for me it was the lobster quesadillas, awesome), was extremely attentive to all of our needs, and was the perfect amount of friendly while maintaining her professionalism. The chips and salsa on the table at the beginning of the meal were great, our drinks were great, and our meals were even better. Thanks so much for a great final meal before heading home, my highest recommendations; we'll definitely be back again. read more

Food was okay, but after letting the waitress know we just had the second insect scurry across the table, we only received a very weak apology. We were not asking for a discount or anything, just shocked our concern was not respected. We still ate our meal and didn't bring home leftover food. I kid not, but as we were leaving, one of our sons noticed a bug in his soda! By far our worst dining experience over the past 30 years. Perhaps they should be more concerned with cleanliness and quality, and less on promoting they are affiliated with two other well know restaurants in the area. read more

My family has been going down to 30A for years now and there are a lot of excellent restaurants, but this is definitely not one. The service was so slow-- we had to grab the attention of a server to finally get our waiter over. Then, when our food finally came out, it was cold, plated horribly and not fresh at all. So sad! La Cocina used to be our favorite go-to casual spot, and as owners down here, we ate here above 6-8 times per year. We've always had to wait during the season, but EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED. It's no longer first come first serve in the bar area, the menu has completely changed, they have jacked the prices up several dollars per entree, and the quality of the food is still the marginal food you would expect in a hole in the wall Mexican place... sort of hot and sort of flavorful. For a party of three (one kid), we spent over $100 on Mexican food... not again and certainly not after an hour wait... I am really bummed - we have so many happy family memories at La Cocina - guess we will be making new memories elsewhere! Hope they get realistic again! read more

This place just recently updated it menu and it was awesome. We had great service and the food came out pretty quick. The food was similar to what you will find at most Mexican restaurants but they have some of the best queso and salsas I have had at a Mexican joint. Just not as good as it used to be. We have eaten here during our vacations for many years but the food just isn't as good. Maybe the chef left or who knows what. Carnitas taco way too salty. Grilled chicken is just not Mexican grilled chicken. We took our 2 young grandchildren, son and daughter in law to enjoy lunch at La Cocina. Upon arriving we were told that they were not serving lunch until 11:30. We then noticed the sign upon walking back outside that indicated lunch service started at 11:30. So we killed 20 minutes of time with hungry children by walking around shopping. At 11:25 we were told it would be "3more minutes"..... at 11:30 we were told it would be 30 more minutes until lunch service would begin. At this point we were all past hungry and left.we were so disappointed on this holiday weekend not to eat at La Cocina. What has happened here???? read more

This review is based on our group's visit on 7/23/09. Nice atmosphere, seating could be improved (our group of 5 was crammed at table for 4), salsa could be improved, but other food was delicious. The main reason for the low review was the horrendous service we received: waitress gruff from the start, slow for refills, admittedly made error on part of order, but argued with our ENTIRE group about another error. The worst part of our experience was the fact that the manager appeared to notice that we had a problem, but she didn't seem to care/avoided us. read more

Food poisoning. We went to La Cocina over Memorial Day weekend, 3 of us ordered carnitas tacos and got sick. The rest of our party were fine. No, it wasn't what we ate before of after. Great location, slow service, great margaritas, food not to our liking, not only for the food poisoning, it's just bad tex mex. If you go, stick to the bar and bring a bag of Doritos. Ps. Must say our server was super friendly. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATE George, who owns the place has been in touch with me. He has kindly asked me to amend my review (I removed all caps on the first line) and offered to refund our money. I really don't care much about a refund but that shows he cares and has tried to make things better. This is no fast food Mexican joint! I have never had a Hamburger in a Mexican Restaurant but oh wow!! The Queso Burger with guacamole and bacon was like nothing I have ever tasted. Fresh, spicy and just plain delicious. The Salsa was also remarkable, just the right amount of Cilantro and garlic. Next to El Tapatio in Tallahassee these are the two best Salsas I have ever had. Hector, my waiter was excellent. However, the music was just too weird... some kind of Techno-Latin ruckus! Take your time and enjoy this place and then it's siesta time!!! read more
