We had reservations for a Friday night birthday dinner. I stopped by the restaurant to bring in a cake and they gladly accepted it and said they'd bring it out during our dessert time. Appetizers were pretty good, the risotto was rich and creamy and the French onion soup was great. My friend got the the roasted duck breast that was asked as medium and came out rare. And the beef shoulder was a little overwhelming with the red wine sauce. After, we were serviced dessert menus even though I told them we had a cake. They served us the cake and were not given any utensils. We were then told that there was a $20 cake fee for the restaurant. I asked why I wasn't told this when I dropped off or even before serving the cake and the hostess ignored me and didn't say anything. After spending +$300 for an average meal and told there was a cake fee AFTER the cake was served-- I am very disappointed. We wanted to try and go to somewhere local and support local businesses, but save your money and go elsewhere. There are plenty of other wonderful restaurants in the area! read more

We love making a trip to this wonderful Brookline restaurant! La Voile is a very good and safe option for a small group outing or date night. There is a food option for everyone, and the food is reliably very good. We have never had trouble getting a last-minute reservation, even on weekends. The restaurant is quiet - perfect for having relaxed conversations while dining. They have set up a very cute outdoor dining patio, and we were lucky enough to get an adorable table outside on a beautiful evening! The staff was absolutely amazing, kind, and attentive. We loved the charcuterie board, which featured two cheeses with a hint of truffle (yum) and three delicious meats. The oysters were surprisingly very good, even for Boston standards! The main dishes never disappoint. They are not necessarily "mind-blowing" dishes with unique flavors or ultra creative concoctions, but they are always tasty, French-inspired, and perfectly portioned. Our favorites are the lamb shoulder (with a yummy side of potatoes) and the salmon (always nicely cooked). The main dishes range from $25-37, which is very reasonable for the quality of food and service at this sit-down Brookline staple. We also loved the apple tart and ice cream dessert option - I'm not 100% sure if the apple tart is homemade, but it is good nonetheless. The drink menu is extensive and very good! I would think as a foodie, I would know what French food is. Alas, all I have in my mind is a caricature: enormous plates, tiny portions, huge prices. (Disclaimer: I know this is likely a gross misrepresentation, my intent is more comedic than anything.) This doesn't apply here; the portions are satisfying but not gluttonous. I heard about this restaurant and decided to try it, especially with the more-or-less reasonable "Taste of France" prix-fixe menu price. I opted for Le Terrine, Le Confit, the Pastry (and an espresso ordered out-of-pocket). Overall, the food was delicious, approachable, and not pretentious. The restaurant provided olive bread and butter while I waited. The bread was good, but nothing to write home about. Though, the butter was a slice off a stick, and therefore a little hard to spread. Le Terrine was [almost] what an appetizer should be: tasty but designed to whet your appetite for more! The mousse (like a pâté), a lightly dressed salad, and caramelized onions were yummy. The crackers were a little simple, but that seems to be by design. My issue with this dish is that while the ingredients can be assembled into a sandwich of sorts, it's a little rough in this form. Otherwise, the elements of the dish don't really get along with one another. Le Confit was all-around excellent! The duck was flavorful, cooked to perfect slide-off-the-bone tenderness, and the sauce took it to another level. I also appreciate that the sauce is drizzled on the side. This way, the meat doesn't become soggy, and you can choose if/how much to add. The salad was a reprise of that which came with the terrine but without gherkins. The piece of me that likes variety was insignificantly disappointed, and the bit that doesn't like gherkins wasn't complaining. Where it comes to the pasty: this was also delicious. The dough was flaky and light, and the sweetness level was on-point! One thing of note is that trying to eat this with a spoon made the delicate layers separate. Go for a fork and knife to truly enjoy this. The location is small but clean, and the service was very attentive and fast. In terms of value, considering I got three courses, the duck not being a cheap protein, and the location, I'd say you certainly get what you pay for. read more

