There is some racist comments made during the visit on top of the hair situation. Those comments will be at the bottom. I have "money pieces" in my hair that are a white blonde & the rest of my head is my natural color (brown). Last time I touched up my hair I grazed some pieces which caused them to be a gold color. I asked Gregory if he could fix those pieces while he bleached my roots. He told me he didn't think we should & he wanted to leave them. That was the first red flag.. While he was bleaching my roots he asked who did my hair before, I told him me. He complimented me, asked why I'm even there which was my second red flag. After he applied the bleach, there was spots on my forehead that had some on it. I thought it was weird he didn't wipe it, but I figured he was the professional. After her rinsed me & cut my hair (kept saying he hates cutting wet hair) he asked if I wanted a blow dry. I said no, it costs extra, I don't mind it wet. I know he heard me because he said, "it's so hot out it's nice to have wet hair in the heat." After he brushed my hair out & cut it HE decided to blow dry it. Said he wanted to see the color.. once it was dry I noticed it was yellow. Like. Yellow, yellow. I asked if we should tone it & he said "it looks nice." He took me outside & showed me in the light. I said okay, but felt uneasy. I had to drive home to get my card & on the way back decided I needed it toned. I got back to the salon, paid, he had someone else in the chair.. I said I wanted it toned, he told me to come back in an hour or so. When I got back I showed him be burned my forehead & I had sores all over my scalp. I gave the go ahead for the toner anyways because I had a wedding to go to.. the pictures are the blisters BEFORE the toner. He kept mentioning someone named Patricia & how she never got burned by bleach, he couldn't believe I did. Bleach & toner is usually not charged separately. The toner comes with the bleach everywhere I've gone.. when he toned my hair HE decided to blow dry my hair again, I did not ask for it. The first time I paid he charged me for the blow dry, even though I said no. I didn't say anything because I hate confrontation. He tried to charge me for a SECOND blow dry & the toner. I didn't end up paying for it because I didn't bring my purse back the second time I came in. He lost his damn mind if be thought I was gonna pay him more than I already had.. Now for the comments he made.. While he was bleaching my hair, he had mentioned that he wasn't a cat person, but when he bought his house, there was a cat that came with the house. He then said when his cat had passed, he went to a shelter and sought out a black cat because people don't like black cats. I told him the story about my cat and how I got him and then he proceeded to tell me the story about his. When he got this cat her name was "Zsa Zsa," he said he had to rename her because she was black & that was the "whitest name ever". He said her name was Shaniqua (& a bunch of other "stereotypical poc names) I was shocked.. I'm white passing & I am gonna assume that's why he felt comfortable saying it to me. I didn't say anything, at all about the name or cat after he said it. I honestly sat there in shock. He continued to go on & say the cat was his negra princess.. amongst other comments I thought were uncalled for. I wanted to address it in that moment, but had bleach in my hair & was unsure of what to say or do. When someone is giving a service I don't think race, politics or anything controversial should be talked about. As the customer I feel like I'm stuck not saying what I believe because I need my service finished, but also felt like I was enabling this type of behavior & it was so wrong. He asked if I had ever been to hair focus & I said no. He mentioned it either being Asian ran, or that he worked with someone Asian there. I can't remember exactly because I was still shocked about the cat. He mentioned Asian people not knowing how to do hair/being unattractive. I said back, "attraction is up to people individually. I don't think any race is just unattractive & I think most people would agree." & he said he begged to differ. It took me months to decide to write this review. I felt complacent by not speaking up to the things he said so the shame honestly stopped me. But after talking to my family I decided others should know who they're giving their money to. read more

Gregory is great! I love that I can have him trim my bangs for a middle part and they lay beautiful for 2-3 weeks! (My hair is very thick!) And when they get to the length that they don't look so good. I can change where I part it and it looks great again! If you are not sure how to explain what you want, Bring him a picture! I love getting my hair cut by Greg. He does a dry cut by hand for me, and I always feel great after. Whenever I call to make a haircut appointment, I don't have to wait too long to get in - but of course my hair is very short, so it doesn't take long for him to cut - and sometimes he's available right then and there. He's very accommodating and pleasant to converse with. He's got his own funny sense of humor that makes me laugh or just smile. His men's cut is a fair price, too. Gregory does a quick, great haircut. He knew what I needed before I even said anything and gave me exactly what I did ask for. He does a dry cut unless you want a wash and blow dry after, and that works for me. I have allergies to fragrance and perfumes and the fact that I didn't have to deal with that was wonderful. I have short straight hair and getting that even all the way around in less than 10 minutes... whew! That's a difficult task for a lot of other hairdressers! read more

