During my first appointment, I could immediately tell that everyone who works there is a true professional and cares a great deal about their work. After having my second baby, my hair went through a bit of a crazy phase. I was pretty nervous to have a new stylist cut and color it. But now, I feel like my hair has never looked better! Risa is the very first person who ever really took some time to look at me and ask for my input And think! she ultimately described a Vision! if I would just resist cutting my own hair, this could happen. I've been to Calysta three times for color and/or haircuts in the last few months, and she and Laboratorie are great. The salon is small but comfortable (not too loud, not too quiet), a charming little salon sort of hidden right in Roland Park (I'm in this area all the time and didn't realize it was there!). The staff are all really friendly and helpful. They'll call or text you if there's an cancellation earlier than your appointment if you want (I usually need a 5pm or later or Saturday appointment which are hard to come by, so I'm usually open to an earlier appointment). They're also really skilled at what they do. I'm in a bit of a color correction pattern (trying to get back to my natural color, which is tough after 20+ years of coloring my hair), and Calysta and the other staff at the salon when I'm there are so thoughtful about what they can do to get closer and closer to my natural color each time I visit. The salon is a little higher end, so this isn't the place for a budget color or cut. But if you're looking for a salon you can trust for a good cut and color every time, check Laboratorie out! read more

This was my first experience getting my haircut at Laboratorie, and it was exceptional. Taylor gave me a very relaxing shampoo. Gabby the stylist did a phenomenal job. She was attentive, and cut and styled my hair exactly as I requested. She was kind, and had a very peaceful energy. I'm not what possessed the woman below me to leave such a terrible review, but she could not be more wrong about this place. Trust me, I've been coming here since 2017 I want to say? Kristyn, my stylist, is a magician with bangs and has a way of knowing what I want when I don't even know what that is. I also see Gabby who isn't a full time stylist yet for my color, and usually she's assisted by Rebecca who is another senior stylist, and it always turns out spectacular. In addition to being the best at what they do, everyone is always so nice! The owner Bethany is SO down to earth and always accommodating. You can text to set up an appointment, and more than once she's been the one to set up my appointments for me. If I ever had to cancel my appointment last minute or change my hair because it wasn't what I wanted or anything, she takes care of it no questions asked. Yes, it is pretty expensive, but in my opinion it's always worth it because I know I'll walk out looking great each time and the stylists are paid fairly (which is v important to me). Basically, if you're looking to become the gorgeous main character of your own life, you should book with them immediately! And leave them a good review afterward read more

This has been an experience. After an extraordinary haircut in New Haven Conn. on December 05 2021, I upon the recommendation of a neighbor sought to make an appointment at the above named hair salon. The person who should have cut my hair was not available until late April. They recommended another hair cutter. I told her I wanted it very short. Short it was, but it was one of the worst haircuts I have ever had, so bad that friends asked me what happened to my hair. An attempt to have Laboratorie correct this awful haircut, I was informed that it would have to grow out. (The haircut was on February 5th of this year.) My hair got more and more untidy and looked as if I had taken scissor to it myself. I sent another email to this salon. The response I got was truly unbelievable. They accused me of 'shouting' and having 'taken my fur hat'. Neither was true. I did not 'shout' nor did I accuse anyone of taking my 'fur hat'. I simply did not remember where it was put. The arrogance of this salon was unbelievable. They were unwilling to recut my hair and fix the errors of the person who cut it. They refused to do anything and 'struck me off of their books'. Oh yes, they returned my money for this dismal haircut. They were simply unwilling to admit that one of haircutters messed up. Anyone can, but most people would be willing to fix a mistake. Be forewarned. This salon is in love with itself and has a superiority complex. One person I know refused to have her hair cut there because they have a policy of taking a credit card in advance. She found this 'arrogant'. I am really angry at this situation and hope that this long detailed review will guide others seeking a haircut. I am quite sure that when the salon reads this review they will come up with more stories about my behavior. Do not believe them. They are unable to admit they messed up. read more

This place is very worth the cost. I have never dyed my hair before and didn't know what to expect. I came in with a picture of what I wanted, and Liz helped me figure out exactly what would look best and what was possible for my type of hair. She spent 4 hours (1 hour after it had closed!) to make sure my hair looked the best possible. She explained every step to me and how to best maintain my new do. It cost almost double what I expected...but at the end of the day, if that's what it takes to get my hair to look just how I want it, it was totally worth it. It's so cute, clean, and everyone is friendly. They are all very good at what they do. I love getting my haircut and colored here. I moved to Baltimore from Los Angeles a year ago and went through a couple of places before I found Kristin at Laboratorie. I am typically super nervous about finding someone to cut my hair. With the thick, coarse wavy mess I have, it takes a skilled person to know how to tame my hair. I immediately knew Kristin was talented when she assessed my head and told me she would need to have at least an hour to work on me. Also, she explained how I would need to grow my layers out so that they weighed down my hair (the way it was previously cut left me a poofy mess). I have been to Kristin various times over the past 6 months for both cut and color, and she is fantastic all around. I highly recommend this salon, and especially Kristin. read more