Remembrance of things past. And at La Voille? In a more modest and narrow bowl wherein the bread sails but one ship alone. Here are my reviews on the food: La Risotto ($13) Perfectly cooked risotto with a rich and velvety texture from the parmesan cream. I usually don't rave about vegetables, but the artichokes that it came with were delicious! They were nicely roasted and gave the risotto some crunchy texture. La Brandade ($14) This is a must get if you like mashed potatoes and cod. This is essentially a mix of both, topped with a crispy golden brown cheese crust. The filling was smooth, creamy, and perfectly seasoned. All together, it's a delicious combination. Highly recommend trying this unique dish. Le Canard ($24) Well cooked duck breast over sweet potato puree with orange caramel sauce on top. Unfortunately, I think the dish needed another (perhaps salty) element to balance out the sweetness of the dish. The sweet potato and sauce were both on the sweet side so I think it overpowered the duck breast. Le Confit ($24) Perfectly balanced dish with protein, starch, and greens. Disappointing. The menu was stereotypical French--nothing new or different, just the old standards. Ordered the bourguignon; while the sauce was tasty, the meat was so fatty as to be inedible. The description mentioned cooked baby carrots, but I was served large raw carrot spears instead. We went to La Voile for my wife's birthday. The experience was mixed at best. The three star rating may be a bit generous. The Good: 1) The onion soup and Dover sole were both excellent. The beef bourguignon was tasty but a rather miserly portion. 2) Our seating was not delayed. The Bad: 1) we requested the duck medium rare with the sauce to the side. It came with sauce below and on top. The duck arrived medium with imagination. My wife told the manager about it( she had deliver the plate) My wife told that it "would be at least 25 minutes to make another one, and did she want to send it back. The waiter came by, said it would be five minutes, and brought the same breast of duck back(my wife had cut into the duck, and the cut was in the exact same place) Also, there was still a wee bit of sauce. Now the duck breast was medium well to well done. She kept it. 2) The first gras duo was average. The slice of fousvgras was overlooked and the pate had the taste food gets from being in the fridge too long. Not returned. 3) Bread was awful for a French restaurant, and served with possibly a 1/4 inch slice of butter. A request for more ignored. 4) The manager was unpleasant, the waiter with fake courtesy, and the food runners three times tried to take plates away before we were done. The Ugly: I called and specifically spoke to a woman, telling her it was my wife's birthday, and I noted it twice on the Open Table app. No mention whatsoever. Cost- 240.00 for three, before gratuity. Would I go again? No. Too many great places to eat at much lower costs. read more

We joined in for some outdoor dining during Dine Out Boston and we loved our Saturday night out. The outdoor dining is on the sidewalk where you have a view of Washington Square and the green line T. Discovered this gem on Groupon. My partner and I have never had French cuisine before, but we were pleasantly surprised on our weekend trip to Boston. We made a reservation for 8:30 (although they close at 9pm) and they still took us in and gave us exceptional service, and we never felt rushed. On a Friday night, the restaurant was not very full so it was overall a nice experience with great ambiance. The 3 course dinner was well worth the price, and I particularly loved the Wine Flight option. All the food was presented well and tasted great (we weren't huge fans of the Foie Gras Terrine, but perhaps our palettes aren't quite there yet!) my favorite was the mushroom cream truffle soup -- it's a must try. After many super take out meals we finally ate in person at La Voile. We ate outside Tuesday of last week and had a feast. Dinner started by sharing a charcuterie plate of paté, rillete, cold cuts and cheese. Also something tasting like candied onion. Excellent. Next, I had Malbec, such a smooth red wine. La Voile Brookline was an experience. We picked it randomly for our anniversary, wanting something a bit more fancy than usual, but still casual enough for a weeknight. For starters, we got the Le Veloute (creamy mushroom soup), Les Huitres (oyters), and Le Foie Gras Poele (seared foie gras). The soup was the highlight of the starters as well as the whole meal -- creamy, earthy, perfectly seasoned, with a nice dollop of creme fraiche on top. The foie gras was super rich and well-seared, well-accompanied by apple compote, some salad, and crispy bread. The oysters, 6 of them, were OK - not the best we've ever had, though the sauce was nice. The main dishes rocked! We ordered La Sole Meuniere (sole) and Le Filet de Boeuf (beef sirloin). The sole came with capers and butter and a thick half lemon, as well as a side of wild rice. The beef came with haricots verts (string beans) with a few roasted tomatoes on top as well as gratin dauphinois (potato au gratin). All excellent! The meat and fish quality were extraordinary. The sole even had roe in it! The potato au gratin was