All of this from the absolutely fabulous Gregory of LaVida Salon! He's creative, amazing, accommodating (I heard him take a call from a lady in Province desperate to get her hair done before she leaves for California tomorrow... I've been back to LaVida an uncountable amount of times and each time is the same. Gregory is a miracle worker with my Chewbacca-like hair, turning me into straight up Glamour. He is great to be around, really gives one on one attention, and is probably the most hilarious person in Maricopa. I use to go to a hair color specialist in the state where I am from, moved to Mericopa and tried a few different places. I found a gal that did a great job, then I had an emergency to leave to go back home, she didn't have any time to fit me in while my mother was dying , I had no choice but to go to the place in WalMart. The gal that did my hair was the mgr. and didn't know a thing about color she said my hair was stubborn and the color wouldn't take. I said it always takes. So she recolored my hair and said it needed a gray coverage on it. What an idiot, even I knew that. I said that she better recondition my hair that she totally ruined the color was bad and I had to have my family see it. Well God must have sent me to Gregory for help. I happen to check out this little mall and I asked Gregory for help locating a business in the mall, as I watched him work and as he was done I basically interviewed him, being in interior design, I like things to look perfect. Long story short, I have had and still having the best hair I ever had in my life. Perfect color and cut . And after seeing his work, I tell him to give me the best color for my skin color and the best cut for my face shape. My husband has never complimented me so much on my hair as he has since I have had Gregory work on it. He is far the best in Maricopa or any other place around . I booked an appointment with Gregory about a week ago and chose him based on the good reviews I read about him. I arrived for my haircut and Gregory barely said anything to me, except to say have a seat and let's get started. I told him I wanted to keep the length but trim the ends to make my hair look healthier. Ten minutes later Gregory was sweeping up my hair and I was left staring at my reflection in the mirror and feeling a bit confused. Based on other salon experiences I was expecting a wash and/or style, but Gregory ran his comb through my hair, randomly cut out a lot of volume, and spent a lot of time talking to his other customer and then he was done with me. I left thinking I could like the cut, but a few days later I'm still finding myself thinking about this poor experience and hating my haircut more and more each day. The entire experience was disappointing and not on par with the reviews about him from other customers. Being new to Maricopa, I'll be looking for a different place to get my hair cut and styled...and unfortunately I'll have to find a new place sooner than later. read more

As a few other reviewers have stated, the service here is very temperamental. I've seen people come away with great hair cuts every time, and then there's the experience I had. First, knowing that they only take appointments (despite not originally saying so online) I booked an appointment with Gregory. Showing up a few minutes early (I get anxious about being late) I expected to have to wait until he was ready for me, since I figured he would have another appointment ahead of mine. Wrong! Not only did he not have any appointments before me, he wasn't even there!! I decided that maybe he was just running a few minutes late, and had my friend with me so we waited around for about 15 minutes after my appointment should have started before he rushed in. Not only did he not apologize for being late, the entire appointment then felt rushed as well. Sadly, this wasn't the worst part. He started off with a shampoo and tried to talk me into a deep conditioning treatment. Stating that I would most likely do that the next time around I politely declined the offer and asked to have the standard shampoo and hair cut. This did not sit well with Gregory. It was as if he took this as a personal offense and proceeded to wash and partially dry my hair with such vigor that my already wavy hair curled into some serious knots and was left sopping wet. For those of you who don't know, brushing knotted wavy or curly hair is a feat, and must be done carefully so as to not rip out the hair of the person you're brushing. Instead of starting from the bottom of my hair and working through the tangles he created, he started from the top of my head and ripped through my hair. Audibly gasping and stating that it hurt he huffed it off and continued (to both mine and my friend's horror). By the time he finished flying through my hair cut, not even bothering to check his work, I was so flustered and upset that I paid him and left. After getting home and taking pain meds for the headache caused by the entire ordeal, I then had to finish drying my hair (because he couldn't be bothered to dry it fully) and have my friend go through and fix all of the errors he left. There were large sections of my hair that weren't cut and the entire thing was a rushed and messed up job. Unfortunately, because of this one bad experience I will never be returning to this salon. For those who have had a good experience, consider yourselves lucky. Clearly his personal emotional swings are a huge factor on whether or not Gregory decides to give you a good hair day. read more