I used to be very hands-off about my hair--trimmed the ends myself, rarely got professional haircuts, didn't see the point in spending so much money. Then I decided I'd start really taking care of my difficult hair. For a few years, I bounced around to different salons and was always pleased with the outcome, but once I found Bethany, I knew I'd stay with her. Now there's no looking back! What is different is Bethany's incredible, professional commitment to doing just the right thing for you. She has exacting standards and will take the time to get things just right, never rushing through a cut. She has given me great haircuts at short, medium, and longer lengths and always has ideas for just the right touches. Before, I'd always been happy with my hair upon leaving the salon, but then found it challenging to replicate the good results at home. With the haircuts that Bethany has given me, I have found it so easy to make my hair look consistently good. I don't think about having bad hair days anymore. Knowing the challenges I have wrangling with the texture of my difficult hair, after working with me for a year or so, Bethany suggested that I might want to consider a special, all-natural amino acid treatment. It was expensive, but knowing that she wouldn't steer me wrong just to make a buck, I decided to go for it. It was like getting a hair transplant--amazing! Better than I could have imagined! Now I'm hooked. In the past year, I've started getting color as well, and was worried about matching the color of my hair from a few years back, when it was a bit brighter red. Once again, Bethany came through and I've been thrilled with the results. Though I see Bethany for my appointments, I wouldn't hesitate to visit one of the other Laboratorie stylists. I've been to Laboratorie two times. I wanted to see a senior stylist, but it was impossible to get an appointment with one. I think they were booking about 3 months out. So don't call expecting an appointment in a few weeks. I called about a month out, and saw a junior stylist named Alexandra. I walked out liking the cut and color but not loving it. I decided I'd give it another chance, called back to find out she no longer worked there, and was scheduled with Natalie. I explained to her that I was trying to grow my hair out and tended to not like really short layers, but at the same time felt like my hair needed more shape. I walked out with short layers but really loved the color. I find it's harder to find someone who does great color vs. cutting, so I think I'll give this salon one more chance. I will say, they are extremely nice, and the salon atmosphere is great. Tips are cash only. Parking is easy with the garage across the street and plenty off-street. They are also great about complimentary in-between bang trims. read more