creamy, cheesy, nicely crisped on top -- totally worth ordering as an extra side regardless of which main dish you decide to go for. Not to forget desserts, we got three to try: La Creme Brulee (creme brulee), La Mousse au Chocolat (chocolate mousse), and Le Millefeuille (multi-layered pastry with custard). Of these, the creme brulee was the absolute winner. The chocolate mousse was a bit too sweet for us, albeit the texture was on point. The millefeuille was a bit of a disappointment especially if you're used to the light texture of the Lady M's version, which can be considered the paragon of this particular dessert category. Our waiter, Alexander, was sweet and relaxed. He felt like someone who enjoyed life and good food. We had a Groupon for a 3-course dinner. Food was definitely amazing. We had foe gries and soup for appetizers, duck breast and lamb for entree, finishing with chocolate mousse and creme brûlée. I asked for a mocktail & the waiter gave me exactly what I wanted, if not better. The food was also incredible - the seared foie gras was perfect, for a very reasonable price as well. However, what the restaurant calls Gratin Dauphinois is anything but that. Dauphinois (potato gratin) is a French specialty from the town of Grenoble and it is made from potatoes thinly sliced evenly, with garlic and cream. Some variants contains cheese. I definitely recommend the cod fillet because it was so light but flavorful with the pesto as an accent to the mashed potatoes. Big caveat here: this was a Doordash order, so it wouldn't be fair to use this experience to judge the quality of dining in. That's why I'm giving two stars instead of one! Things got off to a bad start. One of the dishes (the entrecote) came in a large, stiff aluminum catering-style tray. Came with a soupy squash puree that didn't go all that well with it. The Doordash menu description promised fingerling potatoes, which didn't come - but checking the restaurant's menu directly, they seem to have removed the potatoes from the dish. Too bad. - Entrecote - Even tougher than the duck, which is surprising given how undercooked it was. I ordered it medium, and it seems like they cooked one side for the appropriate time and then just quickly seared the other. The result was a steak with a continuous brown-to-red gradient from top to bottom. I'm not big on rare steaks, so again, not great! I have now been to La Voile about 4 times now and felt like now would be a great time to write my review. This is a two-fold interview. One for their food and another for using their event space upstairs (we had our wedding on the top floor). Of my four visits, only one of them was meh (on Valentine's day). More on that below. Overall definitely recommend coming here. Food: This was the first place that I enjoy ordering salad at LOL. My wife is shocked. The "la roquette" and "les tomates" are incredible; we had eaten these before and had featured them in our wedding menu. I now order the la roquette every time I go. The combination of sweet (watermelon and melon) with salty (pine nuts and prosciutto) are fantastic. The bass entrée is de-boned right in front of you at the table, and is solid, however the duck is delicious. The one exception to this was on Valentine's day where it seemed a bit rushed. The place was absolutely packed you couldn't move anywhere. Other notable food items are the fries (incredible), the foie gras (best from a French restaurant in Boston), the risotto (I recommend getting it as a side dish) and the table baguette is really good too, but that's to be expected. I heard good things about the ribeye, but I haven't had it myself. Drinks: Their beer selection features some great beers like LaChouffe and Saison Dupont, however all are a bit on the pricier side. I think 1664 is their only modestly priced beer. Also, please add your beer and cocktail list to your website!! The cocktails thus far are hit or miss and I've noticed a frequent shift in their bartenders on site. The lavoile is good, as well as a spicy drink (can no longer recall the name) that was on the menu, but most other drinks weren't that great. Service: The service here has been spectacular and this goes for both during a regular dining experience and for the event experience. Most if not all of the waitstaff speak French, and are very attentive. During the wedding, they didn't let anyone's glasses reach half empty. Jerome, the manager, was very accommodating with our wishes for the space as well. Ambience/Décor: The restaurant gives off a very classy vibe and can definitely feel very romantic. There is a space upstairs and downstairs. On valentine's day the restaurant was very crowded and you could practically touch elbows with the table next to you, however on all of my other occasions, spacing hasn't been an issue. The upstairs can be used for a private function space, which is what we did, and was able to accommodate 65 people. There was a bar upstairs as well. I came here last night for dinner and had the least romantic experience of my life. The food was fine-- generic and not good or special enough to come back for compared to other spots in the city--but the wait staff was absolutely ridiculous. We were trying to have a conversation but kept getting interrupted by the hostess, the waiter, the runner, and a random other waiter. Every five minutes or so, someone would come by, reach across the table, and refill the water with the bottle that was already on our table, which we could have done ourselves--this wasn't a going around with a pitcher for all of the tables situation. The service was friendly, but lacking in a number of areas. The waiter did not know the proper procedure for dealing with the wine cork. The cork was only presented after all 4 glasses of wine were poured, not before the initial taste as expected. We had to ask for things like a fork that should have been there without asking. Bread was not refilled until we asked. My coffee came in a cup that as only 2/3 full, and I was never offered a refill. I also had to ask for cream. The escargot was tender, but lacked enough garlic. Potatoes were very good, but were not delivered hot. My wife had duck confit and I had roasted duck breast. Both had reasonably good taste, but were dry. Portion size was small. With pre-purchased voucher deal in hand, we were here for the Taste on a discount, yet service was still of a high caliber. Lovely. I've known of the name La Voile from the o.g. restaurant in Newbury st. That one is also pretty great, went twice for restaurant week. First time there was better than the second, but still pretty good. But this location: I love it. I live super close by so I am BLESSED. First time came and tried the small-bite menu. I got some terrine and some amazing cheese and I died and went to cheesy heaven. Also got the shrimp which was also amazing. And they had a beet soup of sort and that was equally delicious. Service first time was "meh" since it seem like the waitress forgot about me :( Second time, went for $1 oyster, sat at the bar - incredible. So fresh. Fricken beautiful. Pretty attentive service. Got some more small-bites. All are good, very recommend. Third time with my friends: more oyster, so delicious everyone fell into an oyster coma, neber wanting to wake up. We all got a squash soup that was incredible. Today: more oysters. Literally too fresh, such amazing ocean flavors. Tartine w/ goat cheese: very rich very filling. Foie gras - creamy intense goodness. Shrimp - different from last time but very good. Potato soup: decadent deliciousness! Service was also awesome, very nice waiter who constantly refill my water :D Anyways, so far all the soup have been tremendous. Got a cream of mushroom that's super filling and tasty. So I do recommend asking about the soup! Croque monsieur is also really good and pretty big for the cost. Smoke salmon is delicious. The price and portion is pretty good for small bite and $1 every day 5-6pm is a great deal (come early, sometime they run out of oysters bc its amazing). I'm a New Yorker in Boston who expects bad service in the Boston restaurants. However, we held an engagement party for my daughter last night at La Voile Brookline, which was excellent. The service was efficient and fast and capable. We expected the food and the wines to be excellent, which it was, but the service was excellent. We cordoned off a section of the restaurant for our party, which gave us privacy, a chance to make toasts, and a chance for the service to make a feel special. The service was not good at all, the food was okay on its own but the presentation was pretty bad. Who eats just escargot? It needs to be served with some kind of bread, and the wooden dinner roll you're given isn't appropriate. The foie gras is also served with a single measly slice of white bread. I asked for extra bread and got another single slice that was burnt. The drinks are also terrible, please do yourself a favor and don't ever come here. read more

In 2021, I searched the Brookline area for an intimate wedding rehearsal venue for my son's wedding. I met with Jerome to discuss details, and as soon as I left our meeting, I knew I had hit the jackpot. Over the next few months, Jerome was wonderful and so accommodating to work with and made several suggestions to personalize our event. The upstairs room was a perfect and intimate place for our special night. The food was absolutely delicious and Jerome and his wait staff were incredibly attentive. As the parents responsible for a memorable night for our son's rehearsal dinner, we were so pleased. 5 star dinner! 5 star night! I live on the South Shore and I recently made a special trip to Brookline to have dinner again at LaVoile with family members. It is worth the trip! As expected, our dinner did not disappoint. All members of my party raved about the food. We ordered petit sirloin and roast duck and both were cooked to perfection. Delicious!