This salon is located in a really charming part of Baltimore, and it's just as charming on the inside. The wooden truss, white brick walls, and stainless steel accents all make for a really modern, but cozy feeling place. Just all-around clean style. Bonus, the receptionist offered me coffee. I had an appointment with Liz who was super sweet and wicked knowledgeable. I believe she's a colorist, but I only got a haircut with her. I gave her free reign as long as it was low-maintenance, and I was sure to point out an error I made trying to give myself bangs. Liz calmed my nerves about lobbing off some length, fixed the mishap, answered all my coif questions, styled me up, let me know I shouldn't try to cut my own face-framing layers again, and was very thorough til the end about making sure I looked my best. I have had appointments with all three stylists here, Bethany, Natalie and Rebecca and I have been so satisfied every time! These women consider hair styling a craft, not a job - and you can tell. Natalie was the first stylist I met, and she did my hair and a friend's hair for a wedding. It was elegant, and stayed fuss free, but felt really natural and just what I had in mind. Not at all overworked. I visited Rebecca and Bethany for haircuts, and I've been really happy walking out of the salon. It feels like a finished look, but not over-sprayed and sticky. I love the subtle creativity that my bangs have- just slightly angled. I'm really excited to have my highlights and color done here in the future. After a horrendous exit from Salon Marielle in Silver Spring, I searched and searched to find that perfect kinda "Home" feeling. I am extremely particular about my hair and I change the color/cut almost every 6 months. Despite the fact that i am 'Fifty Something' , I refuse to have gray hair and love to have a rock star's look. My colors have been red, deep purple, deep purple with blond streak in the front, bright purple, blonde, lavender, lavender and silver "stripes" and most recently, I am a very pale brownish base with pink overtones. It looks really terrific! Bethany found a color additive conditioner that helps to keep it looking alive...as we all know pink won t stay. And a note about the people........... The expertise, charm and awesome stylists who give amazing consults and follow thru with a plan and final product to 'dye' for (could not help myself...sorry about the little pun!) My favorite little shampoo goddess who offers a scalp massage that is sublime! Last but certainly, NOT least is an amazingly kind, considerate and VERY beautiful person who charmingly answers every phone call with a willingness to help, an air of professionalism and an expertise that seems so difficult to have in this decade. At this season of giving thanks and reflection, I feel very blessed to have found this lovely diamond in what seems to be a rough land of hair salon coal! I highly recommend this lovely place to everyone who finds themselves paying month after month for sub par hair care, provided by nasty, unfeeling and marginally talented individuals. The ONLY flaw in the whole place is how hard it is to get an appointment. I usually go to Balance Salon on Cold Spring, but my usual girl couldn't take me for a few weeks, went out on a limb and got an appointment on the spot because of a cancellation. I had Bethany (the owner) and she was great! I've been growing out my disconnect and she started the process of blending my hair to start a true even pixie. No judgement when I told her I box dye my hair (I'm always embarrassed to day at nice places!) And after I explained to her I don't have that kind of money, she kindly suggested to try one of her other stylists next time since they have a lower price point (I was not offended at all) I have an appointment in a few weeks. Its crazy that this place isnt flooding with rave reviews! Its like the promised land of hair care! Customer for life in the making. So my hair was really damaged and in desperate need of some professional attention (coarse, African American). I was booked with Natalie and decided to go with some color and the big chop; my dead length needed to go. Btw this place as the most hospitable receptionist desk ever. I had read Natalie's bio o the salon website(most experienced with African American hair) and before I got there I already felt like I was for sure in great hands. She was very attentive and took wonderful care of my hair. I was a bit nervous bc I've never gone this short before but the end result was amazing. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. AMAZED. My hair looked like it never saw a bad day in its existence. I most definitely recommend this salon to everyone looking for a fantastic place for hair care. Hands-down the best place in town. Bethany is wonderful, and so are Natalie and Rebecca. I love that if you really have no idea what to do with your hair (as is often the case- I want something different, but I'm not sure what) they will help you find a solution and it will be perfect. For instance I had no idea what to do about my grey and was thinking about maybe growing it out someday (emphasis on the "maybe" and "someday") and Bethany helped me transition from permanent to semi-permanent color so if I ever want to go for it I won't have to go through an awkward "skunk stripe" phase. Granted, I'm not the most difficult hair customer, but it's hard to find someone who will listen to what you want, be patient, style it in a way that works for you and won't butcher your hair all at the same time. Fortunately, Kristyn is fantastic! I have incredibly long, thick hair that apparently can be hard to manage by some stylists, but Kristyn was comfortable with it the first day I came in. I told her my goals in terms of length, style, etc. and she really works with me to find a length/cut that I'm comfortable with. I had my first experience at laboratorie and will not be going back. I had a bad experience with Rebecca. My appointment started with a reprimand from my stylist, who I was meeting for the first time, for being late when I was actually 30 minutes early. The consultation was good, we agreed on a length and style. In the end, the style was fine but the length was much shorter than what we agreed to. At the end of the visit I was once again reminded of their late policy as well as their other appointment related policies. I had such a great experience with Liz! It's no wonder she was Baltimore Magazine's top colorist; she knows her stuff! I had an overall idea of what I wanted but wasn't able to give her a ton of specifics, especially since I didn't understand going in just what it would take to get there. She managed to take what I did give her and totally nail it! When it was all said and done, I was there for nearly 5 hours and she spent much of that time with her hands on my head. While the color was my top priority, she gave me a really awesome cut, too; my long hair has become a bit of a safety blanket so I was hesitant to take off more than just a trim but I'm glad I did, it looks so much prettier and healthier now. As if it wasn't enough to walk away with beautiful hair, she also waved it and took some really great pictures! The salon itself is beautiful and everyone seemed friendly. This was definitely the most I've ever spent on any hair services, but you absolutely get what you pay for. I'm a little nervous about caring for/maintaining the tone on my own, but Liz explained ways in which I can do so and she's approachable so I would feel comfortable reaching between now and my next appointment for advice if I need it. I had seen pictures of her work before I even booked my appointment so I knew I'd be in good hands, but the whole thing has exceeded my expectations. I did a ton of research about Baltimore salons, and I'm thrilled that I went to see Bethany. She listened to my concerns about my hair and I left the salon with exactly what I wanted! What I liked most about Bethany is that it was clear she was doing what was best for me and my hair, as opposed to the same technique done for everyone.
